CareerPorte: 10 Commandments of Data Science
1. Focus mainly on solving the problem and not on tools, technologies, and models.
2. Data will never be clean or easily available. Data gathering and cleaning will take 80% of your time and effort.
3. Don’t underestimate the power of Excel and SQL - they are still two of the most useful tools for data analysis.
4. Simple models such as Linear or Logistic Regression will be good enough for many problems. You don’t need neural networks to solve every problem.
5. Textbook solutions may not work for most of the practical problems. You will need to try new approaches and innovate as required.
6. Nobody can remember everything. On the job, you can always use Google, Stack Overflow etc.
7. Learn Data Visualisation and develop the ability to explain your key insights in simple terms - such skills will be very useful with non-technical and business stakeholders.
8. Learn PowerPoint and storytelling - people may not appreciate your great work if you can’t convince them with your story.
9. Data Science is evolving rapidly. Please learn continuously, else you may become obsolete soon.
10. Focus mainly on solving the problem and not on tools, technologies, and models. I lost two Job interviews just because I Underrated excel... lol. Naija recruiters don't care how good you are, as long as you can't use excel, they trash you! Don't joke with Excel, know this and know peace! |

HewlettPackard: I've told myself I can't be the expert I really want to be by watching videos, they are great resources of learning, agreed, but it's never enough.
Read books!
I'd take one good book over a 100 videos any day.
I remember when I started will SQL, after watching different videos tutorial, I felt like a king, thought I've known everything about the field, talking like that OP My naivety wasn't glaring until I picked up a book on it, I couldn't read past chapter 2, closed it, picked up another, went back to the previous, the cycle continues.
Imagine the time these processes takes, for various fields of study, and I still can't say to anyone that I've learnt SQL, because I know that, what I know is not up to 20% of what is covered in the field.
You took 1,2,3 udemy data science course, completed them and you think you are now a data scientist? bro your journey just started. well, if this is the case that means no one would be ripe for a job then, maybe you don't know that developers who built those programs we use are still consulting for help when they get stuck at times, even the best of the best with years of experience still log on to stackoverflow for help.... my point is, one can't "graduate" from programming school, just keep building on... and the best way to get better is to get a job and handle real world project on a daily basis, books are great, but videos are also enough to get an entry level job. |

BelieverDE: That's nice!
Do you know any relevant Data Analytics certification(s) like I said, IBM's Data science certification is cool, the best so far, and You can also try IIBA's Business Data Analytics Certification if you can afford it, just 575 dolls, highly respected and recognized... but I would advice anyone going for these to have a considerable experience first... if you really wanna climb the larger very fast, it is advisable to carry along PMI's Project Management Professional, with all these in one's bag, the sky is just the starting point. |

BelieverDE: Thanks for sharing, GreenDee. I would like to ask, is the Microsoft Data Analyst Associate certification worth it?
I went online to make research about it but some "HR managers" on quora and Reddit said it's not too relevant.
Ejiod and All, what's your take on this? Yes it's not too relevant if you are looking for a job at google or amazon, but it is a plus to your cv as far as naija job is concerned, if you can easily afford it, it's worth it. I'm also considering having it, at least for a start. Note, IBM data science certification still stands out among others. |

BelieverDE: I have seen job descriptions that requires knowledge of PowerBI and others that states "Knowledge of Tableau is compulsory"
By the way, what PowerBIcourse do you recommend for me? If you are following Job descriptions, you gonna learn all the packages in the world... don't mind them, you can't know it all, just learn the necessary ones... Tableau or PBI, not Tableau and PBI. check enterprise DNA on YouTube |

BelieverDE: Interesting!
Do you have links to the material(s) that helped you when learning?
I'm close to finishing the Statistics course with Excel that I have been learning. My next plan is to learn PowerBI & Tableau. Good move, just decide and settle for one, learning the two is not necessary. |

elvisgaga: Please Dahyormine, do justice to dauddy97 question because am getting the puzzle. thanks. Zabiboy what can u say about the above quotes? IMO, Power BI is Python and Excel combined, apart from ML. initially I learnt PBI using Kiril Eremenko's course on Udemy, he only treated visualisation, in 3days I was done and I felt like what's the hype about PBI since its only Drag and drop... lol I went back learning python till I was comfortable. I was making research, then i discovered I could do more with PBI. I went back and got another video on udemy like 5gig content. mehn this guy broke down PBI in and out. basically PBI is divided into 3parts, visualisation, Power Query and DAX... with Power query, you can manipulate and query data to taste. with DAX, you can carry out any data analysis calculation(This is deep). Formally, when I wanted to do any anything involving datetime analysis and Forecast, I would use Statsmodel's ARIMA in Python, and that could take average of 10lines of serious Code, when I came across PBI, I could forecast with 3-4 clicks... mehn I was stunned. most people don't know that one can Webscrape with PBI, you can do allota wonders with that monster package. I would advice everyone to take full advantage of it if you really wanna go deep in Data Analytics. you can contact me for materials or link to good materials. peace Edit: When it comes to Business Intelligence, it has Data modelling ability where you can link many Datasets together so they interact as one and so many more. |

dauddy97: @Zabiboy you list is correct but, I will tell him to focus on Python (Pandas, seaborn) and SQL the most. He can pick either Tableau or Power BI since both are visualization tools. Learning both isn't bad. Excel is compulsory. After that, he can start learning Machine learning. That's were the real game is. Sorry bro, Tableau/PBI are more than just visualisation tools, with only visualisation, you are missing over 80% of their functions! Peace! |

Kaycee54321: Does anyone freelance as a data analyst on upwork?
I opened an account there yesterday, have submitted proposals for three easy gigs using all the proposal writing tricks I know, yet I haven't gotten an offer. The pessimistic side of me is saying "Who will trust a Nigerian with his data?"
If anyone has freelancing experience on foreign sites, please I'd appreciate tips or advice.
And I just hope the dirty side of Nigeria is not about to rear its ugly head again and dent me once more... Upwork is highly competitive, and I don't think ur inability to land a gig is caused by u being a Nigerian, uptown is not like fiverr... I'm also there, trying to get something, don't give Up cos every hustler has a payday. |
