After news of the executions became public, South African President Nelson Mandela said his delegation would recommend Nigeria's suspension until a democratic government was elected.

___

1995: Nigeria hangs human rights activists
The writer and human rights activist, Ken Saro-Wiwa, has been executed in Nigeria despite worldwide pleas for clemency.
The country's military rulers ordered the execution of Mr Saro-Wiwa and eight other dissidents should go ahead at 0730 local time (0830 GMT).

They were taken in chains to a prison in the southern city of Port Harcourt and hanged.

The activists were condemned to death 10 days ago after being found guilty of involvement in four murders.

Mr Saro-Wiwa insisted they were framed because of their opposition to the oil industry in the Niger-Delta region of southern Nigeria.

At his trial Mr Saro-Wiwa said the case was designed to prevent members of his tribe, the Ogoni, from stopping pollution of their homeland and getting a fair share of oil profits.

Dozens of Ogonis have been imprisoned by the military regime led by General Sani Abacha who seized power two years ago.

'Judicial murder'

The government is fearful of their opposition to mining driving the companies away, especially the Anglo-Dutch group, Shell.

Shell is the largest operator in Nigeria and oil it extracts in the Niger-Delta region provides most of Nigeria's export earnings.

The deaths of Mr Saro-Wiwa and the other activists looks likely to lead to Nigeria's expulsion or suspension from the Commonwealth whose leaders are currently meeting in New Zealand.

After news of the executions became public, South African President Nelson Mandela said his delegation would recommend Nigeria's suspension until a democratic government was elected.

British Prime Minister John Major called the executions "judicial murder" and said he did not see how Nigeria could now remain in the Commonwealth.

A grateful Mr. Mandela salutes the Nigerian nation as he exists the plane to a warm Nigerian welcome at the Airport. No one has complained of technical faults on our submarine prototypes - anywhere in the world.

As for your drones, let's see:

1. At least two cancelled orders - the complaint being poor performance; and

2. At least one description accusing the source of making drones that "fall out the sky like flies"

Now, until you show something similar for our submarine prototypes, you need to accept that your nation is the source of fortunes untold for all. South Africa included.

Report: Turkey plans to return 'poor' Israeli UAVs

Defense News' quotes Turkish procurement official as saying contract for 3 Aerostar UAVs is "at the stage of cancellation."
Turkey plans to return three Aerostar UAVs to Israel due to "poor performance," the global newsweekly Defense News reported this week.

“The contract is at a stage of cancellation,” the report quoted a procurement official as saying.

The UAV, produced by Israel's Aeronautics Defense Systems based in Yavne, has a range of 200 kilometers and is capable of carrying an 80 kilogram payload.

The report quoted Nizar Amir, the Israeli embassy spokesman in Ankara, as saying “We have not been informed by Turkish authorities” about the Turkish position.

Poland cancels Aerostar UAV purchase

Poland's defence ministry has cancelled a contract to purchase Aerostar unmanned air systems from Israeli company Aeronautics, and will also ask for compensation.

Signed in 2010 and covering two systems, the $35 million purchase was made in order to deploy the UAS in Afghanistan, where Polish army units are part of the NATO-led International Security Assistance Force.

Warsaw's deal included the development of an automatic take-off and landing (ATOL) capability, with this to have enabled the unmanned aircraft to approach and land safely in windy conditions and other ground effects encountered in the operational area.

Aeronautics encountered problems with the ATOL capability, which led to it failing to meet the delivery schedule agreed in the contract. The company, which has yet to comment on the Polish decision, has also faced other problems during recent months, with sources saying that a disagreement between its shareholders has delayed some projects.

Mandela's final moments spent with Winnie and Graça
09 DEC 2013 11:24 DAVID SMITH

Graça Machel and Winnie Madikizela-Mandela were at the bedside of former president Nelson Mandela when he died, says family friend Bantu Holomisa.

Nelson Mandela's final moments were spent off a life support machine with his wife, Graça Machel, and his former wife Winnie Madikizela-Mandela at his bedside, witnesses have said.

The former president died at his home in Houghton, Johannesburg, at 8.50pm on Thursday, sending millions into mourning in South Africa and around the world.

Bantu Holomisa, a politician and close family friend, recalled how less than three hours earlier he found Mandela asleep and struggling to breathe but "still fighting".

