Women like you who delude themselves that heterosexual men make better friends because of the petty benefits you get from such dynamics would learn. It might take time, but you all would learn and confess with your mouths.
All those “I don’t like having female friends” set of clowns.

Having a great community of longterm female friends is life enriching. In fact it’s comparable to having a good marriage.

If individuals can be racist and those individuals hold positions of authority to police, judge/sentence, employ, promote or treat black people, do we expect them to magically put aside their racism in the process of doing those jobs?

Does it not hold to reason then that a racist police officer will focus more on finding black offenders? That a racist judge will give maximum sentences to black convicts? And a racist boss will employ/promote less black people?

Hence the documented and well researched evidence showing that black people get arrested more often, sentenced harsher, paid less and mistreated in healthcare than their white counterparts. Hence it’s called systemic racism.

No wonder republicans are not known as the brightest individuals in America.

It's such a myopic view of the world esp. when your concern is not the current threats in your own country but so some far away threat that may one day engulf you, if you survive the fire that you're already engulfed in.

These Nigerian churches.
That’s why I don’t like to be that harsh when I’m responding to people who I know where their mindset comes from. It’s exactly like talking to a cousin or friend. Are you going to blame them when you know exactly the root of the issue?

I was watching a tiktok video of some youths swarming a dude in a nice ish car in Lagos because they were hungry and wanted some money. The glaring wealth inequality was dystopian to behold.

We leave those and worry about two men married to each other thousands of miles across oceans and mountains.

Conservative propaganda finish work for our body sha. The hold they have on our Nigerian society is going nowhere in this generation.

And funny thing is that the situation we are all running away from in third world countries is what conservatives want to bring back. A world where rich men are kings. Where asking employers to eliminate poverty by paying livable wages is a communist leftist ideology that is going to “ruin” the world.

I wish they could take their eyes off gay people for 5 minutes and see how much of their own oppression they’re propping up.

What is this "dangerous liberalism" you speak of?
E no go pass gay people. Ever since Nigerian Christians learned that LGBTQ folks have human rights in America, they have not been the same. That’s the burning issue that’s happening in America they think will creep into their own country and somehow ruin it.

And there’s literally nothing you can tell them.

They could be burning humans alive in the streets on allegations of theft. There could be incessant kidnappings and killings of innocent people due to greed. Little kids who are being abused in the name of house maids are getting injured and killed daily.

The average person may never be able to get a leg up unless they bribe and sleep with everyone on the way who has the power to help them advance. Even for basic things like obtaining your certificate from the school you graduated from, you have to bribe someone at the office.

But as long as the Nigerian LGBTQ citizens can be jailed for 14 years, the rest of the people consider the Nigerian society more morally intact than America.

Don’t even ask me how. I cannot explain 🫠

The difference is that Ishi is ignorant.
I wouldn’t be so hard on her. It takes a growth mindset to admit that something might be more nuanced than one initially thought it was, which she has displayed. Kudos to her. To me that’s bigger than suddenly agreeing with someone you previously disagreed with. In fact a sudden change of mind is more suspicious IMO because it could indicate that the person hasn’t taken time to dissect and reflect on the conversations.

Also, upbringing and social conditioning cannot be changed by two-three pages of Nairaland interactions. It could take years but we are laying the foundations now.

Ishi will move to America someday (if she desires that) and she will either realize “oh this is what they were talking about”, or her kids will make her realize that as they grow and socialize within the system.

This. And it was not just black Wall Street.

There are so many examples of successful black communities that got destroyed by Caucasians as soon as they started to become self sufficient and independent of white wealth/ white help.

https://www.zinnedproject.org/collection/massacres-white-supremacist/

People often tell black Americans to build their own, to stop waiting for white Americans to solve their problems. But whenever they do, they get crushed for it.

Then, they’re are back to relying on white systems who do not give them same opportunities for businesses, school system equality, environment equality, healthcare equality etc.

It’s a deeper issue than individual black people going to school and getting a good job afterwards. That is great but it only goes so far.

Yes we are in 2026 and it isn’t likely for a mob to burn a black community today, but the descendants of those perpetrators still exist and they’re taught the same hate their fathers and grandfathers had. They express it in how they police black communities. How they pass judgement on black offenders. How they treat black patients in the hospital etc.

That’s why it’s risky and shows lack of self preservation to think those mindsets are a thing of the past.

IjeBos:
My distinction is what originated what.
The belief that African Americans were inherently primal/evil/bad/less than is what originated Western slavery.
It wasn't a "life of crime" that led people to dehumanize them, it was a belief in white superiority.
In fact, when African Americans set up successful communities, post-civil rights movement, they were destroyed by Caucasians.

We are still saying the same thing. This sentiment was why the blacks were discriminated against, giving rise to unequal opportunities that forced many of them into a life of crime. There are better opportunities now in a more conducive environment, but still yet the fall out still remains
What fallout?

