Politics / Re: Governors Move To Hijack PDP From Jonathan by dandoki: 1:23pm On Apr 19, 2015
dodoniyi:
•Rivers, Delta, Akwa Ibom, may now finance party

Fresh woes may be on the way for President Goodluck Jonathan following his ill fated re-election bid.

Most of the governors elected on the platform of his party, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), are understood to be plotting to sideline him in their plan to rebuild the party.

The governors, outgoing and surviving, want to chart a new course for the party with them in the driving seat.

But they are also disposed to bringing in as many of those frustrated out by President Jonathan as possible, sources familiar with the development told The Nation in Abuja yesterday.

Barring any alteration of their plan, the governors are expected to go full blast from May 29, hijacking the party’s affairs from President Jonathan whose tenure terminates on that day.

One of those the governors have listed to bring back to the party under the reformation plan is former President Olusegun Obasanjo, who shredded his PDP membership card in the run up to the just concluded presidential election, and publicly campaigned against the President’s return to office for what he termed below par performance.

Also likely to be brought in is the Second Republic Vice President Alex Ekwueme, who engineered the founding of the PDP during the late Gen Sani Abacha regime.

Sources said yesterday that Friday’s public castigation of President Jonathan by Governor Babangida Aliyu of Niger State for causing the fall of the PDP from power in the elections, was not a co-incidence.

Aliyu who doubles as Chairman, Northern Governors Forum said in Minna that President Jonathan and PDP’s defeat in the elections was caused largely by his failure to keep to the alleged single term agreement he reached with the North on assumption of office.

Besides, the reformation plan is believed to have informed a recent meeting in Dutse, Jigawa State attended by Governor Sule Lamido of Jigawa, ex-Governor Orji Uzor Kalu and others.

“Some PDP governors, ex-governors and party leaders have started talking on how to revive the party and restore its glory as a democratic party,” said one source.

“It might involve doing away with the present crop of leaders in the party to restore the PDP to its pre-1999 era. Some of the present leaders of the party have been rated as ‘mere usurpers’ because they have destroyed it.

“One of the issues on the card is how to snatch the party from the grip of President Jonathan who brought in the present National Working Committee (NWC) which failed to sustain the party’s winning streak.

“We will not allow any individual to own the party anymore. Even if you are a former president, you have equal right as any member of the party. This is what has made the African National Congress (ANC) of South Africa to survive over the years, including the apartheid period.”

Another source said: “The reformation of PDP might be pioneered by some of the founding fathers of the party like Chief Ekwueme and other members of the Board of Trustees of the party.

“It might involve bringing in on board former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, former national chairmen of the party, ex-governors, past elected leaders and others who can help to revitalise the party.

“It is going to be a total overhaul of the party from the grassroots because we realised that we have really lost our goodwill and focus as a national party.”

Alhaji Atiku has repeatedly said he has no intention whatsoever to dump the All Progressives Congress (APC) for the PDP.

He has turned down several overtures from the leadership of the PDP to jump ship including a recent personal visit to his Abuja residence by President Jonathan.

The Nation also gathered that pro-Jonathan forces in the PDP are not prepared to give up.

They are said to have drawn up a revival plan of their own with President Jonathan as the rallying point.

They are looking up to the incoming governors of Akwa Ibom, Delta, Rivers states to bankroll the PDP revival project.

Lagos State was in the original plan but that is no longer possible with the loss of the party’s governorship candidate, Mr. Jimi Agbaje to the APC candidate, Mr. Akinwumi Ambode .

“Unless these rich states intervene in financing our party, we may not be able to fully recover,” a member of the NWC said.

He added: “You know we have never been in opposition, it will be difficult to survive.”

These people are just thinking in the cloud. How dare you to have even imagined Lagos State in your scheme scheme of things. What about the south east states

http://thenationonlineng.net/new/governors-move-to-hijack-pdp-from-jonathan/

These people are just thinking in the cloud. How they ever imagined bringing Lagas State in their system of thought is nothing but wonderful. Thank God they have woken up to realise to realise that they were only having a nightmare! Maybe they need someone to do some reality thinking for them: how about the south east states? You don't trust them enough to finance your party?

There definitely would be money. By the time all the looted funds in PDP hands are assembled the govt would not be short of funds to execute its programmes.

