Politics / APGA Favours Buhari To Emerge As President by closearms(m): 7:02am On Jan 05, 2015 |
Maj-Gen. Mohammadu Buhari (retd.) The All Progressive Grand Alliance says it cannot throw its weight behind President Goodluck Jonathan as it is very likely that the candidate of the All progressives Congress, Maj.-Gen. Muhammadu Buhari (retd.), will emerge the winner of the presidential election next month. The Chairman of the Lagos State chapter of APGA, Mr. Campbell Umeh-Nzekwe, who is also a special adviser to the national chairman of the party, said this during an interview with our correspondent, on Sunday. Umeh-Nzekwe said Jonathan’s problem was compounded by the fact that the motion to adopt him as the consensus candidate of the Igbo for the 2015 presidential election failed at the Ime-Obi (inner caucus) meeting of the Ohanaeze Ndigbo, on Saturday, in Enugu. He added that the sermon of renowned Enugu- based Catholic priest, Rev. Fr. Ejike Mbaka, that Jonathan had failed and should step down seemed to have sent shockwaves across the South-East. He said the party was sure that Jonathan would not win votes in the North. He said, “The game has changed. As it is, Jonathan has no chance of winning. Buhari seems to have taken over. The PDP has collapsed in the North if you care to know. All those who are running to Aso Rock and making promises to the President are just deceiving him.” When asked if APGA would be supporting Buhari next month, Umeh-Nzekwe said he could not say for sure. He said, “Jonathan is a sitting President with incumbency factor in his favour but Buhari has the masses and a cult following in the North. In 2011, Buhari won 12 million votes in the North with his rag-tag party, the Congress for Progressive Change, without a single governor or senator to campaign for him. “Today, his party, the APC, has 14 governors, 43 senators and 176 Reps as well as 625 House of Assembly members. Also, the APC has dominant control of the North-West with a total number of 18.4 million voters and North-East with 10.2 million while South-West has 13.4 million voters “ The PDP has dominant control of the North- Central and Abuja with 10.4 million voters while the South-South has 8.5 million and South-East has 7.2 million votes. “However, no zone has achieved 50 per cent of votes cast but northern voters are more committed and trustworthy than those in the South. “Also, look at Jonathan’s campaign team. He has Col. Ahmadu Ali (retd.) as his Director General and Peter Obi as the deputy while Buhari has Governor Rotimi Amaechi and Senator Olorunnimbe Mamora as director general and deputy respectively. It is time for Ndi Igbo to review their strategy.” www.punchng.com/politics/apga-favours-buhari-to-emerge-as-president/ |

Politics / Step Down For Buhari, Catholic Priest Tellsjonathan by closearms(m): 6:13am On Jan 03, 2015 |
Step down for Buhari, Catholic priest tells Jonathan JANUARY 3, 2015 BY IHUOMA CHIEDOZIE AND ENIOLA AKINKUOTU President Goodluck Jonathan | credits: File copy Renowned Catholic Priest, Rev. Fr. Ejike Mbaka, has urged President Goodluck Jonathan to abandon his re-election bid so that the All Progressives Congress candidate, Maj.Gen Muhammadu Buhari (retd.) can emerge the winner of the presidential election next month. Mbaka, who heads the popular Catholic Adoration Centre in Enugu, said this in his New Year sermon titled “From Good luck to Bad luck,” while addressing thousands of parishioners on Thursday. He urged all well-meaning Nigerians to vote for Buhari on February 14. According to the cleric, Jonathan has disappointed Nigerians and cannot deliver the dividends of democracy to the people. Mbaka subsequently knelt down in front of the altar, cried and asked God to give Nigeria a good leader and not Jonathan. He used the opportunity to beg Nigerians to vote wisely in the forthcoming elections. He said, “I love President Goodluck Jonathan and I used to be his ardent fan, but I want good for my people and that’s why I want Nigerians to vote out Goodluck Jonathan and vote General Muhammad Buhari. I don’t care if Buhari is a Muslim and from the North; all I care about is that Buhari can save Nigeria.” Ironically, Mbaka had recently endorsed Jonathan’s re-election. It was learnt that the Deputy Senate President, Ike Ekweremadu, had taken Jonathan’s wife, Patience, to Mbaka, where the cleric said he would pray for Jonathan’s victory. However, after prayers, Mbaka said the sign he received from God was that Jonathan was not fit to rule the nation anymore. Mbaka further explained that one of the reasons Jonathan is no longer fit to rule Nigeria for the next four years was the high level of insecurity which the President had failed to address as well as corruption in the country. He said it was unfortunate that the over 200 Chibok girls who were abducted by terrorists over 200 days ago had not been rescued despite series of promises made by Jonathan. He further urged the Federal Government to account for the missing $20bn and stop insurgency in the country. Mbaka maintained that Buhari could not Islamise Nigeria as being rumoured in some circles. He said he had never met the APC candidate but urged Nigerians not to forget that Buhari fought corruption to a standstill during his administration between December 1983 and August 1985. http://www.punchng.com/news/step-down-for-buhari-catholic-priest-tells-jonathan/ |

Nairaland / General / 2 Germans Shot Dead In Abuja by closearms(m): 10:20am On Jan 01, 2015 |
