SportsNFF Technical Committee Urges LMC To Check Irregularities In NPFL by comos(op): 8:15am On Apr 04, 2017
The Nigeria Football Federation’s (NFF) Technical Committee has urged the League Management Company (LMC) to guide against some irregularities in the professional league, especially the win at all cost approach by some home clubs.

Arguing that the trend if not checked could tarnish the efforts of the body to grow the league, a member of the committee, Christian Chukwu picked the results of matches played at the weekend to buttress his point.

He said some unscrupulous club officials and referees were damaging the league, adding that unlike the past two seasons, it was becoming difficult for teams to win matches outside their homes.

The Enugu Rangers boss, who said fair officiating would attract more fans to the league, called on the LMC to monitor the activities of the referees to curb bad officiating in matches.

5. Bola Tinubu

Once hailed as the next Awolowo, Bola Tinubu is now looking more like Afonja incarnate. His mystical toga was first torn to shreds by the Saraki faction of the APC which taught Tinubu a valuable lesson that the national assembly is not division 4 Alausa local league. Rebuffed by Buhari in public to his face that the APC has no national leader, Buhari will later cut Tinubu to size by rejecting all his proposals for ministerial nomination from the SW and later seal his political coffin in Ondo election.

Bola and his wife Remi Tinubu have now confined themselves to Bourdillon Road with the likes of Dino daring the lion in its cave to come out.

CrimeBREAKING: Ife Clash, IGP Justifies Arrest Of Only Yoruba Suspects by comos(op): 4:01pm On Mar 24, 2017
The Inspector-General of Police, Mr. Ibrahim Idris, on Friday justified the arrest of only suspects of Yoruba extraction over the recent clash in Ile-Ife, Osun State, which resulted in the death of about 46 persons. He said crime neither has tribe nor identity.

Idris spoke with State House correspondents shortly after briefing President Muhammadu Buhari of security situations in parts of the country inside the Presidential Villa, Abuja.

The police had been in the eye of the storm for arresting and parading 20 Yoruba persons, including a monarch, over the clash while not a single Hausa/Fulani person was detained.

The pan-Yoruba group, Afenifere; and the Oodua Peoples Congress are among groups and individuals that have been criticising the police over the development.

Idris however said the police would not hesitate to apply the law once criminal cases are established against individuals, irrespective of their tribe.

He said, “You know we are police officers. Crime has no tribe. If you are a criminal, you are a criminal.

“Crime has no face. We don’t look at crime in the identity of where you are coming from.

“As far as you are a criminal and the police find you wanting, we apply the law.”

He said investigation had revealed that the crisis started with a disagreement between two people selling food along the road.

CrimeSoldiers Kill Pupil, Injure Others While Rescuing Herdsmen by comos(op): 9:05am On Mar 24, 2017
One of the bullets reportedly fired by soldiers attached to 707 Special Forces Brigade in Makurdi, Benue State, has killed a secondary school pupil, identified as Ayew Atume.

It was gathered that Atume, a resident of Jato Aka in the Kwande Local Government Area of the state, was having a lunch in his parents’compound after returning from school on Tuesday when the stray bullet hit him. He reportedly died at the spot.

UNCH Metro gathered that some members of a vigilance group in the community had intercepted a car conveying some suspected Fulani herdsmen.

The security guards were said to have found arms in the vehicle, which made them to detain the occupants.

A resident, who did not give his name, said the herdsmen alerted soldiers in the Kashimbila area of the state, who raced to the scene and allegedly freed the men, shooting continuously. In the process, one of the bullets killed Atume.

The resident said, “Youths keeping vigilance on the town acted on a tip-off and intercepted a vehicle conveying some suspected herdsmen who were in possession of arms. The suspects called soldiers in Kashimbila who then called their colleagues stationed in Jato Aka to rescue the men.

“The soldiers arrived at the scene and whisked the car and the occupants to their base. The continued insistence of the youth for the vehicle to be handed over to the police angered the soldiers who started shooting indiscriminately into the air to frighten them.

“Ayew (Atume) was killed by a stray bullet. The boy just returned from school and was taking his lunch in his parents’ compound near the scene of the incident when the bullet hit him. He died instantly.”

Another resident said several other persons were injured in the commotion that followed the shootings as people scampered to safety.

“The situation now is such that residents of the town are leaving, while commercial activities have been put to a halt.

The villagers are alleging conspiracy between the Fulani herdsmen and the soldiers to destroy the town. Many residents were injured on Tuesday by the soldiers’ bullets, including a community leader,” he added.

PoliticsIle-ife: Afenifere Mobilises 100 Lawyers To Defend Suspects by comos(op): 9:13am On Mar 23, 2017
Yoruba socio-cultural organisation, Afenifere, has said it will assemble over 100 lawyers to defend the 20 indigenes of Ile-Ife, who are being held for their alleged involvement in the recent clash between the indigenes and the Hausa community in the town.

