PoliticsItsekiri Group Warns Tompolo: Don’t Dare Us Again by clara472(op): 8:20am On Dec 10, 2014
Koko—An Itsekiri socio-cultural group, Iwere Peoples Congress, IPC, has warned the former militant leader, Chief Government Ekpemukpolo, a.k.a, Tompolo, to stop threatening and harassing innocent prominent Itsekiri people within and outside the state.

This warning was contained in a statement released by the group on Tuesday by its President General, Prince Ishola Ekwejunor-Etchie. It read: “Tompolo should not mistake our quietness for cowardice. We have only chosen to be civil and mature. We are made up of distinguished career men, with all necessary skills, tactics, preparedness and capacity to overrun Tompolo and his cohorts, should we choose to do so.

“We have been watching with keen interest the serial threats by Tompolo and his cohorts on the lives of our people. They disrupted the ground breaking of Export Processing Zone, EPZ. He threatened fire during the chairmanship election in Warri South-West Local Government Area, leading to the substitution of a legitimate chairman with his younger brother. We also saw how the upheaval he started led to the governor quitting his senatorial ambition for peace to reign.

“We shall not take it from him any more. He is cutting the tail of a sleeping tiger. No one has the monopoly of violence.”

PoliticsNigeria To Buy Arms And Ammunition From Russian by clara472(op): 10:24pm On Dec 09, 2014
Strong indications have emerged that Nigeria has reached a deal with Russian authorities as Western nations refuse to sell the country much needed weapons.

Based on the deal, Nigeria will buy arms from Russia to compensate for western nations' refusal to sell the country much-needed weapons.
"Nigeria has officially reached an arms deal with Russian authorities," a senior military officer told The Anadolu Agency on condition of anonymity as he was not authorized to speak to the media on the subject.
According to the officer, a high-level Nigerian delegation led by the air force chief and national security adviser travelled to Russia last week to negotiate the deal.
"Our team returned to Nigeria on Thursday after a four-day trip," he said.
"Russia has now agreed to supply us with arms," asserted the officer. "Henceforth, we are hopeful of getting arms from Russia."
Nigeria is battling a five-year insurgency by the Boko Haram militant group in the country's northeastern region, where more than 13,000 people, mostly civilians, have been killed and the local economy brought to its knees.
An emboldened Boko Haram recently stepped up its deadly attacks and seized several areas across Adamawa, Borno and Yobe – the three states worst hit by the insurgency – declaring them part of a self-styled "Islamic caliphate."
There have been complaints that Nigerian troops are using "obsolete" arms while insurgents employ sophisticated weapons.
The Nigerian military is reportedly seeking fighter jets and modern arms to tilt the balance in its favor.
"Basically, what we are buying from Russia are fighter jets," said the army officer.
"Light arms, especially guns of varying powers, can be procured from the black market; but you cannot buy fighter jets from the black market," he explained.
"A war can last many years, if not decades, if both sides rely solely on light arms, which you can get from the black market. In modern warfare, you need air power to establish superiority," said the officer.
Nigerian defense spokesman Chris Olukolade did not respond to AA's requests for comment.
Haram, which first emerged in the early 2000s preaching against government misrule and corruption, became violent after the death of its leader in 2009 while in police custody.
The notorious group has been officially outlawed in Nigeria, Turkey and the United States.
Old allies
Nigeria turned to Russia after failing for months to convince western countries, especially the U.S., to supply it with arms.
"We had to turn to Russia for arms since the U.S. refuses to sell us arms anymore," the senior military officer told AA.
"No country will be allowed to hold us for ransom," he said.
In a recent interview with AA, Nigerian presidential spokesman Reuben Abati said his country was ready to seal a counterinsurgency cooperation deal with any country willing to help its battle against Boko Haram.
It is not the first time Russia and Nigeria have had a defense arrangement.
The now-defunct Soviet Union had supplied arms to Nigeria during the country's 30-month civil war with renegade Biafra soldiers.
Most western nations sat on the fence during the conflict.
The U.S. a few days ago announced it was discontinuing training for the Nigerian military, a decision Washington said had come at Nigeria's request.
The U.S. described the Nigerian decision as "regrettable."
Nigeria-U.S. relations have foundered recently following American criticisms of Nigeria's handling of the ongoing Boko Haram insurgency.
U.S. Ambassador to Nigeria James Entwistle exacerbated the problem three months ago when he publicly said his country would not sell arms to Nigeria due to fears of human rights abuses by the country's security agencies.
Tempers flared again in November when a top Nigerian envoy to the U.S. brazenly accused Washington of sabotaging Nigeria's counterinsurgency efforts by refusing to sell it much-needed arms.

