tit: i thought the mastercard logo was on the e-id card.

so the problem is that employees of mastercard took part in the project?
though i think a wholly nigerian company could deliver this service, where would we draw the line on "foreign" involvement?
the database software, access or oracle, etc is likely a "foreign" software.
You people amaze me, where were the Nigerian companies when NIMC was looking for partnership. Now they have gotten it right and people want to complain

Educate yourself about the National ID card and NIMC. In case you cant do the research, see below

360command: My take on this is really bad. Having a foreign brand commercial company logo on our national Id card is like obtaining a foreign picture(image) and placing it on our postage stamp when we are suppose to be using our own local images set in Nigeria on our postage stamp. So, linking our data to the hands of MasterCard is something I do not feel OK about. At least, let us have a national pride of our own.
Instead of "feelings" or "opinions". Educate yourself about the National ID card and NIMC with FACTS

nateevs: You are obviously one of those who think identity theft only has only to do with money. Have you ever thought that through identity theft, you could be implicated in a crime?

It is not the fact that Mastercard has a copy of the database, it is rather the fact that the govt is not unwilling to pass national database details, without our consent, to private institutions. This means that with the right amount of money, the database is for sale. So for instance, companies that have links with terrorist organizations, but the right amount of money in the name of sponsorship can procure this database. These kind of companies have no imperative to keep your data safe. But never mind, it's a good initiative as it looks fancy on the outside.

When in 5 years, a number of people are wanted by the FBI because replicas of their electronic details were found on a registration database of terrorist organizations, then we will look back and wonder if this truly was a good initiative.

Sometimes, the implication of a project going wrong may be the reason for it not being good. Not because it isn't good itself.
Educate yourself. There are stringent laws and regulations in place for NIMC

enigmaotr: National ID Card should be just that and nothing else. Do you understand that now?
So you'd expect me to submit my ID Card to any Government Authority for any purpose if my financial details are linked to it? Do you know you may be mandated to make photocopies of your ID card sometimes? Please, I need a photocopy of your ATM Card for demonstration if you don't know the difference between ID cards and ATM cards
They tried it as just that since the 70s, where did that get us?

This National ID Card is coming and there is nothing you can do to stop it. Get educated about it

Chylo: This is the beginning of integrating the one world government in Nigeria. Once USA has the electronic information of ALL Nigerians, it would be quite easy to implement the law that without the card, you cant buy or sell. It has been prophesied already though, so its inevitable.

End time tinz...
Not everytime everything is religion, sometimes just do some research

emmatok: You still dont get it, MasterCard is a commercial entity just like VISA and VERVE.
I have Cards on all the payment platforms(MasterCard,VISA and VERVE).

Its it totally wrong to force MasterCard on all nigerian NID holders.
Which means millions of transactions from nigeria NID holders will be going to MasterCard alone.

Why not allow Nigerians to choose which payment system(MasterCard,VISA or VERVE) they want on their cards.
It is not being forced on Nigerians. Please do some research.

Rhea: What good is a national ID card in an illiterate population living in darkness in a country plagued by war?
Reduction in Ghost workers
Targeted government subsidy will now get to the masses
We can now verify who you are
Proper planning for social benefits
Every Nigerian now has financial access

Nigeria has to start from somewhere, step by step. NIMC is doing a good job

emmatok: I am looking at this issue from a business standpoint.
Giving MASTERCARD 15 million Nigerians is not a small deal.

MASTERCARD is not an NGO, they are out to maximize profit from this deal.
Thats the WALL-STREET style.
Why didn't the government liberalized the system(allowing other payment platform) from the beginning.
Giving Nigerians option to choose which payment platform they want.

I am surprised that Nigeria own INTERSWITCH and QUICKTELLER were not involved.
It bugs me when people wont take time do some simple research

Are you surprised? All documents usually have some form of expiry e.g bank cards, passport, rent lease

keyremotes: A very close friend of mine who is a top banker was very correct when he told me last week about this ATM/ID card plan.
It not a very good idea to do this. I beleive National ID Cards are meant to be stand alone documents without collaboration with any corporate body.
Can you back up with evidence that it is not a good idea? For the very first time since the 70s, we finally have a chance at National ID that works and even corporate companies are willing to put their reputation on the line for

arresa: Is this a National ID Card?

Don't you mean VISA/MasterCard ATM Debit Card?

Imagine a common commercial bank having access to critical National/Your data. Get this card at your own risk.

Only in Nigeria..
Do some research before opening your mouth, subjective opinion will only lead to misinformation and that is bad for everyone
