amaifehenry: Iraki was reacting to the recent sale of Kenya's Transnational Bank to Access Bank of Nigeria, noting that Access was not the first Nigerian bank
XN Iraki, an Associate Professor at the University of Nairobi, Kenya, has expressed concerns over Nigeria's growing influence on the Kenyan economy.
Professor Iraki, in an article titled, 'Nigerians Are Not Coming, They've Already Arrived,' published in The Standard, raised the alarm over the influence of Nigerian churches, movies and banks in the country.
He said the entry of Nigerian lenders into the Kenyan market was well planned.
Iraki was reacting to the recent sale of Kenya's Transnational Bank to Access Bank of Nigeria, noting that Access was not the first Nigerian bank to get a foothold in Kenya.
"Guaranty Trust (GT) and UBA already have a presence here," he says. The professor also said many Nigerians marrying Kenyan women was another grand strategy to get into the country's market.
The article partly read, "Why is the buyout so significant to the banking sector and the Kenyan economy? Why didn't we notice it? Is that the last Nigerian purchase? First, the entry of Nigerian lenders into the Kenyan
market was well planned. It started by softening the Kenyan mind with Nigerian churches and Afrosinema movies. That changed the hardened image of Nigerians as corrupt and happy-go-lucky—an outdated image.
"From my interactions, Nigerians are serious and focused. That focus and single-mindedness are often mistaken for pride and arrogance. Once they set their goals on something, they usually get it. The means can be contested, excluding juju. For every Nigerian caught on the wrong side of the law, nine others are doing the right thing, not just in their country, but somewhere in the world. One of them supervised my dissertation.
"I recently met a Nigerian who was a member of parliament in South Africa. In America, they are top administrators in universities, medical doctors, engineers, financial analysts and other lucrative jobs. It has been predicted that Nigeria will soon be Africa's superpower. And why not? The country has gone through thick and thin, from coups and anti-coups and even a civil war, like the other superpower - USA."
"For the Nigerians, marrying our girls seems to be part of their grand strategy to get into the Kenyan market; through genes, across generations. What else will Nigerians go for after our banks? Are banks their Trojan horse into our economy? And, more curiously, why is Kenya on sale? Not that I am an economic nationalist, but what are we buying ourselves?
"Some observers argue that lack of buffer communities like Indians and whites may have worsened the ethnic contest among the big Nigerian ethnic groups, and lately minorities. I need to make a fact-finding visit to Nigeria after Covid-19.
"The other prerequisite for Nigerian superpower status includes a significant population (read market) and an educated elite that has footprints in almost all the countries in the world. Oil did not prove a reliable conveyor belt to economic growth; all eggs were put in one basket. With Covid-19, the oil curse seems real.
"The best conveyor to Nigerian superpower status is financial services. Oil needs a countervailing force. By making their banks global, Nigerians - like the British and Americans before them - will leverage onto other sectors. They can control industries, institutions, sectors - and politics indirectly. I am sure you will not see an American, Briton or Nigerian as a cashier in a bank. But who decides how the profits will be shared?
"Access Bank's entry into the Kenyan market is more than the acquisition of a lender connected with former political power wielders. It is likely to disrupt the banking industry further. The demand for more bank capitalisation by the Central Bank of Kenya and investment in fintech were the first disruptors. We can't discount Covid-19 for now.
"Remember Access Bank is more capitalised, to the tune of about $18 billion (Sh1.9 trillion). The bank spans three continents, 12 countries and has 36 million customers. Compare that with Kenya's biggest bank by capitalisation or customers. How will local banks compete with such a big bank? Some could take solace in the fact that the biggest banks in Kenya are indigenous, such as KCB and Equity. Others are merging, including NIC and CBA. But we can't rest on our laurels."

Olominira: You need to note that the following are required for a long term development of any nation;
1. Peaceful atmosphere 2. Justice system 3. Leaders with vision and high tastes 4. Education 5. Infrastructure
Akwa Ibom has been consistent with all except No 2 which is FG failure. Tourism is one area of economy that States are not looking into, AKS is doing that perfectly. Their airline would compliment this largely.
Just to mention few, AKS has world standard stadia, sport facilities, industrial revolution, agriculture, quality roads that would aid transportation, auto and several other industries that would serve entire western Africa. All these are not obvious because they're just starting.