Black women are some of the most educated demographic per capita out of all ethnicities in America.
Yet they get paid less than their counterparts of similar qualifications. Due to….wait for it….✨ racism✨

Black Americans do not commit more crimes that other groups. Anyone who tells you otherwise is a liar. And any “skewedness” in statistics is because of negative racial profiling by law enforcement like we have already established. If you ignore the crimes of one community and focus on another, it makes sense that you will find more criminals among the group you’re focused on.

Black people do not kill each other more than white people do. They do not do as much or more drugs than any other demographic.

The fallout only exists in biased conservative media outlets. Stop accepting information from them. It doesn’t matter how good black people become, you will never hear anything good about them from racist people.

You have to let go of the notion that black people are worse than any other group in America.

I totally get where she’s coming from and I’m hoping to penetrate that shield. I grew up in Nigeria and I know our understanding of liberalism is heavily influenced by white nationalist funded propaganda.

To the Nigerian conservatives, the idea of liberalism is a world where people living their lives in any way that doesn’t conform to Christian ideals is the worst thing that can happen.

They sometimes have the idea of what could make a good society (like limiting gun access and caring for the less fortunate) but they don’t understand that the conservatives they support are the ones standing in the way of such a good society.

One can only try.

Totally agree. We are on the same page on this.

But conservatives would flay you alive for this comment. That’s the problem we have in America. Conservatism won’t let us have safe gun controls. Anyone who suggests gun control is a communist who wants to trample on people’s rights and usher in Armageddon.

The NRA funds hate campaigns that riles up conservative voters into believing that anyone who supports limiting access to dangerous weapons is an enemy of the country.

That’s where some of the culture wars we experience in America come from. From the lies and hate campaigns of special interest groups like the NRA, the white nationalists etc.

I own guns, so, this is not me being a weeping heart liberal like the right wingers love to say we are. But everyone should not have access to guns. California has some of the strictest gun control laws and we happily abide by them. I moved to Europe and put my guns in safe storage because it’s not allowed where I live now and I don’t feel oppressed about having to do that.

A typical conservative feels like them not being able to brandish a weapon at a stranger on their front door is some sort of oppression.

It all boils down to racism and their fear that black people might someday want revenge on them for their past and present transgressions. That’s why they live in fear and make it all our problems. 🙄

Guns don't kill people. People kill people. How you use a weapon is what makes it dangerous. In the UK with very strict gun laws, lunatics and degenerates weaponise vehicles and knives to commit atrocities. In some states any sociopath can walk into a store and buy weapons. That is where America's problems with guns lie.

That, and the dangerous liberalism that causes their society to spray perfume on bullshit.
Could you imagine what a dangerous lunatic with a knife can do when they get their hands on a gun?

Liberalism doesn’t support inordinate ownership of guns. The fact that any sociopath can walk into a store and buy weapons is a result of conservative politics.

Liberalism wants to work towards a society where people in the streets don’t feel like they need to carry guns to protect themselves. A society where people are fed, housed, with livable wages and have healthcare, thereby reducing crime and the dependence on individuals owing firearms.

What you’re saying is like when lord Adam says he supports a govt that takes care of the people, with affordable healthcare, and favorable family policies etc then he turns around and supports the conservatives who have voted against these thing for decades.

It’s giving you guys have a different understanding of the school of thought you support.

Ishilove:
I was born and raised in Nigeria, and after reading everyone's perspectives, I've decided not to comment any further on a matter I don't yet fully understand. I've never experienced racism firsthand, having lived all my life in a largely racially homogeneous society.

The race issue in the US is far more complex than I initially thought, and, as a friend of mine following this thread observed, we homegrown Nigerians don't always do well with issues that are this nuanced.

That said, I do believe racism exists in the US. It may not always be overt, but it often manifests in more subtle ways, particularly through racial profiling. While Dayo may disagree that blacks are victims of racism today, it's important not to ignore the historical context behind that profiling.

Not too long ago, many blacks communities faced systemic barriers that limited opportunities, were the poorest and had to take to crime. Even though the system has changed significantly over time, the legacy of those attitudes has lingered. That lingering bias, whether conscious or subconscious, continues to influence how the whites perceive and treat blacks in the US today.

Cococandy made some very salient observations about how differently white and black kids are treated over the same crimes. You even gave an example about your homeboy's kid, which is quite disgusting really ( how can a full squad pull up over CANDY nitori Olorun??).

And for heaven's sakes, one shooting in a day?? If it were minorities behind these shootings, I can bet every buck I have that there will be a massive crackdown on these minorities.

Goodness, this one pass my power. Let me face the agbero, bandit and olodo uprising in Nigeria. I have a better understanding of those matters than the insanity happening in "God's Own Country".

Right. My daughters have to know that if they get to high school and see other girls stealing makeup at Sephora and laughing about it because they got let go with a warning, it won’t be the same for them. Black kids are expected to be perfect or whatever happens to them is their fault. No room for teenage exuberance.