PoliticsKaduna, Nigeria’s Second Most Indebted State – El-rufai by clara472(op): 10:23am On Dec 08, 2014
Mallam Nasir Ahmed el-Rufa’i, the Kaduna State governorship candidate of the All Progressives Congress(APC) for the 2015 elections says the state is Nigeria’s second most indebted state.

Speaking in an interview, the former FCT minister lamented that Kaduna had no industrial base or commercial capacity to bear its heavy debt burden. Data as at June 2014 show that the top foreign debtors are Lagos (N162 billion), Kaduna (N40 billion) and Bauchi (N17 billion).

“From estimates, every child born in Kaduna State has a debt of N15,000. If you have a child to be born tomorrow, that child already has a debt burden of N15,000, and there are about eight million people in Kaduna State, so, you do the calculation,” he said.

El-Rufai however noted that “in spite of that, we are confident that we will find a way to work with the people of Kaduna State because there are areas of leakages, corruption we plan to tackle and there is large capacity to expand internally generated revenue.

“In spite of the fact that oil prices are falling and we are facing a dire economic situation more serious than anything that we have faced since 1984, we will do our best to improve the situation because we are committed to making Kaduna great again and we cannot do it without you. We hope once our campaigns; we will have some of you as part of our campaign team, so that you record and document every stage and expose everything.

“We want a transparent campaign and we are not afraid of having the media with us. I hope you will be vigilant before the campaign starts in the next one week or so. Keep an eye on all of us and ask us the most difficult questions and hold us to account and keep a record of all our promises and ensure that for the next four years we do not rest until we meet the aspirations of the people of Kaduna state,” he said.

Speaking on his tenure as minister, El-Rufai dismissed insinuations that he was controversial. “I do not know what you mean by controversial,” he said, adding however that he has “always maintained that I am not controversial. Look at me, I am not big and I am not very strong. Until 1999 when I became the DG of BPE, no one had ever heard of me. If I was a controversial person you would have heard of me.

“I think my fortune or misfortune in public life is that I tend to get the most difficult assignments that every other person is scared of doing. My first real job in government was DG of the BPE and my job was to sell public assets. That is controversial. It is not el-Rufa’i that was controversial, it was the assignment because people are used to government managing everything.”

“Some of these things are difficult to do and in this country if you want to do the job as written in the books, you are given all sorts of names and tags, controversial is one of them. I am not controversial, I mind my business and when I was Adviser to Gen. Abdulsalam Abubakar for one year, you never heard of me because an Adviser advises quietly. But once I am given a job and I agree to do it, I do it with all my heart and as Minister of the FCT which is one of the most difficult jobs, I did my job to the best of my ability. I do not think that the issue is whether I was controversial or not. “

“The question you should ask me is whether I left Abuja better than I met it. And I think most people in Abuja will say I did. That is what matters. Now, what about Kaduna? Kaduna is different from Abuja in many respects. So, there is work to be done here. Not everything to be done here will be loved by the people. A lot of it will be embraced by the people but if there is a job to be done and I undertake to do it, if the people of Kaduna State elect me it is because they want change. They do not want this place to be a state of bill boards and no action,” El-Rufai said.

