Joan Walsh the editor in chief is a christian. So another lie from.you that before you work there you smust be an atheist.

The story about the guy swallowed by a whale is a lie.

Investigation

More recently the facts have been carefully investigated by historian Edward Davis who pointed out many inconsistencies. The ship in the story is The Star of the East; a British ship by the same name existed and sailed during the time in which the incident allegedly occurred and could have been near the Falklands at the right time, but the real "Star of the East" was not a whaling vessel and its crew list did not include a "James Bartley".[1] Moreover, Mrs. John Killam, the wife of the Captain, wrote a letter stating that "there is not one word of truth in the whale story. I was with my husband all the years he was in the Star of the East. There was never a man lost overboard while my husband was in her. The sailor has told a great sea yarn." Davis suggested that the story may have been inspired by the "Gorleston whale", a 30-foot rorqual killed near Great Yarmouth shortly before in June 1891 that generated a lot of publicity.

While the veracity of the story is in question, it is physically possible for a sperm whale to swallow a human whole, as they have been known to swallow giant squid whole.[8][9

LIAR LIAR PANTS ON FIRE

Joan Walsh Is not a Christian. She is an Agnostic Deist and has left Salon since 2015 because they frustrated her out. She has slammed her old newspaper repeatedly for that. Since she was not in favor of much of how they wrote anything they frustrated her out and she is now with THE NATION MAGAZINE,

Before you can work for Salon you need to have an atheistic leaning.

Do you believe in the afterlife? Does your spirituality extend to that?

I think it’s more I-don’t-know. I can’t see it all ending completely; I think I am one of those people who believes in Something Else, but I don’t know what it is— a kind of Buddhist, we-are-all-united kind of oneness that we will rejoin or become conscious of that we don’t have. I sound like a nut! You’re making me sound like a nut!

As you make decisions, do you think about God?

I think as I’ve gotten older I definitely still pray but I don’t think of God as directing me in a particular direction. I don’t see it that way. I think prayer is very good for self-calming and as a way of organizing your thinking about what you want. I don’t know that I think it actually creates an outcome — not to get too touchy-feely about it — but just in case… I’m a little bit of a just-in-case prayer.

Stop lying for Atheism

Obviously you do not know that wikipedia is never an authority in these matters as they are simply a gathering of anyones ideas which your precious salon newspaper stole from and used as an authority in writing their false story debunking a true event.

A Notable Naval website authenticated the story and even cited it being documented in the British Admiralty and written on the tombstone of the dead James Bartly and you do not know that anything documented in the British admiralty is fact

The Admiralty was the government department [1][2] responsible for the command of the Royal Navy in the Kingdom of England, and later in Great Britain, and from 1709 [3] and until 1964 in the United Kingdom and former British Empire. Originally exercised by a single person, the Lord High Admiral, the Admiralty was, from the early 18th century onwards, almost invariably put "in commission" and exercised by the Lords Commissioners of the Admiralty, who sat on the Board of Admiralty.

No wonder he dedicated his small tabloid to disproving that true story as that would prove the Jonah tale was possible

Even if it was impossible... U would say, god was involved so he enlarged the throat... U believe in impractical stories that u didn't witness, I examine stories on a scientific and factual basis...
Ergo, it was impossible for Jonah to survive for three days in a whale's belly. U should have used the god excuse and not yet to prove the event scientifically because it was obviously a very bad idea

Oga as long as god was involved anything is possible. Enlarging the throat is the least of it all. Besides sperm whales already have enlarged throaats so what are you saying?

Science is beneath God and God does not subscribe to science...Science on the other hand is trying to understand the works of His hands.

