Science/TechnologyRe: All your Inverter problems by chris81964(m): 2:45pm On Jun 14, 2015
jumokerus:
Hi, please anyone using blue gate inverter? I just got a bluegate 2kva pure sine wave inverter and I noticed after like 20 minutes of charging the inbuilt fan starts up with a loud noise and stops like in 2 seconds . This then continues every 20-30 secs. I do not know if this is the normal way the bg inverter works. Technician that fixed it is not sure too but seller said dats how it works. Please help .
Chargers generate heat. In the inverters we install for our customers the fans come on when they are charging batteries. The higher the amps put in the more heat generated and the more frequently a cooling fan will run.

pls guru in d house, more education is needed on:standby use volt and cyclic use volt.which is to be follow when charging battery with programmeable charger control.for instance a 200ah battery with standby use volt of 13.5-13.8 and cycle use volt of 14.4-15.0,which volt range shd d charger controller be set at?
Standy use is your float voltage on your controller
Cycle use is your absorb setting on your controller.
Anything within the range given is acceptable. I use 29.8 for my Float voltage or 14.4. Your batteries can go higher.
Your float voltage on these same batteries are 27 to 27.6 volts. **** assumption is for a 24 V******
I hope that was helpful

Also check your cables and the crimps. They have been the source of a few headaches for us.

Thank you so much. I made a terrible mistake. I contacted dubious and incompetent installers. The batteries I have now cannot charge more than 50V through solar and sometimes I use external charger which charges it to 53.7v. However, immediately I put on my load, it drops instantly to 50V. I have been told the batteries are fairly used and sold to me as new ones by wicked Alaba traders. The trader has promised me new ones tomorrow.

I have spent so much and I cannot concentrate any longer. My inverter went off this morning by 6:01am cry . I need assistance

I stand corrected. In my experience with bad batteries they will charge very quickly and discharge as quickly. Does the cell have physical damage to cause what you describe?
Saipro:
Actually, bad batteries will resist a charge. It depends on the cause of the "badness". Damaged cells are certain to cause a flat voltage despite high charging current/voltage.
Satellite TV TechnologyRe: Solar Energy, A Complement To FTA by chris81964(m): 9:26pm On Jun 06, 2015
There can be a series of things going on.
1. Your controller should be able to charge to the higher voltage that I mentioned. When the batteries are bad, they do't really resist a charge. Inability to get to 58 or 59 V is a function of the charger not the batteries. Do you have the right voltage from your PV? Check the harvest from the panels. That will give you a clue.
2. What type of an external charger are you using and for how long do you charge the batteries?

I have a 5kva inverter, 8 units of 150amp batteries, 60amp PWM solar control charger, 2050Watts Solar panel (8 solar panels 250W but one 300W) and honestly I am not enjoying 24 hours uninterrupted power supply and true, I am 1.2million naira deducted. I only discovered that my batteries were refurbished and sold to me as new. My mistake was to send someone to Alaba.

Please guys, would my problem be resolved if I change my batteries to 200amp batteries? It was extremely painful to sleep with generator yesterday especially when you have solar panels on your roof.
Before you change your batteries, monitor your harvest and consumption. You have 300 AH in batteries which should take you through the night with the refrigerator and freezer switched off. You can power a few fans and a few lights through the night. Your panels add up to 2300 I am sure there is a reason for using the 300 W panel. At 50 V your batteries are not really fully charged. They should float between 52 and 54. During the bulk and absorb phase they should see between 58 and 60 Volts. Check the settings on your controller and make sure they match the battery type. I use MPPT chargers, and for the amount of money you spent on the panels and batteries you should have sprung for a really good one. It is the difference between getting your batteries to last a long time and replacing them in a very short period of time. I have had enough issues with cheap controllers and failed batteries that is makes economic sense to buy better controllers

