Politics / Re: Aisha Buhari: President Buhari Surrounded By ‘Strangers' - Guardian by CriticalThought: 4:25pm On Oct 12, 2016
I want to laugh but I won’t because when I warned a lot of people that PMB would be the wrong choice, they didn’t believe. GEJ wasn’t exactly the best president but he was not a member of the military boys cabal. He was going to be the president in recent history who had no strings on him if you know what I mean. Problem is he wasn’t bold enough to push the bad eggs away from him and shut down corruption completely.

As for PMB, he has failed to realize on time that democracy is a 2 edged sword. Those who got you to the top will eventually want something in return, this is politics and nothing is free. Jagaban and friends got PMB to the top and PMB believed his aura of WAI would put them at bay. This is not the military days and most top dogs in the party don’t fear him like before. Madam Aisha can be worried all she wants, but you cant play with dirt and expect not to be stained in the long run. There are bad eggs in Abuja and they will be there as long as APC is running the presidency.

If things continue the way they are, there is no reason for APC to put him on the ticket in 2019, absolutely no reason, if anything, the party should be planning ahead to figure out a far better candidate
Education / Re: Why Is Student's Loan Not Obtainable In Nigeria? by CriticalThought: 9:16pm On Oct 11, 2016
Goddys:
your post is quite illuminating. At your last paragraph, do you imply there is a sinister motive or well-orchestrated move by some bad eggs to keep our education sector where it is today? Education they say is the key to success. Could there be a western influence in what is happening in our education sector so that we don't have the standard of life they have?

At some point in time, I believe those 2 conditions which you have mentioned played a role in the Nigerian education sector we have today. By 2 conditions, I am referring specifically to British colonial influence in addition to the Nigerian elite influence.

If you take a step back and look at what education was during the colonial days, you will notice that education was highly based on culture and tradition, mostly in the southern parts. In the north, Islam as a religion played a huge orientation in education. If I still remember correctly, Christian missionaries arrived in Southern Nigeria in the 1800s and with them, came western education. Now since the North is landlocked, missionaries didn’t exactly have a choice in getting there. I have always wondered, what if Northern Nigeria was accessible to the missionaries early on, could the influence of western education have changed minds and hearts and prevented a lot of things that have occurred today.

I honestly think not, we would still find ourselves in the same place today because of one key factor, the British. Southern Nigeria was more focused on how you could benefit yourself and your community but Northern Nigeria always had a focal point, you had to look up to a figure and their interpretation of religion e.g Emir, Sardauna. The British liked the Northern style of leadership and indirect rule because it was easier to control and to make sure this hold lasted, they stopped the spread of Christianity into the North. An uneducated society is a gullible society and if you just listen to what the pastor or Imam tells you, all will be well. In addition to this, if the colonial government gave aid to missionary schools and the likes, the North didn’t get any

What even further complicated the matter was the British trying to setup 3 forms of education, traditional, qur’anic and western education. The idea was that eventually even though both North and South were moving at a different pace, they could coexist. While this could work in theory, It wasn’t exactly practical, the French learned the same thing, the English learned the same thing, but Nigeria, well, education was different depending on which part of the country you were in. Fast forward a few years and you begin to notice the educational gap and success between the North and the South.

You see, western education focused on human ability as opposed to spiritual hope but Islamic education was different and as such did not place heavy focus on human ability plus they did not get as much support for it from the colonial masters.
So to answer your question about western influence in the education sector, If they had allowed the missionaries access to the North without having to teach Christianity, we would be in a better place. Also, without the inclusion of traditional education, the loss of identity becomes prevalent (e.g breaking kolanut, market days, when to pray, how to greet etc). The west did enough to get what they wanted; I don’t think they anticipated the consequences of their actions to turn out like this

As for the Nigerian elite, I do think there is a sinister move by bad actors to keep Nigeria where it is educationally. We have had more than 40 different ministers of state for education including education ministers of Nigeria. If you look into the profiles of some of these individuals, you will see they had no business in the ministry of education
Take for example, Richard Akinjide, his background was law and politics, yet he was minister of education for 2 years. How does his background help in setting education policy for future generations?
Another example Jubril Aminu, professor of cardiology, background in medicine was minister of education for 4 years, I find it difficult to see the correlation
Take Sunday Afolabi who was minister of interior in June 1999 under the Obasanjo government and before that the minister of education but what did he do in private sector, Accounting. How does that concern education policy?

