Chemicals in scented products like deodorant, shampoo, and cologne have been linked to a wide range of health risks. The scariest part? We don’t know just how many there are

From shampoo to soap to deodorant to hair wax, most products these days are heavily scented.

In fact, you may be piling on half a dozen or more fragranced grooming products when you get ready for work (and that’s not even counting actual fragranced products like cologne).

Even your detergent, dryer sheets, air freshener, and countertop cleaner are likely scented.

That’s a problem, according to some experts who are sounding the alarm about the potential health risks associated with the chemicals.

What kinds of health risks? Breathing difficulties, asthma attacks, migraine headaches, dizziness, rashes, congestion, seizures, nausea, and a range of other physical problems, says Anne Steinemann, Ph.D., a professor of civil engineering at Australia’s University of Melbourne who has conducted research on long-term exposure to fragranced consumer products. In a 2017 study, Steinemann even found that 33% of Australians reported experiencing migraines and asthma attacks after exposure to fragranced products like air fresheners and cleaning supplies.

While this might sound extreme, Steinemann is far from the only researcher to express concern about chemicasls in fragranced products. A handful of studies have found that phthalates, a class of chemicals that are often used in scented soaps and shampoos, can also have some harrowing effects, says Heather Patisaul, Ph.D., a professor of biological sciences at North Carolina State University who runs a lab studying the biological effects of consumer chemicals.

These compounds have been linked to abnormalities of male reproductive system development and are suspected of having neuro-developmental effects,” she says.

Patisaul says that aside from phthalates, other fragrance chemicals have been shown to block testosterone activity, which could lead to loss of energy, erectile dysfunction, or problems building or maintaining muscle (to name just a few concerns associated with low testosterone).


What’s even more frightening is that in 2014, the U.S. National Toxicology Program issued a report about styrene, a chemical found in a range of consumer goods, including fragranced personal care and household products. The NTP said that it found compelling evidence that styrene can cause cancer in humans. Research in animals has linked styrene to lung, breast, stomach, and liver cancers.

Styrene is important to know about, but there are potentially hundreds of other fragrance chemicals that may be carcinogenic, says Robin Dodson, Sc.D., a research scientist at the nonprofit environmental research organization the Silent Spring Institute. We don’t know about the others, because they haven’t been tested.

While most of us assume the products we buy at our local CVS or Walmart have been rigorously tested to ensure their safety, the truth is that’s not quite the case. The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) does not require cosmetic manufacturers to prove in advance that all of their ingredients are safe. Instead, there must be proof that an ingredient causes harm for a product to be yanked from the shelves.

The FDA and EPA are not testing these products for safety, says Dodson.

For its part, the FDA addresses the potential health risks of chemicals like phthalates on its website, stating that after conducting multiple studies and reviewing the available data, the agency was unable to find “a sound, scientific basis to support taking regulatory action against cosmetics containing phthalates. (Men’s Health has reached out to the FDA, and we will update if we hear back.)

To make matters worse, companies that produce scented products are not even required to disclose all of the ingredients they use to begin with. That’s in part due to a loophole in the Fair Packaging and Labeling Act, which states that companies do not have to reveal an ingredient if it qualifies as a “trade secret.”

That explains why, if you look at the list of ingredients on your canister of hair product or bottle of countertop cleaner, you might see a long list of multisyllabic chemicals, along with the word fragrance or parfum. That single, seemingly benign word could be a stand-in for dozens or even hundreds of chemicals, Patisaul says.

Literally thousands of chemicals can be described under the generic term fragrance, but for each scented product you buy, it is impossible to know what chemicals are included, Patisaul says.

That said, there are ways to find out what ingredients are being used in your scented products. In 2010, following a campaign by consumer watchdogs, a trade group known as the International Fragrance Association started publishing a transparency list of all the ingredients that manufacturers could include in their scented products under umbrella terms like fragrance. That list includes roughly 4,000 organic and synthetic compounds some of which, like styrene, have been linked to cancer. The non-profit Environmental Working Group’s Skin Deep Database also provides health and safety info on thousands of consumer chemicals.)

So is there anything else you can do to lower your risks? First, the obvious: you should avoid buying fragranced products whenever possible. Buying unscented products is an effective step for reducing chemical exposures, Patisaul says.

While that includes cologne, you don’t necessarily have to ditch your favorite eau or aftershave. At the very least, you can stop using the dozen other scented products you spread, lather, or rub on your body every day in favor of fragrance-free alternatives. Just use a single scented product be it cologne, aftershave, or hair product.

You should also stop buying scented laundry detergent, air freshener, household cleaner, and other fragranced products that don’t need to smell nice to do their jobs. None of us needs fragranced trash bags, Dodson says. We can all skip those. She also adds that if you see the term unscented on a label, that could just mean that masking agents have been added to cover up any chemical odors. Instead, buy products that are labeled fragrance free.

You should also buy product that prioritize product transparency, Dodson says. If you see every specific ingredient listed on the label, and the manufacturer makes a point of highlighting the lack of phthalates and parabens, that’s a good sign.

Finally, Patisaul says we all need to be pushing lawmakers and government officials to change the way these products are regulated. The overarching problem is that the FDA lacks the authority to require manufacturers to test personal care products for safety, she says.

Ultimately, we simply don’t know a lot about the chemicals being used in our products, let alone the extent of the threat they might pose to our health and safety. But until we get serious about educating ourselves and pushing for more transparency from manufacturers, nothing will change.

It was a sad day for Brazil as the country’s 200-year-old history museum was gutted by fire in spite efforts by firefighters to douse the massive flames.

Reports say the National Museum also known as Rio Museu Nacional, located in Rio de Janeiro, caught fire Sunday night after the building had closed for the day, according to O Globo.

