No fewer than ten persons were killed and properties worth millions of naira destroyed over last night clash between two rival cult groups in Omoku the headquarters of Ogba/Egbema/Ndoni Local Government of Rivers state host to oil and gas companies. It was gathered that Omoku was enveloped by sporadic gunshots fired by rival cult groups and among the victims was a chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the area, whose identity could not be ascertained as at press time. Our correspondent gathered that many people fled the community, following the clash by suspected cult members. Eyewitnesses in the area hinted that the cause of the incident arose from the fight for supremacy. It was gathered that about 10 gunmen laid siege on the community at about 2:00 a.m. Saturday, shooting sporadically at people who were startled from sleep by the sound of firearms. Occupants who tried to escape the onslaught of the rampaging cultists were shot at close range. Another eyewitness account claimed that the gun-happy cultist searched from house to house and ordered some occupants out of their houses and shot them. Victor Ahianmadu, the Caretaker Committee Chairman the local government council area confirmed that more than five persons including a chieftain of APC, were killed by the unknown gunmen. He refused to reveal the identity of the APC chieftain. It is noteworthy that the Chairman of Rivers state, Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Felix Obuah, was once the chairman of local government council. However, Ahianmadu called on residents of the community who escaped the battle to return to their houses, as security operatives has taken over the community to ensure adequate security for the innocent. The LGA urged the police to use its intelligence gathering acumen fish out the masterminds of heinous crime bring the to book. Gift Nwokocha, the lawmaker representing Ogba/Egbema/Ndoni in Rivers House of Assembly lamented the reckless killings in the area. “Over 15 persons were killed by gunmen and this keeps happening unchallenged. Our people are hopeless and helpless despite being blessed with abundant natural resources.” The Rivers State Police Public Relations Officer, PPRO,DSP Ahmad Muhammad, has confirmed the incident and attributed the shooting to rival cultism, assuring that the police has spread its dragnet to find the gunmen. The PPRO who expressed worry at rival cultism urged members of the public to assist the police with relevant information on how to track the heartless gunmen. Source: .com.ng |
Source: .com.ng The deputy Majority Leader, Mr. Leo Ogor, and some other Peoples Democratic Party members of the House of Representatives have described the inclusion of their names in the list of Reps in support of President Goodluck Jonathan’s impeachment as a scam and 'cheap blackmail by people who have lost direction' Mr. Leo OgorAccording to The Puch on Friday, Ogor stated that “the claim of PDP members joining the purported impeachment plot was a huge joke.” He described it as “laughable and cheap blackmail to mention the President’s key men in the House as being part of the plot.” The PDP lawmaker from Delta State added, “This is clearly a scam. This is cheap blackmail by people who have lost direction. “How can anyone say Mulikat (Akande-Adeola) and Leo Ogor are on the list to impeach Jonathan? How can the President’s henchmen be the ones to impeach him again? “They say they have over 200 people and they list PDP members, including myself and the majority leader? Is it not laughable?” Ogor advised Jonathan to “lose no sleep but continue with his transformation agenda.” He claimed the PDP caucus was intact and was prepared for any group that would “dare” to move any impeachment motion on the floor of the House. Similarly the Vice-Chairman, House Committee on Information Communication Technology, Mr. Tajudeen Yusuf, flayed the inclusion of his name in the list of lawmakers plotting to remove Jonathan. Yusuf, a PDP member from Kogi State, expressed shock over the development, saying he condemned the act. He said the impeachment was an agenda of the opposition All Progressives Congress, which had nothing to do with him. Describing the list as fictitious, Yusuf challenged the promoters of the impeachment project to come out in the open to defend it. He also demanded the publication of the full list of the members. He said, “I have never, at anytime, and will never sit, join, participate in any meeting to discuss any move that will work against President Goodluck Jonathan’s lofty transformation agenda, his government or the PDP. “It is ridiculous and evil for the APC in its unfortunate propaganda to insert names of PDP members, in their ungodly and inept antics to cause crisis in the polity. “The APC should not delude itself by ascribing to its members what they don’t have. Just like in the past, the PDP remains the majority in the House and at no time did PDP lose majority in the House.” Efforts to reach Akande-Adeola failed as she neither picked her calls nor replied to a text message sent to her. The reaction of PDP Reps exposed the widening crack in the impeachment plans. Investigations showed the widening division was as a result of more PDP members of the House, becoming “hesitant” and avoiding being drawn into “a hasty confrontation with Mr. President.” It was gathered that the crack might be a stumbling block for the mandatory “two-thirds majority” (240 out of 360 members) required to impeach Jonathan. Lawmakers, largely from the APC, began compiling signatures to impeach Jonathan soon after last Thursday’s alleged invasion of the National Assembly