The All Progressives Congress in Ekiti State has raised the alarm over alleged plans by Governor Ayodele Fayose to ambush the campaign convoys of its presidential candidate, Gen. Muhammadu Buhari (Retd.) as he comes to the state on Saturday, on a campaign visit. The APC State Publicity Secretary, Taiwo Olatubosun, in a statement in Ado-Ekiti on Monday alleged that Fayose had already hired members of Oodua Peoples Congress to attack the convoys on their way to the rally as Peoples Democratic Party did in Rivers State. “They are also to strike at the campaign grounds to cause stampede,” the party said. The OPC members, the party said, were engaged as task force men to be removing the posters of APC candidates and had removed Buhari’s posters pasted in his campaign office in Ado-Ekiti as well as those pasted in the party’s office in the state capital. The APC said Fayose’s desperation knew no bounds as he took the front page advertorial of a national daily on Monday depicting that Buhari will die in office like three other Presidents from the North died in office. “This is dangerous for our national unity and ethnic harmony. Fayose is dangerous to Nigeria’s unity and the earlier the authorities, Nigerians and Ekiti people in particular appreciate this, the better for us as a nation,” Olatubosun said. According to him, the OPC members were already in town to be deployed to entry points to Ado-Ekiti where they would ambush APC members on their way to the campaign grounds. “This is a clear case of undermining the peace agreement by eminent international leaders last week among the nation’s political leaders. It is sad that after President Jonathan campaigned in Ekiti State, Fayose sent signage officials and OPC thugs to be removing our candidates’ posters after paying necessary fees to the agency.” “Fayose’s hatred for Buhari knows no bounds, as his aide was behind a fake medical report on Buhari declaring him as a prostate cancer patient. The APC said Fayose was prosecuting the presidential election as the last battle of his life with its attendant security challenges. The vice presidential candidate of the All Progressives Congress, Prof. Yemi Osinbajo, said an APC-led Federal Government would provide steady power supply by installing Independent Power Projects in strategic parts of the country. The Senior Advocate of Nigeria added that his party would ensure that the privatisation of the power sector was given a larger scope if the APC was voted into power. Osinbajo, who is the running mate of Maj. Gen. Muhammadu Buhari (retd.), said this at a Ketu town hall meeting organised by Friends of Osinbajo in Lagos on Sunday after he delivered a sermon as a guest minister at the Abundant Life Model Assembly Parish, Ketu, Lagos of the Redeemer Christian Church of God. He said already IPPs were being used to provide steady electricity in courts and hospitals across Lagos State and this could be expanded. He said, “What we must understand is that the Federal Government has privatised power distribution and generation, not transmission and we feel transmission should be privatised as well. We don’t have power today because generating plants can’t get gas supply and this is also largely because of the bad pipes. “If we wait until we can set up proper gas infrastructure, it can take 10 to 15 years before we can get steady power supply. “So, we have decided to decentralise power. For example, in Lagos we have IPPs in Marina which generates 10 megawatts and it powers hospitals and courts. We also have in Ikeja. They do not have problems of gas supply. The IPPs are directly connected to the place we want it to power. “If we can mobilise our trade groups in certain areas, we can provide 24-hour power for them. Also, we can then provide for local governments. In Lagos for instance, the state government already knows the power needs of each local government so we can provide IPPs as well.” Osinbajo added that the price of gas must also be deregulated so that more private companies could invest in the sector and increase power supply. The APC candidate also berated the Peoples Democratic Party-led Federal Government for failing to address the issue of insecurity. While making reference to a CNN report in which soldiers claimed that they paid for their uniforms and boots with their money, Osinbajo said it was evidence that President Goodluck Jonathan was only paying lip service to the fight against insurgency. He promised that Buhari, as an ex-serviceman, would not take the issue of insecurity with levity if voted into power. He said, “A few days ago, I watched Nigerian soldiers on CNN saying they had to buy uniforms and boots with their own money and these are people we are sending to lay down their lives for us. This is the most irresponsible thing. “So far, we have spent N4tn on defence and yet our soldiers don’t have enough equipment. Buhari will lead as commander-in-chief from the front. Jonathan says Buhari did not buy rifles when he was in power and yet we’re presented facts that show that between 1983 and 1999, no government spent on the military more than Buhari.” The Deputy Director General of the Buhari/Osinbajo Campaign Organisation, Senator Olorunnimbe Mamora, urged the people of the state to ensure that they voted massively for the APC, adding that Nigeria needed change more than ever. There was panic in the camp of the Peoples Democratic Party in Abuja on Sunday as President Goodluck Jonathan met with the national leadership of the party behind closed doors. The panic was said to have come as a result of the gale of defection rocking the party across the country. The other reason was what a member of the National Working Committee of the party described as the “lacklustre response we have been getting since the beginning of the ongoing presidential campaign.” The