Christianity Etc10 Scriptures That Can Get You Through Anything by clara472(op): 8:24am On Dec 08, 2014
Often in Christian circles, we talk about relying on Jesus to get us through hard times. It's sound advice, but sometimes that ambiguous concept needs an action plan. First, we rely on Jesus when we turn to Him in earnest prayer, and we feel His peace through the Holy Spirit. However, another very tangible way God speaks to us is through scripture. When we turn to the Bible for peace and comfort, we put ourselves in a prime position to feel God's love in our lives.

The next time life feels a little too hard to handle, turn to one of these 10 Bible passages, and feel God intervene to give you peace.
1. 1 Samuel 2 - Hannah's Song

In this beautiful passage, once barren Hannah praises the Lord saying, "there is none holy as the Lord." Hannah's story is particularly applicable today because she not only suffered infertility, she also endured bullying and false accusations. She is a great role model for all who are unjustly wronged.

2. Daniel 3 - Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego

The story of the fiery furnace reminds us that God is mindful of his servants, and we need not fear man's consequences if we are serving God. By the end, even the king acknowledges that God, "delivered his servants that trusted in him."

3. Psalm 23 - The Lord is My Shepard

The psalmist compares us to sheep, lovingly guided by an all-knowing shepherd. While this psalm testifies that we all will go through "the valley of the shadow of death," there is comfort because we, "will dwell in the house of the Lord forever."

4. Luke 1 - Zacharias and Elisabeth

The story of Zacharias and Elisabeth and the birth of John the Baptist remind us to trust in the Lord's timing, even when it takes extreme patience. God has a great work for each one of us if we trust in His plan.

5. Acts 9 - The Conversion of Paul

Saul, later Paul, was one of the greatest early detractors of Christianity until Jesus appeared to him. His question, "What wilt thou have me do?" gives us hope that no matter how far off the path we've strayed, we can always return.

6. Isaiah 48 - Refiner's Fire

Sometimes we need affliction to turn our hearts to God. In this chapter God says, "I have chosen thee in the furnace of affliction." He is with us even through that difficult perfecting process.

7. Esther - The Courage to Save

Following God's commandments is hard in our day, but we sometimes forget that it's been hard throughout all time. Esther's courage saved her people, courage that came from devout living.

8. Matthew 14 - Peter Walks on Water

How often do we doubt God's hand in our lives? Peter walked on water through his faith in Christ, but when his faith wavered, he sank. We see the same pattern in our own lives, and all the while Jesus reassured, "Be of good cheer; it is I; be not afraid."

9. Matthew 11 - Jesus' Blessing of Peace

Jesus said many things about how to find peace here on earth, and one of the most touching is recorded in Matthew chapter 11. In part, Christ says, "Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest."

10. Luke 23 - The Atonement

Jesus atoned for all people so that he could understand and bear all of our burdens. It is a privilege, bought with the blood of Christ, that we have hope in the eternities regardless of our trials today. As we read in John 3:16, "For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life."

The words of the Bible give us comfort, strength and the eternal perspective we need to go on when life's trials get us down. Studying the Bible helps us turn our grief, our frustration and our sadness over to Christ, who is ready and waiting to carry the burden for us.

Politics10 Soldiers Die In Battle As Army Repels Boko Haram From Ashaka Town by clara472(op): 9:06pm On Dec 07, 2014
THE Nigerian Military, yesterday, put up a brave fight against hundreds of Boko Haram terrorists who attacked the dynamite-manufacturing town of Ashaka in Gombe State.

Their plan was to overrun the town. After several hours of fighting, the Nigerian Army lost 10 soldiers while over 70 Boko Haram terrorists were killed with scores of them sustaining serious gunshot injuries - most of the terrorists fled the town. While running away from the town, the terrorists carried most of their dead members in three trucks.