by the police and hooded Department of State Service agents. The compilation had gathered momentum, hitting about 131 after some PDP members reportedly joined the fray. But investigations revealed that some of the PDP lawmakers, who earlier “shared ideas on Jonathan’s case” with their APC colleagues, were unable to break into the main PDP group to sell the ideas successfully. However, another member, who pleaded not to be named, insisted that the plan was on course and had the backing of some PDP legislators. The APC source berated Jonathan for allegedly “killing the business of politics.” The source criticised the President for allegedly using state security apparatuses to muzzle the opposition. The source said, “This President is not a democrat. He is not. The PDP people do not want opposition. “They are threatening people all over the place, using the police and other agents of intimidation. “Why is the President killing politics? Politics is the only business we have as politicians, but he is killing it. “We will keep the impeachment plan on course; this is the first time we have come this far, having the determination to compile signatures.” The Chairman, House Committee on Justice, Mr. Ahmad Ali, told SUNDAY PUNCH that the list had more than one-third of House members to begin the impeachment proceedings. “We need one-third (120) to kick-start the process. “Right now, we have far more than one-third; so, we can start when we resume,” he added. But another source claimed that PDP members were yet to be “decisive” because they were unsure how the upcoming primaries of the party would turn out. “Many of them are holding on, hoping that they will pick a return ticket. “If they can’t get the ticket, the President must be deceiving himself to conclude that all is well; he will be surprised,” the source told SUNDAY PUNCH. The House spokesman, Mr. Zakari Mohammed, confirmed that some members were indeed compiling names to impeach Jonathan, but he said he could not speak for them. “I know of signatures, but not the number or who belongs where. I don’t know how many they are,” he stated. Asked whether the leadership of the House would likely interfere with the plan, Mohammed said the leadership would not take a decision on a matter not before it. “I can only say, wait till we get to the bridge. We will cross it on getting there. The House is still on break till December 3,” he said. |

Source: .com.ng The President, Students Union Government of Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile Ife, Mr. Isaac Ibikunle, has described as a blatant lie the report by Sahara Reporters, The Nation and some other news media houses that students of the university booed and hurled stones and other missiles at President Goodluck Jonathan during his visit to the campus on Friday. The SUG president spoke in an interview with The Punch correspondent in Osogbo on Saturday. He said that students of the university insisted on discussing with Jonathan on the increment of the fees charged by the school and the President obliged. He said, “We read some reports that the President was stoned, booed and harassed when he came to our campus. This is not correct. “Security personnel initially prevented us from seeing the president but we insisted that we wanted to discuss with him and we were allowed to see him. “We told him that the increment was too high, and gave him a petition concerning the exorbitant fees and he assured us that he would act on it fast. “I asked Mr. President to come down from the car and address us and he came down. He is our president, we did not harass him.” Ibikunle added that the President was even hailed by the students and those present when his helicopter was taking off at the university’s sports centre. He also said that no traditional ruler was embarrassed contrary to the reports in some online media. Some Yoruba leaders held a summit at the Oduduwa Hall of the OAU and Jonathan was invited as a special guest of honour at the event which had the Ooni of Ife, Oba Okunade Sijuwade and other prominent obas and Yourua leaders in attendance. |
No fewer that three expatriate construction workers were kidnapped on Friday by unknown gunmen in Bayelsa state in the Niger delta region, a security forces spokesman said. The men, two Pakistani and one Indian, were seized at Emakalakala town in the Ogbia council area, a few miles from their construction base. A witness who declined to be named for fear of reprisals said he saw sporadic shooting in the air before the men were pulled into a waiting speed boat. "A very intense search is on to locate and rescue them," said Anka Mustapha, spokesman for the state's Joint Task Force, which includes the military and police. Nigeria, Africa's largest economy and leading energy producer, is one of the world's worst countries for kidnapping, mostly in the prosperous south where abductors net millions of dollars. Kidnappings are expected to increase before elections next February since some politicians fund campaigns with money acquired through criminal networks. In late October, pirates abducted at least nine in a spate of attacks in the delta, while in the southwest of the country in Ogun state next to Lagos, gunmen killed a German construction worker and abducted another. Tragedy was Friday morning averted by Police Anti Bomb Squad at the popular Custom Market popularly known as Gamboru Market where Improvised Explosive Devices(IEDs) were de-mobilized. Apparently, the two IEDs were planted near the market and a Juma’at mosque to kill innocent worshippers and traders a security source told The Nation. Witnesses informed that some shops