Holomisa (58) said he received a call on Thursday afternoon telling him to come urgently. "They said on the phone that Madiba [Mandela's clan name] doesn't look good," he told the Guardian. "I immediately drove straight to his home and went to his bedroom."

The time was 6.35pm and Mandela's condition was clearly at a new low. "I could confirm this wasn't the Madiba we've seen since he went into hospital. He was sleeping with no life support machine. You could hear from his breathing that he was struggling.

"Winnie and Graça were at the bedside of Madiba. You could see the tension. I bowed to acknowledge them then gave myself a moment of silence with Madiba. [I] said thank you to the doctors and then left at 6.50pm for another engagement."

Conditioned mind
At that point Holomisa did not realise he would never see his mentor again. "I was still in a state of denial. He's still fighting, but it was not to be. I was not that shocked when he died because I had just seen him. My mind was conditioned from the time I received the call."

The national outpouring of song and dance in honour of Mandela's life moved Holomisa, who remained close to him despite being expelled from the ANC and setting up the rival United Democratic Movement.

"It [Mandela's passing] reminds me of the day Mandela was released or, after his election, the day we inaugurated him as president. The mood is one of celebration and he would appreciate it as typical of him," said Holomisa.

Dali Tambo, son of Mandela's friend and ally Oliver Tambo, was woken by his son with the news at around midnight on Thursday. He then went to Mandela's home to find Machel, Madikizela-Mandela and other family members, relatives of the late Walter Sisulu, as well as President Jacob Zuma and several government ministers.

"There was a prayer and a hymn," he said. "The leadership consulted with the family about arrangements. The body was brought down and taken to a morgue. It was very sad, very sombre. It's always a hard experience for the family when the deceased leaves. I remember with my father, we had an argument about wanting him to stay longer. It's like a full stop."

Members of the public were gathering outside the high walls of the home in a tree-lined suburb, lighting candles and singing liberation-era songs. Tambo added: "You could hear the crowd. It was beautiful and spontaneous. They were [the] first who'd heard the news and had rushed there. They were emotional. My last words to a group of ANC people who asked me to toyi-toyi with them were, 'I'm going to bed'."

Casket
Sunday Times reported that Mandela's daughter Makaziwe and grandson Mandla were also at his deathbed. Grandson Mandla Mandela had been urgently summoned from Mvezo in Eastern Cape province early on Thursday morning. Nelson Mandela's daughters from his marriage to Madikizela-Mandela, Zindzi and Zenani, were both in London for the royal premiere of Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom and left the screening for the first flight home.

The military arrived with a casket to collect Mandela's body at about midnight so it could be taken to a military hospital in the capital, Pretoria, where it will lie in state this week. As the casket left draped in the South African national flag, Mandla Mandela sang his grandfather's praises with the words, "Aah Dalibunga" and was joined by family members and political leaders, the paper reported.

According to the City Press, it was Tuesday night when Zuma learned of Mandela's deteriorating condition and that his death was imminent. "On Wednesday, word came from his house in Houghton that his already critical condition had worsened," the paper said. "He was fading fast. Mandela had not spoken a single word for months.

"On Thursday night, he was entering the final moments of his life. His former wife, Winnie Madikizela-Mandela, was there and preparing to stay overnight. Those in the house speak of an overwhelming sadness that engulfed it. Family members were allowed into his room in pairs or in threes and allowed private moments with him."

The paper cited different sources making different claims about the cause of death including fluid on the lungs, a serious infection that was antibiotic resistant, and blood pressure that dropped too low. On Sunday the presidential spokesperson Mac Maharaj did not respond to requests for comment. – © Guardian News and Media 2013

World leaders, thousands of South Africans to honor Mandela

Working off plans developed for years in secret, the South African government is using an elite military task force, sniper teams and canine teams to help secure the stadium, CNN's Arwa Damon reported Monday. In addition, helicopters and military jets frequently fly overhead. .

"Should anybody, anything dare to disturb or disrupt this period of mourning and finally taking and accompanying the former president to his last resting place, then that person will be dealt with," Brig. Gen. Xolani Mabanga said Monday.

