Shocking news! This one touches home... News like this makes me sometimes scared of flying... Ethiopian Airlines is one of the best in Africa, if not the best. Just goes to reinforce the fact that the frequency of air accidents can only be reduced. They can't be avoided completely. |

Education / Re: Medicine And Surgery: Is It Worth The Attention It Gets? by chnovpaul(m): 7:09pm On Apr 19, 2018 |
I studied medicine and have practiced for about four years before I decided to take a break and explore other areas. I agree with the OP in that there are many people who should have been in other sectors but are currently trapped in the hospital. Please note that Nigeria needs as many doctors as it can get, but a lot of the brains in medicine will be maximized somewhere else -agriculture, banking, etc. Unfortunately, the society believes studying medicine is supreme, and as such every brilliant kid should go for medicine. Even though things are changing, I think we need a lot more of counselors to help kids make the right decisions as to their career. It's best if a kid goes for what's the right fit for him/her right from the start and not waste time like many of us did. Many of my colleagues aren't practicing anymore - for various reasons though. We've realized that practicing medicine isn't giving us that avenue to make significant impact, and we've decided to explore and check out areas where we can maximize our potential and become who we really wanna be. But for whoever ends up studying medicine, the rigor and challenge of the training will mould the fellow into becoming a better person, and perhaps ready for any area of life. So, maybe our parents weren't that wrong after all. Maybe they knew why they wanted kids to study medicine... 17 Likes |

This is one reason why people need to keep reading history or have it sung in their ears. It's better to learn from history and other people's experiences than wait to experience the same thing. Everything else can be recovered, but a life, once lost, is gone forever. Learn from Rwanda. |

Dottore: I use a Volvo S80, and the car does writes a message on the dashboard "Coolant Low, Stop Engine". At that point, you know you just need to stop and go look. My point is, don't assume that because you haven't seen something, it doesn't exist. 6 Likes |
Politics / Re: Corruption Getting Worse In Nigeria’ — Transparency International Releases 2017 by chnovpaul(m): 10:23am On Feb 22, 2018 |
This is an example of biased reporting. The index says that Nigeria scored 28/100, one mark better than last year's 27/100. The fact that the ranking got worse was not because we performed worse, but simply that other countries did better than us, and overtook Nigeria. While I'm not saying that this is a pass mark or that we should relax, moving from 27 to 28 represents some lil' bit of progress. The point is that people should try to be objective about things...no sentiments attached. |
Politics / Re: Before Nigeria Goes The Way Of Rwanda By Dele Momodu by chnovpaul(m): 9:09pm On Feb 17, 2018 |
I can well relate to this his experience. RwandAir is definitely one of the best carriers worldwide, if not the best in Africa. Courteous staff, great service, punctual...the opposite of Arik and co. I've visited the Genocide Museum, and for the first time in a long time, I cried. At some point, I couldn't just continue anymore. I had to step aside and find someplace to process what I had just experienced. Their problem started very simply with tribalism, and degenerated into about a million people losing their lives. Unfortunately, some of the politicians and evil masters who triggered the thing disappeared and escaped the war. Now, à similar thing is rearing its head here too. The politicians are busy fanning the flames and we are allowing them to use us. It's now very easy these days to blame and accuse one tribe or the other. I simply pity us. If anything happens today, who will bear the full brunt? I can bet you that the politicians and the rich with their private jets will be the first to leave. If we like, we should keep allowing them to play us like pawns on a chessboard, or we decide enough is enough and face the reality rather than pointing fingers at one tribe or the other. The choice is ours... 2 Likes |

Crime / Re: How I Was Scammed By A Stranded Passenger by chnovpaul(m): 5:09pm On Dec 31, 2017 |
Just to update: I received a call from Uber asking for me to say my own side of the story, which I did, with emphasis on the fact that I had asked the driver to end the trip earlier on. Nonetheless, the trip was refunded and the issue resolved, I believe. Lessons learnt! Cc: Mynd44 OAM4J |

