We can have a timeline for that and if he refuses to budge we can take out key elements that make the military and society function. Short of that an outright invasion by 2 × battalion of mechanized infantry battalion and 1 × Special Forces Unit preferably SBS. BlackBaron:I beg to disagree with the term "grandstanding" in the event of a military intervention in Guinea to restore constitutional democracy. We've been here before in our history. I don't know how old you are but some of us bore the brunt of military misrule in Nigeria. And whilst none of us wants to leave pressing matters at home to go fight any foreign war at this point in time the circumstances are just too dangerous to look away. It is in our national interest and security to do something immediately about Guinea, Mali and speed up the political calendar in Chad. It is irresponsibility and criminality for someone to usurp power just because he holds the gun whatever the sins of who is in power. Just look at the diatribe of this so called special forces soldiers in power now in Mali and Guinea anything different from coupists in the past. They get there and make a mess. MAN1960:Don't mind them ooo, they'd look for anything to look relevant. Simply put to cut long story short. People matter in warfare. Brains matter. In strategic military thinking the whole concept of what makes a nation is factored into going to war: the population size, number reaching military age and fit to fight, industrial capacity, oil; a critical factor, external support both political, diplomatic, economic and military and many more even things as little as paved roads if you consider that little which is not exactly because in a high intensity warfare they double as runway for fighter jets. In a nutshell human and material resources of a nation make and decide wars. That's the power behind the machines, equipments, weapons & technology. So as much as quality, quantity also matters depending on context in which it is debated. China may not yet have empirical military status as being more powerful than the US but it is a peer power and has enough deterrent to dissuade the US from daring any foolish war. 5 Likes |

MAN1960:The Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Abuja has already made a statement. But it is not enough. They have to include that element of force if necessary. The situation is still fluid perhaps that's why. The foreign minister Onyema should be in Conakry immediately or the Ambassador to deliver that warning in person. NIA, DSS, DIA are all working overtime and yet they continue to undermine and undercut us one way or the other. kabe1:It was a fait accompli after the coup in Mali especially after the second one. It was going to become a problem. Should never have been allowed to stand under whatever guise. The young man in Mali has set the path for every Special Forces officer in these tiny republics to seek power for themselves. And why always US trained ones. Something stinks. Anywhere they go problem like Afghanistan. That said you nailed it. The greed for power is the root cause. Leaders should stick to term limits. When legitimacy is eroded ECOWAS has a problem to intervene at least morally. ECOWAS should put mechanisms in place barring leaders from exceeding term limits. Too many recently from Guinea to Ivory Coast. As much as I hate to say it because of the threat we face in ISWAP that is still struggling for relevance (a reason I kept silent on Mali even if I thought something should have been done) it might be best to send a clear signal to the would be putschists in Conakry to stand down immediately. A day lingers and they start playing straight from Col. Goita's playbook a dangerous trend for West Africa. Col. Goita himself should be sanctioned that guy single handedly has become the problem. I tend not to see any event narrowly. It seems every thing is being done by external powers to pull Nigeria down to its feet and dismember it. Every time we get close to defeating state enemies something else intractable shows up. The NN decommissioned its missile boats including the Frigate Aradu to better restrategize for better output as the costs of fleet maintenance outweighed the prestige reasons of sea going missile platforms which is the current debilitating situation of the SAN. Turning Aradu into a training ship doesn't declassify it as a Frigate rather a force multiplier in terms of training for a new one. People do care about patrol boats. Actually ocean patrol boats are the darling of Navies. It ensures continuous presence at sea. You are not a Navy if you have all the missiles but can't sail and show the flag, you are no better than a land force. And if we are going by NN classification then we have two sea going Frigates in the high endurance Hamilton cutters. But let's come to the future. 3 OPVs and 3 inshore IPVs in a forever time that stubbornly refuses to see the daylight is actually laughable to us. This is something we have and are acquiring like the water they sail on Have you bothered to check us out. Fact is we have since left you behind on that one. Your Gripens are not the NG standard so at our current level in Nigeria you are obsolete. One Nigerian Air Force BVR JF-17 Thunder equals almost half of your entire Gripen fleet and can track and hit your multiple Gripens before they know what hit them even if it's a Mig which it is not. In fact none of your rationed pilots assuming you find one will dare go up against a BVR capable jet, its suicide. Besides the M346FA in the numbers mentioned is already a credible deterrent. Are you even aware of these developments. See you are the one retarde.d and to think you of all people. GBADS or GBEDS or whatever you call it if it's not integrated S-400 battery which is the known threat worldwide to stand-off platform is useless against a single JF-17 Thunder which will take them out out of radar range. When compared to your OPV & Inshore projects I'm sure you'd agree Nigeria is doing a far better job and on pace. It is an aberration to say Nigeria has no offensive platforms maybe you mean missile weaponry. The heavy guns on our modern OPVs can hit a range of about 100km with precision targeting. That is a heavy firepower that qualifies as offensive. It is a credible threat from the sea. The SAAF Gripen has received no mid-life