if you're a Christian from the south in the north and a religious violence took place and you decide to seek for shelter, how do you differentiate a a Christian from the multitude of Muslims there to seek for shelter, considering that you will want to seek shelter from a fellow Christian and you realize that they all speak the same language and they dress the same?
even if it's not a religious violence let's say a North south riots.

I am from Plateau State.

However, telling Muslims apart from Christians is easy when you have lived amidst them.

For starters, Christians and Muslims live in separate areas in most northern cities, as far as I know. There's that consciousness. So when a fight breaks out, you know what area to run towards.

Also, I wouldn't say they dress the same. The Muslims are always in kaftans, while the Christians wear kaftans almost only on Sundays or during special occasions. On other days, you'd find them on Ts and jeans/chinos - just like you would a southerner. There isn't much difference.

There are Muslims who prefer simple wears though, and so dress just like the christians do. They dress in T-shirts/shirts and jeans/chinoses. I've found the rich mallos to be many in this class.

That's why mode of dressing isn't exactly a reliable way to tell them apart. But when you see violent people on approach, you'd know, shey? It's easy.

When in a muslim-dominated area, run to old men. They will never let anyone lynch you, unless if they are the sort of old men that do not command respect. Regardless what, there'll be sane ones among them who will defend you.

The Hausa/Fulani Muslims are not all as bad as they are being portrayed. Only a few of them are that cruel. But you know how bad things make the news faster.

They remain the most friendly and accommodating tribe in Nigeria.

It's just that some of their youths are too volatile.

I have had experiences with them as well. So I cannot wait on someone from the SS to influence my opinion of them.

The Igbos that I know are good people and are progressive.

These same people contribute more to their various states of residence than about 50% of the indigenes can - and that's putting it mildly.

If not for the backward minds of most Nigerians, we wouldn't be talking about state of origin in this age. State of residence would have been more like it.

Imagine being in state A all your life and then one day, someone wakes up and tells you to pack back to your home state?

And still whether you like it or not Jos is a northern region, when Yakubu Gawon was milltary president he was called a Northerner. Geographically you are a northerner but your culture might differ.

plateau people have so much in common with southern Borno and some part of Adamawa and taraba.

Even if I were an unbeliever, why should that matter to anyone?

In Plateau, there's freedom of religion. We don't stone people for refusal to go to church. There's tolerance and understanding. That's something the people up north lack. And that, right there is the number one and most important difference between the average middle belter and those of you further north.

You must understand that differences aren't always expressed in geographical terms only. And even if we factored that in, it'd be about the only similarity there is between Plateau people and northerners.

Other than that, the mentality is different, as are religious beliefs, thoughts, cultures, upbringing, and everything else.

Those places you mentioned are Christian localities. So it does not come to me as a surprise because I know that already. The mentality is always the same amongst Christians irrespective of where they are from. There's tolerance, understanding, brotherliness, and clarity of purpose.

Do not take this to mean I'm undermining Muslims in any way.

I respect them. But there's a gulf between us as far as similarities go.

We are not the same people.

One's religion does not determine their region.

I am aware that there are Christians in all states of the north. I know this for a fact.

I have both Christian and Muslim friends from States like Katsina, Jigawa, Yobe, Borno, Adamawa, Gombe, Kebbi, Sokoto, Kano, etc.

There's no unfinished business with the Hausa/Fulani resident in Jos. Fighting is a thing of the past, which I pray does not happen ever again.

I am friends with many Hausa/Fulani people in Jos even to this day. I don't have anything against them. I respect them like I would every other person.

However, culturally, we have nothing in common with the core north, truth be told. They even refer to us as arnaye. I'm sure you know what that means.

Just like Adamawa state there are alot of minorities every LGA have different tribe sometimes one LGA are shared by 2 or 3 tribes. But yola the state capital is dominated by fulani and we still refer Adamawa state as fulani state same goes to Gombe.

The Hausas in Jos are settlers, just like the Igbos and Yorubas. They are mainly Hausa of Bauchi origin who came for commercial activities in the city.

You don't see the Yoruba or Igbos claiming to be originally from Jos. But with you people, it's always the opposite.

berom is the majority in plateau state, tiv is the majority is Benue, igala is the majority in kogi, eggon is the majority in nasarawa, Hausa is not a majority in kwara state. You can't come and twist fact because it doesn't suit your desire.

Go to jos the first language you will hear when you set your foot is hausa same goes to Nasarawa, Niger and some part of kogi.

The remaining 2 are Benue and kwara even thou kwara state have fulani as their emir and alot in common with the northern culture only the language differs.
