Politics / Governor Abubakar Sani Bello Calls For Adequate Security To Enhance Better  Edu by Chiefpress: 8:36pm On Jan 31, 2022
GOVERNOR ABUBAKAR SANI BELLO CALLS FOR ADEQUATE SECURITY TO ENHANCE BETTER  EDUCATION

Governor Abubakar Sani Bello of Niger State and Chairman North Central States Governors'Forum (NCSGF) says there cannot be any meaningful development in the educational sector unless the safety of lives and property of the people are guaranteed.

The Governor stated this at the official flag-off of the North Central Zone 2022 National Campaign on Out-of-School Children  held at the Government House, Minna.

Governor Sani Bello noted that the security challenges faced by the state as well as its land mass constitute major challenges to be considered by the Federal Ministry of Education in order to achieve the desired goal of the campaign to return out-of-school children back to school.

He said, because of the security challenges faced in the state as well as other parts of the country, parents find it difficult to release their wards to go to school.

"Obviously, anywhere there is insecurity, you don't expect parents to allow their kids to go to school especially in situations where they are being kidnapped for ransom."

"We need to apply more efforts towards addressing issues of security and making our communities safe because, if they are not safe, it will be difficult to convince them to go out to school."

"While we make efforts to reduce the number of out-of-school children, we should make more efforts in ensuring that we provide security to protect lives and properties", he added.

Governor Sani Bello however, maintained that the security challenges, if addressed, would allow for a smooth and rapid growth in the educational sector.

The Minister of State for Education, Mr. Chukwuemeka Nwajuiba said the Federal Ministry of Education is interfacing with the Niger State Government to ensure that children are taken out of streets and returned back to school.

He said the Ministry has reviewed the work so far done by Niger state in it's educational sector in the past 7 years, confirming that much progress have been made in the number of school enrollment.

Speaking on the  challenges faced by the state, the Minister said the Federal Government is aware of the security challenges faced by the state adding that President Muhammadu Buhari has already directed that all security agencies  be on ground to tackle insecurity in the state.

He assured that Niger state government will receive more support as every other state, especially in the light of it's own peculiar circumstances in order to be able to deal with the obstacles in the educational sector.

The Minister also disclosed that remote learning facilities have been put in place to manage school distance and to ensure proximity.

In their separate remarks, the state Commissioner for Education and the Chairman, Niger State Universal Basic Education, Dr. Isah Adamu said Niger state is committed to drastic reduction in the number of out-of-school children to ensure a peaceful society.

They said, with the help of the Northern state Governors and other critical stakeholders, the state was able to embark on a joint interstate action which helped the state record some successes in reducing the number of out-of-school children from 513,963 to 298,192.

Also speaking, the Director Basic Education, Dr. Mrs Olatunji Davis explained that the programme is the second phase of the several interventions that the federal ministry of education is embarking on to ensure a standard reduction in the number of out-of-school children in Nigeria.

She then called on stakeholders in the education sector to contribute their quota by adopting children of school age and supporting their education.

Highpoint of the flag-off ceremony was the presentation of educational materials to learners and teachers.

Politics / Niger State Ranks Top In Neo-natal Care Says A London Based Renowned Professor by Chiefpress: 3:02pm On Jan 18, 2022
NIGER STATE RANKS TOP IN NEO-NATAL CARE SAYS A LONDON BASED RENOWNED PROFESSOR OF MEDICAL ENGINEERING

Niger State special care for baby unit at the Jummai Babangida Maternal and Neo-natal Hospital Minna, has been adjudged the best in Nigeria.

A Professor of Medical Engineering Technology from Imperial College of London, United Kingdom, Prof. Hippolite Amadi stated this shortly after conducting journalists round the unit to see the equipment installed and the efficient services being rendered.

Speaking to journalists,  Prof. Amadi explained that he has been involved in new born care for over 25 years adding that he has visited all the Federal Government Teaching Hospitals and some State Teaching Hospitals in Nigeria and can attest to the fact that in terms of equipment and capacity, the special baby care unit in Niger State is the best.

"There is no any consultant apart from me that has worked in virtually all the Federal Teaching Hospitals and some State Teaching Hospitals in this country to see babies, practice and train Doctors and Nurses.

"I know what is happening in other places I can categorically say, is the Special Care Baby Unit of Jummai Babangida Aliyu Maternal and Neo-natal Hospital Minna Niger State and the rest of them in Nigeria" he asserted.

The London based Professor of Medical Engineering maintained that the hospital has made huge impact in saving lots of babies born prematurely and need special care in Nigeria as he was able to create the needed pieces of equipment suitable for the Nigerian environment.

He disclosed that the unit which became operational in 2017/2018 has been excellent in managing premature babies as it usually attends to over 800 babies in "their peak months" and on average, over 500 babies monthly pointing out that babies as low as 600 grams are being managed successfully in the unit.

"The management is quite excellent because how we do this is by comparism in mortality rate and we have less than 10% death rate at the Neo-natalHospital in Niger State.

"If we are seeing this huge number of babies every month, it tells you that the place is very functional. And it also means that there is high success rate. The Hospital has saved babies as small as 600 grams, he said.

He expressed gratitude to the Governor Abubakar Sani Bello led administration for partnering with Consultants to have the best Neo-natal unit so as to achieve its common desire of reducing Neo-natal deaths in the state.

Wife of the Niger State Governor, Dr. Amina Abubakar Bello who is a gynaecologist, commended the efforts of the state government in collaborating with Prof. Amadi to be able to have an efficient and effective Neo-natal unit that is saving lives of babies that would have ordinarily not survived because of the conditions surrounding their delivery.

"Am extremely proud of what we have in our SCBU here. Niger State government and the Staff of the Jummai Babangida Maternal and Neo-natal Hospital should be proud of what is here.

There are very few centres in Nigeria that have the kind of equipment and the kind of work that have gone on in this facility in the last three, four years", she said.

Dr. Amina also commended the state government for giving the needed attention to all the three strata of the health sector in the state in terms of infrastructure and capacity building of the staff.

Speaking on measures taken to sustain the successes recorded in the Neo-natal unit beyond this administration, the Commissioner for Health, Dr. Muhammad Makusidi said "we have trained a lot of our Doctors and Nurses so that they will have the knowledge of the indigenous technologies as the machines are customised to our environment".

He said Medical engineers within the Ministry of Health and even outside the state were also trained to be able to maintain the equipment.

The Commissioner said the state has, hard to reach areas hence government desires to scale up activities of the unit to atleast three health zones out of the six health zones in the state.

Pieces of Equipment available at the Neo-natal unit  (in-born and out-born babies )are Radiant wormer, resuscitation machines, incubators, phototherapy machines, oxygen concentrators, polite heart oxygen, transport incubators (used outside the hospital even to other states) errand incubators ( used within the hospital), invasive and non invasive ventilators, power station to ensure a steady power supply and firefly for the treatment of jaundice in babies within 48 hours among others.