Confirming the development in the Defence Headquarters twitter handle, Director of Defence Information, Major General Chris Olukolade, noted that the terrorists invaded the town in a convoy of 30 vehicles and many motorcycles.

His words: "Terrorists fleeing Ashaka on Thursday managed to retrieve three truckloads full of their dead members following the defeat and heavy casualty they suffered after a fierce battle with troops in the area.

"The terrorists, who had come in large number with heavy equipment and convoy of over 30 vehicles and a number of motor cycles, were on a mission to take control of Ashaka town, after they had operated in Bajoga and environs in Gombe State.

"Troops who got wind of their intention to overrun other towns and pursued the terrorists while some also laid ambush for them. The terrorists were forced to abandon the mission when the troops proved unyielding. Most of the vehicles and equipment used by the terrorists for their mission were destroyed before they chose to flee the location.

"Over 10 soldiers however died in the battle while those who were wounded are being treated in military hospitals.

About a month ago, suspected Boko Haram terrorists attacked the Ashaka Cement Company where they made away with a truck load of dynamites used for manufacturing Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDS) and since then, several bomb attacks in Kano, Maduguri, Yobe, Adamawa and Bauchi, etc have been carried out with female suicide bombers. The military succeeded in thwarting some of the suicide bombing plots.

Military's discipline reason Nigeria hasn't exploded -Fashola

Meanwhile, Lagos State Governor, Babatunde Fashola (SAN), has commended the military for its discipline and dedication to duty, which he said have kept Nigeria from imploding. Speaking at the formal decoration of two officers of the Nigerian Army Ordnance Corp, NAOC, recently promoted by the Army High Command from the rank of colonel to brigadier-general, Fashola said the resilience and continuous loyalty of the Army to the democratic principle were reasons the country has not exploded. Represented by Dr. Adeyemi Idowu, the governor said Nigerian Army had moved beyond what it was in the colonial era and that they were now a more formidable institution. The two Nigerian Army Ordnance Corp officers were Brigadier-General Martin Obiora Enendu, who is Director of Equipment, HQ, NAOC, and Brigadier-General Adamu Mama Dauda. Decorating the officers, Commandant, Nigerian Army Ordnance Corp, HQ, Major-General Adekunle Abdullahi Martins described them as fine officers.

PoliticsPDP Bot Secretary Urges Tukur To Apologise To Party, President by clara472(op): 12:41pm On Dec 07, 2014
Following the suspension of the immediate past chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Alhaji Bamanga Tukur, the secretary of the party’s Board of Trustees, Senator Walid Jubrin, has advised him to swallow his pride and apologise to the party.

This followed his suspension by the leadership of the ruling party. Tukur, it is believed, is behind the case instituted against the current chairman, Adamu Mu’azu. Even though a federal highcourt dismissed his prayers last Tuesday. The decision has been appealed.

Speaking on the issue, however, Senator Jubrin said it was unfortunate that Tukur was playing hide and seek with the party, knowing that his action violated the party’s constitution.

“It is time Tukur swallowed his pride and apologise to the party and, indeed, Mr President. At a time when the party was gearing for elections, it is absurd that it’s past chairman should be seen to be dragging the party into disrepute.

“We should not be changing party chairmen like clothes everytime. I expected that Tukur would for the sake of our party, join hands and ensure that our party was successful at next year’s election than this unnecessary distraction the suit is causing,” Walid stated.

PoliticsJonathan’s Reelection Will Worsen Nigeria’s Problems -okorocha by clara472(op): 3:34pm On Dec 06, 2014
Governor Rochas Okorocha of Imo State, has once again reaffirmed his stand that President Goodluck Jonathan does not deserve another term in office.

Okorocha, who is a presidential aspirant on the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC), said Boko Haram insurgency would not end if President Goodluck Jonathan was reelected in 2015.
The governor made this assertion in Akure, the Ondo State capital, during a visit to the state’s secretariat of the APC with his team to woo delegates ahead of the party’s primaries slated for December 10 in Lagos.

