what the reviewers think:

1)
Achebe literary ability is unquestionable but this attempt at portraying hear says and his myopic opinions as factual belittles his achievements among the world literary giants and Nigerian polity. An excellent literary work but not to be taken seriously.
He came across as being xenophobic and try to blame the failure of his Igbo tribe on others. He needs to apologise to the upcoming generation for the failure of his generation. A tribalist to the core. What a shame that he will end being remember for his shallow mindedness, embittered old man. He needs to forgive himself and allow the old wound to heal.

2)
I grew up in Nigeria and only emigrated like so many others at the age of 14yrs after completing secondary school.

It was only in retrospect many years later that I noted a chasm in the knowledge of my own country by my ignorance of the circumstances of the Nigerian Civil war. This was not a wilful exercise as it had never been formally taught and actually was really never discussed in public discourse (at least while I was there).

My interest became kindled only when I discovered Chimamanda Ngozi Adchie after having read Half of a Yellow Sun - a wonderful story which occurred on a backdrop of the Nigerian Civil war. The description of the war in that book made me realise my woeful lack of knowledge about such an important event in my nation's history. Her account is all the more astonishing considering she was not even alive when this conflict was concluded.

I should probably state for the record that Chinua Achebe is one of my all time favourite authors - and not only for the oft quoted "Things Fall apart" (which has a deserved place as one of Africa's greatest novels) but also for a substantial body of work including Anthills of the Savannah and others. I have repeatedly said that he should be considered to be a recipient of a second Nobel Prize in Literature for Nigeria for the overall quality of his work.

One can imagine how giddy with excitement I became at discovering that a personal memoir of his recounting of the events of that period was about to be published. I pre-ordered my copy from the UK even though it was not yet available in Canada and had it shipped over. I have just completed reading it.

The preamble above is deliberately inserted so that my disappointment with this book can be placed in the appropriate context. My greatest disappointment is that a giant in literature such as Mr Achebe has written a book on such a delicate and sensitive subject to Nigerians without taking greater care to present a more balanced overview of the events he describes (see other reviews for more detailed critique). I can certainly understand he has a point of view having been an active participant in the unfortunate events at that time and having undergone many personal tragedies such as the loss of his friend Christopher Okigbo, but some of his statements border on the inflammatory especially his oft repeated remarks suggesting "superiority" of the Igbo ethnic group above others. In addition, he does not appear to find fault in the what appear to be obvious flaws and errors in the Igbo leadership strategy during the war e.g. invasion of Western territory, rejection of humanitarian aid, dubious application of the rule of low with summary executions etc and does not offer any serious critique of these "mis-steps".

In fact, my greatest critique of this book is that his account of the Biafran war provides less of a stirring emotional response than the fictional account by Chimamanda's version, which I think most who have read her work would agree, was not sensationalised. This is quite damning as he actually lived through those events and you would expect he would have been able to articulate and provide a reader with more of a feel of what it must have been like to live through those harrowing times in comparison with someone who wasn't even born at the conclusion of the conflict.

My disappointment with this book takes nothing away from Mr Achebe as one of the greatest African writers of all time given his body of work to date. I will think more fondly of his body of work if I conveniently edit this "memoir" from that list and remember the genius of his prose from prior to "There was a Country".

Chinua Achebe's reflection on the ill-fated Republic of Biafra could have been a good read but fell short in my opinion. As is to be expected, it is an intellectual exercise by the author full of his trade mark use of a mixture of his native language Igbo and a clear demonstration of his perfect use of English language. what I found disappointing is the lack of details of events in the book, for example, he did not give much details of his involvements, his activities and personal experience. the book lacked research evidence and detailed analysis using his personal experience to convey to the reader what really happened in the war and the role he played in it. It was almost as if he was telling a story that he heard from people who were there or took part. He failed to give details about the main characters or protagonist of the conflict notably Major kaduna Nzeogwu where he came from, his family and military background, Ifeajuna, Banjo, Ojukwu etc (he did a little bit that of Ojukwu. On the ingenuity of Biafrans and their inventions notebly the famous "Ogbunigwe" WMD, he started with an apology about his dislike for war and of being a man of peace. There was no reason for that, he is without a doubt a man of peace but one wanted to know more about the war and his reflection of it. He could have spoken about other inventions of the Biafrans such as how they refined petrol and made beer from cassava leaves etc., the role played by other Igbo people, and scientists, non intellectuals; what led to the disagreement between Ojukwu and Dr Nnamdi Azikiwe . In short, more details was expected by me from the book especially as I was only six years old when the war started and and an Igbo man myself, I would have loved to hear more and know more from someone who was there in person and a participant. I am a fan of Achebe, his style and simplicity of writing of and his intellect I also think that the book is somewhat one-sided in favour of the Igbos albeit that should be be expected. A good book nonetheless.

