Politics › Protest: Rivers Crisis Splits Civil Society by chaloner(op): 12:41am On Jul 30, 2013
BY EGUFE YAFUGBORHI

… as S’South PDP c’ttee condemns crisis
PORT HARCOURT—SOME rights groups in Rivers State have said that the crisis rocking Peoples’ Democratic Party, PDP, in the state was the result of selfish politics of all the parties involved.

They, therefore, dissociated themselves from today’s planned mass rally in Port Harcourt by civil society organisations calling for the removal of the state Commissioner of Police, Mr. Joseph Mbu, over the crisis.

In a statement, yesterday, the organisations noted that the protest was needless because it would not benefit the ordinary Rivers people, but rather tends to glorify the factions of the party, none of which they perceive as being involved in the crisis for public good.

The civil organisations include Rivers chapters of Civil Liberties Organistion, CLO; Social Action, Oil Watch Africa; Centre for Environment and Human Rights and Development, CEHRD, Students Environmental Assembly and Social Workers Movement, among others.

The statement said: “The political actors fighting among themselves, no matter the camp they belong, have never had the interest of the toiling masses at heart.

“They oppress the masses whenever they deem it profitable for their class interests and fight themselves when their fractional interest clashes.”

S’South PDP c’ttee condemns crisis

South-South Zonal Working Committee, ZWC, of Peoples’ Democratic Party, PDP, yesterday, called on the warring factions in the rivers crisis to put the interest of state above other considerations.

A statement at the end of its meeting in Asaba, Delta State, condemned the breakdown of law and order perpetrated by the state lawmakers.

Dr. Steven Oru, PDP South-South Chairman said no effort would be spared in the resolution of the crisis rocking Rivers House of Assembly, adding that the zonal committee would soon embark on consultation with stakeholders for the restoration of peace in Rivers.

Oru said the stakeholders would visits top PDP functionaries from the zone and PDP National Chairman, Alhaji Bamanga Tukur, Chief Edwin Clark, among others.

It passed a vote of confidence on President Goodluck Jonathan for his transformation agenda, stabilisation of the national economy, enhanced security of lives and property.

Politics › Don't Distract Jonathan, M/belt Tells North by chaloner(op): 9:50am On Jul 28, 2013
Middle Belt People, under the aegis of the Middle Belt Forum, have said the North will be deceiving itself, if it thinks the only way of grabbing the presidency in 2015 is to destabilise the government of President Goodluck Jonathan.
They, therefore, advised governors Murtala Nyako (Adamawa), Sule Lamido (Jigawa), Rabiu Kwakwanso (Kano) and Babangida Aliyu (Niger), who have been traversing thecountry seeking audience with former leaders, to sit at home and resolve the security problems facing the North.
This was contained in a statement signed by aformer member, House of Representatives, Mr. Aminu Zang, in Jos on Friday.
In the statement entitled, 'The North, deceit and illusions of 2015,' MBF said the activities and pronouncements of many northern leaders did not portray them as elders but as champions of sectional and primordial interests.
It read, "Our attention has been drawn to the activities and pronouncements of the governors of Adamawa, Jigawa, Kano and Niger states, who have been going round thecountry. The objective of these activities, asthey themselves trumpeted, is to get a 'northerner,' by which they mean Hausa-Fulani, to replace President Jonathan in 2015 -- or even by any means possible.
"After meeting with Rivers State Governor, Rotimi Amaechi, in controversial circumstances aimed at inciting tension between the Niger Delta and other parts ofNigeria, the group proceeded to Abeokuta to see Gen. Olusegun Obasanjo (retd.) and, thereafter, to Minna to meet with Generals Ibrahim Babangida (retd.) and Abdulsalami Abubakar (retd.) to 'report' President Goodluck Jonathan. They reportedly asked the two generals to intervene in a way that will make 'our dreams become a reality.'
"Gen. Ibrahim Babangida, the man who annulled the June 12, 1993 presidential election and championed the northern consensus programme that excluded Dr. Sarah Jibril, thereafter, declared them patriots for their actions.
"The direction these people are coming fromis obvious. Like Prof. Ango Abdullahi and a few others crying themselves hoarse about 'It is the turn of the North (Arewa) in 2015,' it is inconceivable and totally unacceptable to them to be out of power 'for so long.'
"As far as they are concerned, only them should rule Nigeria, notwithstanding the fact that the Hausa-Fulani North have had, as President and Prime Minister, Abubakar Tafawa Balewa, Shehu Shagari, and Umaru Yar' Adua. They have also had Atiku Abubakar and Namadi Sambo as vice-presidents." http://mobile.punchng.com/output.php?link=http://www.punchng.com/news/dont-distract-jonathan-mbelt-tells-north/