The governor said President Jonathan was incapable of handling the Boko Haram insurgency, saying that the Islamist group’s threat was becoming worse than the Nigerian civil war.

An embittered Okorocha further accused officials of the Jonathan administration of using the anti-insurgency campaign as a “commercial business like buying and selling.”

“If President Jonathan wins the forthcoming election, Boko Haram would never stop and if PDP has what it takes to stop this carnage they would have done it a long time ago,” the governor said.

Speaking further, Governor Okorocha also flayed the ruling PDP-led government over its failure to oust the Boko Haram sect, which had claimed more than 30,000 lives.

He added that the country was going through hard times as a result of poverty, greed, injustice and impunity championed by Jonathan’s administration.

He said Nigeria was already in a state of war and that things might become worse in 2015 if Mr. Jonathan emerged as the president.

“I think it’s a wrong perception for people to be talking that the next president must come from the north or the south and should be a Muslim or Christian. This has further divided us and made the country a polarized nation,” said Governor Okorocha.

He said Nigeria needed a dynamic leader with unbeatable foresight and vision, adding that he was ready to defeat President Goodluck Jonathan if given the party’s ticket.

He urged Nigerians to give APC a chance to govern the country.

“If you put Jonathan and me together in the election, I will defeat him in all the states of the federation,” he said.

“If the APC should lose the forthcoming election, there will never be a strong opposition again in the history of Nigeria and APC will die the way ANPP died because the party is the last hope of opposition in the country. And if we didn’t succeed now then forget about it in the history of the country,” Okorocha added.

PoliticsPost Election Violence: Hold Amaechi, APC Responsible – Group by clara472(op): 6:55pm On Dec 05, 2014
A group, under the auspices of Elite Youths Support and Development Initiative (EYSDI) has called on Nigerians and the world at large to hold Governor Rotimi Amaechi of Rivers State and the All Progressives Congress (APC) responsible for any post 2015 election violence in Nigeria.

EYSDI made the call in a statement signed by the duo of Barristers Tokunbo Olu and Smart Fred, president and secretary respectively and issued to journalists in Abuja on Thursday.
According to the group, the call became necessary following statements made by both Governor Amaechi and the APC national chairman, Odigie Oyegun, during the APC salvation rally in Abuja, where Governor Amaechi was alleged to have said “What is the essence of going to court when the Federal Government doesn’t obey the law? That’s why the APC say we won’t go to the court any longer. If you rig us out, we would rig ourselves in; we will form our own government. We have met on that and we have agreed on that. We will install our own government and there would be two governments.”

Similarly, the group further alleged, at the party mega rally for the re-election of its governorship candidate in Osun at the Osogbo Township Stadium in Osogbo, the APC National Chairman, Chief John Odigie-Oyegun said, “the battle line has already been drawn. The APC will no longer accept any stolen mandate. We shall not recognize any government that emerges through rigging in February 2015.”

“The APC will set up a new government, which will be a peoples government if the PDP rigs the 2015 Presidential election”.

Part of the statement issued by EYSDI reads:

“Those who doubt Governor Amaechi’s proclivity for actions that could threaten peace should recall the recent threat by Amaechi to lawyers in Port Harcourt to the effect that he would provide black suits to thugs disguised as lawyers to beat up lawyers if they dared to go to the street to protest the long closure of the courts in Port Harcourt.

“Equally significant is that the APC leaders’ statements were made after the salvation rally the main highlight of which was a most unruly blockade of the entrance of the police head quarters for hours.

“Nigerians recall with sadness that before the 2011 elections, certain persons close to the APC leadership had similarly threatened to make the country ungovernable and we are all witnesses of the level of violence that ensued. Indeed, only a few are able to distinguish between the violence that followed these threats and the Boko Haram insurgency.

