Why the Labour Party is not a social media party


Comrade Arabambi Abayomi, the Labour Party's National Publicity Secretary, has revealed why the party is not a social media party.

Arabambi said that over 22 million registered voters had expressed interest in the Party.

He asserted this in Lagos, saying that the Labour Party will win the 2023 elections because Nigerians want change after the All Progressives Congress, APC, failed to satisfy their expectations.

"We are not a social media political party," he explained. The folks leading our rallies around the country are human beings. We are the unusual political party that will shift our country from consumption to production. We have 22 million Nigerians with us right now, based on the number of support groups that have registered with their voter cards and phone numbers.


"And we're anticipating more before the end of the year." Nigerians desire to change; they have been through a lot, and they know who they want to lead them. The movement is so large all throughout Nigeria because Peter Obi is the only pan-Nigeria candidate that the people trust. These are Nigerians requesting the constructive change."


Speaking on who the Party's rightful governorship candidate in Lagos State is, he stated, "The emergence of Gbadebo Rhodes-Vivour as the LP's 2023 Lagos state governorship candidate followed all necessary laws, regulations, and guidelines as provided in our Constitution, the Federal Republic of Nigeria's Constitution, and INEC guidelines."


"Just to clear the air, Awamaridi was the head of the LP Lagos state Caretaker Committee at one point." He was designated as a placeholder for the governorship primary election, and his name was submitted as the governorship candidate because Lagos LP had not completed all of the necessary requirements.

"Mr Ifagbemi Awamaridi's placeholder position was one from which he publicly submitted official resignation." Awamaridi's resignation letter was signed and offered willingly, voluntarily, and explicitly. Documents, of course, do not lie. "He is no longer our gubernatorial candidate," he continued.

The National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Senator Iyiocha Ayu has declared nobody, including Rivers Governor Nyesom Wike, can force him to resign.

He vowed he will see out his four-year mandate to run the PDP despite calls for his resignation by Wike and his supporters in the party.

The PDP has been in embroiled in an internal crisis after Atiku picked Delta Governor Ifeanyi Okowa as his running mate.

The decision was considered a slap by the Wike’s camp, which has been holding series of meetings within and outside the country and dishing out conditions for settlement which include call for the national chairman’s resignation.

Many of those calling for resignation, according to Ayu, were children when he and other chieftains laboured to form the PDP.

Speaking in an interview on the Hausa service of BBC on Wednesday, Ayu argued the presidential candidacy of Atiku Abubakar does not in any way affect his position as the PDP National Chairman.

In the interview monitored by The Nation in Kaduna, Ayu said even if the presidential candidate had come from Benue State, it would not have justified the call for his resignation.

According to him: “I stood for election and I won the election and I am fixing the party, I have not stolen anything, I have not committed any offence, we will not allow one person to come and spoil the party for us with frivolous calls and conditions.

“I was elected as PDP chairman for a four-year term and I am not up to one year. So the call for my resignation is uncalled for. The election of Abubakar Atiku as the PDP presidential candidate cannot affect my election as national chairman, even if the candidate is from Benue state, I stood for election and I was voted for by Nigerians”.


When asked in specific terms the call by Wike’s camp’s call for his resignation among other conditions to support Atiku, he said: “All that he is doing does not affect me because I know I am fixing the party. I am doing my work diligently, I have not committed any offense. I have not stolen any money, so there is no reason for my resignation.

‘’When we started the PDP all those ones were children, they were not there, we will not allow one person to become a spoiler, this is our country, so all that is expected of us is to fix the country, provide security and dividends of democracy when we take over power in 2023.’’

Former Senate President Bukola Saraki believes the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) would easily defeat the incumbent All Progressives Congress (APC) in Kwara State's governorship election next year.

Senator Saraki based his confidence on the incumbent Governor AbdulRahman Abdulrazaq-led administration's poor performance during the previous three years.

Saraki, a former governor of the state, made the remarks over the weekend in Ilorin, the state capital, after meeting with a group of APC defectors led by one Kayode Ogunlowo, a loyalist of Information and Culture Minister Lai Mohammed.