Obasanjo merely heard that this woman is in world bank and just brought her in to be minister of finance without enquiring what her job really was at the world bank. It turned out that as admin officer she knows nothing about economics and that was why OBJ supervised her very closely and changed her potfolio at a point. In his cluelessness Jonathan not only retained her but also gave her a blank cheque over the economy. She has commited all the wreckage that could possibly done, and that is why we are where we are today. She keeps talking with both sides of her mouth but the real truth will never come out, which is the havoch she and her boss have wrecked on the nation's economy. GEJ gave this woman a blank cheque to operate the economy and she ran it aground. Now she is in Wshinghton enuciating policies she could not practicalize in the over five years she was in complete control of the Nigerian economy. Perhaps her thinking is that if she spoke from the citadel of the World Bank she would suceed in getting the in-coming administration so mesmerised that they would renew her appointment. Ngozi Wahala its better you realise finally that your own done finish for Naija. You better remain in Washinghton for the rest of your gaulible life. Politics / Re: PDP Berates INEC, Others Over Polls-------guardian by dandoki: 9:34pm On Apr 15, 2015
itetemi:
THE Peoples Democratic Party has questioned the conduct of some INEC officials and security agencies in the last Saturday’s governorship and state assembly elections.
PDP National Publicity Secretary, Olisa Metuh in a statement on Monday said that the elections were characterised by widespread irregularities supported by certain INEC and security officials to the advantage of the APC and wondered if such officials were intimidated by APC’s blackmail and propaganda to deliver its candidates in the polls.
He said: “Evidences abound of widespread irregularities across the country with INEC rejecting results from the strongholds of PDP candidates for no just cause while accepting the figures those of the APC.
In Lagos, Adamawa, Plateau, Benue, Kwara, Ogun, Oyo, Kano, Jigawa, Bauchi, Nasarawa, Niger, Yobe, Zamfara, Sokoto, Kebbi and Imo states, there are proofs of electoral manipulations ranging from underage voting, ballot stuffing and intimidation of PDP supporters to alteration of some aspects of the process in favour of APC,” Metuh alleged.
The PDP spokesman further alleged: “In Abia State, but for the outcry of the people and timely intervention of the INEC headquarters which rejected the illegal cancellation of results from three local governments and strongholds of the PDP by the State Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC) even after they have been announced by the returning officers, the PDP would have been robbed of its well deserved victory in those areas.
“As a responsible party committed to national unity and democracy, our members have remained peaceful and orderly; our candidates have been conceding defeat in the interest of peace while we elect to channel our protest to the appropriate quarters. The same have not been seen of the APC, which has unleashed its members to cause mayhem and harass our supporters in states where PDP candidates clearly won, such as Akwa-Ibom, Ebonyi, Ekiti, Ondo, Rivers and Gombe states.
“While we urge INEC to take disciplinary actions against its erring officials, we strongly call to question the sincerity of some of the observers especially regarding their failure to raise issues on the irregularities that characterised the voting pattern in most of the states where APC candidates have been declared winner.
“Finally, we invite Nigerians and the international community to note the emerging dangerous trend in our country. There are rising concerns that the APC may have commenced a systematic destruction of democratic institutions and culture, which the PDP successfully nurtured in the last 16 years. Indeed, we wonder if there is a deliberate attempt to also erode the discipline and professionalism of our security forces and entrench the culture of impunity in our society,” the PDP stated.
“The party however, urged the citizens not to despair but to brace and resist all anti-democratic and dictatorial tendencies noting that it is repositioning to stand by the people by providing a credible opposition and returning to power in four years time.”
The PDP, therefore, directed all its elected and appointed officials to be ready to make sacrifices, ensure judicious use of resources and gear up for a rescue mission in the overall interest of the Nigerian people.
Meanwhile, Lagos State chapter of APC has thanked Lagosians “for speaking with their votes once again and consequently renewing confidence and trust in the party and the leaders they have known in the past sixteen years.”
In a statement signed by Joe Igbokwe, the state publicity secretary, the party said: “Words are not enough to express its dept of gratitude and satisfaction for the boldness and courage displayed by Lagos voters in voting for continuity in the centre of excellence.
“In the face of harassment, intimidation and brigandage from the powers-that-be, APC lovers showed infectious and contagious love to the party and its leaders they have known for years now.
“APC lovers in Lagos did not succumb to blatant lies, hate campaigns, politics of the stomach, ethnic and tribal politics and politics of naira, dollars and pounds sterling. They were not swayed because they understood what is at stake. They were smart, courageous and determined to use the power of votes to sustain the intelligent leadership and governance in Lagos…There was no meeting point between light and darkness. We relied heavily on common sense revolution.
“We appreciate Lagosians for understanding the urgent need at this critical point in the nation’s history to connect Lagos effectively to Abuja. Lagosians saw this great opportunity and grabbed it with both hands and the rest is now history.
“We have no doubt in our minds that the synergy between Abuja and Lagos will add great values to the Project Nigeria and consequently make our country to remain credit positive in many years to come.
“Lagos APC appreciates Lagosians for their unflinching support, we celebrate their courage and steadfastness, we honour their patriotic disposition to continuity, we value so much their sense of judgment and the power of their strategic political decision at a time like this.”

