PoliticsRe: Buhari’s Integrity Increases Power Supply, Says APC: Punch by CriticalThought: 3:21pm On Aug 21, 2015
Take a look Nigerians; this is how stupid APC thinks you are. Integrity increases power supply, if that is the case, why did it not stop our currency from falling? They don’t have power minister or any policy on how to improve the sector talk less of even doing the work but they increased supply. Let us be watching this change
PoliticsRe: Economy can’t sustain subsidy – Kachikwu, NNPC boss: Vanguard by CriticalThought: 3:13pm On Aug 21, 2015
grandstar:
Unfortinately for you, it going to happen.

Buhari listens to professional advise and that why he has been employing technocrats. He seems to like putting square pegs in square holes.

Conditional Cash Transfers are the way to go in helping the poor. Give poor women with children i.e. N5,000 monthly f they send thir children to school.

Such schemes have been shown to make a huge impact on the poor and its a good return on money send. Fuel subsidies discourage investment in the oil sector and the subsidies mainly benefit the rich who really don't need it.

There are no subsidies in Benin Republic and their people are not dead. Food is even cheaper there

Government should slash import duty on food. This can also help the poor and drive growth
“Conditional cash transfers are the way to go in helping the poor . . .” let me stop you right there, jobs and education will help the poor. The 5000 naira you suggested, who is going to foot the bill? We don’t even have a proper tax paying base and you want to come and practice socialism here.

Watch everyone claim poor the minute you start giving handouts, we need to focus on private sector input in the education and petroleum industry with proper FG regulations of course. Let the free market work with proper policies and watch Nigeria rise to the top
I do agree with you that subsidy should be removed, because our economy can’t sustain it but the stark reality is that more than 50% of Nigeria population is poor and the minute you remove subsidy, prices of petroleum products and inevitably the price of doing business will rise and they won’t be able to afford it

When the common man cannot afford basic goods and services, the nation is in trouble

I do not believe PMB listens to professional advice, who are his advisers? Let’s say he does, can he comprehend? After ruling Nigeria in the 80s, what did he do to improve himself apart from contesting in elections? Anyways this is a conversation for another day.

PoliticsRe: Buhari Orders IG To Reduce Policemen Attached To Dignitaries by CriticalThought: 9:28pm On Aug 20, 2015
Police should not be in any way attached to dignitaries, all protection detail work should be covered by DSS, when the dignitaries move about, they should liase with the police in that state to figure out logistics and speaking of police

If you want the police force to work, what you have to do is simple

State police , I have said it times without number, those politicans in Abuja can never know your environment more than you that is living there. Let governors be in charge of the police for each state and as usual the navy, army and airforce with the FG

This will inevitably force Nigerians to take elections more seriously, when other states are flourishing, low crime rate, civil order etc will you now go and support a foolish candidate

Police men and women must be living in the same area they work. They wont misbehave because they know where you will find them

Change police uniform, consider the weather for crying out loud, black colored material retains more heat than any other material, go with light blue or something else

Benefits & Pension, police must be well paid if you want bribery to be reduced, if you want them to put their live on the line to serve and protect, if they have a livable wage and a pension to fall back on in retirement, all will be well

Good day to you all

That's why I'm considering leaving my job so I can put my all into it to enable me grow by God's grace.
It’s a really tough decision you have to make, consider the pros and cons of success and failure, do you also have an emergency fund built up to live on and take care of expenses

I assume you will have a mentor in the business to steady your hand in the infancy days

I wish you the best and I sincerely hope you make it, we need more job creators in this country

No where in your write up did you mention anything about a business plan. Do you have one? Have investors looked at it in order to give you advice, feedback and funding?
I strongly urge you to start from there
When you create a business plan, it will critically allow you to think about all the things relating to your business idea and determine the feasibility
PoliticsRe: Buhari Constitutes Advisory Committee On Anti-corruption by CriticalThought: 8:37pm On Aug 10, 2015
Fighting corruption is easy but the work is hard, First off PMB must be willing to accept that his generation is a lost cause, those people have lived with it for years, how exactly do you want to change that. He must focus on the Fashola generation and below. One must ask how. I will tell you how we fight corruption in Nigeria.

