Politics / Is The United Nations Of Nigeria The Answer? by cola: 8:46pm On Mar 30, 2012
This suggestion isn't new.
It might be a good one to heal the country OR it might become a veiled road-map to a negotiated and maybe peaceful dissolution. Ethnic (regional) nationalists can have their nations and Nigerian nationalists can have Nigeria, all in the same package, at the same time. A win-win? Or outright nonsense?

http://www.thisdaylive.com/articles/is-the-united-nations-of-nigeria-our-answer-/112366/

Guest Columnist By Azuka Onwuka

Nigeria should disintegrate peacefully. No, a united Nigeria is the answer. A sovereign national conference is the only way. No, sovereign national conference is a euphemism for disintegration. We can't have a sovereign national conference when we already have a national assembly. True federalism is the solution. We want resource control. We are marginalized. We want sharia. Our share of the national cake is too small. We want more states. The cabal is the problem.

Welcome to Nigeria, a land of complexities and inexplicable ironies: a land so rich yet so poor, a land so big yet so small, a land so blessed yet seemingly cursed, a land so loved yet so pillaged. Nigeria is a land where a cacophony of strident voices from the various and varied ethno-religious groups has been getting louder by the day, with the political leaders believing that somehow and someday the voices will die down. But rather than die down, these voices are transforming into angry agitations and physical violence, making Nigeria stagnant (or in actual fact, retrogressive), at a time its contemporaries have dropped the "third-world" tag and donned the "first-world" tag. Only a chronic liar (especially someone who is part of the problem of Nigeria as well as a beneficiary of the unenviable morass into which Nigeria is mired) will deny that Nigeria is under-achieving and moving in the wrong direction, to the despair and frustration of many Nigerians and those who love Nigeria.

There is nothing we can do about it because God's word must come to pass. It was predicted that the Antichrist will come and people will have to worship him to survive.

Christianity is not a religion but a relationship and it is not forceful but convincing. Even if you are not a Christian, you are not forced into being one to get benefits but you are encouraged. But there is a lot of force in Islam which is one of the attributes of the Antichrist.

Look, I know you will not believe but a lot of people will be forced to change to Islam to become beneficiaries and by then, other banks would have been forced to metamorphose into islamic bank or fold up. Them people will have no choice but to join or suffer and die.

This is the coming of the antichrist

pathetic. really pitiable.

And Four Other Things,

Okorocha’s Battalion

Talking about bloated government and bloated wage bill, the list of the newly appointed aides to the Governor of Imo State, Owelle Rochas Okorocha, is one of the most interesting I have ever come across in my life. There are 15 senior special assistants (SSAs) and 32 special assistants (SAs). Some of the titles might interest you: SSA Assets & Liability, SSA Justice & Fairness, SSA NDDC (and another SA for Niger Delta), SA NEPAD, SA Advance Protocol (and another SA for Protocol), SA Investment, SA International Donor Agencies, SA Inter-Party Relations (and another SA for Intra-Party Relations), SA Chieftaincy Affairs, SA Production & Studio Documentary, SA Diaspora, SA Orlu Zonal Security, SA Igbo Affairs, SA Lagos Affairs and—it’s not funny—Chief Comedian of the State! I’m sure Imo is just one of the several states with this ridiculous list of political appointees. No wonder many states say they cannot pay the new minimum wage!

he needs to rise above this level, whatever you think of his performance thus far.

Whatever intolerance is!

Create a product for a group that is not comfortable with the conventional banks. . .

People who are not comfortable with the new product and its terms can and should just stick with the conventional banks and ignore the new product.

How difficult is this to rationalize and tolerate?

Muslims have tolerated the conventional banking and its terms that are not compatible with the injunctions of their faith, now some people can't stand and can't imagine tolerating having an alternative banking platform for this group that has tolerated the conventional model for so long. One would have thought it would be the just thing to allow an alternative platform.

Whatever intolerance is, this is it.

