GOVERNOR SANI BELLO ADVOCATES CONTINUITY IN GOVERNANCE AS PANACEA TO THE GROWTH AND DEVELOPMENT OF NIGER STATE

Governor Abubakar Sani Bello of Niger State has identified continuity in governance, irrespective of political party affiliation, as the only panacea to the sustainable growth and development of the state.

The Governor, who spoke to Journalists in Minna, said the existing political system where any government that comes to power must want to embark on and commission its own projects has led to the systemic decaying or abandoning of most infrastructure and investments made by the founding fathers of the state.

According to the Governor, it will be better to invest in the already existing infrastructure and build new ones when the need arises stressing that it was retrogressive for any new government to abandon people-oriented projects started by its predecessor(s) to start a similar one.

He stated that, having reached 44 years since creation, Niger State deserved a sustainable Development Action Plan that should be executed in the collective interest, overall growth and development of the people.

"I want to see a changed Niger State. I want to see continuity in governance regardless of the political party. Continuity is for the benefit of our people, we must establish a robust maintenance culture and ensure that investments made over 40years ago by our predecessors remain functional and don't die in vain"

The Governor noted that it was the decision of his administration, in its first term, not to embark on any new project but finish up the ones it met on ground that brought about the remarkable achievements in the Whole Schools Development Initiative where many schools were either completely rebuilt or renovated across the state.

Governor Sani Bello called for unity of purpose among the leaders and elites in the state stressing that, to move forward, we must cleanse our conscience, look critically at what affects us as a state and as a people, take responsibilities, be considerate in our decisions and confront our challenges with focus and foresight.

GOVERNOR SANI BELLO CALLS FOR ESTABLISHMENT OF 'SPECIAL INTERVENTION FUND' FOR STATES AFFECTED BY PERENNIAL FLOODING

****AS FLOOD SUBMERGES OVER 7,619 HOUSES IN 150 VILLAGES, DISPLACES OVER 17,000 PEOPLE IN NIGER STATE

Governor Abubakar Sani Bello of Niger State has called for emergency measure by the Federal Government in form of Special Intervention Fund that will assist states ravaged by flood and the consequential effect of the spillage of Kainji, Shiroro and Jebba Dams.

Speaking to Journalists in Minna, the Governor disclosed that no fewer than 17,000 people in about 150 Villages, across 20 out of the 25 local government areas of the state as well as 7,619 houses have been affected by flood, thereby distroying peoples places of abode.

The Governor who said that the spillover from the dams were largely responsible for the disaster explained that the flood has not only washed away the N80 billion investment by the Sunti Sugar Company and rendered the Staff and hundreds of Farmers jobless in the state, but that many people have also lost their lives as a result of the flood disaster.

Governor Sani Bello said the damage caused by the flood was beyond the capacity of the State Government to handle, hence the call for urgent intervention from the Federal Government and International Agencies.

"The flood has been excessive this year. Definitely, a lot of support will be required to assist those communities because they've lost their livelihood completely. It is our responsibility to do whatever we can, no matter how little, to support them", he stated.

Governor Sani Bello further attributed this year's flooding in the state, to the opening of the spillway gates of the Kainji Dam, which he said was spilling over 6,000 metric litres of water per second noting that it is first of such action in the history of the State.

The Governor also called on the Federal Government to energize the Hydro Power Producing Areas Development Commission (HYPPADEC) by making it functional adding that doing so will reduce the hardship faced by the states affected by perennial flooding.

"I am in consultation with my colleagues in Kwara, Kebbi and Kogi states on how to ensure the immediate take-off of the Commission and we will not relent until HYPPADEC becomes operationally functional", he added.

He lamented that some of the articulated vehicles that ply the road, apart from carrying more than the approved weight were not roadworthy, thus causing gridlock and unnecessary hardship to the people.

On the Minna-Bida road, Governor Sani Bello said he will remain focus on reconstructing the road but that the road will again be closed down to articulated vehicles since the State Government is yet to see the intervention of the Federal Government as agreed, adding that closing down the road will speed up the project and avoid wasting of resources.

Similarly, there is gridlock along Minna-Kontagora Road particularly between Baban Gada and Anguwan Balbela as trailers and petrol tankers have been stuck on the muddy part of the road.

NIGERIA @ 60: WE ARE NOT WHERE WE OUGHT TO BE - GOVERNOR ABUBAKAR SANI BELLO

As Nigeria attains 60 years of independence, Governor Abubakar Sani Bello has decried the persistent level of insecurity and its attendant consequences on the growth and development in the country.

Governor Sani Bello told Journalists in Minna, that the country's economy as well as the sociopolitical lives of the people will continue to dwindle unless a holistic approach is found to the security challenges and are tackled head-on.

"Security is key, and without it, the country will be struggling and it quest for sustainable development will be a mirage. We have tried as much as we can to support the security agencies, but there are allegations that the security apparatus is been compromised, which is highly regrettable".

He said the country has the capacity, potentials and wherewithal to be a producer rather than a consumer nation stressing that the nation's leadership must put her priorities right and build the courage to address all developmental challenges setting the nation back.

The Governor described as unfortunate how the country imports virtually everything adding that it was regrettable to see an oil-producing nation like Nigeria importing fuel while allowing it's infrastructure to irresponsibly decay.

"The importation of those things we can produce has led us to sustaining the industries abroad, and that is why we have found ourselves in this present situation as it were".