For donkey years, they have tried to put a square peg in a round hole and even when they found a round peg, those folks where chased ways under the guise of fighting corruption etc. If you don’t have the right people and a strong institution, then we are all wasting our time
Education / Re: Why Is Student's Loan Not Obtainable In Nigeria? by CriticalThought: 5:51pm On Oct 11, 2016
Goddys:
I sat in deep thought with many things running through my mind trying to grapple the reason why things and state of affairs are 'specially' harder in Nigeria.

One of the things my mind was ruminating on was the absence of Student loan in Nigeria financial institutions to help students who are financially handicapped. I have read on the internet, magazines and other publications where it was highlighted on the availability of such loans to students in other climes.

It is glaring that Nigeria government is not doing enough when it comes to its responsibility towards education sector and this can be seen in the light of the above position. A society that does not value education is no better than a barbaric society of neanderthal era. Thus the need for revolution in Nigeria education sector.

Goddys, great question. As you may well know, any loan paid out will be returned with interest. No financial institution will give out loans if they don’t believe those loans can be fully paid back, interest and all. Now let us apply the Nigerian factor, if you add in student strikes, high unemployment for the youth, and an economy in recession, etc. You can start to see why it would be difficult to justify giving out student loans because there’s almost no avenue for the students to pay it back.
I will go one step further and make suggestions on how we could possibly fix this. First things first

1. Policy and framework

We need to total educational reform from kindergarten to university. We need to research, find and study model frameworks from developed countries and tweak it to work in our society. If we don’t train the younger members of society properly, there is no future for this country.

2. Student loan financing

You will always have the poor in any society, in order to give them a fighting chance, they need an education and this needs to be paid for by someone. This is where the state and federal government step in. They have to guarantee the loans to some extent. What do I mean by this? We have to provide an incentive for financial institutions to loan to students and one convincing way would be, if the student can’t pay back, the government is on the hook for it, which inevitably mean we have to grow our tax base

3. Forgiveness plans

We want everyone educated and being a useful member of society, now some people will never be able to pay their loans back, this is where the federal and state government can comes in and say go work in some underpopulated place for x number of years and each year x amount comes of your loans or when you start working a certain amount of your salary goes towards your loans.

4. Legislation

House of state and senate must actively speak about and advocate through words and legislation the need for a well-educated citizenry

I could go on and on, but here is an indisputable fact, the individuals that spoilt our education sector did an excellent job. If you are to busy trying to survive, what time will you have to fight for your rights or fight against corruption. We must investigate where we got it wrong starting from the days of British rule till date

What bothers me the most about the PMB administration is those that blindly support it.

The only thing worse than those that dont vote in a democratic society is a stupid voter for they will be the ones to bring down a nation.

APC supporters will have you believe that PMB will save us all from the years of misrule by PDP as if the same miscreants from PDP didnt join APC. A wolf in sheeps clothing is still a wolf

PMB promised asset declaration, we are still telling story. What about subsidy that didnt 'exist', 2016 budget part 1- 4

Everything is storrryyyyy.

As a side note if they are probing GEJ, they damn well better be probing Tinubu, IBB , Amaechi, OBJ unless of course they want to tell us more story

Your lovers father does not accept you

Your ‘lover’ beats you

Your relationship with your lover has broken down 3 times

Your own family has now said NO

Look, the signs are there, it will hurt to leave the guy but you will be better for it. If he is beating you now what will happen when you marry? And you are still claiming love? What type of home are you planning to build with such a person?

You need to look at where you are going in life, ask yourself if that ‘lover’ will make you better and help you get there; all the external factors are saying NO

Notice I did not say accept your ex back, there is a reason he is your ex. You know why you walked away

Your best option is to walk away from both ‘lover’ and ex, it will be hard but you can build yourself back up and the right person will walk in. At the end of the day the decision is still yours.

Stay strong and good luck

This administration is not ready to govern. You see the fluctuation in oil prices and instead of you to diversify and look at other areas of the economy to grow, increase exports and gain revenue, you decide to double down and build more refineries despite the fact that we can’t even maintain the ones we have currently
Is this not madness? Then please look at one of the comments, the minister made

So he is not even sure that the refineries will even work after 4 YEARS IN POWER

We can be thankful that our Government has the boldness to admit they were wrong...and make the necessary changes.