Religion / Re: Can A Christian Do Plastic Surgery For Beauty Enhancement? by cola: 7:34pm On May 15, 2011
We should point out here that cosmetic surgeons do not distinguish between cases of serious need and other cases. Their concern is to earn money and satisfy their customers. Materialists and proponents of “freedom” think that man is free and can do whatever he wants with his body, but this is wrong; the body belongs to Allaah and He can command whatever He wills concerning it. Allaah has told us about the ways in which Iblees (Shaytaan) promised to lead people astray, one of which is (interpretation of the meaning): “‘…and indeed I will order them to change the nature created by Allaah.’…” [al-Nisaa’ 4:119]

There are cosmetic surgical procedures which are haraam and are not considered to be excusable; these are seen as tampering with the creation of Allaah for the sake of beauty. Examples include: breast enlargement or reduction, and procedures aimed at reversing the signs of ageing, such as face-lifts etc. The Islamic view is that these are not permitted, because there is no urgent need or necessity for them; rather, the aim is to change and tamper with the creation of Allaah for reasons of human vanity. This is haraam and the one who does it is cursed because it involves two things mentioned in the hadeeth: pursuit of beauty and changing what Allaah has created.

Added to this is the fact that these operations are aimed at deceit, and may involves the injection of materials extracted from aborted foetuses. These are very serious crimes. Moreover, many of these operations result in ongoing pain and other side effects, as the specialists themselves say. (See Ahkaam al-Jaraahah (Rulings on surgery)by Dr. Muhammad Muhammad al-Mukhtaar al-Shanqeeti).

On the basis of the above, we say to you: if the disfigurement that you are dealing with is incidental and is causing you severe embarrassment as well as putting your husband off, for example, and you are not doing this operation for the purpose of making yourself more beautiful, but only to remove or reduce an accidental disfigurement, then there is nothing wrong with doing it, in sha Allaah. And Allaah knows best.
Religion / Re: Can A Christian Do Plastic Surgery For Beauty Enhancement? by cola: 7:30pm On May 15, 2011
To further understand the difference between what is permitted and what is forbidden, we will quote the words of Imaam al-Nawawi in his commentary on the hadeeth: “Allaah has cursed the women who make tattoos and the women who have this done, the women who pluck facial hair and the women who have this done, and women who widen the gap between their own or others’ teeth for the sake of beauty, changing what Allaah has created.” (Saheeh Muslim, 3966).

Imaam al-Nawawi (may Allaah have mercy on him) said: “The woman who tattoos is one who uses a needle or similar implement to prick the skin of the hand, wrist, lips or other part of a woman’s body until she draws blood, then she puts dye into the wound. It is haraam to do this or have it done by choice. Similarly, plucking or removing hair from the face is also haraam, whether one does it or asks someone else to do it for one, unless a woman has a beard or moustache, in which case it is not haraam to remove it. Widening the gap between the teeth is done by filing between the incisors. This is done by old women to give the appearance of youth and make the teeth look beautiful, because this attractive gap between the teeth is characteristic of young girls. When a woman gets old, her teeth get big and look ugly, so she may file them to make them look more attractive and give the impression that she is younger… It is haraam to do this or have it done by another, because of this hadeeth, and because it involves changing what Allaah has created, and is a form of deception and falsehood. Widening the gap between the teeth is something that is done to make a person look beautiful, which indicates that what is haraam is when this is done in the pursuit of beauty, but if it were done as a form of treatment because of some problem or deformity in the teeth, then there is nothing wrong with it. And Allaah knows best.” (al-Nawawi, commentary on Saheeh Muslim, 13/107).
Religion / Re: Can A Christian Do Plastic Surgery For Beauty Enhancement? by cola: 7:28pm On May 15, 2011
Hoping you guys pardon my barging in. . .

Here, the position of Islaam. . .

Praise be to Allaah.

Your question revolves around the ruling on performing plastic surgery, on which we will give you a brief summary.

