Crime › 4Sale And Haraj Apps Used By Arabs To Buy African Slaves Uncovered By BBC by ContractKiller(op): 8:39am On Nov 10, 2019

The Apps are known as 4Sale and Haraj and can be downloaded on Apple's app store and Google play.

The use of these apps is widespread across the Middle East, and the BBC Arabic Service Undercover team decided to investigate how users of these apps use them for the buying and selling of black slaves, particularly young women from West Africa.

Posing as a married couple newly arrived in Kuwait, the BBC Arabic undercover team spoke to 57 app users and visited more than a dozen people who were trying to sell them their domestic worker via a popular commodity app called 4Sale.

The sellers almost all advocated confiscating the women's passports, confining them to the house, denying them any time off and giving them little or no access to a phone.

The 4Sale app allowed you to filter by race, with different price brackets clearly on offer, according to category.

"African worker, clean and smiley," said one listing. Another: "Nepalese who dares to ask for a day off."

When speaking to the sellers, the undercover team frequently heard racist language. "Indians are the dirtiest," said one, describing a woman being advertised.

The team were urged by app users, who acted as if they were the "owners" of these women, to deny them other basic human rights, such as giving them a "day or a minute or a second" off.

One man, a policeman, looking to offload his worker said: "Trust me she's very nice, she laughs and has a smiley face. Even if you keep her up till 5am she won't complain."

He told the BBC team how domestic workers were used as a commodity.

"You will find someone buying a maid for 600 KD ($2,000), and selling her on for 1,000 KD ($3,300)," he said.

He suggested how the BBC team should treat her: "The passport, don't give it to her. You're her sponsor. Why would you give her her passport?"

In one case, the BBC team was offered a 16-year-old girl. It has called her Fatou to protect her real name.

Fatou had been trafficked from Guinea in West Africa and had been employed as a domestic worker in Kuwait for six months, when the BBC discovered her. Kuwait's laws say that domestic workers must be over 21.

Her seller's sales pitch included the facts that she had given Fatou no time off, her passport and phone had been taken away, and she had not allowed her to leave the house alone - all of which are illegal in Kuwait.

"What they are doing is promoting an online slave market," said Urmila Bhoola, the UN special rapporteur on contemporary forms of slavery.

"If Google, Apple, Facebook or any other companies are hosting apps like these, they have to be held accountable."

After being alerted to the issue, Facebook said it had banned one of the hashtags involved.

Google and Apple said they were working with app developers to prevent illegal activity.

This online slave market is not just happening in Kuwait.

In Saudi Arabia, the investigation found hundreds of women being sold on Haraj, another popular commodity app. There were hundreds more on Instagram, which is owned by Facebook.

The BBC team travelled to Guinea to try to contact the family of Fatou, the child they had discovered being offered for sale in Kuwait.

Every year hundreds of women are trafficked from here to the Gulf as domestic workers.

"Kuwait is really a hell," said one former maid, who recalled being made to sleep in the same place as cows by the woman who employed her. "Kuwaiti houses are very bad," said another. "No sleep, no food, nothing."

Fatou was found by the Kuwaiti authorities and taken to the government-run shelter for domestic workers. Two days later she was deported back to Guinea for being a minor.

She told the BBC about her experience working in three households during her nine months in Kuwait: "They used to shout at me and call me an animal. It hurt, it made me sad, but there was nothing I could do."

Now she is back at school in Conakry, where the BBC visited her.

"I am so happy," she said.

"Even now, talking about it, I'm still happy. My life is better now. I feel like I'm coming back from slavery."

The Kuwaiti government says it is "at war with this kind of behaviour" and insisted the apps would be "heavily scrutinised".

To date, no significant action has been taken against the platforms. And there has not been any legal action against the woman who tried to sell Fatou. The seller has not responded to the BBC's request for comment.

Since the BBC team contacted the apps and tech companies about their findings, 4Sale has removed the domestic worker section of its platform.

Facebook said it had banned the Arabic hashtag "خادمات للتنازل#" - which translates as "#maidsfortransfer".

"We will continue to work with law enforcement, expert organisations and industry to prevent this behaviour on our platforms," added a Facebook spokesman.

There was no comment from the Saudi commodity app, Haraj.

Google said it was "deeply troubled by the allegations".

"We have asked BBC to share additional details so we can conduct a more in-depth investigation," it added. "We are working to ensure that the app developers put in place the necessary safeguards to prevent individuals from conducting this activity on their online marketplaces."

Apple said it "strictly prohibited" the promotion of human trafficking and child exploitation in apps made available on its marketplace.

"App developers are responsible for policing the user-generated content on their platforms," it said.

