President Muhammadu Buhari has stated that he suspects international groups that want to destroy Nigeria are behind the plight of Boko Haram we have faced, adding that it is fraudulent even by the name given to the terror group.

President Muhamamdu Buhari has attributed Nigeria’s insecurity problem to powerful countries bent on destroying Nigeria.

This video has DSS agents crawling all over the place and shows him the lead detail organising the presidential candidates overall security with even more DSS agents pouring in with the arrival of the vice-presidential candidate all packing and exchanging side-arms. Apparently the protocol is to be handed lethal weapons on the threat and detail site, I would presume with armour piercing rounds. It's a no go area.

85k is really a huge number assuming there are more that are yet to surrender , the actual number of combatants maybe is around 100 k + ...Thats like another army.

Indeed a huge number. Most people had no clue what the Nigerian Army was really up against. In reality it was like fighting a people because a majority of its combatants were of the Kanuri tribe which you find up North-East of Nigeria. Military intelligence estimated a majority of the Kanuri tribe was directly or indirectly for Boko Haram prior to now.

Boko Haram was a standing army at the height of its madness and then throw in the international dimension of ISWAP, foreign and local funding and the collapse of Libya. While the military has contained and taken the bite out of BHT/ISWAP I can project only a kinetic approach won't solve this long term.

The Federal Government would need to bring out a comprehensive carrot approach of some sort of amnesty which already exists in one form or another to deal with the combatants still in hiding at the least the Boko haram part of the insurgency then turn them against ISWAP. No military can kill everybody.

I'll be honest with you. The Nigerian president is not viewed as important as his South African counterpart. Cyril Ramaphosa is more powerful on the international scene than Buhari. Ramaphosa has more powerful meetings and gets more lobbied than Buhari.

However, the most powerful Head of State in Africa is by a huge gap, the President of Egypt -El Sisi-. Egypt controls close to half the movement of the worlds shipping via the Suez Canal. Egypt has the largest population of the Arab world and possesses the most powerful military in the Middle east and Africa combined.

Your view remains just that your views and in your parlour not a reflection of geo-political reality nor the view of a college of scholars. You might want to start by telling us what powerful meetings Ramaphosa has that Buhari even with his docile foreign policy does not exceed. Even if a toad sits in Aso Rock he'd exceed by influence any Southie president.

There are metrics for relevance such as trade, GDP, natural resource, output and military and some of the major countries or unions of the world has Nigeria as their largest trading partner. Difference must be made between bilateral and multilateral relationships.

In the case of South Africa a part of their economy (the white economy) is tied to the west. So naturally the western press plays up the relevance of South Africa but in reality they are only tolerated just because they don't want another Zimbabwe to happen to their people their. The ANC or at least some of its elements understands this position of things.

When it comes to Africa only Nigeria commands the loyalty of some African countries in ways that South Africa can't and never will. The world knows that and the lobby to influence African capitals is in Abuja not in Pretoria, this is the reality owing to a whole lot of factors. In fact right now presently the Nigerian Air Force currently controls all of the Air Space of The Gambia and the State House of some African countries. That is real power.

Except for old Europe the US sees Nigeria as Africa's most important country and hence its president same for China. For the middle East and Israel it sees Egypt. South Africa has yet to unravel and God forbid it does it might cease to exist if the local indigenes decide to take back their lands majority owned by the whites. This is what the UK and old Europe courts. This is the optics you saw on TV with Ramaphosa meeting the King of England or at any western fora. On the other hand Nigeria has sovereignty over its lands and its mineral rich deposits 100% and takes no dictates from any foreign power or anyone something which the west abhors.

Wake up, what have you been drinking. Don't watch too much CNN, France24 or BBC all of which are geared for a skewed narrative against Africa's realities and potentials. Egypt had no leverage over Ethiopia or Sudan over the Nile. Its influence though limited begins and stops in the middle East. Having shiny guns by itself does not make you reckoned with especially if the sovereignty of those acquisitions are suspect such as funding from Saudi Arabia.

Nigeria is Africa's only hegemonic regional power and its president carries that clout.

An African leader attending a G7 summit is in real terms only a photo Op. Every Nigerian President has attended a G7 Summit and merely chooses to defer to any current AU Chair. And Nigerian presidents are the first African leader any US president calls for a visit to the White House. Beyond that we in Nigeria see these things are puppeteer stunts and actually drive to lead on our own terms in multileratel Organizations.

Here see Nigeria's president Muhammadu Buhari for whom the new State House in Guinea Bissau would be named after including the major street leading up to the palace. And so much more like that abounds in other African countries. In fact Nigeria directly controls some State Houses and Defence HQs.

I don't think we need an Attack Submarine to be honest. However the Nigerian Navy should invest in Frigates and Corvettes as this is a capability that we have completely lost over the years.