Politics › APC Vows To Shut-down Abuja If They Are Not Registered by chaloner(op): 9:03am On Jul 28, 2013
The All Progressives Congress (APC) has vowed to close down Abuja, the federal capital city, if by July 31, 2013 the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) fails to recognise it as a registered political party.

The APC is a merger of the Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN), All Nigeria People’s Party (ANPP), Congress for Progress Change (CPC), sections of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) and the Democratic People’s Party (DPP).

Deputy National Secretary of the CPC and one of the major conveners of the APC, Chief Okoi Obono-Obla, who reacted to strong feelings published by the media that the INEC was considering scuttling the registration of the merger party, warned that what is happening at the moment in Egypt and other countries would happen in Nigeria if the INEC decides not to register the party on the basis of any flimsy excuse.

Speaking yesterday to Sunday Independent on the issue, Obono-Obla, who represented the CPC in the interparty merger committee, said as much as the report is speculative, he believes that INEC will register the APC because it has no reason not to do so. He however warned that anything to the contrary would be seriously resisted in the streets of the country.

Obono-Obla said: “I don’t want to rely on that story. It may be speculative because I do not believe INEC would want to stand the law on the head by not registering the APC when we have complied religiously with all the procedures and all the requirements prescribed by the constitution and the Electoral Act. So, I will not want to give credence to that story. It is just a mere speculation.

“The information I have which is privileged is that INEC has given us a pass mark. They scored us 99 percent. The committee that INEC set up to go and see our secretariat and look into our papers scored us 98 percent. And INEC met on Thursday; that report was tabled before INEC and, from my source, the meeting was adjourned to Thursday next week and all things being equal, by next week INEC will make the announcement. You can put two and two together from what I have said and what you have read in that story. I believe that by Thursday when INEC reconvenes, INEC will register us.

“If there is an attempt not to do that, then we will know that our democracy is in trouble. Maybe what is happening in Egypt, Turkey and Brazil would take place in Nigeria because we are going to march to Abuja and demonstrate until we are registered. If there is any attempt to fail to register us, we are going to do that. We are going to show that we are the biggest party in Africa, not the PDP; that APC is the biggest party in Africa. We will mobile our supporters; we will storm Abuja and close it down.”

The CPC chieftain said as long as the APC was concerned, it met all the requirements set by the law and the procedures of INEC, stressing that the rival African Peoples’ Congress (APC) which he described non-existent as a registered political party cannot stop the merger party from being registered.

His words: “As I said previously, our application was submitted on the 8th of June, 2013. And section 84(6) says INEC has 30 days to take the decision, but when they fail to take the decision, at the expiration of the 30 days, the party is deemed registered.

“If you read that report, the media adviser to INEC has reacted to that story. He said the time will start to run from the 1st of July when we submitted the list of Interim National Officers. For that one the 30 days will elapse on the 31st of July 2013. I believe that by the 31st of July the party will stand registered whether or not INEC says so or not. And I do not have any cause to believe that INEC does not want to register us because of the pending case. That case does not concern us at all because there is no restraining order that says that INEC should not register us. That case is just a child’s play by some desperate people who are under the payroll of the PDP.

Politics › A Great Escape... From Borno JTF Camp by chaloner(op): 11:41pm On Jul 27, 2013
Sometimes, the innocent suffers in the hands of those charged with the responsibility of protecting him or her. Suleiman Abubakar appears to be a victim in this regard as he tells ISAIAH BENJAMIN, Kaduna of his alleged ordeal in the hands of the Joint Task Force (JTF) in Maiduguri, Borno state

Abubakar, 26, hails from Damasak Mubir local government of Borno state. He is a tanker driver by occupation and plies the Kano-Lagos route but has not been able to do so because of the challenges propped up by insecurity in Borno state.

