The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) yesterday in Abuja called for the sack of Education Minister Dr. Sam Egwu and the Executive Secretray of the National University Commission (NUC) Professor Julius Okojie. ASUU accused the minister and his cohorts of destroying the country’s university system by confusing President Umaru Yar’adua on the terms of the agreement “jointly reached” as it affects state-owned universities. University of Abuja ASUU chairman Dr. Abu Malam led members on a protest march in Gwagwalada, Abuja against the stalemate in negotiations between the Federal Government and all university unions who have been on strike since June 2009. He said, “We are saying that the government has to sack this man and bring in someone who is more serious. Remember what Gani’s son said, that his father’s wishes were that the minister of education should be sacked. So, we stand by that statement.” The union said the recent intervention of the President via the Vice President would have been fruitful but was scuttled by the government team who walked out on ASUU saying that they can no longer continue with the negotiations.
