Economically the west cannot defeat China. US and China have been having trade war and both sides have shown what they are capable of. Russia already had the MIR payment system which covers all Russian Banks, Belarusian banks and Banks within the CIS countries. What Unionpay does, is to enable the card holders of Russian banks to still be able to perform transactions internationally outside of Mastercard and Visa.

Update: Unionpay is accepted in 180 countries of the world.
