Land in those areas are relatively cheap, ranges from say 200k/ plot to 400k by 6. I don't buy land for people o, omoniles they craze especially if you leave the land fallow. @pavore, I don't know if you can get it in Nigeria but I couldnt find any since NOV. 2014. I called friends in Zaria, still didn't get any.

My tomato and watermelon farm will be at Ijede in Ikorodu. That is the pilot project, I have an acre at imota where I will settle for after my experimentation. The total cost of the seeds is 120 eur. Roma 2000@40 eur, beef 1000@50 while the water melon 500@30 eur.

I couldn't get seeds locally. I tried o but when I couldn't get I decided to get from my friend based in Germany. He got it for free of charge but will force him to tell me the total cost but sure isn't more than 100 eur for 1000 seed of Beef tomato, 1000 of Roma tomato and 500 sugarbaby water melon. Bros, I have been searching for plastic mulch now since November 2014 and if I don't get at the end of the month, I will have to import again

@Jeffmyson, I rather raise money and take the risk. Taken a loan will further increase the risk. There are lots of uncertainties in Agric business because you don't determine price at times because of market forces. Exampl, December is usually pay period for poultry farmers but 2014 December was a bad @ a at a point, I had over 300 crates no buyer, I had to bring down the price and do door to door marketing. In Nigeria there is no price control on most Agric produce that is why most times farmer at the receiving ends. We advised Lagos State to buy as middlemen and sell to retailers but lah they said they are still working on it. This will not discourage me my brother, I have imported beefsteak tomato, what is holding me back is plastic mulch.

Sorry guys, I fail to add that there could be 3 circles in a year. Each circle gives an average of 2.3tons per circle, that is 2300kg by 400 = 920k/circle

Ufeolorun, dizengoff would want you to plant tomato like Beefsteak or Roma that attract a high price. The price of this type of tomato cannot be less than 400/kg. So in a planting circle of about 180days, you are expected to get 7tons by 400 will give us like NGN 2m and above in 9 months. Please note that the first harvest starts at about 85 to 90 days after planting. Quantity and quality of produce depends on your expertise. With greenhouse farming and market, it is achievable

@jethro, where is your farm situated? Would also like to know if you have had bacteria wilt and how you approached it. Like someone mentioned, I have theoretical knowledge of tunnel farming based on books, YouTube and contact with farmers in Israel, Spain and Kenya. That is the basis brother, you don't go into a business blindly. I started my poultry farm 6 years after I had planned it on paper and Alhamdulilah, I am doing very well. Where someone spent 8m to set up a poultry farm, I used half of his budget for the same capacity even doing better than him. As a farmer, improvisation is very important that is the reason why you'd need to do extensive research b4 starting, in Agric, we use other people's mistake to perfect our plans that is the essence of forum like this. Wish everyone best of luck. I always say Agric leads to good living because you are always fulfill when you are doing well.

TAEpiphany:
On the DIzengoff website they claim their 24x8 will produce 5-7 tonnes within 6-8 months if I’m reading correctly. They also claim that’s the equivalent of what you will get from 1 hectare if you used traditional means. Jethro can you speak to this? I know you mentioned you were told you can get 20tonnes from 1 hectare.
If we place the total price to get the greenhouse running at 1.5 million and you produce at least 5000Kg (5 tonnes), and you sell in worst case scenario at 100/kg, you will be making a measly 500K after first harvest. This means it will take about 4 cycles (about 3 yrs, all things being equal) before you can even make your investment back. And you have to consider, cost of maintenance too. The figures are not looking attractive to me. They sound like a rip-off
. For a greenhouse farming, there are crops you can grow that fetch you big money. If you grow say a beefsteak tomato, you can sell them as high as 400/kg, just like you is sold in shop rite. you can go to construction companies where there are a lot of expatriate and market this specie of tomato. Another thing you can grow in a greenhouse that is very marketable in Nigeria is the English Cucumber one goes for 600 Naira in Nigeria market. Guys threads like this can't lose substance, the is like a brain storming session, i am very sure one amongst us will have a break through soon. Attached is the payback calculation of a 8x24m tunnel or greenhouse. Please don't mind the orientation, i don't have a scanner, used my phone camera

@Omonnakoda, your link is showing glass or glass-like material for greenhouse. This will only work in tropical region like ours if you add temperature control equipment like A/C or heavy duty exhaust fans. The materials is good in temperate regions with their is winter frost etc. The best material for us is the cloth like UV material of 200 microns and heavy duty insect net for proper aeration and also to prevent insect from entering the tunnel. Farming has gone beyond digging the soil that is why i want young Nigerian to try experiment with little capital we must have kept for luxury. See the picture below: it is from a farm called victoria's Vegetable in the US but it is still a tunnel farm. A front/back yard tomato farm that can fetch money and improve standard of living.

@pavore9, you are right. I have spoken with some farmers in kenya and they are surprise why it is that expensive in Nigeria considering we are giant of Africa. Dont worry my brother, by the time we lay our hands on this UV film/screen and other greenhouse materials they will be surprised because i con confidently tell you that I can construct the greenhouse( High Tunnel) perfectly.

I am looking for an agric marketer that visits china or Turkey often we can beg them to import those things for us cheaply then we will surprise Diezengoff. I imported sweetbaby water melon and beafsteak Tomato from germany expecting them Tomorrow.

omonnakoda:

So can one make money with this Dizengoff kit at that Price??

Why not? you can make money earlier than expected but your shoe go chop. Except you have a good marketing network then you can smile to bank easily but you know marketing no easy. The trick here is packaging. Identify the market, device means of attracting people to get your product. I have a poultry farm, i work in a corporate environment, i always ask the janitor to collect A4 paper rim packs with this, i sell eggs to my colleagues at the very good price better than what i will sell to middlemen that tend to eat all the profit. You could get a ziploc bag, take your product to offices, schools where you have women with persistence i am sure you can make money fast. i am sharing my some of my ideas with you FOC. But serious it works, just a little push. Sometimes people overlook the average/middle class citizens but to a large extent that is where the money is just win their hearts and you don hammer.

The Greenhouse can be constructed locally but there are constraints. You will need the following:

1. UV screen/film of about 200 microns which is not readily available in Nigeria
2. Insect Net( not the regular ones o but very strong one.
3. Dripkit
4. Training, which the most important. There are processes like desecaring, fumigation, pollination and tempearture control, these are not that easy even if you read extensively like i have done on precision farming, i will still advise you have practical knowledge. You can easily get these knowledge from Diezengoff but it is included in the total package of 8m x 24m greenhouse.

Other things required are plastic mulch and improved seeds. These also sound simple but i can bet you they are not readily available. You have some people that know the market very well the likes of Jethro and Kalusam they should be able to help you. I am just a farm enthusiast though a trained extension farmer but work in a power plant (All about the benjamins Bro)

Let me share some pictures of what i mean.

You can do an extensive research on youtube and farms in Kenya because they are far ahead of Nigeria especially when it comes to Agriculture as a whole.

OP, I agree with you on some of the point raised but you are leaving out pest and diseases. one of the major reasons why tomato doesn't do well is because of bacteria wilt. This can be controlled by greenhouse farming to a large extent. I learnt there are some green houses in owode in Ogun state, i have also seen one in Ikorodu installed by Dizengoff. Attached are some pictures, Kenya is seriously into this type of farming and they now construct greenhouses locally because of high cost.