According to him, “In view of the state of emergency in Borno State and the poor network coverage within the area, I boarded a vehicle some times last month and was heading for a place where I could possibly make calls to my family. There were 15 passengers on board the vehicle, 10 males and five females. We were stopped by the JTF at Baga road check point and were taken to Giwa barracks.”

Continuing his narrative, Abubakar stated that all occupants of the vehicle, including himself, were thereafter taken to the JTF camp and kept separately.

He alleged: “At the JTF camp, we were heavily beaten and tortured for no just cause. They tortured us everyday. Many of the people we met there died and the JTF disposed of the dead bodies. I concluded that someday I was going to be killed or would die as a result of the torture.

“In the course of this harrowing ordeal, it occurred to me that I had about N34,000 on me which I hid away from them when we were searched. As the torture became more unbearable, I then summoned courage and approached one of the JTF members who asked if I had anything to give them if they assist me and I told him about the money.”

Determined to escape from the dungeon, Abubakar continued to befriend the JTF personel and appealed to them to device a means of getting him out of the camp alive.

About two weeks after his ‘capture’, mother luck smiled on Abubakar. He told LEADERSHIP WEEKEND: “After giving them the whole of the N34,000 which I told them I had on me, they agreed to help me escape. One day, as they were taking away a set of six dead persons, I was told that was the only way I could escape. I was asked to lie down alongside the lifeless bodies in a JTF Toyota Hilux truck and we were conveyed out of the camp. I was abandoned along the road while they proceeded with the dead bodies to an unknown destination. As I was by the road side helpless, I was recognised by a friend who was passing by and came to my rescue. He took me to the general hospital Maiduguri.”

Abubakar however said the situation took a new twist at the hospital as he was allegedly refused treatment without a police report.

“My friend had to go and look for a policeman and appealed to him before I could be admitted and treated for three days after which I was discharged,” Abubakar added.

While his ordeal lasted, Abubakar said his family members had concluded that he was dead.

“But when they saw me eventually after I was discharged from hospital, they advised that I should come and stay with one of our relatives here in Kaduna for my safety and that is why I am here.” he said.