"We work with developers to take immediate corrective actions whenever we find any issues and, in extreme cases, we will remove the app from the Store.

"We also work with developers to report any illegalities to local law enforcement authorities."

The firms continue to distribute the 4Sale and Haraj apps, however, on the basis that their primary purpose is to sell legitimate goods and services.

4Sale may have tackled the problem, but at the time of publication, hundreds of domestic workers were still being traded on Haraj, Instagram and other apps which the BBC has seen.

A Look at the Effects of Reciting the Qur’an in Comparison to Music

Music is a big part of our lives. It is a social trend, ever growing and popular worldwide. No doubt, you get constantly bombarded by music of all types – at shopping malls, high streets and open markets; jingles playing back-to-back on the radio, TV channels and the internet.

Nowadays, music also plays an explicit role in many educational settings and workplaces. If you are faced with such circumstantial contact with music, it could be a source of never-ending worry and stress. For many, however, especially the youth it could be a deliberate choice – living with music as nourishment and balm for the mind, body and soul.

It may be perceived as a harmless activity and a source of inner peace, relaxation, creativity and inspiration. After all if it doesn’t stop you from praying, fasting and performing good deeds, what is the big deal… right?

A Case of Parallels

I look back to a learning session a few years back. Our teacher explained that Qur’an and music can never thrive harmoniously in the heart of a believer. I struggled with this simple truth for many months afterwards. And it was such a big deal for me. Although I was learning to be a good Muslim, I continued feeding my desire albeit a negative one. This had grave consequences on my thoughts, acts of worship and lifestyle in general. I tried to think of a way to find a middle point with this seemingly parallel case. You could be faced with similar desires and inner battle right now.

‘Music or Qur’an?’

The Noble Qur’an needs no introduction. It is a mercy, guide and protection for mankind. It is also a powerful reminder, miracle and divine revelation. As the great scholar Ibn Qayyim said, “The Qur’an is all about tawheed”. And nothing should rank higher in terms of priority for the Muslim than upholding tawheed.

Music on the other hand is all about everything but tawheed. While you may still argue about the many benefits of music, I present you with 12 simple truths to ponder.

1. Origin
Qur’an: Speech of Allah .
Music: Created, reproduced and distributed by humans.

2.Theme
Qur’an: Tawheed (Oneness of Allah ), Aqeedah (creed), issues related to worship, eternal gains.
Music: The most common is lowly desires and worldly gains .

3. Benefit
Qur’an: 100% beneficial at all times, whether its being recited, listened to or pondered upon.
Music: Slight benefit for certain types and at certain times e.g., soothing music to calm down, motivational lyrics, etc.

4. Content
Qur’an: Related to success in this world and hereafter; also related to virtuous character, good deeds and worship.
Music: Related to acquiring success in this world only; also related to corrupt character, alcohol, drugs, carnal desires and suicide.

5. Calling
Qur’an: Invites to the sunnah, obedience, worship, guidance, good character, forgiveness, paradise.
Music: To a large extent, invites to sin and all things leading to possible sin (lowly desires, wealth, power, disbelief, nudity).

6.Goal
Qur’an: Remembrance of Allah .
Music: Distraction from remembrance of Allah .

7. Production and Replication
Qur’an: Has never been and cannot be produced. Allah challenged mankind in various verses to do so.
Music: Anyone can re/produce music. There are many courses, schools and experts dedicated to learning the art.

8. General Effect
Qur’an: Gives soothing internal effects that are long lasting and soul nourishing; long term feel-good-effect.
Music: Gives an external soothing effect that is temporary; short term feel-good-effect.

9. Effect on Soul
Qur’an: Pure nourishment for the soul through spiritual cleansing and purification.
Music: Junk food for the soul through lowering of spritual strength and draining the nafs.

10. Effect on Heart
Qur’an: Builds a sound heart, free of diseases.
Music: Increases diseases of the heart, from doubts to desires.

11. Lifestyle
Qur’an: Message can blossom subliminally into a positive lifestyle and a stable personality.
Music: Message can transform lifestyle into a negative one producing an unstable, corrupt personality.

12. Connection with Allah
Qur’an: Makes one develop a high degree of consciousness of Allah , taking one closer to Him.
Music: Brings about ‘gaflah’ (heedlessness) of Allah , increasing attraction to musicians.

Way Forward
The believer has a purpose driven life, seeking worldly good as well as eternal good. You may take various means and processes while seeking this good, striving to overcome your desires and remaining firm upon the truth. There is no doubt the Qur’an is the greatest personal development tool for mankind; driving self and spiritual growth, reinforcing the truth of tawheed, directing towards the fitrah and promoting self reflection.