what do you expect her to do? carry a chainsaw and hack off her hubby's neck. the decision to take is not that easy - she's been married for 5 yrs. emphasis on marriage. obviously, she had indulged the hubby far too much for allowing him to abuse her at will but is that enough grounds for you to say she lacks self esteem? how much do you know the poster to conclude she suffers from low self esteem?

Sincere 9gerian: I'v read thru some comments and seen the argument go back and forth. This arguement can continue forever with no side willing to admit anything. However, two factors VINDICATE the Igbos and Achebe.
nothing vindicates the igbos/achebe!

1)One is the ROT that Nigeria is today. With the loose federal structure(the Aburi Accord) proposed by Ojukwu would have made Nig see much more progress
33.33% of the rot that nigeria is today is caused by ndigbos.....so what's your point?

2) the fact that Nig will sooner or later disintegrate to pieces
it would never happen. 500 yrs from now, your great great grandsons would be wondering when nigeria would break up.

Awo was a tribal leader of some sort so to the eye of the average easterner, it would mean that. But that doesn't necessarily mean it's true. At least we'll never know that. That's why it's a personal opinion. That's something you guys have to deal with.

Even my mum came all the way from Nigeria to plead with him here in England to stop spitting on me. Anytime I call my mum about this matter, she would start crying saying my husband is laying a curse on me and nothing good will come out of me if he continues.

I am losing interest in this marriage because there is no hope that he would ever change.I do not think any normal man would spit on his dog,let alone his wife.
He says he sees me as a poo at that moment and that his why he does it.HE is the type that loses his temper easily and would do nasty thing, which he later regrets .He is a forty year old man,who has refused to grow up.

afam4eva: And what's the truth, Mr Truthella. It's only when it comes from your mouth or the mouth of your tribesmen that it's the truth, right?
the truth is - had ojukwu taken the offer of the peace meeting, the war would have been averted. what's the point of going to war when dialogue is an option. after losing 3 million of his own people, they still went back to dialogue. so why not take the option and keep 3 million people alive, huh?

even with that, ojukwu was forgiven by the federal government. in most countries, he would have been banished from his own land. he was given a royal welcome from his asylum in abidjan. instead of achebe to thank the government for burying the hatchet, achebe went on a boring diatribe riddled with porkies!

achebe knows what the truth is.....why lie to score cheap brownie points? he had a rare chance to put this matter to bed. he had a rare opportunity to encourage nigeria's unity with his outstanding penmanship but he is still beating the drums of war and stoking the fire of bigotry/tribalism!

afam4eva: Don't put words into Achebe's mouth. he has written his war memoir the way he saw and perceived it. You guys should write your own.
only a lunatic would type the drivel you just did up there.
achebe is a professor - he should know better than concocting lies to denigrate the other tribes in nigeria. he would have gotten away with it 20 yrs ago when there's no medium for people to air their opinions but in this day and age, he fücked up big time! he knew the truth but it's like he has a personal score to settle with awolowo. achebe should win this award by a country mile for shredding his own legacy. a bloody attention seeker!

afam4eva: Saying it was Ojukwu's fault will be looking at it in plain black and white. Don't forget the reason why Ojukwu decided to declare Biafra in the first place. I'm not saying Ojukwu is totally right for declaring Biafra at the time that he did. maybe if it was someone else, he would have done things a little bit differently. Now, we're not talking about Ojukwu's fault and Awolowo's good samatarian disposition before the war. This is strictly about the policy of starvation. let's stick to that.
ojukwu was just a spoilt kid
without a doubt, another leader would have calculated the risks of going to war to the last contingency. ojukwu was so blood-thirsty and the fact that he ran when biafra surrendered shows his cowardice.