U.S. officials are satisfied with security arrangements.
"We have not heard any concerns," Deputy National Security Adviser Ben Rhodes told reporters aboard Air Force One as the president flew to South Africa.
"The South Africans hosted the World Cup, so they have experience hosting significant crowds and managing events like this," he said, "although clearly this is really a unique event in world history, given the number of leaders coming to pay their respects, as well as the people of South Africa."

May Day! May Day!! May Day!!!: Widows, orphans dying at Cameroun border

http://www.osundefender.org/?p=135766

Unpalatable scenes from of Boko Haram refugee camps on the Cameroon-Nigeria border reveal that women give birth to babies in bad conditions. News from the camps indicate that lack of medical supplies have resulted in deaths of several persons from preventable diseases because of the horrific living conditions.
No food! No water! No money! The refugees have left the comfort of their homes and are making do with newly cleared church compound, sleeping on bare floor; come rain, come shine. Pity those who are weaning children with little or nothing to eat. Not too far away from the camps are pit latrines. The only source of water, two wells, is contaminated. Men, women, children, old and young cannot go far for fear of being attacked by insurgents suspected to be members of Boko Haram, who are said to be parading the neighbourhood looking for who to conscript into their Islamic army or Cameroonian gendarmes.
In October, some insurgents invaded sleepy Gwoza community, shooting sporadically, killing people amid shouts of Allahu Akbar (God is Great) and disappeared afterwards toward Kurana Bassa village that leads to Gwoza hills. Intelligence reports indicate that some insurgents are still hiding on the Gwoza hills since the declaration of a state of emergency in the three states of Borno, Yobe and Adamawa by President Goodluck Jonathan a little over six months ago.
Many of the victims who fled the attack are currently refugees in the premises of a village church—Church of Christ in Nations, COCIN – in Galma village, Cameroon. The church which was founded in 1904 with headquarters in Jos, Plateau State was originally known as Church of Christ in Nigeria.
*Boko haram
*Boko haram
Despite appeals by Borno State government for them to return, their spokesperson declared: “We cannot return to our residence in Gwoza council area until the security of lives and property is guaranteed with deployment of soldiers, because even the policemen in our area are not spared by the insurgents whenever they attack our communities in Gwoza.”
Recent reports put the number of Nigerians held in Niger Republic and Cameroon as a result of the attacks by Boko Haram members at 70,000. A United Nations report said the Nigerian crisis had pushed nearly 40,000 refugees over the northern border into Niger and Cameroon in a drive that was straining food supplies in the drought-prone country.
The UN Office for the Co-ordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA), in its latest report, indicated that a total of 37,332 refugees had fled to Niger, nearly 29,000 of who are officially nationals of that country. The report said that this figure was three times more than expected, an indication of a difficulty in developing a humanitarian response.
Thousands of refugees have also spilled into Cameroon, prompting Nigeria to reach out for help in policing their shared border. The deputy governor of Borno State, Alhaji Zannah Umar Mustapha, who visited the border towns in Gwoza Local Government Area, called on Nigerians who fled to that neighbouring country to come back home as government was making necessary arrangements for their safety.....

When the SANDF decides that it needs drones from Denel, it will get drones from Denel as and when it needs them. Whatever Denel manufactures, SANDF can get at transfer pricing. Taxpayer pays. Taxpayer profits. Transactions cancel each other out.

End of story.

And I told you that you know nothing about the industry - the market - hence your quoting market news and foaming in the mouth. It's a pointless quote. Cancelled it.

The fact that south-africa manufactures drones, doesn't mean the SANDF deploys all of them.[s] I've stated the number of drones in nigerian airforce service ( if you doubt the veracity of my post, google up SIPRI's Israeli weapons sale in africa from 2006-2010 or you can post your email address here, so I can send you the PDF file).

The united states has manufactured over 4000 F-16's, are all the F-16's so far manufactured in US airforce service?

Until proven otherwise, the nigerian airforce has the largest fleet of surveillance drones of any military in SSA[/s].
But it can deploy them whenever it wants to. Denel is the manufacturing arm of the SANDF. It's as simple as that.

No amount of denial, anger or whatever else will change that.

Nigeria27: every conflict creates refugees but clearly your too stupid to realize this are you telling me that south african and the rest of the un failed the refugees that were created because of the conflict ? you are honestly just an idiot
Exactly!

Therefore, you are no different from all the other conflict-ridden regions of Africa, with incompetent militaries.