Saraki said that the 2019 otoge campaign was propaganda and a web of deceit meant to dupe Kwarans and "throw us out."

"However, the Kwarans have learned their lessons the hard way. By the grace of God, I am convinced that the PDP will oust the APC from the Government House in 2023.

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has called a complete, thorough, and indefinite strike, citing the Federal Government's apparent inability to address its requests directly.

The union's leadership stated that the indefinite strike began at 12:01 a.m. on Monday.

On Monday, ASUU made the decision at the end of an emergency National Executive Council meeting at the ASUU secretariat at the University of Abuja.

"In light of the foregoing, and after thorough debates on the Government's reaction to the resolution of 14th February, 2022 thus far, NEC determined that the Union's requests had not been effectively met."

"As a result, the NEC agreed to convert the roll-over strike to a comprehensive, entire, and indefinite strike action commencing at 12.01 a.m. on Monday, August 29th, 2022," ASUU said in a statement signed by its President, Prof Emmanuel Osodeke, on Monday night in Abuja.

The union stated that it will continue to work on the full execution of the December 23, 2020 Memorandum of Action for the rapid restoration of industrial peace in Nigeria's public institutions.

It also stated that it was still open to sensible engagements, as it has always been.

"NEC appreciated the previous and ongoing efforts of distinguished Nigerians and NGOs to intervene in the lingering dispute."

"As we have always done, our Union is open to fair engagements." "However, ASUU remains committed to fully implementing the 23rd December, 2020 Memorandum of Action for the rapid restoration of industrial peace at Nigeria's public institutions," the union said in a statement.

The ASUU NEC lamented that the union had been subjected to a high degree of deception over the previous five and a half years as the Federal Government engaged ASUU in unproductive and never-ending negotiations with no show of fidelity.

The union, which expressed dissatisfaction with government agents, chastised Adamu Adamu, Minister of Education, for willful untruth and manipulation of facts in order to score cheap political benefits.

"It is disappointing to think that a Minister whose job it is to tackle the problem can turn around and lead in this ignoble business of misrepresenting facts and deceiving Nigerians overnight."

"The Minister of Education's disdain for questions about the ongoing ASUU strike at his distasteful Press Conference on Thursday, 18th August, 2022 lends credence to the widespread suspicion that the current Government never believed in saving public universities from the misfortunes that have befallen Nigeria's public primary and secondary schools," ASUU said.

"NEC noticed with sadness that the Union had undergone a lot of deception at the highest level in the previous five and a half years as the Federal Government of Nigeria (FGN) engaged ASUU in pointless and endless negotiation without a demonstration of absolute loyalty," the statement adds. In 2017,Under the presidency of Dr. Wale Babalakin, the Federal Government formed a committee to revise the 2009 FGN-ASUU Agreement. Dr. Babalakin was succeeded in December 2020 by Professor Emeritus Munzali Jibril, following three years of unsuccessful negotiations. In May 2021, the Renegotiation Committee drafted and submitted a draft agreement to the Federal Government. It is unfortunate that the Federal Government made no meaningful steps to sign the agreement or begin implementation until the 14th of February, 2022, when the continuing strike began. The Federal Government recreated the committee only after the strike began, with Professor Emeritus Nimi Briggs named Chairman to lead the Government Team.

Leonard said that her government will continue to help efforts to reclaim the cash stolen from Nigeria.

She encouraged Nigerian authorities to guarantee that the cash recovered be utilized to the three projects agreed upon by the parties.

"I believe teachers would hesitate before joining a strike. Government actions are not arbitrary. There is a provision that states that there will be no remuneration if there is no job.

Naturally, ASUU's response has elicited the expected feelings. No serious country in the world treats its scholars the way Nigeria does, claimed Emmanuel Osodeke, the country's president. The federal government, he argued, "mandated the ongoing strike and pushed it to linger," therefore ASUU was not to be held responsible for the action. Oh, right! On behalf of ASUU, the government proclaimed the strike!

To be fair, though, this is just the other side of the story, as the minister himself claimed that ASUU was foolish for frequently going on strike at the drop of a hat, despite the government's valiant efforts to support education with incredibly meager funds. Realistically, neither side is being honest.