All AKS needs to do now is to invest massively into international propaganda and image branding, and also block all sources of negative news on AKS. They need to partner with big media both national and international to synchronize with her vision. This State is getting it, and must get all necessary supports she needs
Modified:
Yes, we have a long way to go but Lagos gets it right in term of visionary leaders. You don't expect Lagos to become New York City over night, our income generation needs massive expansion which is consistent with what Lagos and Akwa Ibom States are doing currently.
There are a lot of infrastructure gaps that need to be bridged. Don't forget FG needs to assistant Inner States from Oyo, Kogi, Bornu, Enugu, Kano etc to attract industries and workforce to discongest Lagos population. All these require patience and visions.
Nigeria must try as much as possible avoid distractions like what Kanu is doing. To a large extend, Nigeria is structure such that State govts are capable of attracting foreign investments, drive innovations, research and development among others.
Calling for break up of the nation is unnecessary and would set things back once more. The best thing activists and politicians should do is to demand for total resources control by negotiations and not by spreading hates U sir r a true Nigerian... U r knowledgeable. |

Politics › Re: NIPC: Kaduna Overtakes Lagos In Investment Flow by colonelwealth(m): 12:28am On Jul 21, 2020 |
abduljabbar4: No, you are terribly wrong. Kano has been a commercial hub for centuries before the colonial masters even came to civilize the primitive natives of Lagos. It did not become so becausenof western education. Western education or not, if the state has favourable policies, raw materials and an existing market, then that state will prosper. By the way, the 40%ers in Kano that are literates are more than the population of many southern states. Also, things are no longer the way they used to be. Everyone sends his kids to school these days.
Talking about "sanity", I can authoritatively state that Kano is a lot saner than most of your states, Lagos inclusive. Kano doesn't have one million boys, doesn't have cultists, has no killer herdsmen (save for a few kidnappers that attack less than 20 people per month), has no millions of Yahoo boys and other vices. In Lagos, you find all sorts of pollution and scammers everywhere. I also dare you to mention ONE state that doesn't have mud houses in thousands. I went to Ebonyi in 2012 and I was not impressed. Same thing happened when I entered ondo state in 2014. I would pick my state (Kaduna) over any of them.
There is no false hope here. Northern States like Kebbi, Kano, Gombe and Kaduna have been getting lots of FDIs over the past few years. Kaduna just surpassed your almighty Lagos.
Talking about the contrast of Abuja and other northern states, you are being a hypocrite. How many states in Southern Nigeria can measure up to Lagos?
Proximity to Abuja DID NOT DEVELOP KADUNA. If you take a few seconds of your time to actually think, you would ask yourself : what about the other states that are close to Abuja? Kaduna is not the only state near Abuja. During the time of Ramalan Hero and Yakowa, they did nothing to improve Kaduna state but people like Makarfi, Namadi Sambo and best of all, Elrufa'i are responsible for the recent transformation of Kaduna. In fact, I believe we will soon overtake Kano with the amount of projects going on.
Kano and Kaduna have a high amount of population (which is one of the major reasons for Lago's success whether you agree or not). Kanawas are known for business. They have the best businessmen in Northern Nigeria. Most of them are more geared towards commerce than school, and that is why they have millions of ILLITERATE millionaires and billionaires. Imagine a state like that having a sea port. They would be on the same level with your Lagos.
Actually, Abuja did not significantly change until the era of Obasanjo. Yes, it was under a southerners administration that Abuja was transformed but you can't undermine the superb expertise of the FCT minister. It isn't Obasanjo that is known as "Mai Rusau" today, it's a northerner. Also, by your logic, we can say that the north developed Lagos since more Northerners ruled than Southerners since 1960.
Abuja did enjoy decrees, but so did Lagos since the late 1800s! The white men played a major part in the development of Lagos and no matter what, FCTs will always get benefits. Move the FCT to Zamfara today and I will assure you that in the next 10 years, it will be better than most Nigerian states.