Politics / Re: Oba Of Lagos Should Apologise To Igbo People ‘without Delay’ – Falana by dandoki: 5:33pm On Apr 07, 2015
kolonigga:
Human rights lawyer, Femi Falana, has told the Oba of Lagos, Rilwanu Akiolu, to apologise to the Igbo people in Lagos “without delay” over his controversial statement.

During a courtesy visit by Eze Ndigbos (Igbo traditional rulers) of all the local governments in Lagos at the Oba’s Palace on Sunday, Mr. Akiolu had said that Igbo residents in the state should cast their votes for the governorship candidate of the All Progressives Congress, APC, Akinwunmi Ambode, or “perish inside the lagoon.”

In a statement issued on Tuesday, Mr. Falana said the Oba’s diversionary threat is totally unacceptable as it is a mockery of the political objective of national integration.

“It is illegal as it clearly offends Section 42 of the Constitution which has prohibited discrimination on grounds of ethnicity, religion, political opinion, creed or sex,” said Mr. Falana, a Senior Advocate of Nigeria.

“Although the Oba lacks the power to cause anyone to ‘die in the Lagoon within seven days,’ the threat constitutes a violation of the fundamental right of thousands of citizens to life.

“In the case of Director-General of State Security Service v Olisa Agbakoba (1999) 3 N.W.L.R (PT 595) 314 it was held by the Supreme Court that ‘It is not in dispute that the Constitution gives every Nigerian citizen the right to move throughout Nigeria and to reside in any part thereof. It also guarantees to the citizen the right not to be expelled from Nigeria nor be refused entry or exit therefrom.’

“Since the residency right of every citizen is constitutionally guaranteed the Igbo people in Lagos should discountenance the threat of Oba Akiolu.”

The monarch came under severe criticism on Monday, as christian groups and opposition politicians lambasted him for his utterance.
Mr. Falana reminded the Oba that Lagos had continued to provide accommodation for Nigerians from all walks of life, a reason he said accounted for the absence of ‘abandoned properties’ in the state after the civil war.

“From time to time, armed militants and other misguided youths who unleash mindless violence on ‘non indigenes’ have always been called to order by the Government and the people of Lagos State,” Mr. Falana said.

“Indeed, the human-rights community has always kicked against discriminatory policies and ensured that all victims of human rights abuse are defended and protected regardless of their ethnic identity.
“As a senior lawyer, Oba Akiolu ought to have realized that the Electoral Act has not conferred powers on any traditional ruler or any other authority to sanction anyone for voting for a candidate of his or her choice in any election conducted in Nigeria.

“After all, before the just concluded presidential election the Oba adduced reasons why he could not endorse the presidential candidate of the APC, General Mohammadu Buhari (rtd.). He was not harassed or intimidated for exercising his freedom of choice.

“Since the Electoral Act, 2010 as amended has banned any form of hate campaign the Oba is advised to withdraw the threat credited to him and apologize publicly to the Igbo people without any delay.”

http://www.premiumtimesng.com/news/top-news/180706-oba-of-lagos-should-apologise-to-igbo-people-without-delay-falana.html

For the first time in a very long while I see Mr Femi Falana talking utter rubbish. How can the Oba of Lagos decend from his throne to pologise to Igbo people. Everyone that has commented on this matter since it went; viral whether Yoruba or lgbo have been unequivocal about the offensive nature of the Oba's speech. The Oba's palace itself has come out to offer explanation that the interpretation being given is not what the Oba meant. That it is a mix up of lexicon brought about by the fact that the Oba was giving his address in english which could not have been as smooth as if he was speaking in Yoruba. The meaning alluded therefore is not what could have been conveyed if he were speaking in the yoruba language. This explanation should be enough toassuage the fact that the Oba did not mean any offense, and all frayed nerves should by now cooled. But for all sorts of people including Femi Falana to now be giving the Oba ultimatum to aplogise to Igbo people is just out of this world. In yorubaland Obas do not apologise to their subjects. Unless the indication is giving that Igbo people in Lagos are not the subjects of the Oba should we begin to recondider this incident in all its ramifications. Besides, as long as it held that the Oba lacks the power to cause anyone to die in the lagoon within seven days it clearly means that he cannot violate anybody's right. Therefore even if he is not an Oba and could be made to apologise how could he aplogise for something he not only has not done, but clearly cannot do. Misinterpretations have been made, explanations have been offered
. Case closed!!!

All of this could hav been avoided if GEJ was either a wise politician or a good leader. These are simply the can of worms he opened as a result of his innept leadership. He thought all would be well if he just simply corruptly enriches a few people across the country while claiming to do transformation. By the time he realised this would not earn him reelection he unleashed the entire federal economy to get the job done at all cost. All this has resulted in getting us to where we are now. I hope however that he does not hope to getting away with it because this has to do with the violation of electoral laws on amassive scale. Everyday for the thief one day for the owner. The day for Nigeria shall surely come!!!