They will be judged as adults and given the maximum penalty for each offense. Where another kid gets off with no written warning, they will get a citation that takes them before a judge. Even if it eventually gets dismissed, now their names have entered the legal system. They no longer have a clean slate to work with. Another minor infraction might get them locked up whereas other kids of similar behavior get limitless warnings.

They have to understand that they can’t freely do drugs (even marijuana) like other college kids. Cops will see others as kids just being kids but will see the black kids as the next scourge on society and will react in vastly different ways to the same situation just based on the race of the person.

If they can’t recognize these truths about the society they live in and conduct themselves in the safest way possible, then I would have failed as a parent. It is my duty to protect them by not being blasé about such an important issue as racism.

If someone told you there isn't open sexism in Nigeria, would you think that was a left vs right conversation?

I grew up in the US.
There is not one black person I know who will say racism isn't real.
And these are all super successful black people.
In fact my friends with kids have conversations about this with their kids. They tell them though they are privileged, they will be treated differently as their other privileged white friends. So, they warn them about getting in trouble when hanging out with them and how to interact with police esp. when driving.

But, you can also see how he ignored the question about the White Afrikaans and his rather snake like retort about what Black Americans "can legally do".
God, he's fortunate that there are people who actually fight for those rights of his he imagines aren't being infringed.
Foreign Affairs › Re: American Politics Thread: Trump Is The 47th President! by cococandy(f): 4:49pm On Aug 03
It’s not just that. Why is America not shredding white moms to bits for their kids being the main demographic that are slaughtering people in America? They don’t hesitate to judge black moms for being single and not staying in bad marriages.

There’s at least one mass shooting a day in America.

Ishilove could you imagine an America where black teenage boys are going to schools, malls, cinemas and churches and flattening people on a daily basis? Pause for a second and think about what the social commentary would’ve been.

What’s the reason for the whole country overlooking white crimes to focus on black peoples’? We are only just past July. that means we have had more than one mass shooting per day. And they only count shootings where the killer killed more than four people.

This one that happened yesterday in Idaho will probably not count because only 3 people died. But it was also done by a white boy. So that data isn’t even reflected in the actual results.

If black boys historically killed the country at the rate that white kids do, pregnant black moms would be locked up. Their boys would all be born in prison as a rule and have to earn their way out to society based on good behavior .

IjeBos:
No complexity to it at all.
Cococandy's is the correct perspective.
Throughout time there have been black people who have denied racism and pretended it didn't exist. They have various names through history. (Nairaland won't let me post the names)
Raumdeuter is an iteration.

The US is deporting black and brown people while given White Afrikaans expediated paths to the US. There is only one difference between the two groups. In fact the only group to be allowed refugee status to the US, the white Afrikaans.
Ask Raumdeuter to explain the basis of the policy if not racism.

But yea if you go back and forth enough you will eventually find out that he knows racism is a thing in America but he believes talking about it means “playing victim.”

To me that’s where our major differences on the race issue lies. I don’t believe in glossing over real safety issues just to appear macho online or be accepted by the whites in my church or neighborhood as “one of the good blacks”.

As a proper Igbo lady, we have long had a saying that goes “saa anya gi mmiri” basically “wash your eyes or keep your eyes peeled” when dealing with people who won’t hesitate to disenfranchise you. Work hard and smart, don’t be lazy, use the resources available to you but most importantly know where you stand with people so you don’t get shocked when they show you who they are. Playing ignorant doesn’t serve anyone except the people benefiting most from the status quo.

I've seen black people themselves use the term "black on black violence", even in movies.
well that doesn’t necessarily give it any credibility. Many black people have internalized the negative stereotypes put out about black people as we can see. So then repeating those words doesn’t mean it’s true.

Majority of school shooters in America are white boys. There’s no derogatory term coined for it. You’ll never find white people taking on that burden and blaming their race for it. You’ll never find white podcasters mounted up day in and out to blame white moms.

We truly need to be kinder to ourselves and not let the worldview of people who don’t view us kindly be how we describe ourselves.

I've also watched several true crime stories highlighting atrocities committed by people of all races, with special focus on white people.
Yet there’s no social discourse and think pieces on the media about how we can fix the crimes committed by white people. There’s no prying into their family dynamics and labeling the moms as rude, wicked, ungodly etc for raising those murderous men.

Makes me wonder if there are any actual unbiased racial news reportage still left in the US.
True. Controversy sells. So of course the money hungry executives at many opinion-based media companies will milk racial issues. But that doesn’t stop one from looking at the facts and not the language framing the story.

Sometimes the language is deliberate but at other times its a result of unconscious bias that people haven’t unlearned and it seeps into how they interpret things.

But deliberate or not, it’s shaping a society where they’re creating a violent narrative about black people. If we don’t push back it will affect our future generations.

Imagine a cop already believing your teenage boy is a danger to society and he has never even had one single interaction with him to know that for sure. He just assumes it based on the negativity conservatives are putting out there about black people? Could you imagine how an interaction might end up?

The very act of helping white racists further their narrative against black people is a risky move. If one doesn’t suffer directly, they are laying a foundation for it to trickle down and probably affect their next generation.