There's been significant investment in our maritime security capabilities which is to be expected, but I think we should strike a balance between that and proper strike capabilities.

Everywhere you look in Nigeria, there's an OPV sailing. This is not the right approach for the long haul.

I also fear that governments after this might not have the political will to make the necessary investments required to take the Nigerian army to the next level.

Late President Yar'adua and former President Jonathan were abysmal looking back at the procurements they made.

Former President OBJ was really no better.

We hope someone in the mould of President Shehu Shagari of blessed memory will win the elections. Apartheid South Africa that was armed to the teeth at the time and an existential threat to Ngeria then as the major power behind resistance movements has ceased to exist which some believe informed some of those acquisitions which at the time boasted Africa's most powerful Frigate, biggest army and proactive foreign policy.

The current docility in pragmatic Afrocentric foreign policy by Abuja can be traced directly to President Buhari [who was known hitherto to have no foreign policy inclinations] and to some extent the party in power. President Buhari regardless can be credited to having done better for the Armed Forces and the police especially the Air Force than all presidents of recent memory. Perhaps his procurements have been based on the advice of his NSA and the Chief of Defence Staff [CDS]

However one can never fault the fact President Obasanjo bestrode the land and Africa with flamboyance during his two term presidency including deporting to exile in Calabar a sitting Head of State of another country. President Obasanjo went to Togo and insisted the son of a former president must go through elections and got his way against France. In his first installment as Head of State he refused to meet with a US Secretary of State until his demands were met which saw President Jimmy Carter visit him in person in Lagos. He captured a foreign rebel leader and sent him to detention in Lagos. He tamed Asari Dokubo a Niger Delta War Lord and his militia for the rest of his life. He invaded Odi and almost wiped it out of living memory for the killing of some soldiers. No one dared the kinds of things going on today in the name of agitations both at home and abroad. President Obasanjo led. Personalities do matter which help drive the impact of institutions.

The conversation though continues to change as democracy advances which puts these issues in the public space allowing civil society, the foreign policy and intelligence community to drive the military and foreign policy ambitions of current & future administrations.

The Chief of the Air Staff (CAS), Air Marshal Oladayo Amao, on Friday 20 January 2023 said the Nigerian Air Force (NAF) has operationalized the usage of all its new and modern platforms towards tackling terrorism and insurgency in the country. Speaking during an operational visit to the Nigerian Air Force Institute of Safety and 209 Quick Response Group, Ipetu-Ijesa, Osun State, the CAS stated that these new and modern air assets are instrumental in the feats being recorded against terrorists and insurgents. Air Marshal Amao, attributed the successes recorded by the NAF in the theatres of operation to the newly acquired JF-17 Thunder aircraft, A-29 Super Tucano aircraft and the Unmanned Combat Aerial Vehicles.

The CAS revealed that the NAF is expecting the delivery of additional new platforms which the President has approved for the Service.
The air assets, according to him, include: 2 Beechcraft King Air 360, 4 Diamond DA-62 surveillance aircraft, 3 Wing Loong II UCAVs and 6 T-129 ATAK helicopters.

He further disclosed that there are ongoing acquisitions of 12 Agusta 109 Trekker multi-role helicopters and 24 M-346 attack aircraft.
He added that some of these additional platforms are expected to be delivered to the NAF before the end of first quarter 2023. This, he said would further boost NAF’s air power employment and projection capabilities as well as air combat training.

While I see the benefits of additional OPVs, our Navy seems to be too fixated on this sort of maritime security capabilities.

I find this disturbing as we are making the same mistakes we made during the initial years of insurgency.

We should expand to other areas, we cannot be buying hundreds of patrol vessels each year.

I was hoping that we would be looking at Frigates & Coverttes in the coming years, not additional OPVs after we secured the Dearsan contract.

Someone need to start asking these questions publicly and demand answers on what military planners are thinking. Methinks the oil theft is still an existential crisis for the purse of the nation and the hierarchy of command is simply responding to task however I agree we might just be making the same mistakes of the past not preparing for the worst eventualities. A compliment of sea going missile ships, A Frigate & submarines for strategic deterrence in the Gulf of Guinea is long over due. The electorate and the informed should escalate the need to those currently running for president of Nigeria.

That's some serious stuff being acquired by junta dictator Assimi Goita ostensibly for the fight against terrorists but in reality for regime preservation as its with all unelected usurpers of power. His trained special forces eye is gleaned on ECOWAS and a potential invasion.

Clearly that guy continues to dig in from the start and exported his putschists credentials to Burkina Faso and now Guinea with backing of of no less Wagner elements and the Kremlin. Shouldn't have been allowed to happen, one of the failures of President Buhari's foreign policy in the West Africa sub-region & Africa in general except for The Gambia. Mali must be reined in.