”This is the Book about which there is no doubt, a guidance for those conscious of Allah” (Al Baqarah, 2:2)

The global music industry is worth billions of dollars and steadily increasing in revenue. Yet, they are busy innovating new ways to oppose the message of guidance by promoting music and musicians to such a high status, as a means of finding worldly success, happiness and inner peace. Don’t fall into heedlessness. Fight your nafs. And keep pondering these simple truths.

A guest received to holy prophet and he asked a Jew for loan. The Jew said: I swear to God that I won't lend you any sheep or camel because there is no guarantee to return. Prophet said: I am the Allah's trusty in the sky and the earth and if you make me a trusty on something, I will take it back to you. Then the holy prophet sent him a shield as a deposit. So this verse has revealed:

"And do not fix your eyes enviously on The bounties We have given to some of Them; these are the ornaments of this Worldly life by which We try or punish Them; but the spiritual sustenance of Your Creator and Nurturer is finer and Lasting"

Without doubt, we all depend on one another. We all have one or two debts to service which in turns create a great grief and sadness in to the heart. Therefore, it was recommended to say the following prayer in order to settle one's debts. May Allah settle our debts and provide for our needs.

اللَّهُمَّ إِنِّي أَعْوذُ بِكَ مِنَ الهَمِّ وَالْحَزَنِ، والعَجْزِ والكَسَلِ، والبُخْلِ والجُبْنِ، وضَلْعِ الدَّيْنِ وغَلَبَةِ الرِّجَالِ

Allaahumma 'innee 'a'oothu bika minal-hammi walhazani, wal'ajzi walkasali, walbukhli waljubni, wa dhala'id-dayni wa ghalabatir-rijaali.

O Allah, I seek refuge in You from grief and sadness, from weakness and from laziness, from miserliness and from cowardice, from being overcome by debt and from being overpowered by men

Thirteen-year-old Jericho Werrell escaped from a North Carolina courthouse on Tuesday ahead of an appearance in front of the judge concerning the double-murder case he's facing. Werrell escaped from the courthouse, barefoot and shackled. Authorities learned that Werrell had found a bike nearby and rode miles to a relative's house. He was found with his mother, Nikki Jacobs, on Wednesday night.

Werrell, along with this co-defendant Derrick Deshawn Hunt, 19, both face two counts of first-degree murder in the killings of two brothers.

The NC Department of Public Service confirmed that Werrell was in custody in Lumberton.

Two brothers, Frank Thomas and Adam Thomas, were found murdered in their home last month in Robeson County. Derrick Hunt, 19-years-old, and Werrell, were charged with both murders two days later.

Femi Fani-Kayode, former minister of aviation has revealed ten ways the Vice President, Yemi Osinbajo has been allegedly undermined by President Muhammadu Buhari.

DAILY POST reported that Osinbajo has been widely mocked since Kyari presented the amended Deep Offshore Act to Buhari in London on Monday.

Some Nigerians faulted the decision, saying that Osinbajo should have signed the bill, rather than Kyari taking a trip to London.

Nigerians have also posed questions about the function of the office of Osinbajo as Vice President.

Speaking on the development, Fani-Kayode, a social critic of Buhari’s administration highlighted 10 ways depicting how Osinbajo’s office has been victimized and undermined by Buhari.

The former minister on his Twitter page wrote:

“1. His helicopter crashed but instead of him to proceed to a hospital his boss asked him to continue sharing trader money.

2. A SAN and Prof. of Law, yet under him lawlessness is practiced: he deputises for a fellow who has no proof of both primary and secondary education.

3. They took a Bill to the United Kingdom for your boss to sign and publicised it to further humiliate you.

4. As an ERRAND boy, your boss sent a junior Minister to represent him in an event that you were present

5. A real ERRAND boy! They have removed all your aides from Aso Villa to a rented apartment in Maitama.

6. ERRAND boy, you went and knelt before Abba Kyari to stop the criminal investigation against you.

7.We told you this would happen but you refused to listen. Today, your two bosses, Tinubu and Buhari, are against you.

8.Sorry! With this latest humiliation of taking a document to an ailing man without recourse to you, it serves as a confirmation that you are now a certified ERRAND boy.

9. The latest is that your boss has now sacked 36 of your aides in your office. Are you waiting for them to lock you out of Aguda House before you resign and go back home to Ikenne?

10. We don’t pity you. You opted for it. While he’s in the United Kingdom he sent you to his village Daura to attend the turbaning/coronation of an unknown Chief. So sad! We pray you receive sense.”
