Politics › Re: 2017 Internally Generated Revenue (IGR) And The "Poor" 5 Igbo States by conehead2018: 8:13pm On Mar 28, 2018 |
ariesbull: When the IGR data was released for the year 2017, it told a sad story for the 5 Igbo States namely Enugu. Anambra, Imo, Ebonyi and Abia.
None of these states can survive by what the generates as revenue without federal allocation. What it means is that these 5 south eastern states are poor and financially insecure. This is very dangerous. The danger is without federal allocation these 5 south eastern states will not be able to pay salaries or keep the states running. This may result to high borrowing without proper payback financial plan which may further worsen the situation.https://etimes.com.ng/2017-internally-generated-revenue-igr-and-the-poor-5-igbo-states/
For instance, Cross River State generates more money than Anambra State, and Ogun State generates more money than the entire 5 south eastern states put together last year.
Last year, Anambra State passed the 2017 Appropriation Bill of N115.5 billion, but generated N17.3 billion as Internal Generated Revenue. The danger is that Anambra State spent 6.6 times higher than what the state generated last year. Another danger is when the "free" federal allocation does not pass through a productive channel, it exacerbates inflation. For instance, salaries shouldn't be paid directly with federal allocation. It should be paid from the state "federal allocation" investment proceeds, but this is not the case. I am using Anambra State as a model.
It would have been better if it was the other way round. That is to say Anambra State generates N150 billion as IGR, and gets N10 billion as federal allocation.
Last year, Abia State passed the 2017 Appropriation Bill of N102.5 billion, but generated N14.9 billion as Internally Generated Revenue.
Enugu State passed the 2017 Appropriation Bill of N105.7 billion, but generated N22 billion as Internally Generated Revenue.https://etimes.com.ng/2017-internally-generated-revenue-igr-and-the-poor-5-igbo-states/
Imo State passed the 2017 Appropriation Bill of N131 billion, but generated N6.8 billion as Internally Generated Revenue.
Ebonyi State passed the 2017 Appropriation Bill of N127.2 billion, but generated N5.1 billion as Internally Generated Revenue.
Is it that the eastern government has inefficient tax regime? Is the IGR a reflection of the southeastern states' economy? How can the southeastern states become economically viable to the extent of not depending on the federal allocation?
2017 IGR for the selected States below: (ENUGU - N22,039,222,902.86) (ANAMBRA - N17,365,385,830.51) (IMO - N6,850,796,866.07) (EBONYI - N5,102,902,366.82) (ABIA - N14,917,141,805.80)
*(OGUN - N74,835,979,000.51) higher than all 5 south eastern states IGR put together. *(CROSS RIVER N18,104,562,225.62) higher than Anambra State.https://etimes.com.ng/2017-internally-generated-revenue-igr-and-the-poor-5-igbo-states/

chris2h: THE IMPLICATIONS OF GENERAL TY DANJUMAS COMMMENTS: THE DESTRUCTION OF NIGERIA BY CHRISTOPHER HARUNA HAMMAN
Over the weekend I did not have the time to take a look at the news as I always do due to the fact that I made new friends and was getting to understand them and their personalities (again as I always do). Only for this morning for me to wake up to check my e-mails and social media accounts to find out that one of our great legends and a national icon all by himself had addressed a group of young people at their convocation and within the address called on people to take up arms in the interest of self defense.
General Theophilus Yakubu Danjuma is a legend all by himself. Agreed. However, he seems to want to destroy the very fabric of the country that made him so. The middle belt of this great country is the great uniting factor that bridges the divide between the conservatism of the north and the liberalism of the south. It is the very region that ultimately decides who wins or loses the presidential elections. It is the very place upon which the cradle of our national unity is birthed. Then you have one of the greats from that region call for the taking up of arms. One would then realize that we still have a long way to go in uniting Nigeria.
One obvious truth about the herdsman killings which cannot be ignored is that they employ guerrilla tactics in order to maintain an upper hand in the fluidity of conflict. As such, the balance of power when it comes to victory always lies in the hands of the so called herdsmen. As it is always with the rest of state when it comes to putting together an appropriate response to the newly formed menace, the government will take some time before results from all they are trying to do start to show.
One may fault the current administration on many things (which I do from time to time, just check my facebook wall), but not on security. The one thing that I have found to be quite impressive is President Buhari's commitment to the ensuring of the safety of lives and property of every Nigerian.
General Danjuma has just shot himself in the foot. This is because this is not 1980 or even 1998 that people will forget his statements in a hurry. This brings to the fore the issue of the Generals'minders and communications advisers. Were they asleep when he made those comments? He has just influenced a whole generation of young people to fight anyone that does not resemble them either in tribe, interest or religion and has forgotten that the great state of Nigeria owes its very existence to the unity in diversity concept that makes us the powerhouse that we are.
We cannot ignore the Nigeria becoming Somalia comment. We should not forget that it is words like these from people like him that cause the very scenarios that made such places to become known for the carnage and destruction that occurred. Nigeria is too big for anyone who has become like a living demigod to some to wake up one day and call for civil violence on a massive scale. Imagine if every person in Nigeria who can bear arms to have a gun, imagine what kind of destruction and waste to human life can occur on such a scale? The military is right on this one and the restriction of arms is not a bad thing in itself. It is for our security nationally.
Probably it is time for the General at 80 to take some time off to relax and enjoy his family. Such comments that fan the flames and embers of national disunity with the hints of insurrection and are not needed especially considering the fact that next year is an election year or is General TY trying to tell us something that we need to know politically? Is this what the General wants to be known for? A conflict creator?
Nigerias' future depends on the ability of Nigerians to believe in Nigeria. It appears that even the General has stopped believing in the Nigeria that made him what he is today. And many Nigerians were hailing his comments and supporting the bearing of arms by the general civilian populace. Only if they understood the very implications of those comments. That is when and where you hear things like mass genocide, civil war and so on and so forth. Anybody who understands the results of warfare would be careful to speak when talking about such things.
We as Nigerians should believe in the politics of ideas. Not one of tribe, religion or separatist sentiments. Imagine if the Northern Muslims and Southern Christian Generals and National Icons also call for the bearing of arms. What kind of scenario would that create?
God bless the Federal Republic of Nigeria. United we stand. Divided we fall! moderators please move this to the garbage section. |

The Yaba College is the first tertiary educational institute in Nigeria. Yaba College was transferred to Ibadan in 1948. That was when it became the University College of Ibadan. This is the name some of our fathers and grandfathers still call the University of Ibadan till today. So, when did we start calling the institution University of Ibadan and when was it moved to its own site.
In February 1948, London University allowed Ibadan its special relationship scheme. Arthur Creech Jones, then Secretary of State for the Colonies, and an influential member of Elliot Commission, cut the first sod at the permanent site of the University College on 17 November, 1948, which thereafter became the Foundation Day.

The girls were released by Boko Haram barely 30 days after their abduction.
Okorocha pointed out that President Muhammadu Buhari has displayed strong political wil, adding that how a leader responds to situations goes a long way to show his weakness or strength.
The Governor said since Buhari came on board, he has continued to show that action speaks louder than words.
His reaction was contained in a terse statement made available to newsmen in Owerri, the state capital. by his Chief Press Secretary, Sam Onwuemeodo.
The statement said, “Even the way and manner the President led the nation out of recession without allowing the development to linger was a clear indication of strong leadership and that is the reason the nation or Nigerians should continue to support him to fully stabilize the polity.”
He further noted that “if the previous leadership had equally put into play, that level of needed political will or strong leadership, the lengthy story of the Chibok girls would have perhaps, been shortened”.
