CRITICAL STAKEHOLDERS IN SUPPORT OF CLOSURE OF ALL STATE-OWNED ROADS TO HEAVY DUTY VEHICLES IN NIGER STATE

Niger State Government and critical stakeholders in the state have agreed to the closure of all state-owned roads to heavy trucks to preserve the roads; allow for the speedy completion of those under repairs, like the Minna-Bida Road; and reduce carnage on the road.

The position emerged after a meeting of critical stakeholders and the Niger State government presided over by the Chairman, Infrastructure Project Monitoring Committee and the Chief of Staff to Governor Abubakar Sani Bello, Ibrahim Balarabe held at the Government House Minna.

A restriction of movement of articulated trucks has been scheduled to take effect from the 15th of this month on the following roads: Minna-Bida, Lapai-Paiko, Lapai-Muye, entrance of Zungeru-Wushishi, and Chanchaga Bridge-Maikunkele.

The meeting agreed that the restriction of articulated vehicles on all the state government roads has become necessary to draw the attention of relevant federal authorities to urgently fix deplorable federal roads in the State. This is to allow for quick reconstruction of the Minna-Bida Road, awarded about six month ago, but not making appreciable progress due to the high volume of heavy duty vehicles.

The State Government enjoined the stakeholders to partner with it to achieve the desired objective, while imploring the understanding of all and sundry pointing out that such initiative comes with some inconveniences, however it assured that it is in the best interest of the people.

Some of the stakeholders present at the meeting included Chief Imam of Minna Central Mosque and Chairman Imam Forum Niger State, Mallam Ibrahim Isah Fari; Chairman, Christian Association Nigeria (CAN), Rev Matthias Echioda; All Progressives Congress (APC) stalwart, Alhaji Abubakar Magaji; members of the State House of Assembly; Commissioners; Chairmen of the affected Local Government Areas; representatives of the road transport sector; representatives of security agencies and other top government functionaries.

Politics / Niger State Government Urges FG To Consider Landmass In Revenue Sharing by Chiefpress: 6:28pm On Sep 02, 2020
NIGER STATE GOVERNMENT URGES FEDERAL GOVERNMENT TO CONSIDER LANDMASS IN REVENUE SHARING

The Niger State Government is asking the federal government that landmass should be a consideration in the revenue sharing formula for the country.

The State Commissioner for Finance, Zakari Abubakar, disclosed this in an interview shortly after the Revenue Mobilization Allocation and Fiscal Commission (RMAFC) led by its Federal Commissioner, Barrister Patrick Mgbebu Nworu, met with Governor Abubakar Sani Bello in a closed door meeting at the Government House, Minna.

Abubakar noted that the landmass of the state is the largest in the country with its topography having environmental challenges such as annual flooding, noting that the ecological fund for the State is not sufficient.

The Commissioner appealed that a certain percentage should be added to states that are challenged by environmental hazards.

He said the state is challenged by its size as opposed to the revenue that accrued to it, adding that if the landmass is considered, it will assist the state government to access and tackle the environmental challenges.

“In the consideration of the indices of revenue, the issue of landmass should be given a lot of weight", he said.

The Commissioner also pointed out that the number of Federal Roads criss-crossing the state is another issue that should be factored in the revenue sharing formula by the Federal Government.

The RMAFC Federal Commissioner, Barrister Nworu, said the commission members were in the state for advocacy and sensitization on revenue data and its management.

He said their mission in the state is also to get the stakeholders to know the value and the need to submit transparent as well as verifiable revenue data.

According to him, it is the commission’s mandate to formulate ways to allocate revenue from the federation account to the states and local governments.

Politics / Governor Abubakar Sani Bello Flags Off A Pilot Scheme Of Comprehensive Model by Chiefpress: 7:20am On Sep 02, 2020
GOVERNOR ABUBAKAR SANI BELLO FLAGS OFF A PILOT SCHEME OF COMPREHENSIVE MODEL INTEGRATED QUR'ANIC EDUCATION IN THE STATE

Niger State Governor and Chairman North-central Governors Forum Abubakar Sani Bello says success in implementing the integration of Qur’anic and western education will bring an end to street begging in Northern Nigeria.

Governor Sani Bello disclosed this at the flag-off of the pilot scheme of the Comprehensive Model Integrated Qur’anic Education (IQE) programme of the State in Minna.

The Governor explained that the establishment of the IQE programme was borne out of concern for children who have been deprived of parental care as well as exposed to abuses, hunger and diseases among others, in the guise of seeking islamic knowledge.

He said the state government is set to incorporate the teaching of both Islamic and Western education, pointing out that if all northern states adopt and implement the programme, the era of almajinranci and street begging will be eliminated in the country.

“I am happy today we are flagging-off this one, it is to experiment and Insha-Allah it will work and to show that yes, it is possible, to combine western education with religious knowledge under the same roof”, he said.

The Governor said when the schools are fully operational in all the eight Emirates in the state, qualified islamic clerics in various wards across the state would be engaged to teach Islamic Studies in primary schools in their wards, adding that any parent caught sending their children to other states for almajiranci will be arrested and prosecuted.

Bello said the state government is committed to the success of the programme because, while western education inculcates a broad spectrum of knowledge and religion teaches morals, the combination is bound to produce well rounded pupils and stop street begging.

He disclosed that though the establishment of the schools is open to the private sector, it would be under strict government regulations adding that prospective private sector operators would need to prove the capacity and capability to feed and accommodate pupils.

The consultant of the programme, Sheikh Ibrahim Dahiru Bauchi, applauded the initiative of the Governor adding that it is first of its kind in the northern region.

Sheikh Bauchi said under the IQE programme, at the end of primary session, pupils in the school would have been able to memorize the entire Qur'an making it unnecessary to take children to other states for Islamic education.

The Islamic cleric urged the Governor to also extend same programme to Christians should they come up with similar programme as religious knowledge is fundamental to the society.

Commissioner for Education, Hajiya Hannatu Jibrin Salihu and the Chairman Niger state Universal Basic Education Board ( SUBEB) both said the objective of the programme is to ensure that all children are given access to education, irrespective of their status.

Meanwhile, they applauded the giant strides of the present administration in the education sector, especially in the introduction of teachers’ Professional Development Institute, adding that the centre used by the institute was renovated at the cost of N9m, while equipment were provided by Tertiary Education Trust Fund.

More centres, it was disclosed, are to be established in each of the Emirates in the state, while registration and enrollment will commence after the safe re-openning of schools.

The centre has 11 class rooms for lessons, two equipped Information Communication Technology (ICT) Centres, one library, one laboratory and one entrepreneurship workshop.

Relevant stakeholders in Road Transport sector have unanimously agreed to support the State government ban on heavy trucks on the Minna-Bida Road to allow for quick completion of the ongoing road construction.

Hence the State government is re-emphasazing its earlier call on the Federal Government to quickly carry out emergency repairs on Bida-Lapai-Lambata Road and thereafter move to Mokwa-Tegina-Birnin Gwari- Kaduna Road which are trunk A roads so that the heavy duty vehicles can ply the roads.