Crime / How I Was Scammed By A Stranded Passenger by chnovpaul(m): 2:49pm On Dec 31, 2017 |
So this happened today. I hope someone learns from this. I was at the car wash this morning, patiently waiting for my car to be washed. Not long after I arrived at the car wash, this guy walks in into the car wash and told me he needed my help. I was already becoming defensive and was about politely requesting him to walk away when he told me that he wasn't asking for money. Okay then. Let's hear it. And that was when my terrible experience started. He gave me a story of how he had lost his fanny pack containing his money and that he needed a ride home. How? He asked me to help him book for a taxi via Uber or Taxify. I was a bit skeptical, but because I had booked on behalf of friends in the past, and this guy appeared to be stranded and in desperate need of help, I obliged. Now, I'm wishing I didn't. Anyways, I asked him for his destination, entered it into the app, and called in the next available taxi driver. The driver came in and I went to speak with the driver. I informed the driver that I didn't know the guy and that the guy will be responsible for paying for his ride, and the driver agreed. About 20 minutes after, the driver called me that he couldn't find the passenger. What happened? He said the passenger had asked him to stop that he needed to quickly buy something. After waiting for about 10 minutes and the so-called passenger did not return, that was when he called me, and that was when I realized that I had been scammed. At that point, I told the driver to end the trip, and that I was going to take the responsibility for my mistake "in helping someone in distress". After the driver ended the call, I went back to the Uber app and was waiting for the trip to be ended. One minute, 2 minutes, 3 minutes, the trip did not end, and then the car started moving. I became a little desperate and I started calling the driver. He did not pick up. After three unreplied calls, I sent him messages that his decision to continue with the trip was his, and that whatever happens is his responsibility. I tried cancelling the trip via my Uber App, but it didn't work. I then notified Uber. I continued to follow the trip till the car got to the destination, and the trip officially ended. In my mind, I felt the driver and the passenger must have settled themselves and that it was all over. I was going to breathe a sigh of relief when I got a message from the driver, that the passenger and a friend who had come in pulled a gun on him at the destination and asked him to drive away. The driver told me that the passenger came back with a friend, and apologised and requested that the trip should continue, which he obliged to till they got to the destination. Now, he's telling me he doesn't know if he should call the police or not. I had to respond, and then sent him a series of messages making it clear that I had already told him to end the trip when it was clear that the passenger could not be trusted. I had also made it clear then that his decision to continue the trip was his responsibility and not mine. Anyways, the issue has been escalated to Uber, and we are waiting for an amicable resolution. I have screenshots of the messages we exchanged, and a video record of everything I had tried to do to end the trip immediately I realized that something was wrong. However, I have learnt my lesson. It would take the grace of God for me to even listen to a stranger (esp. a Nigerian) asking for help again. Also, I have learnt never to book a trip on behalf of any body I don't truly know - not a colleague, acquaintance, much less a stranger. I hope someone also learns a lesson or two. 1 Like |

Health / Re: Oluchi Okoro Dies At COOU Teaching Hospital Amaku In Hands Of Student Doctors by chnovpaul(m): 11:44pm On Dec 22, 2017 |
FedericGodwin: I have not seen any hospital in Nigeria where "medical students" run the place or even are left to attend to patients. When I was there, I had students, but none of them were allowed to single-handedly attend to patients. It's possible they are referring to medical interns, and these are qualified doctors. Nonetheless, many people often think any young doctor is a medical student. Ideally, for situations like this, an autopsy is COMPULSORY. You have a point - emergencies are emergencies, and it's not in all cases, even with the best of facilities and personnel, that a person survives. Nonetheless, an autopsy will reveal the cause of death and provide better insights into what happened. But this is Nigeria where an autopsy is seen either as a waste of money or a taboo. I won't be surprised if the family decides against an autopsy, and yet, everyone will be pointing fingers as if they knew the details of the case. About litigation, hmmmm...it costs money. But let the ones with money even start it. We need to start from somewhere, and hold EVERYONE in the health system accountable for their actions. 2 Likes |
Health / Re: Oluchi Okoro Dies At COOU Teaching Hospital Amaku In Hands Of Student Doctors by chnovpaul(m): 11:16pm On Dec 22, 2017 |
The fact remains, Nigerian health care system is in complete shambles. I'll try to avoid pointing fingers, but the truth is that many Nigerians have died needless and completely avoidable deaths in Nigerian hospitals. I am sure the story here has been blown out of proportion, and no doctor will stand there and fold his/her hands with a patient in a critical state. But there is often no smoke without a fire. We may never know the true story because we weren't there. Nonetheless, I once worked in the said hospital during my service year, and menh...I used to think that we had it worse in the south west. But with what I saw in that same hospital, a general hospital in the SW would beat that hospital hands down. I wonder how that hospital still remains a teaching hospital - a hospital that didn't start teaching anything until recently. RIP to the dead. I hope this serves as a wake up call for Nigerians in general. It's high time we step up medical litigation cases, if that would make everyone accountable for their actions. But until everyone understands that it's their right to get and demand the best healthcare and not leave everything in the hands of God, things like this will continue. |