To understand this, ask yourself why South Africa, the country with most White Settlers, is more developed than all the countries in Subsaharan Africa. It's because the white came in and favored themselves right from the start. It's the reason the best neighborhoods till that are owned by the whites. It's the same factor that is favoring Lagos and not because it's citizens have superhuman brains. Abdul, u r a knowledgeable fellow. The North has been rising with & without FG's favours. The north is rich&has political capacity. The challenge with the south is deliberate deception&blame trading. Most times u see southerners shout 'the north is poor&illiterate' leaving their own obvious issues. The south has huge amazing potentials but must first start solving her problems without looking for excuses either true or false. The southern people must leave the north to handle her issues and focus in achieving her huge potentials & holding her leaders to account. Atleast 10 southern States has the potentials to be even bigger economics than Lagos. |

Since the end of the civil war Igbos have steadily risen to prominent security positions at one time or d other. During the military (dominated by Northerns) Igbo sons&daughter have been rising steadily. During that same military period an Igbo man has been the DG of SSS now DSS . since democracy an Igbo woman has become comptroller general of Nig. Immigration service. Generals&security chiefs of Igbo extraction have in one time or the other commanded major security positions in this country. Political wise Igbos have been rising steadily even to become a Vice-president(Alex Ekwueme)& other high& sensitive ministerial positions. Even economically, socially&everyother wise Igbos r making progress& will continue to. The only post left is that of President, which in no distant time will he achieved.. Time happens to everything under the sun&when its time everything will align to make it happen and nothing will stop it. Its not by wishing Igbos failure, it will definitely happen. The North knows this& have even/ will be more willing to negotiate when the time is set and South south region is not a problem either. fratermathy: There is no doubt that there are genuine reasons why schools should be closed in Nigeria. In fact, I agree with many of the arguments that people have made to defend this. However, there are many factors that must be considered before we conclude the matter. I'll just itemise them:
1. Covid-19 has no cure or vaccine and even if one comes up tomorrow, it'll realistically take more than 3 years to reach up to 30% of the Nigerian population. Corona is here to stay. There's no future utopia where the virus magically disappears. It won't go away next year so postponing resumption of schools means postponing the inevitable. In fact, by next year, for instance, the cases may be in the millions in Nigeria. Will schools be closed forever? Or you think our insensitive government will perform some magic?
2. Social distancing doesn't work in Nigeria. I don't know about your location but in mine, people go about their normal lives and there's nothing anyone can do about it. The children are still playing with their mates every day. Parents go to work and markets and may likely import the virus to their homes.
3. Children still go to churches or mosques (which are open in most places). Religious and social gatherings are known super spreaders of the virus.
4. So far, children are nowhere near vulnerable as far as Covid-19 is concerned. While this argument can be upended, it is a strong factor nonetheless. Children are not so much in danger as their teachers and the teachers are mature enough to protect themselves adequately.
5. Students in public schools in remote and riverine areas are struggling and therefore may face certain learning challenges if they stay out of school for too long. Many may lose interest in schools altogether. I have been to these places and I know how averse they are to education. Many simply go to school because their mates are going. Should they stay home for long periods, they may likely never resume whenever schools open (which, going by the logic of some concerns, can take more than 2 years).
6. Private school teachers have not been paid for months because, unlike the public sector, they have to work before they are paid. Furthermore, many of them have been organising lessons for miserly wages (this also contradicts why schools should be closed). Indeed, many of those who want schools to remain closed have means of educating their children effectively, forgetting the fisherman's child in Oporoza who either goes to school or hunts for bait worms.
7. Once again, corona is here to stay. There are many workarounds that can be easily adopted to curtail populated classrooms. We must either accept the reality of Covid-19 or simply all remain at home - no markets, malls, churches, mosques, work etc because no one is better or worse than schools as far as the virus is concerned. If you can afford homeschooling or online learning for your children, you should definitely go for it. However, what is good for Bernard is not necessarily good for Benetutukayo and it is nobody's fault that we have an irresponsible government that can't provide adequate infrastructure for times like this.
I am a realist in matters like this but there are factors that policy makers must consider even if schools must remain closed. Until the factors are appropriately pictured, we may be doing more harm due to our inability to see the wider picture. There are reasons why the lockdown didn't last in Nigeria. These are the same reasons why schools can't remain closed indefinitely. U Sir r intelligent and have spoken well. |