Doctors who specialize in plastic or cosmetic surgery define it as surgery performed to improve the appearance of part of the body. This may be done by choice, or because it is necessary.

Plastic surgery that is considered necessary is that which is done when there is a need for it, when something does not look right, when something is missing, if there is too much or too little of something, or because something has been destroyed or deformed. At the same time, it is regarded as “cosmetic” surgery because it results in improved appearance.

Faults may be of two types: physical or congenital faults and faults which result from illness. Congenital faults include abnormally turned-out lips, hare-lips, twisted fingers or toes, etc. Faults which result from illness include the scars left by leprosy or other skin diseases, or scars caused by accidents and burns. There is no doubt that such faults and scars cause physical and psychological pain and harm, therefore Islam allows people afflicted with them to remove or reduce them by surgical means. They cause the kind of mental and psychological pain that allows this surgery as an urgent need, where necessity permits something that is ordinarily forbidden. Any cosmetic surgery which comes under this heading of need because of the fact that the reason for the surgery is causing harm is permissible, and is not considered to be changing the creation of Allaah.

I don't quite understand this!

every time some a member of the opposition issues 'a word of caution', folks here start shouting the person is inciting violence.

It goes without saying, people obviously (should) want their voice (votes) to count in selecting who leads them. If the process is compromised, the people will (should) resist. So this is rather a call for caution than a call to violence. In fact I consider such calls elderstatemanly.

Any upright person should not even need to be incited to 'protest' against corruption. And rigging is of the highest calibre of corruption.

So what is all this violence incitement spin all about?

If you sell trailers, you could also rent or lease when outright buyers are yet to come

For flatbed trailers and other types including container boxes,

post your terms and contact number here pls.

Islam for Muslims / Re: Question Muslims Will Not Ever Want To Be Asked by cola: 6:58pm On Jun 05, 2010
@surugede et al

I feel strongly that whatever I write here would only mean something to you if your mind is not prejudiced.

If only the people who say all sort of things about Islaam will quit paying attention to (studying) muslims - many of who know little or nothing about Islaam themselves - and pay half that attention to Islaam.

. . . but prejudice is a menace to intelligent reasoning.

Now,

Does the Quran instruct INDISCRIMINATE killing of christians and infidels? NO.

It will help for non-muslims and many ignorant muslims to understand that the Quran is a book of Guidance - a Constitution - for directing ALL the affairs of Islaam and muslims, just like the Nigerian constitution directs the affairs of Nigeria and Nigerians.

Now this Constitution, the Quran, prohibits the taking of life and warns strongly about it.

For the sake of social order and social justice
however, it allows the taking of life in certain instances: One of these instances is in a circumstance of war.

The verse of the Quran being quoted to allege that muslims are commanded to kill all infidels is one of the sections (verses) that give the RULES OF ENGAGEMENT in war. It talks about a situation when muslims go into a treaty (ceasefire) with the opposing army. It tells muslims to abide by the treaty. But if the opposing army breaches the agreement, then the muslims are not obliged to keep their part, they should also go all out and fight and kill the double dealing enemy force.

In fact in verse 6 of that chapter (only 2 verses away from the one being quoted), Allah (swt) says if any one the pagans ask you for asylum, grant him protection, talk to him, and escort him to where he feels secure.

Why do the people that quote the verse the hold up as evidence for killing (verse 4) gloss over or pretend not to
see verse 6. How can we be commanded to kill ALL infidels and the commanded to grant protection and escort to them at the same time.

So pls get it straight, verse 4 is only refering to combatant enemy force that were in breach of a treaty of peace.
Verse 6 is the more general one that command giving protection and escort to ANY pagan (non-muslim) that might be in any insecure circumstance at any time whatsoever.

Now, does it not make sense that the Creator should give Guidance to the people He created in ALL areas and ALL affairs of their lives?