Nobody has named Awolowo as the sole character responsible for the war. Only myopic minds would even think so. Many of you have also forgotten that Gowon was also mentioned in that Memoir but no one is talking about it.Immiediately you guys just saw AWO's name you just started singing "Kill am, catch am, die" without even going through the whole book. Some other characters both non-Igbos and Igbos alike have also been blamed one way or the other about the war but you won't see that. It's only the one about Awo that tickles your fancy.
yes - it tickled my fancy.
awolowo made frantic efforts to stop the war - it's a crying shame that his name is being mentioned as one of the culprits that allowed the genocide of the igbos. that war would have continued and more lives would have been lost had awolowo not stopped the aid destined for biafra. the hunger of 2-3 days did not kill 3 million people. the events before then was the major cause of death - the question here should be: why did ojukwu go to war when he had no arrangement for arms and relief aid?
Politics › Re: Why Is Prof Achebe's Name On NL Hall Of Shame? by coogar: 10:24pm On Dec 23, 2012
afam4eva: I don't know why some of you just lack common sense. I don';t think anyone has said Awolowo never reached out to the est and advised them not to go to war. That's not the point. Obviously, Ojukwu and the east defied the advise and went ahead to declare Biafra(now war). Now, we're talking about Awo's hand during the war and not before the war. Address that and stop moving goal post.
so you agree that it was ojukwu's fault that he refused the offer given to him on a platter of gold and sent ill-prepared igbo sons to a senseless war? awo's hand during the war was a different matter entirely. an offer was made for ojukwu to open a road corridor so aid could reach the suffering masses, ojukwu refused. ojukwu wanted an air corridor instead and the plane must travel in the night(his cheap attempt to smuggle more arms to fight the federal government)!

besides, awolowo and many others were already tired of the pictures of kwashiorkor kids. the only way to stop that war quickly was to stop feeding biafra - mind, people had died before awolowo's tactical approach so i don't see how awolowo was solely responsible for the death of 3 million people - ojukwu was responsible for all that!

Politics › Re: Why Is Prof Achebe's Name On NL Hall Of Shame? by coogar: 9:53pm On Dec 23, 2012
ballabriggs: That is a freaking lie. Awo had such an ambition. Before and after the first coup, there was a "we against them mentality" in the country. It was not and never limited to the Yoruba people alone. The North had that mentality and same with the east.
you are a tool - before the first coup, the igbos weren't contented with how the brits left the country in the hands of the hausa/fulanis. the first coup was plotted by mainly igbo soldiers and they targeted hausa/fulani officers. the fulanis retaliated with pogroms which anyone would have predicted in a young country like nigeria. the igbos felt cheated especially when the federal government didn't do anything tangible to stop the mass killings of the igbos especially in the north - and the igbos sought secession. how does this have anything to do with awolowo?

It was a mentality of hate built by selfish politicians including Awo. You cannot exonerate him from those events. So some of you here coming to accuse the man of being a bigot without an understanding of the environment at the time are absolutely daft.
stop smoking your pubic hair.....
the single most important fact is ojukwu could have averted that war. gowon even made last minute arrangements to do a peace talks with ojukwu in a foreign land. he was ready to meet all the conditions tendered by ojukwu but he still refused to take the option. the problem with ojukwu was that he's a spoilt kid - he saw himself as too superior to gowon to respect gowon's issues. he put his ego before 3 million igbos and sent them to their deaths!

ballabriggs: That is the problem with most of you. You do not sound like someone who has read the book. You just hear Awo's name being mentioned and you spring up. Did Achebe ever state that Awo never made such visits?

Go and read the book and read it properly with an open mind before typing your trash here. Achebe may have gotten some things wrong but one thing you cannot deny is the fact that Awo had an ambition and he went about it playing the tribal card. It is not different from what we see in today's politics.
oh shut up - have you read the book yourself?
awo had no such ambition - awolowo wasn't the one that refused to take the offer of a corridor to send relief aid to the starving biafrans. ojukwu was offered $600,000 by the british government which he also refused! ojukwu used the pictures of the kwashiorkor kids to build a propaganda so the rest of the world can sympathise with them but the plan backfired!

achebe until now was respected by every nigerian but he kinda crossed the line when he blamed awolowo for the genocide in biafra. there were several opportunities presented that could have averted the war but ojukwu simply wanted the war. ojukwu was a selfish man and he put his ego before his own people - too bad!

i have read achebe's book inside out and to say his account was biased is an understatement. he told several lies in the book - how the village mad man took the chalk from his teacher and lectured his class on the geography of nigeria. how his mum was nearly lynched by villagers because she plucked kolanut from the tree(a sacrilege in igbo land) and several other tales by moonlight!
