he families of six victims of extra-judicial killings by police officers that shook Abuja in 2005 have expressed disappointment over the reinstatement and ‘speedy’ promotion of one of the alleged arrowheads, a deputy commissioner of police (DCP), charged with the murders. The then DCP, Ibrahim Danjuma, and four other officers were tried for the killing of the five automobile spare-parts dealers and a woman between the night of June 7 and 8, 2005. The victims had spent time at a club on Gimbiya Street, Area 11, and were returning to their home in Apo neighbourhood when they encountered some police officers who opened fire on them after an altercation. The police had initially said that the victims, whose ages were between 21-25 and included a woman, were armed robbers. But a panel set up by President Olusegun Obasanjo to look into the matter dsimissed most of the accounts by the police and recommended Mr Danjuma and his men for trial. The five officers and eight other witnesses testified before the panel that Mr Ibrahim, the most senior of the accused officers, allegedly ordered the killings. All the officers were immediately placed on suspension by the police. Twelve years later, two of the officers were convicted and sentenced to death, but the FCT High Court presiding judge, Ishaq Bello, said there was no evidence to convict Mr Danjuma and two others. In November, 2017, the police confirmed to PREMIUM TIMES that Mr Danjuma had been reinstated but said the reinstatement was approved by the Police Service Commission which relied on the judgement of the FCT High Court that freed him after finding him not culpable. Mr Danjuma’s rank was restored, his accumulated salaries from June 2005, were also paid with plans to send him on a refresher course, a police memo published by Sahara Reporters showed. source: Premium times |
The Federal High Court on Friday dismissed all the 13 counts of money laundering and passport fraud instituted by the Federal Government against a serving Justice of the Supreme Court, Justice Sylvester Ngwuta. Justice Ngwuta was among the judicial officers whose houses were raided by the operatives of the Department of State Services in October 2016. He was subsequently charged with various corruption offences by the Office of the Attorney-General of the Federation. Ruling on an application by him on Friday, the trial judge, Justice John Tsoho, dismissed the charges on the grounds. Justice Tsoho, whose ruling was anchored on an earlier judgment of the Court of Appeal, held that the pre-conditions for instituting charges against a judicial officer were not met before charging Justice Ngwuta. http://punchng.com/breaking-court-sets-supreme-court-justice-ngwuta-free-of-corruption-charges/amp/

The Yobe State Coordinator of the Joint Admission Matriculation Board, Sanusi Atose, has blamed the ongoing Boko Haram insurgency in Nigeria’s North-East for his inability to account for N613,000 belonging to the board. JAMB had summoned Mr. Atose to Abuja to appear before an administrative panel led by Registrar Ishaq Oloyede to explain the disappearance of the cash after he received registration scratch cards of that amount. But in his explanation, the official, according to details of the session exclusively obtained by PREMIUM TIMES, claimed an alleged Boko Haram attack in Yobe State left him unable to account for the money. Mr. Atose said tellers, receipts and invoices were destroyed in the attack, which he said left him with no documentation for the transaction. Also appearing before the panel, Daniel Agbor, who is the Kogi State coordinator of JAMB, said he spent N7 million his office could not account for on assisting other workers in his office, who he said were ravaged by poverty. He also claimed that some of the cards sent to the state were stolen by unknown persons. “The state of the state offices is such that we are in poverty and money is there with us,” the coordinator told the panel. “You need the grace of God in the state offices not to steal money because money is tempting. We borrowed the money and I am not the only one, I will provide the list of everyone involved in the fraud,” Mr Agbor said. source from premium times |

About 10 members of the Senate have staged a walk-out in protest against the adoption of the report by the Senate and House of Representatives Joint Committee on the Amendment to the Electoral Act. The protesters say despite the adoption of the report by the Senate, they would insist on its reversal. They alleged that the amendment was targeted at President Muhammadu Buhari. Chairman of the Senate Committee on the Independent National Electoral Commission, Senator Suleiman Nazif, had presented the report at the plenary on Wednesday. After the presentation, President of the Senate put the adoption of the report to voice vote, saying there was no need for debate on it as it was from a conference committee which had harmonised the versions of the two chambers. After the vote, the ‘ayes’ had it and Saraki ruled on it — a development that generated an uproar in the chamber. Saraki also ruled against three senators who raised points of order to protest against the adoption. |

Following the beheading of a 70-year-old farmer in Iseyin, Oyo State, the Agbekoya Farmers Association, AFA, has vowed to deal with herdsmen in their own way, if the federal and state governments failed to curb herdsmen’s activities. They also issued an ultimatum to all herdsmen in their lands to leave immediately. This came as the leader of Fulani in the South West, Alhaji Mohammed Bambado, and his counterpart at Oke-Ogun, Alhaji Bello, claimed that they had lost four of their men. Recall that a 70-year old farmer, identified as Mustapha, alias Baba Jeje, was beheaded on his farm by herdsmen, while his son, who was with him on the farm, was also said to have been injured by the herdsmen who destroyed crops in the farm. The farmer had since been buried according to Islamic injunctions. Speaking with Vanguard, President-General of Agbekoyas Worldwide, Kamoru Okiki Aremu, said the deceased was a gentle man who was very popular at Iseyin. Aremu warned that unless the Federal Government and Governor Abiola Ajimobi arrest and prosecute the culprits, the Agbekoyas would declare war on herdsmen all over Oyo State. Aremu said: “They killed a farmer at Iseyin three days ago. They slaughtered him and then beheaded him. What was his offence? He complained that their cattle ate his dried cassava tubers. It was his child who narrowly escaped that raised alarm. We cannot take this any longer. “As a result of the killing, some of my members called me to get permission if they could go in search of the assailants. We can’t wait for the Police again. Police can’t guarantee us safety again. We have severally complained to the Police, the state government and the Federal Government and we have found out they cannot handle the issue.” Asked if it would be easy to get the alleged killer, he replied saying he knew that majority of the herdsmen were stubborn. “If they don’t release the killer, we won’t take this lightly. We can no longer fold our arms while they have field day mowing down our people. We are ready for whatever happens. Enough is enough. We thought we could live together in peace, but these ones don’t understand the language of peace.” Similarly, the leader of Agbekoya in Oyo State, Alhaji Shehu said: “We have been given the mandate not to sit by and watch these lawless herdsmen. Our people are already in the bush looking for them. “We know that the real culprit is not easy to find. What we are saying is that they should leave our lands and anyone who fails to heed the warning should have himself to blame. “You need to see the inhuman manner they killed the farmer. His children had to be picking his body parts that had been decapitated. Just some days ago, they killed a SARS commander at Saki. We have had enough of these killings and we are tired of it. They have inflicted so much pain on us in this Oke Ogun area and we have been driven to the wall. We can’t tolerate this any longer,” he added.