my 20amp charger controller for my 500w panel just got burnt now,the cause unknown.what i could say is that i was on my pc when it happened and i notice that d +ve cable from panel and the +ve cable from d battery both got cut off frm d controller while d -ve was still intarct, though both +ve cable are next 2 each other on d controller.Could it be that both +ve cable touched each other?or is it over heating?.while d controller was burning my inverter continued working it was d odour of burning wire that alerted me.Anyone with d idea of what really went wrong, for future guidance.note the panels is still working because i put it directly on d battery
If you are running a 12V system you exceeded the capacity of your controller with 500 W. You are also bumping the upper limit for 24V. What is the voltage of your panels and what is the maximum voltage that your charge controller would accept? Where you within that number? What kind of protection did you have from the panel to your charge controller? What size and quality cable did you have? How tight where your connections?
These are nice places to start.
Satellite TV TechnologyRe: Solar Energy, A Complement To FTA by chris81964(m): 9:01pm On Apr 12, 2015
Glad it worked out. The connections and cabling are always the first place to check. Before you throw the battery away. Disconnect it from the inverter and let the controller charge it for two straight days. You want to see a float state of 26. 3 to 26.7 volts. Then apply a load on it it, if discharges very quickly then the battery is really bad. I will hook it up to the controller with no load for a couple of days first before I decide to discard it. Good luck

kibukila:
Thanks for your response.I have checked the connections and found the cable connecting panel and controller is fault.I have replaced it and the controller is back to fully operational. There was no correct voltage going into the controller. In the note, my battery still needs replacing since is very old bought it in 2011 its voltage is dropping very rapidly on applying a load.

You are going to have to find that out on your own. Do a Google search. There is a load calculator on our company webpage. You need to know the AH of the battery and your system voltage. Then calculate your total load. Enter those three numbers into the calculator and it will give you your answer.

I'll like to start saving for this. But this battery, how long can this one last with the above stated loads?

Battery 100 AH about N40k each, solar panel N30 to N 40 k each Inverter N20 to N35 k. Charge controller PWM N10 to 20 K. Just recognize that in that price range you get what you pay for. It will be equivalent to the cheap "I better pass my neigbor" and you will be forced to make lots of compromises. With the proper skill set you can buy your items in bits.
Purchase a very good quality inverter and battery. Then when you get more funds buy a good quality charge controller and panels

Hello house my charge controller has stopped working. When connecting the cables from the solar panel it shows no current flows from the panel. But the current is flowing the meter shows 19volts flowing from the panel.I have tried to connect the battery directly from the solar panel and it has been recharged. What can be the problem.Other functions on the controller are working.
You could have a bad controller. Check to make sure that you don't have your cables reversed. That is the most common mistake we see. Positive going into negative and vice versa. Make sure the connections are tight and you have the correct amount of voltage as required by the controller. Direct hook up to the panels I highly discourage. The battery at night will reverse the flow of electricity back to the panels. Also you don't want to overcharge your batteries. Easiest way to destroy them

Nice work is going on here.
Please i need advise.
I am using a 2 x 12v 200amp prag battery with 2.4kva 24v interver.
I'm planning to add up solar panel to my unit.
Since I'm leaving in a small apartment I'm planning buying 240watt panel x2 making 480watt.
Can someone recommend a good place to get a good solar panel and cc.
My budget is ₦100,000.00
Also how can I connect the cc to the existing setup that is using NEPA to charge.
Can solar and NEPA charge the battery at the same time?
Or one had to switch off.
I also need a simple diagram connecting 2x 240watt to a charged controller and to the inverter and to the battery.
Main while my inverter is currently charged using NEPA.
Thanks so much in advance.
First things first. The charge controller charges independent of NEPA. You connect the controller positive to the positive and negative to the negative terminals/ posts of the battery bank in the same manner the Inverter is connected to the battery bank.
N100,000 is a bit too low. You can get a PWM controller for about N50k, a really good one will cost more. I advise you buy known name brands. Don't skimp. The panels can be had for less but I will advise that you go for quality. You can buy smaller capacity and lower wattage. And as you get more funds you can add more to allow you to meet your N100k target.
If you get 140 or 170 Watt Solar world panels, I believe they are 18 V each. You can connect the plus of one panel thto e minus of the other panel and then run the remaining plus and minus to your charge controller. This will give you 36 V. Your controller will step it down to 24V.
We advice that you install a breaker or fuse between the panel and charge controller.