The PUNCH learnt on Wednesday that the organisation had secured the readiness of no fewer than 18 lawyers of Yoruba extraction to represent the accused persons free.

The National Publicity Secretary of Afenifere, Yinka Odumakin, stated this in an interview with one of our correspondents in Abuja.

He was reacting to the demand for clarifications by The PUNCH on a statement by him on the fate of the Ife citizens.

“For now, about 18 Yoruba sons and daughters, who are all lawyers, have expressed interest to defend their brothers who have been falsely accused. Many others are coming to join. At the end, Afenifere will be having over 100 Yoruba lawyers to defend the 20 Ife indigenes,” he said.

In the statement, Afenifere said it would resist the undue deployment of federal troops in the South-West to settle ethnic scores.

It added, “Following the illegal, unconstitutional and sectional parade of 20 Ife indigenes over the recent clashes between the host community and Arewa settlers, Afenifere has vowed to resist the undue deployment of federal might to settle ethnic scores.

“As a first step in this regard, we have assembled a powerful team of lawyers to enforce the fundamental human rights of the 20 abducted Yoruba persons.

“It is a settled law that the investigation and trial of suspects must take place at the scene of the crime. We are appreciative of the many lawyers of Yoruba extraction who have taken up this challenge pro bono.

“The legal team will challenge this subversion of due process while political pressure continues on why two communities will be involved in a fight and only members of one community will be put on trial by a police whose leadership is of the same ethnic group with the other party in the conflict.

“We restate the fact that the Arewa group started the killings in Ife by killing a Yoruba young man. This is clearly missing in the skewed report by the police.

“We appeal to our people to be calm while we pursue the legal angle to this challenge to our pride as a people as the first step.”

Meanwhile, the Civil Societies Coalition for the Emancipation of Osun State has called on the Inspector-General of Police, Mr. Ibrahim Idris, to release innocent persons arrested in connection with the clash in Ile-Ife.

The chairman of the group, Mr. Sulaiman Adeniyi, said this in a statement made available to one of our correspondents in Osogbo on Wednesday.

He stated that Yoruba people across Nigeria would rise against the bias, adding that the people would not allow the kind of mindless arrests targeted at the race during the June 12, 1993 impasse to stand.

Adeniyi, who blamed President Muhammadu Buhari and Governor Rauf Aregbesola for not saying anything against the biased investigation by the police, argued that the lopsided investigation could pit the people against the police.

The group described the security operatives’ action as unacceptable, barbaric, unfair, satanic, evil, ungodly and a crime against humanity and God.

It added, “The police should live above board in dealing with a situation of this nature by not engaging in action that might trigger another crisis in our society.

“Nothing good will come out of the police investigation than unnecessary tension to the peaceful town.

“Yoruba are not second-class citizens to other ethnic groups in Nigeria and the security operatives’ action is unacceptable and totally rejected by all and sundry.

“Our advice to the Nigeria Police over this matter is to release the innocent residents arrested unconditionally by going for an amicable resolution (of the crisis).

“We do not want a situation where citizens will be attacking police formations in the area if their family members are not released on time.

“As we all know, the Hausa and Yoruba have been living together in Ile-Ife and other towns in Osun State for a very long time and this avoidable Ile-Ife crisis should not be allowed to escalate.

The group called on human rights groups and individual rights activists to rise against what it described as an injustice done to the people of Ile-Ife after the destruction of the lives of the indigenes and their properties.

The Nigerian senate on Wednesday called for the resignation of Hameed Ali, comptroller-general of the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS).

The senate also declared Ali unfit to hold public office and condemned a letter written by Abubakar Malami, attorney-general of the federation (AGF).

Here are seven Senators that participated at today's plenary:

1. Senator Biodun Olujimi representing Ekiti south senatorial district has said that the action of Nigeria customs, Hameed Ali is a breach of Constitution and a grand display of arrogance.

2. Senator Abaribe Enyannaya representing Abia south senatorial district said Customs Boss, Hameed Ali made an obnoxious policy, it was in this process that we invited him to explain his policy.

He stated that it makes no sense for the CG @CustomsNG to rush to court to secure a deliberate injunction over his invitation by the Nigerian Senate.

3. Senator Dino Melaye Representing Kogi west Senatorial District on Wednesday said the Comptroller General of Customs, Hammed Ali must appear before it in customs uniform.

4. Senator Isah Misau said:"If the Attorney General can write a letter to the senate, He wondered what advise he gives Mr. President".

"Enemies of this Government are within the Presidency", he said.

5. Senator Aliyu Sabi urged the Senate to cancel the collection of duty until a more robust method of collection can be agreed upon

6. Senator George Sekibo said the letter from the Attorney General undermines the Senate as an institution and must be investigated

7. Deputy Senate President, Ike Ekweremadu said it is important that the integrity of the Senate must be maintained at all times.

"There's no big deal in asking a public officer to dress properly, people should be proud of what they do

"We as public officers should live an exemplary life and obey laws in accordance of the constitution".