Non-muslims need to understand that The Quran being a book of Guidance to Muslims legislates and touches ALL areas of the muslim life. From areas of business to education & training to social interaction to family to warfare - ALL.

. . . and Allah (swt) knows best.
Islam for Muslims / Re: Curious About Islam, facts About Islam. by cola: 5:48pm On May 07, 2010
It is also important to realize that the importance of salaat (establishing the prayer and going to the masjid) is such that it is the first of our deeds that will be examined before our Lord. If a person is found deficient in his salaat, there would be little or no need to look at other stuffs he comes with

If a person is found adequate in his salaat, then he has 'scaled the highest hurdle'.

may Allah (swt) overlook my error.

And Allah (swt) knows best.

Getting married to an Alhaji is an impossibilty.
I hope Lagosboy has not been banned.  undecided
Like u,i still have doubts and unanswered questions.
We can as well proceed with our questions  wink
I heard recently that on the last day, everyone wud be judged by his deeds as recorded by the 2 angels assigned to everyone. One records good deeds while the other records the bad deeds and if your good deeds surpass the bad ones u wud be given entrance to heaven.
i dont know how true that is(lagosboy is not here to help us) but assuming its true, what do u think?Methinks that one dont then need to pray or go to mosque, just keep doing good and u are there.lol

hi ify,
I just thought since Lagosboy has gone 'awol'  smiley, I might try to provide some insight to the question you asked.

Yes it is true that we all have two angels detailed to record our good deeds and bad deeds. but this in any way does not contradict any injunction of the Quran.

The good deeds referred to here include our going to the masjid (mosque) to pray and all other good stuffs that we do. Failing to establish the prayer is indeed a bad deed.

In fact, the best good deed is the act of establishing prayers at its valid time in the mosque.

The two record keepers (angels) are described as 'Kiraaman Kaatibeen', (most noble scribes). They don't miss a tiny detail.

The scribe for good deeds is eager to write good for us and even at the stage of contemplation, or the mere thought of doing good, he records a good deed for us already! (this is what Allah (swt) has commanded him). When and if we actually do the deed, he records multiple! This is Allah's Mercy. If we contemplate a bad deed but we refrain from doing it, he goes on to record a good deed for us!

The scribe for our bad deeds however is not so eager to write our bad deeds. If we do a bad deed, he does not write and leaves ample opportunity for us to realize we have done bad so we can regret and seek forgiveness of our Lord, Allah (swt). If you follow it up with another bad deed without regretting and seeking forgiveness for the previous one, then he records that previous bad deed (he records only one). This is Allah's (swt) Mercy on his servants.

I hope I've been able to put this issue in the proper perspective for you, Ify, and other readers interested.

And Allah (swt) knows best.

Politics / Re: Jos Crisis: Why We Struck –fulani Settlers by cola: 6:55pm On Mar 12, 2010
hmmmm!

I just feel a need to add my perspective to this issue. maybe, just maybe, a couple of people might appreciate it.
Even if only one person does appreciate it, the purpose would have been served.

Firstly let me say categorically that I consider the killings in Jos horrific.

If there is any evidence I need that the perpetrators of the dastardly acts in Jos do not stand for Islaam, the kiling of women and children provided it.

Even in a state of all out war, Islaam prohibits the killing of women, children, non-combatants (whether men or women), animals and destruction of plant life.

I've always had the feeling that every time crisis breaks out in the north, it's painted as religious when most times, it's tribal, ethnic and most often political. The media however, because they are either too imcompetent to do some investigative work or they are compromised by the politicians who are the architects of this crisis, they paint it with the easy and ready brush of religion - the same way the Nigerian Police find it easy to quickly call every assassination in the country armed robbery incidents.

Every time there is a problem north of the Niger, all I hear is blood-thirsty Islamic Jihadist, but the times there had been problems in the south, we didn't attach it to a particuar religion, we were content to call it ethnic.