Thanks chris81964. I planning an upgrade mainly because my energy need will increase in the next few weeks and my current 1.4kva will not be adequate for my @1.5kwh need nor be able to charge my proposed bank of 8 200amp/c10 12V batteries. I am moving house and the new site is completely off grid. My eventual destination is solar but I want to start with something not too expensive but with the ability to rapidly charge my bank if I am using a genset. I read that Century and Bluegate have a 70amp Max charger that was why my interest. I know sukam has a 3.5kva too but being cash trapped now, I was looking for cheaper but a bit reliable inverter to use meanwhile.
The main culprit in the incessant fire incidents was NEPA!!!!! 300v surges fried my stab (Century) and the locally made inverters; seems Sukam was able to performed better - got blown once but easily repaired locally.
Install a surge protection device. It can be installed before the Inverter.

Sorry for the late response. You are not giving us enough information. Tell us more about the charge controller. How many amps. How many hours are you charging the batteries with the panels for? What is the voltage of your 100 W panels.

Talking abt charge controllers, I must confess that I appreciate the level of enlightenment I've gotten from this thread. How can one distinguish btw an MPPT charge controller & a PWM

Easiest way to tell is the price. A really good controller should cost you over N50k. If you want to splurge budget over N100k for a fairly good MPPT. Your batteries are worth it.

Start by checking the voltage coming in from NEPA /PHCN if it is too low it will not charge your batteries properly. The battery will run out quickly if it is never fully charged. They need to see a full charge daily before you use them.

Ogojohn:
Help is needed. What might be the cause of a new battery of 4 of 200amp capacity and a sine wave inverter of 48 volts capacity. The battery h charged through public power source but the charging capacity as indicated by the inverter doesnt exceed 57 percent. And this results that any time their is a power outage. The battery runs out soonest. What might be the cause of the battery not charging to up to 90 percent ? Is there anyway this can be rectified? Is the battery capacity not enough as this is meant to carry a flat of 3 room and a sitting room.

I advice people not to skimp when it comes to an Inverter or Charge Controller. We install systems in Nigeria and we had to replace sub standard equipment we installed for our clients at our cost. Most of the systems you purchase in Nigeria are designed for emergency use. The Chinese have flooded the market with equipment that try to imitate the established Inverter brands out there. There are good Chinese brands. I will ask that you Google the brand you are buying before you make the purchase. We have two systems that we have installed that work well. One is made by Voltronics and the other is made by multiple manufacturers. Yiyen and Develpower and many more. They have their benefits and disadvantages as well. The Voltronics inverter is a high frequency unit. It comes with a built in AC charger and DC / Solar charger. Works great when the sun shines. Has a poor charger. Low standby consumption pretty robust. Yiyen powerful charger and the you don't need a voltage regulator does that one it own. Has high standby consumption. It is a low frequency unit.
We have moved our products up market. They cost a bit more but all around do the job we need them to do.
I advice that you do your research before you purchase. Decide if a high frequency or low frequency inverter will work for you

Hello House,
I have followed this thread for quite a while and i had commented some time ago but it was lost when Nairaland got hit last year.

I have had my Bluegate 2kva (24v) inverter since 2011 with 4 x 200Ah batteries connected in series and parallel. So theoretically i have 24 x 400 = 9600watts.

My Inverter is analogue and has a 20A charging which i have noticed is inadequate for the system coz 24v x 20A = 480watts/hr
which means it will take about 9600/480 = 20hrs (on the assumption of 0% DOD). My constrain is that i hardly have NEPA lite and I put on my Gen. from 5pm to 1am each day (8 hrs average) but I noticed that it doesn't really charge the batteries.

I just changed all my four batteries (200ah/Bluegate).

So I am looking for a good Inverter brand with higher capacity of charging 45amps or more
with digital display to show the % charging and discharge coz I intend to increase my battery bank and buy solar panels in the next few months so the Inverter should be able to support the incoming system.
Also the Inverter would be powered mostly by a 5kva Generator. (for the mean tym)

Please I will need ur help guys.
