A New Jersey woman who voted for Trump says her views on immigration enforcement shifted after her husband spent 108 days in ICE detention.

Abdellatif Hafraoui, 60, was arrested at Newark Liberty International Airport in August while preparing to board a flight with his wife, Sandra. He was detained on an old removal order tied to a missed immigration court date years earlier — one his former attorney allegedly failed to notify him about. That attorney was later convicted in an unrelated immigration fraud case.

Hafraoui, who has lived in the U.S. for nearly four decades and has no criminal record, was held in multiple facilities, including Delaney Hall in Newark, and later transferred out of state. At one point, he said he was placed in solitary confinement after refusing to board a deportation flight while his case was still pending.

A New Jersey immigration judge ultimately overturned the prior deportation order the same day he was scheduled to be removed. Hafraoui was later released on a $15,000 bond but is now required to wear an ankle monitor and attend regular ICE check-ins. He cannot currently return to work.

Sandra Hafraoui said she had supported Trump’s immigration policies, believing enforcement would focus on people with criminal records. “You said you were going after the worst of the worst,” she said. “But instead you ruined our life.”

As of late December, more than 70,000 people were in ICE detention nationwide, according to compiled government data reports.

The couple says they have spent roughly $50,000 in legal fees and hope to resolve his immigration case while remaining in the U.S. For now, they’re staying close to home — and avoiding the airport.

But the price hikes to cover the tariffs will be permanent 🙄
