The 2010 Jos riots were clashes between Muslim and Christian ethnic groups in central Nigeria in and near the city of Jos. Jos is the capital of Plateau State, in the middle of the divide between the predominantly Muslim north of Nigeria and the predominantly Christian south.Since 2001, the area has been plagued by violence motivated by multiple factors. The clashes have been characterized as "religious violence" by many news sources, although others cite ethnic and economic differences as the root of the violence.

The first spate of violence of 2010 started on 17 January in Jos and spread to surrounding communities. Houses, churches, mosques and vehicles were set ablaze, during at least four days of fighting. At least 326 people, and possibly more than a thousand, were killed.

Hundreds of people died in fresh clashes in March 2010. The slaughtered villagers were mostly Muslims, slain by machete attacks from groups of Berom mobs. Hundreds of Hausa-Fulani more the area in case the perpetrators returned. Lots of Hausa-Fulani were killed and dumped into wells. Some of the Hausa-Fulani women were raped and taken as slaves.

This is the third major incident of rioting in Jos in the last ten years. Some one thousand people were killed in riots in 2001, and at least 700 died in subsequent violence in 2008.

On 19 January, the violence spread to smaller towns and villages south of Jos. Armed mobs, mostly Christians from the Berom ethnic group, attacked Muslims, including Hausa-Fulani residents, killing or driving them out and burning their homes, mosques, and property. The worst massacre took place on 19 January in the settlement of Kuru Karama, where 174 people, including 36 women and 56 children, were killed. Satellite images released by Human Rights Watch show the near complete destruction of buildings in Kuru Karama.


Before dawn on 7 March 2010, Muslim Hausa-Fulani herders massacred more than one hundred Christians in Dogo-Nahawa village near Jos. Residents in the village were mainly Berom Christians. The attacks went on for four hours, and nearby villages were also targeted. The attackers fired guns to cause panic and as people fled chopped them with machetes. They set alight many of the buildings and left corpses dumped in the streets. Many of the dead were women and children, including an infant less than three months of age.

The state police command reported that 109 people died in the attack, including at least 38 children. A state official told journalists that more than 500 people were killed, while a plaque at a mass grave in Dogo-Nahawa states that 501 died in the massacre, and lists the names of 354 victims. Other community leaders put the death toll at 164, including 34 women and 98 children.

I have never been a fan of state police and infact in the past I have vehemently criticised any attempt to even think of it but today after witnessing the way the Federal police has been Hijacked by just a few lucky terrorist thereby leaving the fate of over 100 million Nigerians from the middle belt and South at the mercy of these terrorist I have become an overnight supporter of state police as all my previous reasons for resisting state police has well been rubbished by the Buhari govt ..... all the fears you have laid out against state police is currently what obtains with the Federal Police Under Muhammdu Buhari like the fear of governor abusing their powers using state police but Buhari govt is already doing that with the Federalis Policia , you talked of one sided employments by the governors but Buhari is already doing that , you talked of the governors using state police to hunt perceived political opponents but the Buhari govt is already doing that , infact all your valid fears about state police are already being lived out by the Buhari govt so what's there to fear again except room for improvement..in the last 3 years we have watched how our Federal police have been reduced to a sectarianist motley crew pursuing a strict sectarian agenda of sectarianists who seized power via a valid democratic election ..

If State police never appealed to many before today Buharis poor handling and use of the police has made state police a hot cake and opponents of state police like me have today bought into it .

Another suggestion I have if we must avoid this state police route is for the Federal police to post indigenes back to their home state to do the policing work e.g Kano state will only have policemen from Kano origin posted there , plateau state will only have policemen of plateau origin posted there etc.... I am of the opinion that this will not only address alot of the issues we currently face but will also address the issue of Bribery and corruption as police officer from Kwale in delta state posted to Kwale will find it hard to collect bribe from his kins men neither will he accidentally kill them because he knows he will return to them when he retires so must be in their good books before then .... State police or not one thing is certain and that's the Nigerian Police has to be rethought all over from scratch as the current system has to many glaring loop holes.
