hahahah 9jia
them no dey waive am ooohhhh

Rdfactor:
Thanks for the tip. So it means you basically need to apply on your school website for OPT first, and that'd prompt them to send an updated i20 for work authorization to the USCIS. Thanks. Some people talked about a way to have this $410 waived I don't know 😆
TravelRe: General USA Student Visa Enquiries-part 17 by chibertha(f): 2:58pm On Mar 23, 2023
Since you are none STEM you should have one of the plans below;

Look for OPT accompanies that will file H1B for you,
or
Get any company that accepts you and stay there and look for another that will give you H1B

or

Go for PhD straight or another maters that is STEM eg health informatics

or go for PhD or another study after your 1 year OPT

Then while in PhD consider NIW

NOTE
you can not do OPT again if you go back for the same level of study after the first one so think am well well

las las you will be fine

Kenny4smart:
Guys, just a quick one about the OPT thing please.
I understand that it is a one year work permit during or post study for international students in non STEM degrees.
If I activate the OPT while doing a 2 years Msc program, the permit should be exhausted one year into that program. Now, what happens in the second year please?
Further, If an OPT has been exhausted during study. Am I eligible for a new OPT after graduation?

Your clarity on the practicality of this will be very much appreciated 🙏

Warm Regards.
TravelRe: General USA Student Visa Enquiries-part 17 by chibertha(f): 6:15pm On Mar 22, 2023
I got my EAD in early Feb. It was from USCIS. Your school will give you I-20, which you would use to apply.

So first, you apply on your school sight for OPT, then get approved and sent an updated I-20, which you will use to apply for your EAD from USCIS.
The cost is $410 as of today.

Note
Start applying for jobs 6 months before your graduation so that you do not get stranded.

Rdfactor:
Sounds good. I'll probably be looking forward to OPT by the ending of the year. Man's got to take a u-turn for some reasons LoL. Have you gotten your EAD card? I learnt application is now directly from the USCIS. Do you need a new I-20 for OPT? I'm yet to really get myself involved in the OPT thing.

add GRE to your CGPA and try those schools again.

Jesusweptoh:
Hello nairaland fam,
Please I’m really worried about something and I would love to share it on here
I have a low gpa of 2.57 on a scale of 5.00 in my undergraduate mechanical engineering
So I would love to know if there are schools anyone can recommend to me that would accept me for masters degree
I’m just worried because I’ve got admission refusal from MARSHALL and UNIVERSITY OF NEW HAVEN and since then I’ve been down because they’re the school my hopes are on because of the high acceptances rate

I don’t know if anyone can advise me and also recommend school that accept low gpa of 2.57/5.00
TravelRe: General USA Student Visa Enquiries-part 17 by chibertha(f): 5:02pm On Mar 22, 2023
add GRE to it too
Jesusweptoh:
I’m also considering WES but someone said with the low Gpa Some schools will accept it and also I did really nice in my last two years gpa
I had 3.85/5.00 in my last two years my friend said some school makes use of gpa of just last two years but I don’t know if anyone can help me with the schools

I will get my visa from Germany then come home and get married and then apply for his I-20 then he can join me.

Estherbabe1000:
Hello everyone, I am new to the U.S. visa thread and I have gone through some parts of the thread as well. Guys I really need your help to answer all my questions . It’s somehow complicated, so I will give some background details
I currently live in Germany, had my bachelors degree in German language in Nigeria and studying M.A intercultural communication( would be done in July hopefully)
So I got admitted and was given a funding of 18,500 for a masters program in German studies. Tuition fee of 20k was waived.
The issue is I have a fiancé in Nigeria and I would love that we apply together, which means I have to come to Nigeria, get married so we apply together from Nigeria as well.
Guys would you advise, I apply from here while he applies for a dependent visa after I must have gotten my visa. I read there is an issue with appointment dates .
How much POF would he need, my school said I don’t need any.
I am unmarried now, will this affect my applications in any way since the school is dealing with me as a single person. Also at the point of visa interview, will this affect me? Because I will have the court wedding few days/ weeks to the wedding since I filled the form as single. Note , I can’t afford coming earlier, I can only fly home once. Please guys help me by responding .

MS graduating in April and starting OPT in May.

Rdfactor:
Lol. Thanks. Are you studying? PhD or. Ms? Looks like we exchanged comments before
TravelRe: General USA Student Visa Enquiries-part 17 by chibertha(f): 9:03pm On Mar 21, 2023
You nailed it
Rdfactor:
It depends on the length of the program you're planning to do. While it's easier to wiggle through a Ms program without funding since it's a 2yrs program, once you have support from home, place of work, your savings and the little hustle you are able to do on Campus trying to raise money, the same can't be said of PhD (it's a 5-6 yrs program). I don't advise people to take PhD admissions without funding. Working shifts to raise $30k tuition per year isn't as easy as you've been told.