Hausa-Fulanis are maybe mostly muslim, but their actions many times DO NOT represent Islaam. The actions many times tell of  tribes of people who are short on temperament and quick to anger. Many here do not or pretend not to understand that.

People from many of the tribes in the north, whether muslim or christian (and I'm sure you know there are many christians there) are more often than not short on temperamnent and quick to anger.

In the current crisis, if the reports that thousands of cows were killed in the January attacks are correct, then I don't see this later attacks would be difficult to fathom. You don't kill a Fulani man's cow, even one, and go to bed with your two eyes closed. The security agencies failed woefully here. This was preventable.

I read many hate-filled verbal attacks on this thread, just like on many threads on this board. While I understand the background for those hate-filled verbose, I think it is better if it is directed at the people as a tribe or ethnic group, not at their religion.

The verbal attacks are actually many times unprovoked. If ever there was a truly religious crisis, it is such unwarranted verbal attacks and expressions of hate for a religion that's the cause.

Imagine a verbal attack on the religion of a short-tempered man on the street of Funtua, a reaction (most probably over-reaction) from a short tempered people, then a counter-reaction and it snowballs into a big crisis.

@uplawal

I think you should check this your unhelpful attitude to the kiling of children and defenceless women. Must you be happy that children have been killed? What purpose does it serve? The killing of children and women is everything against the rules of engagement in Islaam. I don't see how you are helping Islaam with your perspective and attitude.

@post :

Muslims think like psychotic donkeys. Why will you celebrate Muhammeds birthday (The Mafian boss) and not yours grin grin?

Who is Muhammed anyway ? He is not a prophet in the first place.

Historically: according to the Quran, Ahadith, Arab & Islamic records, the spread of Muhammadan Islam in the Jazeera al Arabia - the Arabian Peninsula - was achieved by the shedding of a sea of Arabian blood to start with, followed later on with the Arabian conquests through the shedding of an ocean of blood of the conquered and subjugated peoples.

how is this warranted?

it is this kind of unguided utterance - provocation - that causes promblems if said to people who can't handle it.

One can imagine what a people with a hot temperament could do in the face of such unwarranted provocation.

, and then we wonder why there are many violent altercations in the north of Nigeria

a misguided provocation, a reaction (probably over-reaction), a counter (retaliation), on and on,

then we turn round and heap all the blame on the hot tempered people, the initial provocation all conviniently forgotten.

states in the north with northern govs have issues
states in the south governed by southerners have sometimes bigger issues: how do you blame the north for that

this country is in a mess because of this kind of prejudiced or at best misinformed sentiments.

think about it

Oyo state for example is NOT a northern state
Alao Akala it's governor is NOT a northerner
the people who either voted for him or couldn't stand by their votes were NOT northerners
the man who conducted the election that put him in office is NOT a northerner
the president who oversaw the electoral process at that time was NOT a northerner

let's face it, the problem is hardly the north. In fact, Joe-six-pack in the north is more victim than Joe in the south.

the problem here are the politicians, regardless of their extraction.

All of you Joes and Janes here don't see eye-to-eye,
but the politicians, north, south, east and west are friends
at least until they need to incite you the Joes for their selfish ends.

Why can't the virtues of decency and some respect for the other person be a guiding principle for people here who lay claim to some religiosity even when you are in disagreement with the other folk.

the suggestion isn't so ridiculous.
would the suggestion solve the power problems in the country? certainly not.
would it help in alleviating the hardship and make the solution achievable more quickly? i think yes.

i look at it this way:

if currently there are 1 million of those 60watts bulbs in the country (assumed figure)
that translates literally to 60million watts of consumption.
changing those to 20 wattage bulbs mean the consumption due to those lighting points become 20 million watts,
a third of the previous figure!

now again, will only that solve the problem? I repeat NO.
but obviously would be very helpful, wouldn't it?

Government should increase supply of megawatts
Citizens should endeavor to reduce demand of megawatts any way they can

now that isn't a ridiculous or unrealistic proposal, is it?
