@paddy_lo

well said.I also understand d multiplier effects.But u see our problem is multi-dimentional (maybe due to our history) ,economics alone cannot provide all the answers.dats y i said institutions matter ,be it economic,religious,traditional,educational etc.

so if u can get a manufacturing boom,housing/construction boom,and financial services boom. . .
GDP can accelerate to more than 10%/annum easil

you see paddy_lo Nigeria got alot of problems that what u enumerated above cannot handle alone.This is still same thing the IMF and the WORLDBANK tell us.We are only concerned abt d volume of our GDP not its Value.What is d value of a good housing scheme when d house only get to the rich and privileged few?

we need the right INSTITUTIONS that will efficiently transmit these changes we desire.Institutions matter alot.There is need 4 us to do away with d idea of Rent Seeking also.Everybody wants a share of the national cake without knowing where it is baked.Do u Know d % of our GDP that goes into 'settling' the God fathers?these r some of our problems.

See my broda I do not want u to b d US Economist who talks only about GDP,deregulation etc am not against them either but the right institutions must be put in place b4 all these things r done.

If u go with that u will see that right now we are roughly where Indonesia was 10yrs ago. . .

I always smile whenever pple compare Nigeria with Indonesia.By 1972,b4 d 1st oil boom xperienced by both countries,Nigeria and Indonesia were almost same in economic terms:agrarian,multi-ethnic,gdp,religious societies and both xperienced an oil boom 4rm abt 1973 and thereafter.But the only d/f is that they took different policy choices.

I am also a fan of the Refined Market economy.

Thats why u had slavery for 200yrs lol. . .u see the slave was property,and the rights of the owner had to be respected. . .

But this also led them into war with the south .lol I was not talking about the wisdom of man 4 that has failed us.There has been so many theories and prescriptions on how to get things going to no avail.

People still dont know how dangerous it is for a family to own such huge stakes in a sensitive institution like a bank. Especially in a country where regulatory authorities do not function properly. Hmmmm, upon all that has happened people still do not understand. Amnesia is a serious disease in nigeria.

Are u saying they should v taken the money to swiss banks like ur broda Abacha?

But come to think of it,must a cbn gov talk carelessly in public like a pregnant woman?has he 4gotten dat whatever he says d mkt picks it?where did he study his own economics or was it talkanomics he studied?
PoliticsRe: Withdraw Or Be Disgraced, Daboh Tells Ibb by chamber2(m): 2:12am On Jul 19, 2010
I think for we Nigerians this is a period of sober reflection.It is a time we as a nation v to fall back to our creator as the only source of hope.Americans built their hope in God and Nigerians built theirs in man.It is not a question of IBB,Jonathan or even my mother rather that of character,integrity ,discipline and vision deeply rooted in the fear of God.Accordingly to the former president of Tanzania (Nyereye),"as others are planning to get to the moon we r planning to get to our village." What sense does this make to us as a nation? there is need 4 us to try the untried,to xperiment d unxperimented and to discover the hidden.

i spent 1 whole yr in oyo state,precisely bodija ibadan without feeling d impact/presence of govt.Infact there is no govt in oyo state.I think d pple of oyo should rise up to this challenge and say no to mediocrity.The level of joblessness in d state is alarming. It was only in oyo state that I saw a PhD holder teaching in a secondary school.unemployment,underemployment and insecurity is endemic.I used to hear of ibadan but got disappointed on getting there.the only hotel,premier hotel is like an old hunt in a village in d 4mer bendel state now edo.

God will rescue oyo state 4rm d hands of these vultures.

U cant turn skepticism into a natural way of thinking and not miss out on glaring opportunities.

The people of Nigeria v become atrophied and the mistrust of govt and people in govt is as a result of many years of seeing govt systematically lying to its people.So u dont blame d pple 4 dat,just give us some time.

Regarding the bingo called Sanusi,I dont just v a word 4 him now.Soludo remains a hero.
PoliticsRe: Ajibola Advocates Return To Parliamentary System ! by chamber2(m): 5:46pm On Jul 17, 2010
our problem isn't in d form of govt which we practice rather in d crop of politicians who constitute d system.d selfishness,greed and ignorance of our leaders is really d problem,never d form of govt.

Paddy Lo: Growth in M2, given stable exchange rate, indicates steady GDP growth

Pls where did u get this 4rm?

What of a situation where money supply is rising two to three times faster than GDP with stable xchange rate?Does this also indicate steady GDP growth?

FOR THE NON PROFESSIONALS/ECONOMIST:

In economics, the money supply (Ms)or money stock, is the total amount of money available in an economy at a particular point in time.[1]  There are several ways to define "money," but standard measures usually include currency in circulation and demand deposits (depositors' easily-accessed assets on the books of financial institutions).

Ms=M1+M2

M2=MS

M1: (narrow definition) currency in circulation+demand deposits.Bank reserves are not included.
M2:represents money and "close substitutes" for money.M2 is a broader classification of money than M1.M2 is a key economic indicator used to forecast inflation.

That relation between money and prices is historically associated with the quantity theory of money. There is strong empirical evidence of a direct relation between long-term price inflation and money-supply growth, at least for rapid increases in the amount of money in the economy. That is, a country such as Zimbabwe which saw rapid increases in its money supply also saw rapid increases in prices (hyperinflation).

dats exactly what I am asking.What do we have 2 show for these outrageous figures?
PoliticsRe: Fg’s 7% Growth Report Questioned by chamber2(m): 2:54pm On Jul 17, 2010
Macro Economic Indicators

Broad Money M2 N

Credit To Private Sector N
Inflation Rate - Year On Year % %
Inter-Bank Rate %
Monetary Policy Rate %
Treasury Bills - 91 Days %
Deposit Rate %
Prime Lending Rate %
Crude Oil Price (Bonny Light) US$
External Reserves US$

Crude oil is just part of it.

PoliticsRe: Fg’s 7% Growth Report Questioned by chamber2(m): 11:16am On Jul 17, 2010
Also,our understanding of how well d economy is doing r frequently influenced/dominated by d yearly fluctuations in economic activities.The question we should ask is,what determines growth?what is d role of capital accumulation and technological progress to growth.If we can provide answers to these issues then we r making progress.

what can we say of FDI since d 1st Q?what can we really say of credit availability?Those who live in Nigeria will tell u clearly that there is no evidence of growth.That is also where I v problems with d GDP as a true measure of growth.
PoliticsRe: Fg’s 7% Growth Report Questioned by chamber2(m): 10:08am On Jul 17, 2010
What makes Economics exciting is the light it sheds on what is happening around the world.Inasmuch as I will accept the fact that these two guys are right in their various analysis(depending on the angle u view it 4rm) I will also quickly add that all these are not necessary.The question remains,did our economy actually grew at 7%?And if yes what evidence(s) do we have to support this?

IMF,CNN,WORLDBANK etc cannot answer these questions for us,we have to provide the answers base on the realities on ground.I think d reason y our country has not developed so much as expected is that our experts who r supposed to b d engines of developmental ideas spend more time studying the activities of these in't agencies or the US than studying our economy.And that is y an average prof.in a Nigerian uni cannot comment effectively on the happenings in our economy but can deliver a full gospel on d US economy.

Also statistics cannot answer all d questions.There is more to facts than numbers.Did our GDP grew at 7% out of borrowed money?pls lets come home.