1. Free and Fair media - do you know politicians own tv stations and news papers, how will you ever know the truth when they can bend it anyway they please, we need competition in this space so as to ensure the public has various avenues to get their information, in addition to that, corporations and politicians should never be allowed ownership in this space

2. Judicial reform - no one follows the rule of law and given how far we have fallen, it does not take prophet to know most of our legal professionals are "on the take" as well. We need stricter rules, regulations and penalties for people who are supposed to uphold our laws and be the lat hope for the common man.

3. Financial audits - some MDAs do this now but enough attention is not paid to it, all MDAs should be audited twice a year by both a local and international audit agency, the results should be published on tv and newspaper for the public to see.

4. State police - it bothers me how some politicians in Abuja think they know better than those on ground about how the police should interact with their community. Every state should have their own police force interacting with the public in their state, with this in place, the police cannot misbehave, we know where they live, we know who is in charge, we can lodge complaints in person and most of all if you work where you live, you are more likely to treat people and your environment with respect.

5. Educational reform - an uninformed and uneducated citizenry is exactly what politicians want, it makes it easy for them to get away with their looting amongst other things. When you have an educated public, they are socially conscious. It makes politicians work hard for your vote and they serve you better. It inspires innovation, growth, healthy living and prosperity

6. BYOF - gone are the days of states sucking other states dry, everyone brings something to the table, this keeps everyone honest, you can trade for stuff with other states and abroad, leftovers can feed the people within the state and allow for saving for a rainy day

7. Transparency - I think we can all agree that there are a lot of shady things that go on in this country, we need to be open especially in our political process and towards the public, we want to know it all. It may not be pretty but we want to keep our leaders accountable, we want policies and procurement to be open to the public, nothing should be hidden unless its national security sensitive

8. No more Military presidents - I am not saying you cant have a president with a military background but when one comes for the seat of power, we as a people must inspect his life and policies, the military has done enough damage to civilian life, they should go and damage our enemies outside the country, we have a joint chief of staffs to help with military advice and all that, so military experience is not necessary.

9. Made in Nigeria - Almost everything you buy in the market place is imported, this needs to be reversed quickly, when we buy foreign made goods, we are moving our hard earned money out of our economy and giving it other countries to help sustain their jobs, profit and economy, we need to strategically wane ourselves off this oyinbo mentality.

10. No more foreign aid - If someones is going to give me money everyday, there is no point of me going to work. Foreign aid makes us lazy, in addition, oyinbo does not give anything for free. As they are giving us anything they want something in return.

11. Separation of church and state - we have used religion to cover our eyes and replace faith in things were common sense should come first, leave religion out of the laws of this country, it does not help anyone

We know what to do to fight corruption but are we willing to make the sacrifices. Have a good week all

Look at Nigeria now and when the program first started, NYSC is not working.

PoliticsRe: Buhari Orders Takeover Of Nigerian Airspace From Ghana by CriticalThought: 3:36pm On Aug 06, 2015
Notice the language used around PMB. It is always PMB ordered, or PMB handed down directives. Is this a dictatorship or a democracy? Is the idea of a national carrier nice? Yes, but it is not a priority. What we need now is more players in the aviation industry, it will raise competition and drive prices down while at the same time raising the level of air travel services in this country.

PMB should be reaching out to the private sector instead, the focus is on national carrier, where is the money going to come from ? We still have cows crossing runway. Lets focus on what is more important, private sector involvement in everything with proper government regulation.

How about ensuring that children should learn about

Financial management
taxation
farming
saving for retirement
how to use a computer

So just because people dont vote for the winning party, therefore they should be discarded and punished, is that it?

