dbshaywhy: Good day friends, here is a 3 bedroom flat and 2 room and parlour self contained foundation as shown in the picture. Filling is on going presently, next after that is the setting of the blocks to the final level. My enquires are; How many blocks will it required? How many bag of cement and cost of sand (mind you, there will be 15 pillars)? Can it later be floored after block setting, mind you, am using 9 inches block all through? Thanks in anticipation. It is better to get things done properly now that you are still in this stage.... Doing your German floor now will save you from lot of headache later From experience here are some advantages we have noticed German flooring have over normal flooring 1) German floor is also part of the foundation, it should be seen as a structural elements that makes your house to stand. Loads transmitted from the building is recieved by the German floor before transferring to the foundation 2)German floor stops the upward movements of water from the soil into your building. I am sure you wouldn't want your walls to be damp or see algae grow on it. Lastly, oversite concrete can Serve as a breaking point when there is a non major crack to the wall, it prevents this crackline from getting to the foundation. About the cost estimate, you will have to provide the plan as that will serve as basis for the estimation CharisDESIGNS |

Amblessed2020: I don’t reside in Nigeria, therefore I was not there to know the type of soil used or what was done during the construction. As for the engineer, he is no longer building for me, so I can’t reach him to get the answers. Well The situation can still be savaged if you are sure the foundation was done properly. Just employ the service of a very good engineer or an experienced builder to help you.. These are what you should look out for and ensure its perfectly done. 1) Break the entire floor if need be. Import and place laterite, then ram, ram, ram and ram, if possible get a compacting machine for better compaction. 2) introduce brc wiremesh 3) To avoid upward movements of water, introduce damproving membrane 4) let your engineer try not to be economical about the oversite concrete, it should have a thickness of at least 100mm eventho 150 is preferable. Then they should use the correct concrete mix Moreso if it is a storey building get a structural design, as all this details are spelt out therein as guides to whosoever that's supervising CharisDESIGNS |

Amblessed2020: Hey guys, I have a house that’s currently under construction. It is past decking level, but we started to notice some holes on the German floor. What could be the cause of these concrete collapse? Is it an indication of foundation problem? How can it be corrected. Someone said the floor is not German , it's italic (that's on a lighter note tho) Now consigning your oversite concrete (German floor) I think you or your engineer should answer this questions, because therein lies your answer 1) was the soil underneath or the soil used to fill the dpc laterite? Because what I am seeing here (I might be wrong tho, is loose peat soil). The importance of using laterites for filling can not be overemphasized. 2) was the filling compacted enough to be able to sustain and carry the compressive load of concrete coming on it (this i obviously doubt) 3)Let even assume that the first two was done properly, where is the brc wire mesh, that is supposed to be introduced because I arnt seeing any traces. Simple, wire mesh are always very important because, it provides tensile strength to supplement concrete's compressive strength 4) Did you follow the right mix ratio for the oversite concrete CharisDESIGNS |

I strongly want to believe you don't plan staying in the building yourself, because if you the owner were to, then the plan is ok, except for the kitchen door Orientation that someone has rightly mentioned, then the vwc you have to access from out side
If however however you still want to go ahead and make changes (reduce), Ask your architect to make the rooms 3.3*3.6m, biko Ensure not to touch the main lounge dimension, unless he is redesigning outrightly, you can go ahead to reduce the dinning to 3m, ditto kitchen |

joycluv: Thanks. But does it mean that if 9" are used, then there wouldn't be the need to extend the columns to the first floor? No please... You definitely need to extend them to the first floor.... Think of a column as a rectanglar table with four legs at the corners, The weight of the table (self weight) and the object on the table (roof) is transferred to the floor through the legs acting in compression. In this case the legs can be considered as columns. Hence you definitely need columns at the upper floor to effectively transfer your roof load/ beam load to the foundation |

joycluv: Can 6inches solid blocks be used to build a duplex from foundation to level? Yes it can (tho I don't normally encourage clients to) However if you must, try as much as possible to have your columns consistent throughout, from ground floor to first floor. Again work with a functional structural design |

FIRSTSECOND: Hello House, I seriously need an advise from the professionals in the house. My challenges goes forth, I own a land in Alimosho area of Lagos. The said land belongs to the Federal government through the Federal Housing Authority (FHA). But I have a building development and Structural plan duly approved by the FHA in year 2000. Though the building has not been completed. But fast forward to year 2020, Lagos State Building Control Agency (LABCA) officials sealed up the building that I have to obtain their own documents also that the one FHA issued is now obsolete or null and void. Please professionals in the house what can be done as regards this? |