Anyone opposing this better recall that we are not masters of our destiny here. We need oil to be 123 USD per barrel....and right now, it sin't even at 50USD. Time we faced reality.

GEJ should have saved....but that means we would have had to take this decision next year.

Theres a part of me that believes the problem isn't with who is president, in fact whoever sits on the thrones does not matter. Its the people around him that the president must work with is the main issue. Just look at any village setting in Nigeria. There will be a king(Oba, Emir, etc) and then the king makers, elders. The power of the king comes from those who put him there and there will always be people to do that.

Just like PMB, he only ascended because he was allowed on the ticket and the whole North had to practically agree on it. His rule will only be fruitful if he can make the king makers, elders happy while not pissing off the village. Its a difficult task because what the village wants is different from what the king makers want

It just so happens that a lot of the king makers and elders in Nigeria are corrupt but for PMB to ascend he had to work with such, if he then turns around to cut them off, they will make life difficult for him. So the real questions is how will PMB succeed with so many forces ready to destroy him if he does not cooperate

You would think a man that ran for presidency more than 3 TIMES has a vision of where he wants the country to go but all indications but to the indisputable fact that he does not know what he is doing

Why are we so satisfied with mediocrity? The world is a global stage now, as a country we have to be in top shape lest we are left behind. Anytime we borrow money from any other country, it is never in our benefit because we will always pay more than we borrowed

All these politicians know the right thing to do but are content in lining their pockets rather than distributing wealth equally. What even becomes more annoying is past leaders like OBJ opening his mouth to complain about Nigeria. He is part of the mess and he is making noise

PMB has the opportunity to go down as one of the greatest presidents in Nigerian history if he can just provide basic amenities, Nigerians are not even picky as we have learned to survive on little to nothing,

For once they just need to do the right thing, put country first ahead of all selfish interests.

Infact you might even want to include almost all the norther senators, since most of them don't believe in gender equality and want to marry young girls
All service chiefs since 1999

Sometimes when I think about our country, It keeps me up late at Night. I wonder how our so called "leaders" obey the rule of law outside the country but as soon as they are on Nigerian soil, they don't care. I wonder why they are so comfortable with the Nigerian masses living in abject squalor. Do they not care that they are destroying the only place we can really call home for future generations

I wonder why in this day and age, corruption has eaten so deep into the core and why it only seems Africans are generally the ones that display a lot of this traits. Western countries also have some corruption but their institutions are strong enough to snuff it out. Granted, some of this issues in Africa and Nigeria in particular can be traced to the influence of western imperialism, but its been more than 50 years now. Why can't we get it right?

I wonder how we can be blessed with so much resources beneath our feet but struggle to harness it. I look at the scriptures and wonder if there is a curse placed on the black man from the old days. What can be so difficult about a country government providing electricity, good roads, good justice system, free and fair elections, strong public universities

I wonder if we practice the right form of government, is democracy truly for Nigeria, is a benevolent dictator what we need or perhaps democratic socialism. How do we stop the previous generations from feeding the younger ones with the post war hate and cancerous corruption which seeks to consume everything good in this country

I wonder why when we have domestic issues, our leaders run to chatham house in UK or brookings institution in the US, if we need money we don't look at how we can increase our IGR, instead we look to loans from the world bank or IMF.

The IMF and world bank have been loaning money for decades, which of the countries that they gave money to has improved, which of those countries can be called 'developed'

I look at PMB and wonder how a man who was head of state in the 80s can come back now to "bring change". Is it any surprise that AKPD a political consulting firm run by David Axlerod, former adviser to President Obama. There is nothing wrong with working with a consulting firm but they tried to keep it quiet and Axlerod has close ties to the current US administration. Isn't that indirect meddling in our democracy by the white house, another name for it would be regime change. In this case GEJ went quietly.

Are we truly an independent country and can we really get rid of corruption. Western countries are forever happy with the status quo as long as they get the raw materials to live well but for those of us who hunger to see a greater Nigeria, what are we willing to sacrifice to make it so?