If this were really a "squashable" terrorist insurgency, it'd be gone by now and there'd be no refugees.

But, the refugees are increasing and your claims of being victorious are being exposed as lies.

This has become a civil war and people are dying in deserts.

Failure.

And you...are just a hurt little man.

chris365: Mr man if I wanted denels profile I know How to get it. [s]So don't paste long cut and paste story for me if your head is too empty say anything.

Just cos it's state owned doesn't mean they just throw whatever they develop at the military free of charge. No defence industry can survive that way.

Denel builds drones doesn't mean SANDF packs them. Your government has to pay for it. Simple[/s]
Wanting it is one thing. Needing it is quite another.

You clearly need it because you have no clue what you are talking about.

Listen to you!

Tax monies buy Denel equipment. Denel's profits and retained earnings go back into the tax-payer's fiscus. Transfer pricing. That's it. There's a sole shareholder. The government.

When SANDF decides it wants those drones, Denel MUST supply them. Simple.

You need the profile. But most importantly, you need a brain. You are talking kak about that which you know nothing about. What does Naai-geria know about defence industries anyway?

"Denel SOC Ltd is a South African state owned aerospace and defence technology conglomerate established in 1991. It was created when the manufacturing subsidiaries of Armscor were split off in order for Armscor to become the procurement agency for South African Defence Force (SADF), now known as the South African National Defence Force (SANDF), and the manufacturing divisions were grouped together under Denel as divisions.
Denel was established as a state-owned industrial company under the Ministry of Public Enterprises in April 1992. It inherited most of Armscor's production and research facilities, and over 15 000 employees. At the time of its formation, Denel restructured and reorganised the former Armscor subsidiaries into a number of divisions and subsidiaries within five industrial groups: systems, manufacturing, aerospace, informatics, and properties and engineering services."

Nigeria27: what the Bleep is wrong with you why would you post a video of a person dieing you are honestly just an idiot you make all south africans look bad
Take it up with your army.

They're the ones churning out refugees.

They were asked to save Naai-geria, but they are burning Naai-geria.

Oh! Every South African has a mind of his own and can speak freely and as an individual.

You wouldn't know anything about that, seeing as you murder your journalists.

(I learnt from the best, by the way).

Naai-gerians die in the Sahara, thanks to the refugee situation.

The rubbish military of Naai-geria has failed its people.

rka1: SELEKA REBELS certainly put your boys in Hell. They obviously thought they were the French. Humble pie indeed. grin
How so? The last time I checked, we killed hundreds?

And, the last time I checked, we went on to shine in the DRC. We continue to.

Where's Naai-geria? Oh, those losers? They abandoned their missions in Mali and Darfur, leaving their equipment behind.

They are now in the Boko Haram sweatshop, disgracing Africa and churning out refugees. A six-month walk in the park has become a civil war. Not about to end anytime soon.

Rubbish military.

Seeing as this is now a civil war situation, the OAU should request organised nations on the African continent to go and save Naai-geria from itself.

chris365: Don't mind fighter pilot. As if denel builds weapons to dash SANDF.

NAF develops it's own drone for use while SANDF helplessly waits for Pretoria to pay denel for even one drone. grin
If you don't know - ask.

DENEL's primary duty is to supply arms to the SANDF. It's government owned. It sells only because South Africa isn't at war. Unlike, Naai-geria. cry

rka1: It will be great to see you eat humble pie. Make sure you are around and don't go AWOL like SANDF.
You mean ten years from now?

Well, you're all already eating humble pie.

You're in hell.
Foreign AffairsRe: Who Has The Strongest Military In Africa? by CraigB: 7:46pm On Dec 08, 2013
rka1: You are truly a class act aren't you. Just because people rightly pointed out that SANDF fled SELEKA rebels it has been eating away at you. If SANDF had returned and done the deed, they would have been hailed for it. But they didn't and it has now been listed as a failure for the SANDF. Eat it and stop throwing tantrums like spoilt child.
The take it like you give it and be happy.

No need for long stories and crying.

Enjoy your kak - happily dished out for you to eat. Don't try to act as though CraigB hasn't learnt from the worst.

Glad we agree.

Only problem - you spoke too soon. You're in Boko haram hell and there's nothing you can do about it.
