Someone has been let out of the pen. Last I checked this is an African military thread. It is somewhat convenient for you and your ilk to sing hullabaloo when all evidence points to the contrary, this platform therefore becomes veritable to not only disprove but fact check. I have no obsession whatsoever other than objective discourse for the good of Africa. Jealousy is a stretch because Nigeria is the only real hegemon in Africa therefore South Africa does not exist in mind as any more than an important African country we need to do well.

Instead of dissipating your energy arguing blindly use it to agitate for the SANDF to be restored to a fighting machine rather than cheerleaders at every national show deceiving and being deceived. Funding is not an excuse. We have heard that diatribe for too long. It all boils down to inept command leadership from the start. You went shopping for shiny toys you couldn't maintain against the advice of all and sundry both in Africa and beyond telling you South Africa has no external threat whatsoever from any country after Apartheid.

Even your own intelligentsia in South Africa concurs with my submissions. Until you tell yourselves the truth you will only exist on paper. How can you even still argue with a straight face and no shame. You have only 3 hawks, 4 AHs and 1 warship right now to defend South Africa and you are still here ranting.

You think we expected you to deploy anything reasonable in Mozambique, no! We knew you can't deploy what you don't have. The Brass would have told Ramaphosa doing so means no AHs or fast jets even if subsonic to defend the land in an emergency. The 3 hawks you flew at your State of the Union are the only air air-worthy fighter aircrafts you have, what a shame for a once proud force and you think it makes anyone happy. US Ambassador to Nigeria Mary Beth Leonard and Brigadier General Thomas Tickner visited 407 Air Combat Training group Kainji (ACTG) for the ground breaking of the final phase of the $38 million construction project for the A-29 Super Tucanos’ support facilities.

The site will house several critical facilities including sunshades for the the A-29 Super Tucanos, munitions assembly and storage areas, and an annex for the A-29 flight simulator. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) North Atlantic Division is overseeing the construction.

We in Nigeria accepted our short comings and worked extensively to reverse it. For years we were pilloried by the Southies even if we had the commensurate strength but we admitted the lack of capacity and requisite capabilities for CT/COIN that needed to be acquired hence we invested heavily such as doling out half a billion dollars for 4th Gen. dedicated CT/COIN Super Tucano Aircrafts. The Nigerian military was essentially a conventional army designed to close with, engage and destroy the enemy and more broadly to conquer and capture capitals of nation states but not for a jihadi war. It took years but we are now reaping the results of investment in CT/COIN assets and training and also extended those investments to more robust conventional capabilities.

So the BHT war became a blessing in disguise. But first we had to sound the alarm that something needed to be done. This is what Southies here blinded by patriotism should do not gallivant to the gallery when their house is on fire. Essentially we no longer have a viable defence partner down South. Nigeria cannot throw its military power around everywhere you need defence partners. It will take 5 to 10 years for the SANDF to modestly baulk up capabilities again at this rate of free fall.

A free fall on all sides. In fact some SANDF establishments have had their electricity cut for lack of funds. If President Ramaphosa arguably the most pragmatic of all their ANC presidents so far will do nothing then this obsolete trend of the SANDF is irreversible except the DA comes to power in Pretoria. It's a shame what has become of the SANDF and how they come up in Africa's top ten must be by some form of voodoo magic. An Air Force that flies only 5,000 hours a year can not be taken seriously. In fact Tanzania has a more robust military and should make that list. No one talks of Ethiopia anymore because the war there has exposed their underbelly something objective observers knew all along. Equipment holdings alone does not suffice. Something I have articulated for years. Rwanda is an example of men over machines.

The SANDF has been declared sitting ducks. Urgent Presidential intervention needed.

I don't see anything coming out of it.

President Buhari has only one year left on his presidency. Except he wants to leave a robust foreign policy legacy other than his one diplomatic and military intervention in The Gambia I doubt his advisers will want him to rock the boat in any way with what might turn out to be a costly foreign intervention. It is clear the President is already shifting some difficult policy issues to his successor in office.