The pendulum swings both ways, maybe one day it will swing in favour of Nigeria.

However, when I am in Nigeria, I have to ask why its only the brand of Dangote that is being pushed very heavily. In as much as we want Dangote to succeed and represent Nigeria well, he is still a business man who wants to make profit. It is the responsibility of our government to ensure that they dont give the perception of supporting one Nigerian brand over the other and realistically making sure that corporations never have too much power that can be used to influence the Nigerian masses negatively. Erisco needs to try and lobby much more, there must be something which Dangote does better (in terms of lobbying) which others aren't doing. I refuse to believe the favour Dangote gets is purely because of his ethnic group or religion cos he also enjoyed those favours under OBJ and GEJ and his tribesman like BUA also lamented the same discrimination. If the new erisco plant can really meet a substantial amount of local demand, then the best favour he needs now from government is a total ban on importation of tomato paste; I'm sure the present government would be happy to do that. We need more Eriscos though.

The underlying issue has always been money, anyone who is astute about Nigerian politics knows money buys elections. That is the case all over the world and it is more evident here in Nigeria. Dangote has an even greater advantage than just the money because of this ethnicity and the fact that the masses love him despite his underhanded dealings

Dangote is a billionaire, there is no Nigerian president that will not grant him an audience. He went as far as purportedly contributing 200 million naira to the first campaign of OBJ, there has never been a level playing field for anyone wanting to compete at the Dangote level and in the long un, it will be bad for Nigeria

The bedrock of our democracy is the rule of law and that means we have to have an independent judiciary, judges who can make decisions independent of the political winds that are blowing. - Caroline Kennedy

We say we practice democracy and graduate hundreds of lawyers every year but those same lawyers enter the arena with hope and wide eyed optimism only to find out what the status quo is and they fall in line allowing the viciously corrupt cycle to continue. If we want Nigeria to succeed and I don't mean on paper, we need proper legal reform

From an educational standpoint, ethics must be taught and taken seriously in school and even in the courts, harsh punishments for members of the judicial system who are corrupt and or unethical.

Judges must be clean before lawyers will be clean
lawyers will be clean before police can become clean
police must become clean before it can properly enforce the law
once the law is enforced, prison will become a serious issue
which will then force the citizenry to behave

only then will we have a country we will be truly proud of

This leads me to ask What are all the Northern traditional elders and governors during year in and year out that allows their states look like they just came out of a civil war.

It should be obvious at this point that their religion is having a negative effect on their people. I agree with you. But the part where you make it look as if whites are the problem of Nigeria /Africa is a hard pill for me to swallow... I think it's the greed, hate and unquenchable thirst for a black man to Lord over a fellow Blackman is the reason not white people..

If black man loves his fellow man he wont be used...but then black man loves to blame others for his mistakes and shortcomings... Even the current worshipped President/leader never took responsibility for disasters under his watch..he will prefer to blame others...so he can appear smelling like rose.

You make solid points but I disagree that the black man is entirely to blame for all his problems, some of the issues Africa suffers today can be traced to the intervention of white people. However, what bothers me more today is the inability for us to learn from these issues, I worry that Europe and America must be holding so much blackmail or military threats over our heads that we just cave in.

Its amazing how IPOB/wailers hold on to any criticism of d PMB govt, such ghouls!

They are d first to shout dictatorship, yet want a Tanzania like rule?

PMB said no more disobeying traffic rules, they were screaming eye service!

PMB is trying to catch looters legally, they are crying witch-hunt!

Pls, make up ur minds on what u want! Its either u'll wait patiently for changi to manifest, if it doesn't, vote PMB out in 2019, or pack down to Tanzania till then! Dazzol!

For ur info, GMB was smuggling looters in 1983! Using whips to instill discipline! Cancelled foreign imports to try encourage local industries! All these and much more, but wailers like u were jubilating when he was overthrown, now when he claims to be a reformed democrat(which u'll still insist is a lie) u're comparing him to a lesser version of his 1983 self??! B.S.

Dude what are you talking about

If PMB wants to catch looters, he should start from his own party. There is no way that it will not be seen as a witch-hunt when you target everyone else but wont touch those around you

Why should people wait patiently for change to manifest, wasn't GEJ insulted every day during his presidency. PMB will have the same all the way to 2019
