Few days ago, Professor Wole Soyinka made the following statement

This statement struck me and I realized painfully again that the process of someone being described as guilty is now very flawed especially with the advent of the Social Media.

The following are steps people now use to destroy other people's reputation.

1. Accuse him or her of something sensitive (rape, sexual molestation, attempted sexual molestation, husband snatching, home breaking etc)

2. Ensure you the supposed victim appears vulnerable and weak as it is certain for the society to support the underdog.

3. Swear, rant and get all emotional on Twitter, Facebook and Instagram.

4. Within a space of five years, get 2-3 more people to accuse him or her of similar things as you did.

5. Don't bother to show any evidence, just keep on repeating your story and tagging people on social media.

6. Many people will believe you and the man or woman would appear more guilty than how Joseph looked when his Master's wife falsely accuse him of attempting to rape her or how Mary the mother of Jesus Christ would have looked if she was accused of fornication.

Like a fellow Nairalander said,
Anybody can be accused of any offenses, but without evidence and witness, no one is guilty.

We should encourage people to be very strategic with their accusations. As much as possible, they should learn how to gather evidences. This is the 21st century. It is now easier to gather evidences about something.

This is necessary so as to prevent character assassination and also "wolf cries" as this would reduce support that would have been given to genuine victims in future.
