A university is to ask students to sign contracts agreeing not to take drugs in its bid to become Britain's first 'drug-free campus'.

Students at Buckingham University are being asked to start a 'revolution' in making drug-taking 'socially unacceptable' in higher education - but will still kick out those who flaunt the rules.

Vice-chancellor Sir Anthony Seldon says it is 'insane' to allow drug-taking in universities to continue 'with half and more students taking them'.

And he warns that education bosses are in danger of 'colluding in the mass consumption of illegal drugs on our premises'.

It comes as a top university was criticised last week for giving detailed advice on how to take drugs 'safely' on its website.

Sheffield University, where a student died last year after taking ecstasy during a club night, offers a step-by-step guide online on taking specific substance through its student union.

It tells students who take drugs with a needle not to 'inject alone' and gives instructions about crushing MDMA and how long to wait before 'considering redosing'.

Writing for the Mail, Sir Anthony said: 'I began to ask myself what kind of moral leadership we university leaders were providing in colluding in the mass consumption of illegal drugs on our premises, with half and more students taking them?

The workers being paid extra salary here, does their effort have any impact on the international price of oil? NO, but the governor rewarded them and no one saw the error in that until the oil money reduced and according to Buhari, PDP government suddenly became a waster, forgetting that there are APC states who wasted their own share on free feeding schemes and handouts.

Nobody is saying oil is in Osun here. The fact that the oil windfall was used to reward workers for no particular reason and that same Osun state is now bankrupt is worth highlighting to me.
Today we have Buhari crying that PDP squandered oil windfall at federal level but APC states did worse at state level and tomorrow's oil price may not be as a good as APC is having it today. Threads like these are needed to help us avoid mistakes of the past.

Honestly, the University of Ibadan should be placed on special funding. The govt is just stupid. With mediocre funding the University of Ibadan eclipsed University of Ghana - A flagship university in Ghana in Times 2019 world ranking.
I know scholars in UI that are as highly ranked as those in Ivy leagues e.g Gureje Oye

If placed on special funding, that alone "can" catapult the school into top 200, but then what is the assurance that the extra funds will be well utilized?
I suggest the govt give extra funds to universities according to their IGR. For example, a school with N2 billion annual IGR should get half another with N4 billion IGR. This should apply to the extra funding alone.
When the uni sit up and improve the govt van then pull the plug and make them accountable.

This is a far cry from ours where the govt attempts to pump in all the money and people who value the certificate issued more than the skills acquired even take advantage of the system to bribe themselves in and enjoy subsidy they have no intention of repaying the society.

This self-funding financial model is the future of university funding all over Africa. Even Nigeria's best ranked uni, CU, that charges around 800k still depends on the owning church for regular injection of funds into the school's finances.

It may interest us to know that even South African university students are currently protesting planned increment in fees. The govt there too is subsidizing folks who aren't ready to repay back with there skills and it is crumbling their standards.

The difference between their lack of funds and ours is the leakages in our system is on a much higher level.
That is why a private uni charging 250k pa will have better equipment, labs, hostels, power, and libraries than a public school being subsidized by more than 250k per student.

In a more organised country most of those things can be backed up by a new copy from schools, waec, hospitals, court etc. Don't loose hope. OP, you may want to rephrase the topic to read "Top 10 Most Subsidized Universities In Nigeria " because govt subsidy to some of those schools on a per student basis is as high as 450k per year.