upgrades. We keep hearing about these contracts that never see the light of day due to lack of funds. Meanwhile our F-7Ni much newer have received upgrades. Besides we have just inducted BVR capable air superiority fighters. Remember when we used to talk about it that it makes the difference. Well now we have it in the JF-17 Thunder and you don't. A fly-by-wire stand-off weapon delivery air platform is not a 3rd generation fighter. Nigeria's Mi-35M is superior to the Rooivalk. Nigeria also now has the A-29 Super Tucano and expecting the arrival of attack M346FA. If your air defence system is not S-400 please spare us the tirade. Yours is medium range. Tell us something we don't know about datalinks. It is not much of a luxury these days. You must be living in the past in the pen. Nigeria perhaps has 35 modern VT-4 tanks but exact numbers are not known. The VT-4 is a 3rd generation tank it is insane to compare it with world war 11 olifant tanks upgraded or not. Only you perhaps will choose the latter. And China is the de jure superpower. Wake up. Our military and equipment holding is in better shape and funding where needed. And to help you further military strength is about everything if one part slides it can determine who lives or dies in the field. So planning, funding, training, equipment holding, maintenance culture, procurement, logistics, intelligence every part has to have some semblance of functionality else the whole house comes crumbling down or worse remain a paper tiger and museum artifacts which is the present state of the SANDF. Intelligence estimates are infallible as it stands currently and in the foreseeable future. If they like they write, holler false narratives backed by biased western publications the reality speaks for itself and experts know the facts. South Africa is not miles ahead of Nigeria. Nigeia is miles ahead of Nigeria. Militarily Nigeria has closed the gap opened by the some 5 billion dollar weapons purchase of South Africa in the 90's in terms of strategic assets short of missile boats. Mind you in that time Nigeria decommissioned its Naval missile capability for sensible reasons (which hitherto during apartheid was the most powerful naval force in sub-saharan Africa, pls check records before you quote me), drew up a new strategic short term, medium and long term plans and cumulatively has spent more than South Africa's total weapons purchase at the time in new systems across board which is still ongoing. South Africa has not matched that funding in new equipments nor in standing up new combat elements and the requisite professionals rather it is has lagged behind. Again the facts are public knowledge. Google is your friend. It's a disgrace to Nigerianness you can't stand up to foreigners who set the narratives for you to bow & kiss to without any independent investigation. Nigeria's acquisitions are game changers. A single BVR JF-17 Thunder can do more damage than the entire current South African fleet of Gripens except upgraded E/F. The valours and heroines you mention are not modern as you allude and more often broken down, in storage, inoperable or sitting in dry dock and lacking in skilled manpower. I wonder how you'd sail that armada up north maybe by some juju or you call in the Cubans. We hear they are practically running things down there due to the lack of skilled South Africans. Our current OPVs are more modern and digitized even if without missiles and God forbid any eventuality can be very quickly armed with missiles not that I need to mention the NN is no stranger to missile technology and is very quickly bridging that gap with a new Frigate and new OPVs in short order. The Nigerian Navy also has a new Landing Ship Tank (LST) and another one in tow that can quickly bring in combat troops. The SAN does not have anywhere that capability or capacity. And oh it's a shame South Africa has no modern maritime aircrafts like Nigeria or Naval Aviation as do the NN with more aircrafts on order. The Gulf of Guinea has seen reduction in piracy to only 5 attacks this year due to the robust patrol and FE systems of the Navy. Thanks but your tantrum there does not hold sway. I'd think you would celebrate that. There is no evidence to support the SAN was escorting ships during the Suez Canal crisis. Don't invent something where there is none. The Cape of Good Hope is far flung without any base for resupply or logistics for any pirate or pirate industry to thrive. If it did from what we currently know the SAN will struggle. The last we heard of the SAN was in the Mozambique Channel with a ship ill-suited for the task because it lacked modern OPVs. South Africa went buying equipments it didn't need with no adequate skilled manpower base to operate them leading to loss time at sea and in the air. No one was going to fight South Africa, its position on the world map makes it highly unlikely but apparently people just freed from slavery thought they could throw their weight around in Africa in competition with an existing giant. It was a losing gamble. The fact is the balance of power has shifted in Nigeria's favour both from the military to the economic dimensions. No expert would expect South Africa to be able to compete with Nigeria as the years go by. There are expert papers out there to support this fact. Nigeria is a giant and South Africa is not. I'm not here to continue to join these issues but to establish the facts as they are. South Africa itself under President Ramaphosa has accepted that reality. And please stop telling us about experience. Nigeria fought in the world war and has been fighting local and foreign wars from the day it became an independent country. The South African military you have today is not the one that fought in those wars you mention. Try and be more forthright next time and not be condescending just because you have a blog. With just the appearance of the M346FAs especially in the numbers mentioned and the presence of JF-17 Thunders it is clear the balance of power has changed at least from the air before we even start factoring in the NN with its current inventory the largest in sub-saharan Africa at least by numbers and its anticipated acquisitions in the short term. Any military planner worth his salt will not even contemplate the idea except first to demand the balance of power be evened.