Ecowas is a voluntary union of countries. Decisions are taken by consensus. The chairman of ecowas does not take decisions and impose it on member countries. Decisions are reached by consensus. every country has one vote. whatever majority countries decide, the chairman will implement.

You forgot that Ghana led the Ecomog forces that first landed in Monrovia in 1990? Today, nobody even talks about Ghana's contributions in ecowas. it is all about nigeria nigeria nigeria. The same nigeria that undermined Ghanaian Ecomog Force Commander General Quaynor. I was part of the ecomog troops that first landed at the Free port in Monrovia. Immediately the landing was successful, nigeria started scheming to take over from the Ghanaian General. And later they turned around to accuse General Quaynor of being weak. Damn hipocrites.

Nigeria is doing the same thing in Ecowas under Ghana's leadership. Nigeria is working tirelessly to undermine Ghana's leadership of Ecowas. I don't even know what or how countries benefit from this nonsense Ecowas. Left to me, Ghana should even pull out of Ecowas. It is a very useless organisation. Do you know how much Ghana spends on Ecowas? And yet you Nigerians don't even appreciate Ghana's contributions. This is soo annoying.

Sorry to bust your bubble but it is not "nonsense talk" to say Ghana's leadership of ECOWAS is weak. It is self-evident for all to see. Other than your President's English grammar which appears more of liking to hear himself speak to remind everyone he was in England, there is no assertiveness to his leadership.

Nigeria is ECOWAS. "He that pays the piper dictates the tune". Nigeria doesn't need ECOWAS it is Ghana that does but yes ECOWAS is important for West Africa and for Nigeria from a geo-political perspective. Ghana has more relevance with ECOWAS than without it like your current leadership which puts it on the map. Nigeria however will remain relevant with or without ECOWAS. A manifest destiny.

The Nigerian president don't need to attend all meetings especially outside Abuja because his presence commands weight behind any issue under deliberation meaning expectations become very high. His presence sends signals one way or another. A democratic Nigerian President will not stoop low to sit with putschists except if necessary to compel them to vacate power. It's a steep in protocol. You have to understand Nigeria's history of military rule and dictatorships which is abhorred in Nigeria to comprehend that. A State Governor in Nigeria controls more budget than most of those Presidents attending meetings in Accra.

The Nigerian President not attending is an opportunity for President Nana Akufo-Addo to shine rather all he does is speak English. Nigeria cleverly don't want to stand in the way.

You should be grateful you have our Vice-President attending though prestigious with the paraphernalia given it by the presidency in Abuja is not actually worth much in Nigeria politically except for things like this or attending funerals, generally representing the President of Nigeria in not so strategic matters.

Have you seen a US president attending all NATO meetings. Not at all. In fact it's on record in the days of President Olusegun Obasanjo he stormed out of meetings with other ECOWAS leaders and they still differed to him. In fact they scurried to Abuja whenever he called an emergency meeting on any issue. They needed him not the other way round. President John Kuffour then was always in Abuja like an errand boy. He owed his presidency to Abuja. If it was not for Nigeria Jerry Rawlings of blessed memory "wasn't going to hand over".

In international relations nations are not equals. Nations are respected real or perceived to the degree of their national power output be it industrial, economic, cultural, human/natural resources and military prowess not for their languages. You are not seriously deluded to think Ghana commands any significant weight in any of those categories. Ghana is a fine country. A country Nigeria respects for its rich heritage and people. However it is too small a country to command any weight except to be used as a pun in the game of geo-political power play against Nigeria to massage the egos of the big powers and multinational corporations outside of Africa.

Lagos State alone is the economy of at least 35 African countries combined Ghana included. So there's just no way Ghana can compete. Nigeria does not undermine Ghana, never has and never will. Nigeria does not need Ghana to shine but it does need Ghana like any other country for its people and huge economy.

It is not necessary to speak about Ghana's command of ECOMOG. If you are a soldier you should know better and not be silly and petty about Nigeria taking over command. The Ghanaian command was simply incompetent. It had no air cover, it lacked the men, material and equipment to hold and to advance. It's a non-starter to argue. Be grateful to Nigeria.