including lock up stalls and other open shops near the market were destroyed but no life was lost in the explosion which triggered a deafening sound that sent panic in the neighbourhood. Abubakar Sani Audu, a trader in the market disclosed that the attention of the Civilian JTF was drawn to the discovery of the explosive who latter called the anti bomb squad to de-mobilise the explosives. “The civilian JTF immediately called the Anti Bomb Squad and the army. They cordoned off the area and swung into action. “They detonated the first blast but the impact suddenly ignited a second one which nobody knew was there. We are happy nobody was affected,” Audu said. Gamboru market is next to both size and patronage to Monday Market within the metropolis where over 30 people were killed and several others injured on Monday this week. Source: http://www..com.ng |

Source: .com.ng A roadside bomb tore through a bus station near a busy junction in northeast Nigeria on Thursday, killing 40 people including five soldiers, witnesses and a security source on the scene said. The security source and witness Abubakar Adamu, a mechanic who narrowly avoided being blown up himself, said the blast set several buses on fire at the Marabi-Mubi junction, in a part of the country plagued by violence linked to the Boko Haram Islamist insurgency. “There were bodies everywhere on the ground,” Adamu said. The location is about 30 km (20 miles) west of Mubi, a town near the Cameroon border seized last month by Boko Haram militants fighting to carve an Islamic state out of religiously-mixed Nigeria. It has since been recaptured. Nigerian authorities, who rarely remark on security developments in the troubled northeast, did not immediately respond to requests for comment. There was no claim of responsibility, but suspicion is likely to fall on Boko Haram, whose campaign to create an Islamic caliphate governed by sharia law has killed thousands since 2009. Continuing insecurity is a headache for President Goodluck Jonathan ahead of February 2015 polls in which he is seeking a second elected term in office. He has asked parliament for approval to extend an 18-month-old state of emergency in the northeast. Two female suicide bombers killed at least 44 people on Tuesday in the northeastern city of Maiduguri, medical officials said. |

Source: .com.ng No fewer than 3,436 successful candidates were called to the Nigerian Bar on Tuesday in Abuja. While addressing the young lawyers at the call to Bar ceremony held at the International Conference Centre, Abuja, the Director General of the Nigerian Law School, Olanrewaju Onadeko, said four of the successful candidates came out with first class, 96 in second class upper division, 620 placed in second class lower division while 2,697 were in pass grade. He suggested a two-month intensive preparatory programme for intending candidates for the bar. According to him, “This will reduce the alarming rate of failure recorded as the years go by.” He said the Nigerian Law School had taken pro-active measures to safeguard its campuses in Kano and Yola by installing high perimeter walls with security barbed wire on top, adding also that arrangements had been concluded for the installation of CCTV cameras in all campuses of the school in view of the daunting challenge of insecurity in the country. According to him, the problem of over admission by law faculties in the country has almost been surmounted following the synergy between the National Universities Commission (NUC) and the Council of Legal Education. Onadeko charged the new wigs to adhere to the norms and ethics of the legal profession, adding that the legal profession in Nigeria had always been known to produce eminent international jurists, scholars and legal experts all over the world, with strategic positions. In his speech, the Chairman of the Body of Benchers, Chief T. J Onomigbo Okpoko, charged the successful candidates to adhere to the rules of professional ethics which regulate the conduct of lawyers and the conduct of law business by members of the profession. While admonishing the new wigs to make the rules their companion, Okpoko said: “It is obligatory that the new wigs and members of the profession by their action or inaction enhance the honour of the law profession and the dignity of its members by their words and action, whether in public or private life.” He reminded the new wigs that the membership of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) was compulsory for all lawyers under the Legal Practitioners Act, just as he advised them to respect the court and never to engage any judge or magistrate in hot exchange of words or engage in what might appear to be a quarrel with adjudicators or colleagues. Onomigbo however cited the recent behaviour of members of the National Assembly as demeaning and noted that it was not the behaviour of a lawyer “A man who jumps the fence cannot be a lawyer and I was in shock at the behaviour exhibited by some members of this noble profession,” he reiterated. He said the standards for the examination would not be stopped to accommodate anyone, so as to keep the profession competitive Meanwhile, grandson of late Chief Obafemi Awolowo, Adedamilotun Oluwapelumi Aderemi was among those who graduated from the Nigerian Law School this year. His mother, Mrs. Olukemi, said her son’s shift to study law after graduating from the Imperial College of Science in London as a Chemist was something that runs in the family, pointing out that, “her father, Late Awolowo, my late father in-law, Justice Ademoju Aderemi, my husband, Adedamola Aderemi are all lawyers, including myself.” |
