Thin film requires more space than an equivalent mono or poly panel. They however don't lose as much power from shading or heat as your mono and poly. durodee: |
Sorry for the late response. Get higher AH batteries. Like someone else said you don't want to exceed 4 strings. Charging and discharging becomes a nightmare. Find 6V or 2V Batteries with higher AH. schneid: |
There are 4 ways to get power today in Nigeria. The grid (NEPA/PHCN/DICO), a generator, an Inverter or a solar generator. While each has its strength, there are clear advantages some hold over the other. We will review them in Numerical order and then you can decide which is the best solution for you. 1. The grid NEPA/PHCN/DISCO. In most countries this is your first choice. It should be reliable, quick to deploy, low cost of ownership and requires no maintenance. In Nigeria and most of Sub Saharan Africa the grid is unreliable. You can go days without power. When the power is delivered it can be epileptic, too low or too high. Can be destructive to appliances and sensitive electronics. You can't plan because there is no time table for when you will have power. Expensive to deploy in ares that don't have access to the grid. http://us3.campaign-archive2.com/?u=55d08b0db7e4c09fc974f65cc&id=a3a2ad113d follow link for the full newsletter article |
This company has been a nightmare to deal with. I made a purchase of Solar Panels and the manufacturer sent them through a company called Hellman. Hellman used Vitesse Freight. Panels are exempt from duties. We are supposed to only pay duties. The lady sent a bill of N360000. I asked for a break down and she refused to give one. The address they have listed in the emails is not theirs. We called them and the lady claimed to be in Abuja. She gave the phone number of a lucky who said that the office was under renovation. He asked us to meet him at GT Branch by 7/8 bus stop. We went to the office address Vitesse Freight Limited 11, Ajibade Oke Street Ajao Estate International Airport Road Ikeja Lagos. The guards did not know the company and a Vitesse courrier moved out 18 months ago. We met lucky at GT Bank and he did not have our documents the shipping company asked them to give us. We asked for the address again and he confirmed the address we told him we went there. And he asked if we saw all the company trucks. We told him that they were not at that address and he said they had offices all over Lagos. We told him to stop lying. He now said he was a messenger and his boss was the secretary of the shippers council. Folks what remedy do I have? |
Newman where is the place I can come and see the batteries |
The biggest challenges faced by renewable energy users has been batteries. Charging them and getting them to last. Most people never properly charge their batteries. They either under charge them or in rare occasions over charge them. Your sealed lead acid batteries are very sensitive to being charged. If you don't fully charge them daily you ruin them. If you completely discharge them you shorten the life of the battery. Over charging causes them to boil and you loose the electrolyte / acid in the battery. A dry battery is a dead battery. Your sealed battery (dry cell) has some form of electrolyte, it can be a gel or encased in some thing else. The lead plates need it to perform the chemical reaction that releases energy. Q. When you charge your battery daily what is the maximum daily charge that you are required to put in your 12V battery? A. Depends on the manufacturer But expect between 13.8 to 14.8 Volts. Q. What is the float charge or cycle use charge for your 12 V battery? A. 13.2 to 13.5 Volts. Also varies by battery type and manufacturer? Q. Is your 12V battery charged or discharged at 12V? A. Discharged. It has to be at 13 or higher. I hope this helps you maintain and prolong the life of your battery. You can multiply by 2 for 24 and 4 for a 48V system. Open Circuit Voltage vs. State of Charge Comparison* % Open Circuit Voltage Charge Flooded Gel AGM 100 12.60 or higher 12.85 or higher 12.80 or higher 75 12.40 12.65 12.60 50 12.20 12.35 12.30 25 12.00 12.00 12.00 0 11.80 11.80 11.80 |