This is a recipe for disaster. I can't emphasize enough one of the responsibilities of the President of Nigeria is foreign policy. The Federal Government of Nigeria is a very powerful entity with enormous political, diplomatic and military muscle to demand events go it's way both at home and in the near abroad. Nigeria has enormous force holdings it hasn't even deployed. There's no too busy the President is to overlook foreign policy except lack of foresight. If Nigeria demanded Asimi Goita step down with a no-fly zone over the entire current coup landscape in West Africa he would step down. I repeat this would never have happened under Obasanjo. Occupying the office is one thing and having the right democratic personality on the seat is another.

That singular phone of Mr. President today to Guinea Bissau is a body language another would be putschists would seriously consider.

The Republic of Ghana other than the speaking of fine Queens English lacks the diplomatic finesse, weight, financial and military muscle to make anyone in Mali, Guinea or Burkina Faso pay attention.

Everyone expects Nigeria to always pick up the baton everytime but since the ECOMOG wars that cost over a billion dollars and in which some 1000 Nigerian servicemen perished bringing peace, stability and democracy to Liberia and Sierra Leone including having permanent combat troops on Standby in Guinea Bissau, successive Nigerian Presidents since Obasanjo have shied away from taking leadership roles in the African Union and ECOWAS knowing doing so heaps a lot of pressure on Abuja to intervene with the full weight of its diplomatic and military power in any crises. The expectation has been that established institutions will hold the forte and everyone will play by the rules but sadly the world has never worked that way.

So far Ghana has not fully deferred to Nigeria in its chairmanship of ECOWAS like Liberia did under Ellen Johnson Sirleaf's tenure as ECOWAS chair during The Gambian imbroglio which saw Nigeria effectively taking over the airspace of The Gambia, funding and galvanizing regional military deployments to its border which saw the flight into exile in Equatorial Guinea and political oblivion of erstwhile strongman His Excellency President Sheikh Prof. Dr. Alhaji Yahya Jemmus Junkung Jammeh.

UN Names Nigeria’s Maj. Gen. Sawyer UNISFA Force Commander

New Force Commander, UNISFA, Major General Benjamin Olufemi Sawyerr

The United Nations Secretary-General, António Guterres, has announced the appointment of Maj. General Benjamin Sawyerr of Nigeria as the Force Commander for the United Nations Interim Security Force for Abyei, UNISFA.

This was confirmed Tuesday, 1 February, 2022 by Air Commodore WM Maigida, the immediate past Acting Director of Defence Information while handing over to Major General Jimmy Akpor who, on Friday, took over as the new Director of Defence Information.

TheFact Nigeria reports that UNISFA is a United Nations peacekeeping force in Abyei, and was approved on 27 June 2011 by the United Nations Security Council in United Nations Security Council Resolution 1990 after a flareup in the South Kordofan conflict earlier in June 2011.

Abyei is an area of 10,546 km2 on the border between Sudan and South Sudan that had been accorded “special administrative status” by the 2004 Protocol on the Resolution of the Abyei Conflict (Abyei Protocol) in the Comprehensive Peace Agreement (CPA) that ended the Second Sudanese Civil War.

Sawyerr, who takes over from Major Gen. Kefyalew Amde Tessema of Ethiopia, has a military career spanning more than 34 years with the Nigerian Army, including serving as the Director of Defence Information of Nigeria’s Defence Forces since 2021.

Erstwhile Commandant of the Nigerian Army Armour School in Bauchi State, North-East Nigeria between 2020 and 2021, the new UNISFA Force Commandant held the position of Brigade Commander twice in North-East Nigeria. He was also Commanding Officer of the Nigerian Battalion with the United Nations Mission in Liberia between 2009 and 2010.

Sawyerr also served as the Director of Plans at the Nigerian Army Headquarters between 2019 and 2020, and Deputy Director of Doctrine and Combat Development from 2017 to 2018.

He holds a Bachelor’s degree in Political Science from Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria in Nigeria and a Masters in Defence and Strategic Studies from the University of Madras in India.
