A 55-year-old man, Michael Adesitimi and his 20-year-old daughter, Ebunoluwa, have been killed over alleged land dispute in Ondo State. Mr Adesitimi, an ICT consultant was killed on Tuesday night, October 25, 2022 at his Akure residence while the daughter was killed nine months ago. According to The Nation report, late Adesitimi was hacked with an axe at about 9pm while at home with his wife. His wife was said to have escaped through the back door after watching her husband get hacked with an axe Late Adesitimi was said to have answered a knock at his gate while his wife watched through the window. It was when the wife saw that the men brought out an axe and a gun that she fled. The wife has reportedly told the police that she heard the men demanding documents of the disputed piece of land in Ibadan. Eldest son of the deceased, Atinu Adesitimi, said his parents were conscious about their safety after the death of his younger sister "According to my mother who was watching the scenario through the window, she said she saw two people who forced themselves into the compound through the gate," he explained. "According to her, their faces were not clearly seen because the place was dark. All that she saw was the gun in the hand of one of the men who escorted my dad back into the main building which was a little distance from the gate. "She overheard the men asking my father, “Where is the document?" My mum, who witnessed what was happening, took to her heels through the back door to our neighbour’s house where she was able to call policemen. "The policemen at the checkpoint, rather than follow us to our house to save the situation, took us back to their station where we wasted time. By the time my mum and the policemen returned to the house, my father was already dead "My dad had earlier told me that there had been a case of land dispute between himself and some men that encroached on his grandmother’s land and that the case has been in court for six years. "That is the only document my father told me about. Those who killed my sister were also looking for the paper of my father’s seven plots of land in Ibadan which the court had already given to my father because he was in possession of the original documents of the land Spokesman of the State Police Command, SP Fumilayo Odunlami, who confirmed the incident said investigation has commenced. "We can’t tell how it happened or how he was hacked to death as investigation is fully in top gear on the issue." he added.

Court orders FG to return Nnamdi Kanu to Kenya and pay him N500m as damages for his illegal extradition Justice E.N Anyadike of a Federal High Court sitting in Umuahia, the Abia State capital, today October 26, ordered the Federal Government to return the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra, Nnamdi Kanu to Kenya from where he was extradited and pay him the sum of N500 million as damages following his illegal abduction and human rights abuse from Kenya. Recall that Kanu was extradited from Kenya to Nigeria on June 19, 2021. The Court presided by Justice E . N Anyadike, insisted that the extradition of Kanu from Kenya without recourse to the legal process was a flagrant abuse of his fundamental human rights. Kanu, through his counsel, Aloy Ejimakor, had approached the court challenging his extradition from Kenya on June 19, 2022. Ejimakor told the court that the suit is sui generis (of a special class) and was primarily aimed at redressing the infamous unlawful expulsion or extraordinary rendition of Kanu, which is a clear violation of his fundamental rights under Article 12(4) of the African Charter on Human and Peoples Rights, as well as Chapter IV of the Nigerian Constitution. ‘In addition to the rendition, I am asking the Court to redress the myriad violations that came with the rendition, such as the torture, the unlawful detention and the denial of the right to fair hearing which is required by law before anybody can be expelled from one country to the other. I am also seeking to halt his prosecution and restore him to the status quo before his rendition on 19th June 2021. You will recall that on January 19, 2022, the High Court of Abia State decided that portion of violation of Kanu’s fundamental rights that occurred in 2017. Even as I had made claims that bordered on rendition, the Court declined jurisdiction on grounds that rendition, being related to extradition, lies within the exclusive jurisdiction of the Federal High Court. This is what informed my decision to initiate the suit before the Federal High Court. To be sure, the extraordinary rendition of Nnamdi Kanu, triggered myriad legal questions that cut across multiple jurisdictions in Nigeria and even triggered the international legal order, to boot. In other words, the rendition has expanded the matter of Kanu far beyond the realms of the Abuja trial and opened up new legal frontiers that must be ventilated to the hilt before other courts and tribunals within and without Nigeria. Thus, this very case before the Federal High Court in Umuahia is one of such that is aimed at seeking a definitive judicial pronouncement on the constitutionality of the extraordinary rendition. The ones in the United Kingdom, Kenya, African Union, and the United Nations are in addition”. He argued that the federal government should be required to show the legal document or authority that served as the foundation for his “abduction or extraordinary rendition.” Among the several reliefs sought, Kanu through his counsel asked the court for “an order mandating and compelling the respondents to pay the sum of N25,000,000,000.00 (Twenty-Five Billion Naira) to the applicant, being monetary damages claimed by the applicant against the respondents jointly and severally for the physical, mental, emotional, psychological, property and other damages suffered by the applicant as a result of the infringements of applicant’s fundamental rights by the respondents”. Delivering a ruling on the suit, the presiding judge held that the extradition of Kanu from Kenya without recourse to the legal process was a flagrant abuse of his fundamental human rights. She also held that the respondent failed to disprove the claims of the applicant that he was arrested, blindfolded, tortured, and chained to the ground for eight days in Kenya before his extradition. This verdict is coming barely a week after the court of appeal in Abuja discharged Kanu on charges of terrorism on the grounds that he was illegally renditioned to Nigeria.