“With such sense of Déjà vu, we urge all Nigerians to hold Amaechi who had already stated his desire to run and relocate abroad after the election, where he claimed several embassies have already given him forms for grant of residency in their respective countries and his APC counterparts responsible for any possible future violence incited by their statements”.

PoliticsBoko Haram Using German War Strategy – Expert by clara472(op): 9:12am On Dec 03, 2014
Source: .com.ng

Boko Haram has been employing WWII German war strategy to fight the Nigerian Army, a security expert, Dr. Ona Ekhomu, has revealed

He advised the country’s leaders to plan a counter strategy to be able to win the war against the insurgents.

Ekhomu said this while reacting to the recent attack on Damaturu by the insurgents, a statement said on Tuesday.
He said, “Nigerian political leaders should beware of a new terrorist threat from Boko Haram which is the blitzkrieg strategy. This new terrorist tactic involves the rapid invasion of a state, seizure of the territory and destruction of lives and property in the captured areas.

“The Boko Haram strategy is modeled after the invasion method utilised by the German Army in invading France and Russia during the Second World War. Blitzkrieg means ‘lightning war’ and it is the use of incredible speed, coordination and movement to get large mobile forces through weak points in the enemy’s defenses in order to capture a territory.”

He added that blitzkrieg was employed in the capture of Mubi, Hong, Michika, Madagali and other towns and local government areas in Adamawa and Borno states.

The security expert said, “It does not matter if the terrorists can’t hold on to the territory. To them, it is a great moral and military victory. They also often rename the cities as they did to Gwoza and Mubi.”

Ekhomu, who is the first chartered security professional in Nigeria, maintained that the attempt by Boko Haram to capture Damaturu was to show its military prowess to the world.

He said the terrorists would have destroyed a lot of government infrastructure such as the government house and other important vital assets in Damaturu, if their plan had succeeded.

He lauded the military for repelling the terrorists, adding that it was important for members of the National Assembly to approve President Goodluck Jonathan’s request of an extention of emergency rule in the North East.

PoliticsWhy Did APC Rule Out Fashola As Vice Presidential Candidate by clara472(op): 9:28am On Dec 01, 2014

Ahead of the December 10 presidential primaries of the All Progressives Congress APC, strong indications have emerged that The Lagos State Governor, Mr. Babatunde Fashola (SAN), has been ruled out as a possible running mate to any presidential candidate of the party.

This was revealed by a highly placed source in the party, who spoke with Punch correspondent on condition of anonymity in Abuja on Sunday, said that Fashola’s religion had ruled him out of the race.
He said since it was almost certain that the party would field a Muslim as its presidential candidate, it would therefore be out of place to field another Muslim as the running mate.

Apart from a former Head of State, Gen. Muhammadu Buhari (retd.), the party also has three other known presidential aspirants.

They are a former Vice President, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar; Governor of Kano State, Rabiu Kwakwanso; and a newspaper publisher, Mr. Sam Nda-Isaiah.

Out of them, only Nda-Isaiah is a Christian.

The source said that though Fashola remained the best candidate for the position, he however regretted that the issue of religion would deny the party and the country the chance of fielding the governor.

He said, “You know that the South-West is a base for the APC and it also contributed immensely to its formation. We would have preferred Fashola because of his pedigree in the state. Moreover, of all the APC governors from the zone, he is the only one doing his second term.

“But this issue of religion is the problem. Apart from this, other APC governors from the zone are also Muslims. You may need to recall that the enemies of our party tried in vain before to label the party a Muslim party.

“Even though they have failed, we may also need to be guided by the words of advice from former President Olusegun Obasanjo against any party fielding same religion ticket. This is what is hampering us concerning Fashola, whose performance and competence cannot be queried.”

The source said that even though the national leadership of the party was aware that the people of the “South-West are not religious but we are dealing with a larger society now. So, we must be careful.”