Sparta Man Returns from Successful Trip to Nigeria Jennifer Dericks Saturday, October 11, 2014 • 11:26pm SPARTA, NJ - Christopher Onwuasoanya recently returned from another trip to Nigeria. His work installing solar energy systems on residential homes sent him back to western African at a time when there is an increasing fear of that area of the world. The fear of Ebola, a deadly virus that has been in the headlines, did not deter Onwuasoanya from returning to continue his work for his company Atlantic Waste & Power System, Inc. The World Health Organization may declare Nigeria Ebola Free as soon as Oct 12 with no new cases having been reported for 42 days or double the incubation period; the standard used by global health authorities. The last reported contact was on September 5, the 21-day follow up as been completed and no new cases have been reported. “This country could learn a lesson about how to handle things from Nigeria,” said Onwuasoanya. The protocol was simple but thorough. “Everywhere you go they take your temperature. If you want to go to a business, they take your temperature before you can enter. If you want to go to a restaurant, they take your temperature before they let you in. In the airport you have to fill out a questionnaire and they take your temperature. http://thealternativepress.com/towns/sparta/articles/sparta-man-returns-from-successful-trip-to-nigeri?prsrc=3

Yes you can. I brought in a high frequency Inverter in May. You can't bring batteries. US voltage is 110V so when you buy make sure you are buying an Inverter that supports 220 / 230 Volts. HesInMe: Could one bring in, as checked luggage on a flight, some of these solar power units (controller, batteries, inverter)? |
obimind: Talking abt charge controllers, I must confess that I appreciate the level of enlightenment I've gotten from this thread. How can one distinguish btw an MPPT charge controller & a PWMThe biggest difference is the price. An MPPT cost almost double. On the outside you can't tell. Some Chinese manufacturers do sell a PWM as MPPT, so be careful. All MPPT have PWM capabilities. If you need to get that extra 30% from your array MPPT is worth the money. |
obimind: Yes I have a 1.4kva inverter,24 volts. 2 set of 200ah battery. The connection is in series.Get a 30 AMP charge controller and about 500 Watts in panels and you will be fine. If you can find an MPPT controller at a reasonable price it will be your best bet |
durodee: I am on my tenth generator in 4 years ( both petrol and diesel) with a monthly budget of about 100K on fuel minus maintenance!! Oh I have suffered! Why are you doing the upgrade? What do you want to accomplish with the upgrade. There are so many inverter brands in the Nigeria market. If you have had good experiences with the Sukam why would you consider another manufacturer? Everyone including me will tell you that the product we sell is the best. The user experience is what is the ultimate arbiter. The fires you experienced could happen with any manufacturer if you have a poor installation. Don't skimp on the quality of the materials and the protection you can add to your systems. There should be an interrupt device and or a fuse between your inverter and battery. The cables you be thick. As thick as you can get away with. |
Your dog is too thin. Her fur shows stress. Put the picture on google and do a search and see what come back |
obimind: For those asking for my consumption... Presently I use four fans, two LED TV 32inches and five energy saver bulbs. Now my question goes again; What size of solar panel will suit my consumption. 2ndly what size of charge controller shld I go for?I did not read where you told us what you want to charge with the panels. Do you have an inverter and batteries or are you looking to put together a system. If you have an existing system what is the voltage and how many AH do you have? |
fntekim: Actually, only 4800wh is available, as i never discharge my batteries beyond 50%.I it should not have too much difficulty charging your additional batteries. Get the batteries and give that a shot. make sure your cables are adequately sized. They become an issue once you stress your system. |
Doubling the array is not necessarily a solution. Check your charge controller first. Is it capable of handling all 2kw? That will be the first suspect. Then I will check my batteries to make sure they are not going bad. 9600 watts in your battery is a lot. I am advocate of more battery, but before you purchase additional batteries check your charge controller. fntekim: Wonderful! So this thread is still alive?? |
tundebabzy: Perhaps an electrical engineer can grab this problem by the horn and create something. ..You need to buy an inverter that will work directly off the DC loads that your panels produce. Your panels have to match your inverter. So if you have have a 12 V inverter, your panels have to be 12V as well. It is doable. Go on YouTube and you will find examples. |
GeorgeD1: tundebabzy,You can't run a grid tied system in Nigeria. |