"I hope, at 60, we are able to tell ourselves the bitter truth. We all know what is right and wrong, but we don't have the courage to confront it. We must open a new chapter towards revitalizing and diversifying our economy and ensure that we invest in the future for our younger generation by resuscitating our moribund, dead industries".

Governor Sani Bello, however, commended President Muhammadu Buhari for retracing the development trajectory of the nation and executing policies and programmes that will, in the long run, energize and revitalize the country's ailing economy.

NIGER STATE GOVERNMENT TEMPORARILY LIFTS BAN ON CLOSURE OF STATE OWNED ROADS TO ARTICULATED VEHICLES.

Niger State Governor Abubakar Sani Bello has directed relevant agencies in the State to open up the closed roads to articulated vehicles that are carrying not more than 45,000 litres of Premium Motor Spirit PMS and 35,000 tonnes of dry cargo.

The Governor gave the directive when he briefed journalists shortly after a meeting Chaired by the Chief of Staff to President Mohammadu Buhari, Inspector General of Police, the Director General of the Department of State Services, the Group Managing Director of the Nigeria National Petroleum Coorperation and the Minister of Works and Housing all in attendance.

The meeting, the Governor said was mainly to discuss issues arising from the closure of all Niger State owned roads to articulated vehicles, where he explained the condition of roads in the State to them.

They unanimously acknowledge that the deplorable roads in the State was mostly due to the movement of articulated vehicles carrying overloads of fuel and dry cargos which has resulted to the destruction of the roads and brought hardship on other road users.

Governor Abubakar Sani Bello however said the opening of the roads is to allow for free movement of goods and services to ease the hardship that would be caused by the closure to heavy trucks, pointing out that it is a sacrifice that has to be made at this dire period for the interest of Northern region in particular and the country at large.

Under the new arrangement, according to Governor Sani-Bello, "No articulated vehicle carrying Petroleum products of more than 45,000 litres of fuel and 35 tonnes of dry cargo will be allowed into the State".

Also, special interventions are expected to be carried out by the Federal Government in the State, these include remedial works on the Bida-Lapai-Lambata and Mokwa-Tegina-Brinin Gwari roads to serve as alternative routes for articulated vehicles.

The Governor said the State government needs the support of the Federal Government to carry out remedial works on Farin Doki-Minna-Bida roads to allow for movement of heavy trucks, pointing out that the Minister of Works and Housing has reiterated the commitment of Federal the Government to completing the projects.

The Governor expressed optimism that the Mokwa-Tegina-Birnin Gwari Road when fixed, effective security will be provided on the road as it is prone to security challenges.

He then appealed to people of the State to be patient with the decision hoping that the Federal government's special interventions will be effected in no distant time.

PoliticsClosure Of State-owned Roads To Articulated Vehicles Takes Effect In Niger State by Chiefpress(op): 1:02pm On Sep 15, 2020
CLOSURE OF STATE-OWNED ROADS TO ARTICULATED VEHICLES TAKES EFFECT IN NIGER STATE.

Niger State Government has closed down Minna-Bida state-owned road to articulated vehicles due to it deplorable condition and to allow for speedy reconstruction of the road.

The official closure of the road took place with a barricade to stop the heavy trucks from accessing the road in Bida.

The closure of the road is coming after the state government had announced the close down of all its roads to articulated vehicles some weeks back.

The Minna-Bida road, which has witnessed incessant breakdown of articulated vehicles on the road, has
caused untold hardship on commuters..

Other roads closed are; Lapai-Paiko, Chanchaga Bridge-Maikunkele, Muye-Lapai, and Zungeru w- Wushishi roads.

The Government assured that the restriction of articulated vehicles on the state-owned roads would be effective as series of critical stakeholders meetings have been held and the stakeholders are in support of the decision stressing that the closure only affects the state-owned roads.

The State Government warned that any articulated vehicle caught on the closed roads will have themselves to blame as the Government has made widespread publicity on its closure.

Government however enjoined its citizens to show some level of understanding as it is not unaware of the inconveniences the restriction will cause, but it is in the over all interest of the state.

Some of the drivers of the trailers also welcomed the development of the closure saying they are in full support hoping that the restriction will bring about the desired result.

Yusuf Ahmed one of the articulated vehicle drivers who was coming from Bauchi State caught up in the barricade said it happened due to an accident on the Minna-Bida Road and appealed for consideration, adding that Minna-Bida Road was the only motorable road now as that of Bida-Agaie-Lapai-Lambata and Tegina-Birnin roads are in bad condition couple with the presence of bandits and Kidnappers along the route

Considering the current development, the initial 18 dry months time frame for completion of the Minna-Bida Road is no longer feasible due to some challenges, as such the Ministry of Works and Infrastructure will adopt measures to enable the contractors complete the project on a good time .

The Chairman of the infrastructure and monitoring committee who is also the Chief of staff to Governor Abubakar Sani Bello, Alhaji Ibrahim Balarabe in company of other team members cut across relevant ministries, departments and parastatals carried out the closure on behalf of the State government.

With the closure of all State owned roads to heavy duty trucks in the state, it is hoped that the attention of the relevant Federal authorities will be drawn to the State as it is hosting most of the Federal Roads in the Country and also bearing in mind that it is connecting the Northern and the Southern parts of the country.
