•217 research grants get approval

The Federal Government, through the Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund) has approved N292.66 billion for disbursement to some public universities, polytechnics and colleges of education (CoEs) across the country.

TETFund Executive Secretary Prof. Suleiman Bogoro said the intervention, which has Federal Government’s approval, would be spread to higher institutions in each of the six geo-political zones in the country.

At least, one university from each of the six- geo-political zones will get N906.8 million while about N628.4 million will go to one polytechnic and one college of education from each of the six geo-political zones.

Bogoro announced this yesterday while welcoming heads of beneficiary institutions to a one-day stakeholders’ meeting at the Nigeria Air Force (NAF) Conference Centre in Abuja.

The TETFund boss stressed the need to complete the national headquarters of National Library of Nigeria, which he said the Federal Government had handed over to the fund.

He said the library project represented an important national asset that should not be ignored due to funding challenges.

Bogoro also stressed the essence of research to national development, saying the administration of President Muhammadu Buhari had been consistent in approving funds to see that academics produce quality researches that would address emerging challenges bedeviling the country.

He said this accounted for the setting up of the National Research Fund, which has increased from N3 billion to N8.5 billion in recent times.

Bogoro, who expressed delight that Nigeria was moving closer to having a National Research and Development Foundation, urged academics in the country to turn around the fortunes of the country through cutting-edge researches.

He said: “Let us apply our innovative research outcomes to solve the security problems. Let us bring back value addition to the solid minerals that we are blessed with. It is the goldmine we have not explored to any significant level.”

On the 2021 research grants to lecturers, Bogoro advised the nation’s academics to live up to expectations by producing good proposals.

The TETFund boss said the fund was ready to finance such academic exercises.

“I have signed the letters of allocation for the research grants that we are issuing out – 217 of them. This is the highest research grant ever. It has never gone beyond 200. We have 217 research grants that have recently been approved,” he said.

Speaking on the recent special allocations by TETFund’s Board of Trustees (BoT), Bogoro said N5 billion each was approved for the University of Lagos (UNILAG) and Ahmadu Bello University (ABU) in Zaria for massive infrastructural projects development.

The TETFund boss said N1 billion was also approved for the completion of special intervention projects at Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU) in Ile-Ife, Osun State and another N1 billion for Imo State Polytechnic, Umuagwo.

According to him, more tertiary institutions will benefit from the special allocations soon.

Bogoro said TETFund was also providing support to boost research activities in Defence Industries Corporation of Nigeria (DICON), among others, to address the nation’s security challenges.

On the fund’s intervention in the Health sector, the agency boss explained that TETFund had provided N1 billion to one university each in the six geo-political zones for medical research as well as providing facilities for the treatment of major ailments, like prostate cancer, kidney problems, among others.

If Osinbajo wins, his first term will be fighting 2 fights; fight to appease the northerners like GEJ, and fight to remain loyal to Tinubu and surrogates. That’s a good definition of a presidency spent achieving nothing. Because he achieved little in his first 4 years, he will now have to rig the next election so he’ll depend on the APC rigging infrastructure, which means, his next 4 years will be spent being loyal to the cabal rather than doing anything meaningful for Nigeria.

If Atiku wins, he’ll try to run an inclusive government, maintain loyalty to the northern cabal, and try to appease the SE and SS to make it easier for himself. To cut long story short, he and his cabal will be the richest Nigerians when he’s done with his second term, Nigeria will continue to struggle and nothing much will be achieved.

The Coalition of South East Youth Leaders, COSEYL, Thursday, condemned the arrest of a former governor of Abia state, Senator Theodore Ahamefula Orji, at the Abuja airport by the officials of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC.

Orji was intercepted at about 10 am this morning and brought to the headquarters of EFCC at Jabi, Abuja, for continuation of his interrogation.

Explaining the reason for the interception, the commission said Orji was arrested over his refusal to abide by the bail conditions given to him by the agency.

A source confirmed to the newspaper that the former governor refused to return his international passport, which was deposited with the body after he used it to travel to Dubai for medical attention last year.

The source said the former governor also declined to turn him himself for further questioning upon return from the Arab country, thereby forcing the antigraft agency to put him on its watch list.

He has been under investigation over alleged misappropriation of state funds worth 55 billion during his tenure as governor of his state.

Reacting in a statement signed by Hon. Goodluck Egwu Ibem, President General and Comrade Kanice Igwe, Secretary General, the group opined: “The Coalition of South East Youth Leaders, COSEYL, the umbrella body of all the youth organisations in the South East geopolitical zone condemns in strongest terms the interception of a sitting Distinguish Senator of the federal Republic of Nigeria representing Abia Central Senatorial zone at the Senate, Distinguished Senator Theodore Ahamefula Orji at the Nnamdi Azikiwe international Airport Abuja by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC.

“The interception of the highly respected and revered Igbo Senator whose address is known and public knowledge even to the EFCC who should have extended an invitation to him if need be, is a calculated attempt to gag opposition and ridicule Ndigbo before the public as bad people so as to deny them an opportunity of producing a Nigerian President of Igbo Extraction come 2023.

“If Senator Theodore Orji who have made it public that he is retiring from active politics in 2023 will be so embarrassed and intercepted at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, it means that every other opposition member mainly of the Peoples Democratic Party and other Igbo political office holders are in great danger and will be targeted very soon. Opposition Members and Ndigbo have been marked to be dealt with.

“It has never been heard that a sitting Senator from the North was intercepted at the Airport by the EFCC. They have never been intercepted the way they just did to an Igbo highly respected and revered Senator T. A. Orji. What has Ndigbo done to deserve this kind of ill-treatment in a supposed democratic administration?.

“Senator Theodore Orji is a man that has great respect for constituted authorities and has never declined honouring any invitation extended to him from any government agency on any matter. The interception of this great Igbo Leader at the Airport leaves much to desired.

“It is on record that when Senator Theodore Orji held sway as governor of Abia state from 2007 to 2015, he used the security votes and other funds he received judiciously for the security and well-being of Abia citizens who also testified of his good works . Salaries where paid as at when due and the was infrastructural development during his tenure. Youths, women and men were empowered by his administration. The poverty index was reduced to the bearest minimum via his empowerment programmes.

“The petitions against the Distinguish Senator and his family is just the handiwork of political enemies who are intimidated by his political profile and the love the good people of Abia state have for their former governor.

“We call on all Igbo political leaders, businessmen and women, youths, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and all lovers of democracy to rise up against the current clamp down on the opposition and Ndigbo.

“We therefore demand the immediate release of Senator Theodore Ahamefula Orji, Rt. Hon. Chinedu Orji and Ogbonna who are currently under EFCC custody to continue with their service to the people and humanity”.