It was not immediately clear what sparked the fire; the museum reportedly had infrastructure problems in recent years.

Sgt. Moises Torres, of the state’s firefighting headquarters, said it wasn’t known if anyone was injured in the blaze.

“Two hundred years of work, investigation and knowledge have been lost,” President Michel Temer tweeted.

The museum is Brazil’s oldest. Sérgio Sá Leitão, the country’s culture minister, told the newsmen how tragic it was to see the museum in flames, and, according to a translation of his remarks, said the fire “could certainly have been avoided.”

The museum holds thousands of items related to the history of Brazil and other countries, according to its website, and is part of the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro.

Many of its collections came from members of Brazil’s royal family, officials said.

3. Be reasonable

It’s one thing for a cheat to apologise emotionally after being caught or after a confession; it is another thing to be sincere about turning a new leaf.

Be open about giving them a chance but also be reasonable. If there ever was an exception to the rule of never taking breaks from your relationship, this is it.

4. You need a support system

Don’t try to do it alone. There is a very thin line between doing the right thing here and making a huge mistake.

You could either wrongly let a sincere partner go because of a mistake they genuinely regret or take back a chronic cheat who would do it again.

You need an extra pair of eyes to give a different perspective.

After hearing a radio program describe the labor-intensive work of forest pathologists — basically, tree doctors — Maksim Mikhailov had an idea: what if a robot helped collect their data?

Mikhailov is a 16-year-old student at ITMO University, the renowned science and technology institution in St. Petersburg, Russia. As a member of the school’s Youth Robotics Lab, he was perfectly positioned to bring his idea to life. With a full team working on the the project, the robot won the gold medal at last year’s World Robot Olympiad; it can record tree locations within a forest, identify their species, measure the widths of their trunks, and even identify if a tree is healthy or not.

Its name is Forester, and most of its job is to explore forests and hit trees with its mallet. It’s a robotic adaptation of a technique that human tree experts often use, called “sounding,” to help their appraisal of a tree’s health.

“The robot hits a tree and its microphone records the sound,” Mikhailov explained. “Since sick trees have cavities or low wood density in their trunk, they make a sound with a lower overall frequency than that of a healthy tree.” The robot makes use of an algorithm that analyzes the recorded sound to determine if it came from a healthy tree.

Forester also takes a photograph of the tree and feeds the image to a neural network, identifying 12 different species of trees with accuracy better than 90 percent.

This student invention is “a great idea,” says Lee Dean, lead arborist at Cornell University, simultaneously cautioning that “trees are living, dynamic systems.” He identifies the robot as a tool for the human arborist, not an automated solution that will render their work useless. “Tree risk assessment is qualifiable, not quantifiable. This can give indicators about a tree’s health, but can’t make the diagnosis.”

This jibes with Mikhailov’s own perception of his team’s creation. “While the robot can collect data about the trees, it cannot analyze that data to decide what needs to be done in order to preserve forests,” he said. That task falls to the human experts, whose jobs are perhaps made simpler by a data-collecting robot.

An arborist’s work appears to be safe from automation — at least, for now.

Gambian Ghana-based actress, Princess Shyngle has made a shocking revelation that Ghanaian footballer Michael Essien cheated on his wife, Akosua Puni Essien with her for a period of 1 year before she found out he was married.

A suspected thief was beaten to pulp by enraged residents after he was caught breaking into a compound in Ubaha, Okigwe in the early hours of today.

A 19-year-old teenager has been found guilty of raping and murdering a 95-year-old senior citizen in Uitenhage at the Port Elizabeth High Court on Friday.

Phumzile Mabope’s trial brought horrific details of his murder and rape of Maria Vermaak to light.

According to an account, Mabope gave of his crimes after making a plea deal with the state, he jumped over a brick wall in February last year with the intension of stealing avocados, finding the home to be open.

While Mabope was going through 95-year-old Maria Vermaak’s belongings, she returned home. Mabope admits to strangling her.

He claims to have returned later with the intention of having “sex with a corpse,” as he thought Vermaak was dead.

However, Jude Dayalin Chetty disputed Mabope’s account, finding that the victim was clearly alive when assaulted by Mabope and saying that he does not believe the perpetrator’s claims.

“I am satisfied that the deceased was‚ to the knowledge of the accused‚ alive when he raped her and that his denial to the contrary can summarily be rejected,” Chetty said.

Mabope was found guilty of 12 charges, including rape and murder

The Senate President, Bukola Saraki has explained why he paid a visit to former President Olusegun Obasanjo.
Saraki arrived Obasanjo’s house around 5:30pm on Monday, August 13, 2018, according to Punch.

The Senate President has been under fire from the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) since he moved to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

The ruling party is demanding that Saraki resigns as Senate President, and rumours of plots to impeach him have been making rounds in the media.

The Senate President’s meeting with the former President is coming days after he met with former Head of State, Ibrahim Babangida.

Why Saraki visited Obasanjo

According to Punch, Saraki said he was in Ogun state to see OBJ because he missed the inauguration of the Presidential library.

The former President launched the library when he turned 80 in March 2017, in Abeokuta, Ogun state.

Saraki said “You know, I missed the official opening of the library and that is why I have decided to come and see the place and, honestly, it is beautiful.
“We are very proud of what he has done here.”

Sources also say the meeting could be connected to the current crisis in the National Assembly.

In recent times, former President Olusegun Obasanjo has openly condemned President Buhari and his administration.
Obasanjo, in several letters, criticised the President’s body language regarding the killings by Fulani herdsmen and his handling of the Nigerian economy.

The former President at one time, described Buhari as an ignorant President.

There are also unconfirmed reports that Obasanjo is leading a group of former Generals on a campaign to ensure that President Buhari is not re-elected in 2019.