Politics › Break-up 2015: No Jonathan, No Nigeria-biafra Activists Should Vote Out Jonathan by chaloner(op): 1:40pm On Jul 26, 2013
Succession politics have heated up the polity so much that President Jonathan’s kinsmen have threatened 160 million Nigerians that if he loses the next election, they will break up the nation-therefore proponents of Biafra, Oduduwa, Arewa republics should take the cue and vote out Jonathan in 2015.
Goodluck Jonathan became the president of Nigeria on a platter of gold (death of Yar’adua and Boko Haram attacks) under an obvious divine interjection. His predecessor Yar’adua became presidenton a platter of gold (Obasanjo do-or die electoral malpractice and ruling party convention manipulations). Obasanjo too became president in 1999 on a platter of gold (Babangida and anti June-12 elements used him to frustrate Olu Falae).
Now the same break-up of Nigeria whichcaused the civil war is being offered on a platter of gold-‘If Jonathan Fails We Break-Up Nigeria’. This is the story militant leader Asari Dokubo, Kingsley Kuku and others, both young and old, hasbeen singing. They claim they are threatening the north-but actually they are threatening the entire Nigeria. Theyare actually warning Afenifere, Ohaneze, Arewa, MASSOB,OPC, Boko Haram, CAN, PFN,SCIA and all groupsin Nigeria that if kinsman Jonathan fails the 2015 election, there will be no Nigeria. According to Dokubo, ‘’I want to go on to say that, there will be no peace, not only in the Niger Delta, but everywhere if Goodluck Jonathan is not president again, by 2015, except God takes his life, which we don’t pray for’’. Kingsley Kuku Special Adviser to the President on Amnesty told US Deputy Assistant Secretary of State (African Affairs) in Washington DC that’ It is only a Jonathan presidency that can guarantee continued peace and energy security in the Niger Delta”
These and numerous other inflammatory statements are self serving and devoid of reasoning. Instead of these warlords advising their kinsman to apprehend the subsidy thieves who stole N1.7 trillion ($12 billion dollars) of Nigeria’s moneyand use the recovered funds to provide employment and other FRESH AIR he promised Nigerians, they are threatening everybody. Instead of telling their kinsman to seek for the recovery of the $67 billion dollars embezzled from the time he was Vice President under Yaradua till date when the lid was opened by Mrs Oby Ezekwesili and use such to provide enabling critical infrastructure in Nigerian , they are threatening everybody. Instead of telling their tribesman to investigate the people behind the $1billion dollar Malabu Oli deal, a fund that can construct ten new federal universities, they are threatening war. The truth is that such silly noise making has done more harm to the Jonathan presidency than anything else.
There is no doubt that the north is under the curse of nemesis –with the Fulani herdsmen creating confusion all over the Middle Belt and South-the prospects ofa united northern challenge is impossible.
The Yoruba west is observing at the entire scenario, knowing that they wouldn’t bat an eye if the nation breaks up. I want to state it categorically that Yoruba have nothing to lose if Nigeria breaks up and as such when such ethnic inflammatory nonsense is spewed out- they should stop being cowardly and dare the break-up.
The middle-belt will not lose much under a broken Nigeria. Since they started serving the core north, they have been rewarded with religious riots, herdsmen attacks and marginalization.
The core north will even recover from a balkanized Nigeria. Mallam Shekau and his criminal band have at least shown thatthey have an ideological base to their struggle-they want to practice their Sharia without western influence-which the north is entitled to if that is what they want. Shekau and his marauders have refused to be bribed to drop theirmurderous ideology despite all the billions offered by different negotiating groups since the conflict started. If they manage to control the north- they will most probably wipe off corruption and child marriage in a matter of weeks.
For the Ijaws, they are ready for the break-up of Nigeria. Senator Joseph Waku and Mallam Nasir El-Rufai among numjerous informed outsiders have already made the matter an open issue. Bayelsa state has its own national flag and national anthem and coat of arms. The problem is that the Western countries are not yet favorably disposed to an Ijaw Republic. There is fear in the US that militants and criminalelements within Ijaw nation will overshadow and control the bureaucrats, professionals and progressives among them making the new republic another conflict zone. Discuss with these militantsin Transcorp Hilton, Nicon Luxury, Rock View and other hotels they usually lodge and enjoy themselves in the city of Abuja ,you will discover a mindset ready to pillage the nation and go their way.
Where does Biafra stand in all these? The usual unpreparedness that cost Biafra the civil war. North is ready to confront Jonathan. Jonathan’s kinsmen have made a plan B. Yorubas may catch in on the situation to declare Oduduwa republic. Igbos are just clinging to Jonathan as if the destiny of over 50 million of them depends on him-arrant nonsense. By the time Jonathan sells themto protect himself and his people’s aspirations, they will cry betrayal they way they cried over Awolowo.
MASSOB, BILIE, ALADIMMA, BIAFRA FOUNDATION, Ohaneze Youths and all the groups seeking for the actualization of Biafra should utilize this golden opportunity. Mobilize and vote the incumbent out in 2015 and Ijaws will declare an Ijaw republic-in the ensuing confusion, declare a Biafra republic and have your freedom. Jonathan and his kinsmen are not interested in Biafra. They want their own country-Ogoni, Urhobo, Ishekiri all want separatist republic-and they may have back- up plans. What are Igbos doing-talking nonsense on facebook and twitter and whining around Jonathan presidency-instead of strategizing on how to contain the situation if things get out of hand.
By the time the prepared Ijaws goes home with the Yorubas under the saddle of Tinubu-who might declare himself the Emperor of Oduduwa Republic-the nextconfusion will be in Igbo lands and another pogrom and genocide against Igbos will begin in the north.
Asari Dokubo, Kingsley Kuku and other war mongers are talking some ethnic nonsense. However, this nonsense can turnto common sense-vote out PDP in 2015 and cue behind the Ijaw ethnic warlords to reclaim Biafra Republic, Oduduwa Republic, Benue-Plateau Republic, Sharia Republic and Boko Haram Republic.
Personally, I do not subscribe to the break-up of Nigeria. Every tribe in Nigeria has its good, bad and ugly and if the good ones join hands, heads and hearts together, they can reclaim back Nigeria from the forces of disintegration and shepherd the nation togreatness. If the incumbent can deliver on a quarter of his electoral promises, by 2015 the opposition will have nothingto use to campaign against him. However, with ethnic warlords and supporters of the president beating drums of war, separatism and threatening that come 2015, no Jonathan, no Nigeria, daring all of us, then to hell with Nigeria-lets help them break up the nonsense.