That said, if it's a PhD, I'll advise you seek funding. Even if it means you'll reapply to better schools that'll give you funding+admit. You'll get one as Long as you do the right thing. Even if it means you have to stay 6months more in Nigeria to seek for funding, do it, it's worth it. The stress of school+ the stress of looking for Money to pay your tuition will backfire no matter what anyone tells you.

If it's a Masters degree without funding and you have enough savings or you have alternative means of getting money, it's fine. It's Only for two years, and things get easier after that.

The point here is make sure the POF you want to use will be one that's consistent, one that will sustain you through the program.

You need to have help from somewhere. Otherwise paying your way through $30k every year is crazy. Funding is important. And getting one is easy if you put in the work. Even if you work 24hrs nonstop for 6months at McDonalds, you might not be able to raise this type of money.

My advise is that make sure you have the means to pay your tuition; either through an assistantship, your own savings, company's money, family fund or other means. I'm saying this because I know how it is.
TravelRe: General USA Student Visa Enquiries-part 17 by chibertha(f): 6:32pm On Mar 21, 2023
your school should advise you on the next steps.

I-20 ETC

So reach out to them or wait for them to send you the instructions.

Tehilla23:
Please house, after the acceptance of my admission offer, what do I do next?
TravelRe: General USA Student Visa Enquiries-part 17 by chibertha(f): 6:30pm On Mar 21, 2023
Gbam

Rdfactor:
Thing is if you advise an average Nigerian to be careful about using agents, to work on getting their own admission and funding themselves, and that all these things can be done by them, they feel you don't want them to come. You see things like "he's discouraging me from japa" "he doesn't want me to come" . These are obvious desperation. Take your time to figure this thing out and you'll get what you want.

That's why I stop giving them candid advise. Even if I see one without funding coming for PhD, instead of me to tell him to convince the school to give him funding, I'll rather advise him to come because it is easy to pick $50,000 on the street in the US. That's what they want to hear. Anything contrary, you become their enemy

You can defer as many times as possible but with a fee this time.
The schools know the challenges of international students including this one you are facing.
toluene23:
Bro
It’s the second time the school assisted me in my deferred letter all coz of getting date and they adjusted my the resumption day upfront so that I will be able to get a date. My first letter was November last year and this second time the date on the letter was moved to March 13 to 20 and now I can’t find date and my emergency date was not approved again.

What should I do now?
Or is it possible to still be considered for deferment again the second time ?

Or it’s the end of the road?
And channel my energy on getting another admission again?

You might have to look for work visa thread.
This is for students
Yhlopppp:
Hello everyone,

I'm not conversant with this thread unlike the Canadian study visa thread I'm really use to but please I would really appreciate our response. Because of how much information I get about the Canadian study visa that's why I thought of coming here

My mum told me just this evening about her plans to go to the USA for 6months on a work visa, I'm not so in support of this so I really need all information I can get while I take time to go through this thread to maybe discourage or encourage her if she has a chance

1. Please how would she go about it? She told me about her younger sister sponsoring her
2. I really don't want her using an agent cause she told me she already has one. Please is it something I can process for her? I mean like a DIY thing Do it Yourself

Please help a sister
TravelRe: General USA Student Visa Enquiries-part 17 by chibertha(f):
That's not an issue if it's only educational information that was misrepresented.
Just do it by yourself this time with the current school.

Lawal1555:
Greetings,

Please, I’m having a little challenge with my previous ds160. In 2016 when all hopes were down, I tried using an agent to secure a US visa. While filling out the ds160, he misrepresented me by putting the wrong institution and program without my knowledge; I discovered this error when I demanded a ds160 printout. I went for an interview, and I was denied; I stopped applying for any visa and started building my life.

Now I have secured admission with funding, how do I face the challenge of conflicting information on my previous and current ds160? Do I put my real institution because there is no way I would continue with the school he filled in the last ds160?

Please help me.

If it is for spring 2024 tell her you will take it and differ your till then even after getting your visa.
Dreamsss:
Amen oo.

Congrats in advance jare. Keep practicing your pitch on how you tutored students; your strategies to get them engaged, what you enjoy in it...you can use Google for basic teaching assistant questions. I don't think they ever go crazy as to ask really professional teachers questions, but go the extra mile, if you can.

Funny thing is that one woman told me she has an opening in January, without even any interview...then when I reminded her that I was admitted for the fall term, na she remember say na spring she de find...mscheww. Tease.
Of cos, I still de her neck like this..for toying with my emotions.