Randomperson and dalaman i hope you are both reading

An interesting sidepoint is that Jonah says:

"Weeds were wrapped about my head
at the roots of the mountains." (2:5)

Geologist Harold L. Levin wrote:

"Eighteenth-century scientists had little knowledge of the topography of the ocean floors. They lived at a time when depth measurements were made by letting down a lead weight on the end of a rope. Not only was this method time consuming, but in the open ocean it was virtually impossible to prevent error from lateral drifting of the weight, or the ship, or both. As a result of these problems, only a limited number of soundings were made except in bays and offshore areas where such information was vital for safe navigation. Oceanographers interpreted the few measurements available as indicating that the ocean floors were monotonous flat plains. With the advent of continuous topographic profiles from echo-sounding devices, it was shown that the ocean floors are as irregular as the surface of the continents. Beneath the waves lay canyons deeper than the Grand Canyon, and mountain systems more magnificent than the Rockies."
(Levin 1981 p. 320

I don't imagine that Jonah saw the "roots of the mountains" in the Mediterranean Sea by peeking out of the mouth of the fish. Perhaps he guessed; perhaps he was "inspired". At any rate he got it right.

The blood temperature of a whale is about the same as a human's blood – 37 degrees centigrade. Inside the stomach it might be several degrees warmer. In addition there is the problem of digestive juices–would they have killed Jonah and digested him? A scientific answer seems unavailable. Would digestive juices with their digestive enzymes, for example, cease to flow if the whale were near death? Possibly the acidity of the stomach juices would also be unpleasant unless their secretion were also inhibited.

Acidity is measured on the pH scale which varies from 0 to 14. For example:

Concentrated nitric acid 0 Orange 3.5
Gastric secretion 1 Tomato 4
Lemon juice 2 Saliva 6
Stomach juice 2 Pure Water 7
Coca cola 3 Intestinal secretion 7.5
Vinegar 3 Sea Water 8

It shouldn't be too hard to do an experiment of placing a hand or finger in lemon juice, cola, or vinegar for varying intervals and seeing if any damage occurs.

Would there be breathable air in the stomach?

Macloskie (1942) argued that the whale has to expel superfluous water from its mouth after receiving food. In the process a creature trapped in the mouth might reach the laryngeal pouch below the larynx. The pouch is big enough to hold a human who would, in addition, use the whale's own air supply and have no worries about digestive juices. The Bible phrase "belly of the fish" should not count against this hypothesis since ancient peoples did not distinguish as many internal organs as we do today. In other words the entire front (=ventral surface) of a fish or whale might be referred to as the "belly".

Nowadays whales are classified as mammals. However, the phrase "great fish" would have been accurate enough and more understandable for a, mainly, rural audience which didn't differentiate many sea creatures.

As already stated, dying Sperm Whales often vomit out the contents of their stomach. Regarding the "fish" which swallowed Jonah the story reads:

"it vomited out Jonah upon dry land." (2:10)
Religion / Re: Why Do Atheists Shift The Burden Of Proof? by damogul: 9:39pm On Dec 17, 2016
Pinney (1964) quoted the Director of a Museum of Natural history:

"Many people asked me if the Bible story of Jonah is true. Could a man be swallowed by a whale? So I pushed my body partly down the throat of a dead sixty foot sperm whale. I could just squeeze through. A fat man couldn't have made it."

Many people did not believe Bartley, even though the captain and the whole crew swore that his tale was true. Scientists questioned Bartley, checking and rechecking all parts of his tale against his friends' statements. It got so bad that he dreaded any questions. Finally he was tested by a team of doctors. They reported that Bartley was a very strong man. It was possible for him to stay alive inside a whale. Their report seemed to provide the last bit of proof. Not all of Bartley's story was accepted by everyone. But, the fact that he had been swallowed by a whale was believed. His adventure was widely reported. For a while he was a famous man.

The Journal des débats (French for: Journal of Debates) was a French newspaper, published between 1789 and 1944 that changed title several times. Created shortly after the first meeting of the Estates-General of 1789, it was, after the outbreak of the French Revolution, the exact record of the debates of the National Assembly, under the title Journal des Débats et des Décrets ("Journal of Debates and Decrees"wink.

Published weekly rather than daily, it was headed for nearly forty years by Bertin l'Aîné and was owned for a long time by the Bertin family. During the First Empire it was opposed to Napoleon and had a new title imposed on it, the Journal de l'Empire.