meeting was held at the PDP Presidential Campaign Office, Legacy House, Maitama, Abuja. Journalists were barred from the meeting which was described as a “family affair.” It was also learnt that the President and the party leaders were not comfortable with the support the opposition, All Progressives Congress was getting across the country, especially from those leaving the ruling party. The meeting, it was learnt, examined the circumstances that led to the defection of some members of the party in Plateau State, led by a former Deputy Governor, Mrs. Pauline Tallen and many others to the APC. One of those who attended the meeting told our correspondent in Abuja that, “You know that we have usually taken each presidential election as a done deal since 1999. “But now, things have changed. With what we have seen so far from the tours of the southern part of country, we need to work harder to win.” It was also learnt that the meeting discussed the release of funds to some departments in the campaign organisation, an action which was said to have made many of them inactive. Meanwhile, as the campaign train of the party move to the northern part of the country on Monday (today), the PDP has said it will win the February 14 presidential election. A statement issued by the National Publicity Secretary, Mr. Olisa Metuh, in Abuja on Sunday, said that the party was well received in the zone. He said, “As you are aware, in the last two weeks, the PDP presidential campaign train has visited states in the South-West and South -East geo-political zones of our great country. “The PDP deeply appreciates Nigerians for their support, goodwill and prayers for our dear President and standard-bearer, President Goodluck Jonathan Source: http://www.punchng.com/news/panicky-pdp-leaders-meet-jonathan/ |

While surfing through the internet i came across this article that really cut my attention and I will like to share it here. SOURCE: http://www.dotearth.blogs.nytimes.com/2015/01/12/where-terrorism-is-normal-nigeria-and-news-france/?emc=edit_ty_20150113&nl=opinion&nlid=69543525&_r=0 WHERE TERRORISM IS NORMAL (NIGERIA) AND NEWS (FRANCE) It’s heartening to see a growing discussion of the lack of attention that’s been paid in recent days to the latest atrocities committed in Nigeria by what The Times recently described and mapped as “Boko Haram, the other Islamic State.” Incidents in recent days have included deadly attacks involving young girls strapped with bombs. On a grander scale, there has been a massacre in the long-suffering town of Baga, on Lake Chad’s shore, although initial reports of more than 2,000 slaughtered by hundreds of Boko Haram militants are being challenged by the Nigerian military, which says the toll is more like 150. The truth will out, of course, as was the case in a military assault on the town in 2013. (Satellite imagery helped clarify what happened, as did Human Rights Watch.) In the meantime, Max Fisher at Vox has posted a helpful overview, noting that “the story of the Baga massacre is a story of Boko Haram’s depravity but also of the Nigerian military’s abject failure.” It would be easy to miss the Nigerian developments behind the saturation coverage of the murderous attacks on the Charlie Hebdo office and other targets in France, and the subsequent outpouring of support for the victims. African journalists, among others, are trying to widen the focus. On the South African website Daily Maverick, Simon Allison wrote a tough piece aptly titled, “I am Charlie, but I am Baga too: On Nigeria’s forgotten massacre.” But it’s also true that a simple comparison of coverage can miss underlying conditions that make terrorism so perversely normal in one place and exceptional elsewhere, as Matt Schiavenza noted on The Atlantic website yesterday: The main difference between France and Nigeria isn’t that the public and the media care about one and not the other. It is, rather, that one country has an effective government and the other does not. The French may not be too fond of President Francois Hollande—his approval ratings last November had plunged to 12 percent—but he responded to his country’s twin terror attacks with decisiveness. Not so Nigeria’s Goodluck Jonathan. Since assuming the presidency in 2010, Jonathan has done little to contain Boko Haram. The group emerged in 2002 and has consolidated control over an area larger than West Virginia. And it’s gaining ground. Perversely, the seemingly routine nature of Nigeria’s violence may have diminished the perception of its newsworthiness. Tipping the balance in Nigeria toward more effective governance is vital if promising trajectories on girl’s education (despite Boko Haram’s efforts) and agricultural productivity are to be sustained. My view:May God save us from the cruel hands of this existential threat to human lives in North east. |

Got this info back in April, 2014 where surfing through the net. Following reports in some national dailies that Ebola fever had been detected in Nigeria, Federal Executive Council (FEC) Wednesday said the reports were false as there was no Ebola fever in the country. Briefing State House correspondents after the weekly FEC meeting, Minister of Information, Labaran Maku said Ministry of Health during the week under took quick checks to verify these reports, adding that so far all the tests showed clearly that there was no Ebola fever in the country. "Nigeria is prepared right now to curtail any outbreak particularly given reports that few counties on the West Coast like Liberia, Sierra Leone and Guinea have reported cases of Ebola fever and given our proximity to these countries Nigeria is ready, the ministry has every precaution including getting with vaccines and medicines to ensure that should there be any incidence in Nigeria, everything would be dealt with precision”, he said.