2 Germans Shot Dead In Abuja — Jan 1, 2015 | 2 Comments Two German engineers were last Saturday reportedly shot dead by unknown gunmen in Abuja, the capital city of Nigeria. According to reports from the German Foreign Office, the two engineers were shot dead while making a private outing on a motorbike. According to a northern German newspaper, The Ostsee Zeitung, the two men, aged 34 and about 20, worked for Julius Berger Plc, a construction company,. Both originated from Germany’s northeastern state of Mecklenburg-West Pomerania, the newspaper further said. The Foreign Office provided no further details, saying the German embassy in Abuja was seeking clarification in close contact with Nigerian authorities. However, when contacted, a source at the German embassy in Abuja said he would send the phone number and email address of the foreign office in Germany to LEADERSHIP tomorrow for further clarification. When contacted, the spokesman of Nigeria’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Mr Ahmadu Ogbole Ode, said he had travelled out of the capital city for the yuletide. A source at Julius Berger’s head office in Abuja told Deutsche Welle that ‘two expatriate Germans’ were killed last Saturday while riding a motorcycle in Abuja. Gerd Scharmberg, the mayor of the 34-year-old’s hometown of Born – on the Mecklenburg peninsula of Darß – said local residents were shocked by the news from Nigeria. “There is enormous sense of commiseration here locally,” he said, adding that the deceased had visited Born only eight weeks ago. LEADERSHIP recalls that in October 2014, gunmen shot dead a German construction expert in Nigeria’s southwestern state of Ogun while Julius Berger employees were being driven to work. A second German, a sub-contractor to Julius Berger, was abducted by the gunmen and released a week later. Julius Berger Nigeria Plc has operated in Nigeria since 1965, working mainly on infrastructure projects, and has a staff of 18,000 personnel. Its German branch, Julius Berger International (JBI) , is based in Wiesbaden and has 600 employees assigned in Nigeria. |
Politics / APC Raises Alarm Over Fg’s Plans To Clampdownon Opposition by closearms(m): 3:06pm On Dec 31, 2014 |
The All Progressives Congress (APC) has raised the alarm over the plan by the Federal Government to use the security agencies, especially the DSS and the Police, to harass and intimidate the opposition with a view to decapitating it ahead of the 2015 elections. In a statement, Wednesday , by its National Publicity Secretary, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, the party said the torrent of threats being issued recently by the Minister of Police Affairs and the DSS, over alleged inflammatory statements by opposition leaders, is nothing but a thinly-veiled attempt at cowing the opposition and destabilizing its ranks. It said the strategy includes the ‘invitation’ of key opposition figures for questioning by the DSS, starting with the APC National Publicity Secretary, to be followed by arrests and detention of such figures. APC said the impending clampdown is the PDP- led Federal Government’s answer to the soaring profile of the opposition ahead of the polls, and called on local and international observers of the elections to keep a close eye on the unsavoury developments, which constitute a clear and present danger to the success of the elections. ”The Minister of Police Affairs said publicly that he has already directed the Inspector-General of Police as well as the DSS to arrest anyone who makes inflammatory statements ahead of the 2015 elections, and then went ahead to castigate the APC, thus exposing the real reason for his directive. Police IG Sulaiman Abba ”The Minister had barely issued his orders when the DSS, which has unabashedly become a megaphone of the ruling PDP, fired its own warning, directed pointedly at ”a serving governor calling on men of the armed forces to rise up in protest against constituted authority,” when nothing of such happened. ”If the Minister and indeed the security agencies were carrying out their duties as an official/agents of state rather than partisans, they would have realized that no one is more guilty of making inflammatory and even treasonable statements than the supporters of the President and members of the PDP. ”Yet, not once has the Minister, and the security agencies under his control, called these people to order. There is no better indication of the mindset of these threats-issuing Minister and the security agencies under his control than their glaring double-standard and vexatious partisanship. This is not how to run the affairs of state,” the party said. It recalled that a series of inflammatory, insulting and downright treasonable comments by supporters of President Goodluck Jonathan and officials of the PDP all went without as much as a whimper from those who are now howling at the opposition for statements that are neither inflammatory nor treasonable. ”A a die-hard supporter of President Goodluck Jonathan once threatened that there will be blood on the streets if the President is not re-elected, without anyone calling him to order. He recently said the President has already won the yet-to-be conducted Feb. 14 presidential election, suggesting that the election will be a mere formality. No one called him to order. ”Another supporter of the President, Chief Edwin Clark, said if the opposition had its way, it would poison President Jonathan just to take power. The Minister of Police Affairs and the security agencies under his control snored the comment away. ”PDP National Secretary Wale Oladipo called the presidential candidate of the APC, Gen. Muhammadu Buhari, a ‘semi-literate jackboot’, PDP National Publicity Secretary Olisa Metuh heaped abuses on APC leaders in an ill-tempered statement arising from a disoriented PDP in the aftermath of the hugely-successful APC national convention while a spokesman for the President called Gen. Buhari names for being a ‘poor’ man, yet this Minister and his agencies did not see anything inflammatory in all these statements, all because they came from members and supporters of the ruling party. ”We know that Nigerians as well as the international community are watching closely and documenting these developments. It is important to do so if they are to make informed comments on the outcome of the forthcoming polls. http://www.vanguardngr.com/2014/12/apc-raises-alarm-fgs-plans-clampdown-opposition/ |