Media personality and member of the Peoples Democratic Party’s presidential campaign council, Dele Momodu has described the presidential candidate of the All Progressives Congress, Bola Tinubu, as a potential dictator. Momodu made the claim while appearing on a Channels Television program on Tuesday, October 24. He added that he doesn't support dictatorship as he lost a lot to it. Momodu said; “I will never support a dictatorship. I suffered under dictatorship. I was in detention, I was in exile for three years. Dictatorship has no way in my books. “So once you begin to demonstrate dictatorship, I will move back. He (Tinubu) is a potential dictator.”

This was confirmed by Kanu’s Special Counsel, Aloy Ejimakor, in a tweet. He tweeted: “Breaking: Federal High Court, Umuahia denies the Federal Government’s application to transfer the ‘extraordinary rendition’ suit to Abuja. “And rules that Umuahia has the jurisdiction to hear and determine the suit. “Reading of the rest of the judgment continues.” The Special Counsel was challenging Kanu’s abduction and extraordinary rendition from Kenya. Nevertheless, he is praying the court to order his return to Kenya or UK, his country of abode. Why Nnamdi Kanu cannot be released – Nigerian govt However, the Federal Government has given reasons why it cannot obey the court ruling. The ruling ordered for the release of Nnamdi Kanu, the embattled leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB. The Nigerian government told the Appeal Court in Abuja that Kanu poses a flight risk and is a threat to national security. An Assistant State Counsel in the Attorney-General of the Federation office, David Kaswe, informed the court that the case against Kanu bordered on national security. Kaswe said: “It is important to appreciate the gamut of depositions in our application. The Respondent is a flight risk person. And one of the grounds of our application is that this matter touches on national security of the State. “Once there is a threat to national security, human rights of any individual can be suspended. Until such threat is taken care of.” Kaswe also informed the court that releasing Kanu would worsen the security situation in the South East.

The presidential candidate of the Labour Party (LP), Peter Obi, has insisted he never issued an order for Nasir el-Rufai to be detained during the 2013 Anambra governorship election. El-Rufai, on Monday, claimed that as an official of the All Progressives Congress (APC), he had gone to Anambra to monitor the 2013 governorship election. He, however, alleged that he was detained in his hotel room on the order of Obi, who was Anambra governor at the time. Responding to the Kaduna governor’s claim at the event, the LP candidate said he was not behind the directive for el-Rufai’s detention, adding that he was also detained in his LGA. “When I came in now, somebody told me that my brother, the governor of Kaduna state, said that he came to my state and I detained him. Let me tell you, it is good when these things happen, you clarify them,” he said. “Number one, in my eight years of being governor, only in the first three months did I have a commissioner that is not from the north — commissioner of police. And that’s because I met the person. “At the time the governor said this, it was during election. The police commissioner that was there then was from Adamawa — CP Gwari from Adamawa. The AIG that supervised that election was CP Nasarawa from the north. The DIG that came for that election was from Kano. “Tell me my power, that I was in APGA — government was PDP and APC. Tell me how APGA person will issue order for somebody to be detained. Even me was detained in my local government. “However, the only offence I committed is that when they asked me, I said ‘that’s how they treat everybody; that I wouldn’t be in Kaduna on the day of election’. That was the only thing. “There is no way. I cannot do that. As governor of Anambra state, I had the best ADC in Nigeria — the best policeman. My ADC, Mohammed, is from Kano. He’s the best policeman that I have ever met. Who will I give the order? How will I tell who lives in my house every day; I’m close to his family; I get up and say ‘Mohammed, I want to deal with your people’, and he will stay there. “Call my ADC today. I will give you his phone number. He’s the best policeman. He’s a CSP now. So, when people say Peter Obi is black. 2019, I was [vice-presidential candidate], I was a good man. Now that I want to be president, I’ve become a bad man. I did not do anything wrong. I want to change Nigeria.” Stop being a bystander; you can engage in political activities as well.
