I have always been appalled when i listen to people speak some kind of ''Americanized English'' after living abroad for some period of time. I have always dissociated myself from such people who ''form'', as they put it until recently i found myself in a similar position. Hence i have decided to share from my experience why people compulsorily need to adjust/change their accent when they travel abroad. Before i begin a brief history.

I grew up Delta state, attended a first generation federal university and always wished i could further my studies abroad. 5 years after graduation, my wish came true. Had a graduate teaching assistant position in an American state university. The first time i had to teach undergraduate was hell. Those guys are so programmed to understand a particular type of word structure, for example if you say submit your assignment they will all be starring at you but if you say turn in your home work they will do just that. I could not communicate with my Nigerian accent. I struggled. I was forced to attend an English as a second language class with chinese guys that cannot make a simple sentence...Kai, man don suffer. Note that i had scored close to100 points in Toefl. That didn't change anything as i had a very poor evaluation report from my student.

My funding was threatened by that report as those evaluations were taken very seriously by the department. After weeks of struggling,i finally learnt the code; ''change your accent''. I did just that and almost became the best TA in the department. My evaluation report greatly improved.

I have friends here that refused to change their accent but it's telling hard on them even in the grocery store they cannot communicate. The funny thing is that each area/states has it own unique accent. The whites here have accent different from black Americans. Sooner or later, they will be forced to. After doing that for 5 years to survive, how do you expect me to return to Nigeria with my Nigerian accent intact? So, when next you see a dude or a lady forming ''accent'', think twice as it may not be intentional but a survival strategy. Contributions welcomed. Thank you.

Just saw it on CNN. It was also reported that an emergency serum have been developed for the ebola virus but it is yet to get the approval of the Food and drug administration (FDA). The drug is working on the virus. It was tested on monkeys and it prevented the virus from spreading to other cells. That's a good news.

@op, sorry about that. This is what happens when you are from Nigeria and are using their e-payment systems. What you went through is little compared to what some of us are going through here in the US. Nigerians are branded 'potential fraud'. Good people, great nation failed to achieve the re-branding of our name, it keeps getting worse. God help us.

Hello guys, a friend shared a link on online and i decided to post it here because i just cannot stop laughing. If you are able to satisfactorily explain what u ve been doing from that time like getting OND stuffs like that, I don't see it being a problem! Point is you must be able to explain the gap! Gurus abi??

The Chinese American in counter one today was the best!! He was audible and granted more visas! He actually gave me mine! In short no documents was checked throughout my wait there including mine

Thanks for that clarification, however did u pay your Sevis fee before applying for ED because the payment I made is yet to reflect on the fmjee website, want to be sure if Sevis fee payment confirmation is done by them before approving ED.

How did you make the ED request and what items did you send? Is it Abj or Lag?

iamchux: I only attached my i-20, didn't attach my SEVIS receipt nor Admission letter. I guess that's where I messed up!

I was denied on Monday,my school resume on 8th Jan but the last day to enter the school is 21th of jan as it is stated on my i-20.The earliest date the appointment site is 13th which kind of too late for me. pls someone should explain how to go about the emergency thing.thanks

Have u been denied visa in the last 6 months? That could also be a reason!!

Meanwhile Abj or Lag where can I get the earliest date for visa booking?