During the first Bourbon Restoration (1813–14), the Journal took the title Journal des Débats Politiques et Littéraires, and, under the second Restoration, it took a conservative rather than reactionary position.[citation needed] Under Charles X and his entourage, the Journal changed to a position supporting the liberal opposition represented by the Doctrinaires (Guizot, Royer-Collard, etc.) (1827–1829).

The Journal des Débats was the most read newspaper of the Restoration and the July Monarchy, before being surpassed by Émile de Girardin's La Presse and later by Le Petit Journal. The many contributions established the Journal's reputation as a major influence on French culture, and especially French literature for the first half of the 19th century.

During the German occupation, the Journal continued to be published, which caused it to be suppressed after the Liberation of Paris in 1944.

his is an excerpt from another site.Research, particularly bya Bible-believing professor named EdwardDavis (http://asa.calvin.edu:80/asa/pscf.html| 19:53:53 Mar 16, 2003), ultimately shows beyond a reasonable doubt that the story is a hoax. Too many aspects of the story do not stand up to scrutiny. The alleged ship, “Star of the East,” was not a whaler. There was no fishing off the Falkland Islands in 1891. Bartley’s name never appeared on a manifest of the aforementioned ship. The captain’s wife said that her husband neverlost anyone overboard in all their years of marriage, and they were married in 1891."
the story was believed as a legend for years by countries on both sides of the Atlantic but has been shown to be scientifically impossible.. address these issues

The story as reported is that during a whaling expedition off the Falkland Islands, Bartley's boat was attacked by the whale and he landed inside the whale's mouth. He survived the ordeal and was carved out of the stomach by his peers when they, not knowing he was inside, caught and began skinning the whale because of the hot weather which would have rotted the whale meat. It was said that he was in the whale for 18 hours and it was also said that his skin had been bleached by the gastric juices, and that he was blind the rest of his life. He was, however, supposed to have returned to work within three weeks in some accounts. He died 43 years later and his tombstone in Gloucester says "James Bartley- a modern day Jonah."[3][4]

In 1896, an article was published in the New York Times that quoted a brief portion of this story, as told by Rev. William Justin Harsha, along with some initial observations.[5] This was followed about a week later by another article that briefly summarised some responses from readers,[6] followed by a third article by William L. Stone, who related a similar story involving a massive "man-eating shark."[7]

The French scientist De Parville published a report of the alleged incident in the Paris Journal des Débats in 1914.[1]

Look up on that scientists on wiki.

Chicago, IL – An Arkansas man is alive after being swallowed by a whale on Saturday while visiting the Shedd Aquarium. Jonah Anderson, 24, is being treated for mild dehydration at Chicago’s Mercy Medical Center after being regurgitated early this morning.

The incident happened while viewing the Beluga Whale exhibit at Shedd. Witnesses say the whale, Puiji, came out of the pool, grabbed Anderson, and proceeded to swallow him whole. Anderson remained unharmed inside the whale until this morning when he was spit back onto the viewing platform.

“This is the first time any of our whales have exhibited aggressive behavior,” Shedd’s vice president of communications Andrea Smalec tells us. “We frequently allow special guest to interact with the whales, our staff even occasionally swim with the whales. This is completely unexpected.”

Animal trainers tried unsuccessfully to extract Anderson from the whale during the three days. Anderson was able to communicate with outsiders through text message during the stay. Friends and family tell us that Anderson remained positive and relaxed during the time.

“He seemed really upbeat,” Jonah’s girlfriend Mary, who was with him on the trip, tells us. “Of course this is not the first time something like this has happened. We were on a boat tour outside San Francisco last year when a whale snatched him from the side. That one scared him a bit, this time it all seemed routine. Not sure why this keeps happening.”

Doctors expect to release Anderson from the hospital later today. He hopes to return to Arkansas to visit his cousin Daniel who is in critical condition following a fall into the lion exhibit at the Little Rock Zoo.