Jobs/VacanciesRe: An Urgent Decision On A Job Offer by CriticalThought: 4:50pm On Jul 30, 2015
Anonymous1900:
Hello Everyone

Let me start by saying this is not an opportunity to judge or criticize my decisions or lack of it there of. I would also try to be as open and forthcoming as possible regarding all information to help you offer any opinions either from personal experience of inferred ideas.

I already have a direction am inclined to lean towards but its not set in stone and am very much open to ideas from others (I actually welcome it as i like to be thorough and get all the information i can have before making decisions)

I was recently offered a position in Nigeria due to start in a month at the latest however i am currently rounding off a research program in the united states (6 months to finish). The prospective employer will not defer the position till i finish in 6 months time. I had interviews with the vice president of the company when i was in Nigeria last year and a couple of other interviews but i guess due to the instability of the economy (elections and all), the offer never materialized till now. i consider the offer a place to start and while I cant be specific about the exact figure here, its upwards of 250k/month after Tax.

Before you make your decisions based on the offer or my current academic situation, here is a little about me. I have a BSc (Nigeria), MSc (Uk) and MEng (USA).... All in engineering (so i wont consider the figure impressive however its not an entry position and that is my basic pay so there are other benefits). i have paid work experience in the Uk and US and took up an unpaid work experience in an Oil & gas servicing company in Nigeria for about 6 months. needless to say i am well educated but without enough experience in my chosen field and this offer hopes to fill that void.

if you also want to ask why am i not eager to come back to Nigeria? the economy seems fairly unstable now, Iran deal is sure to devastate the oil sector further and destabilize the Nigerian economy even more for those that understand the vicissitudes of the Iran deal. I do have access to getting residency papers in the USA which will coincide with the time i finish my research or a few months after without doing anything shady or sinister (most of my family are here anyway). I am also fully aware that with or without papers, jobs are not automatic any where but you will agree with me that its a little easier abroad than in Nigeria. a good example is the current offer i am considering where i still needed an introduction to setup the interviews and even though i did all the grunt work, i wont have even gotten in the door without knowing someone. The company as a matter of policy does not even advertise positions.

A little about the company: international company with huge investment portfolio in the millions of dollars, where its based should not be important but its on the island. cant reveal more than that about the company.

please let me know what you think or what you would do in my shoes. Also i would be happy to answer any questions that help you offer better advise provided its something i can reveal

Thanks in advance
Don't be swayed by the job offer, there will always be jobs out there

First step is to finish your studies, then ensure you have a green card. The GC will give you that flexibility to go in and out as you please. You will now have access to both the Nigerian and US market.

PoliticsRe: Buhari's Planned Probe Of Only Jonathan Administration And The "Far Past" by CriticalThought: 9:35pm On Jul 23, 2015
Can we all agree on some points

Nigeria has a lot of movers and shakers (both good and bad). The bad ones have been and are still in government.

Is it within PMBs right to probe the past government? Sure, but we all know the optics of that is bad. Why? because they dont want to probe older administrations.

They want to go this route because PMB knows he cannot bring down IBB, OBJ, Danjuma etc without bringing down himself. Just imagine putting someone like OBJ in jail, do you honestly think he will willingly "obey the rule of law" He will let everything out

While PMB is probing GEJ and he doesnt want to go into the far past, Tinubu is fair game right?, if he says no, its a witch hunt, if he says yes, all Tinubu needs to do is to show the money trail that led PMB to Aso Rock then "I belong to everybody and I belong to nobody" has a big problem

Regardless of how you see it, there is a deep rot in the system, do you punish new school embezzlers and leave the old ones who started it all and thought the news ones, do you go after the old ones and implicate yourself? sometimes I think the Jerry Rawlings approach works best

Just perform house cleaning ( IBB, OBJ, Danjuma, Atiku, Saraki, Tinubu, Gowon, Abdulsalam, Shagari, Rotimi, Rochas, Alamieyeseigha, Nyako)

None of them should be around

Get rid of all these people in a space of 3 days. rewrite the constitution to fit present day Nigeria and ensure punishment for corruption is very harsh

Sit back, relax and watch this country prosper
