Barely 72 hours after a haulage truck rammed into a family car killing husband, wife, and first son and leaving three other children severely injured in Awka, Anambra State, a bus on Wednesday crushed three children of same parents who were returning from school.

The heartbreaking incident which took place at Nnokwa, Idemili south local government area of the state threw the entire town into mourning as people especially mothers and children wailed uncontrollably at the sight of blood and lifeless bodies of the children. The victims, Ukamaka, Ogochukwu and Ezinne with their brother Chimezie who was the only one that survived the accident were said be returning from school, St. Stephen’s Nursery and Primary School, Nnokwa between 1.30 and 2pm on Wednes­ day when they met their end in the unfortunate accident.

Said to be children of Mr. and Mrs. Nweke who hail from Kpagbe, Benue State but resident in Nnokwa. Ukamaka who was a Primary 5 pupil was leading home the other three, Ogochukwu, Primary 2; Chimezie, Primary 1 and Ezinne, Pre-Nursery, and they had crossed the major road, Adazi – Nnewi road and were entering the pathway to their home when the bus belonging to St. John’s Institute of Vocational Studies, Neni coming from Adazi axis skidded off the road and crushed them.

According to an eyewitness, Ukamaka died on the spot; Ogochukwu, male, died on the way to Iyielu Hospital and Ezinne died at a nearby Chinoso Hospital while Chimezie was being treated at Iyielu Hospital, Ogidi before he was discharged on Thursday evening against medical advice. Reacting to the incident, the Vicar of St. Stephen Anglican Church, Nnokwa and Chairman of St. Stephen’s Nursery, Primary and Secondary Schools, Rev. Canon Charles Oraelosi described it as a tragedy and prayed that God would see the grieving parents through.

He said, “I feel so bad, it is a tragic occurrence. The pupils were going home when they came in contact with this sad incident that took away the lives of three of them from the same family. Four of them were going home from school, one is Primary 5, the oldest, she was taking them back home, I don’t know what happened to that bus driver, he suddenly crushed the children . One of them died on the spot, the other three were rushed to the hospital. Two died remaining one who is recuperating in the hospital.

“I have seen their father, he is with the child at the hospital at Iyielu, their mother is still at large and I tell you while I used that word. The reason is that they are still hiding the sad news from her that three of her children died just like that, you know how you feel when your children go to school and didn’t come back, so they are still hiding the sad news from her. Their fa­ ther is handling the matter as a man, I don’t know but it is really a very sad incident.”

Asked if the school does not have arrange­ ment of moving the children across the major road, Canon Oraelosi said, “There is a stop sign at the place called Centre along that road, and they had crossed the road, it was not a problem of crossing the road. They had crossed the road and were entering the path that leads to their house when the reckless driver hit them.” The driver, he said had reported himself to the police and was in police custody as the angry mob would have descended on him. When Saturday Sun visited Iyielu Hospital, Ogidi yesterday, the graduate nurse in charge of Children’s unit said the boy Chimezie whose age she gave as seven, was discharged on Thursday against medical advice.

She said the Priests from St John’s Catholic Church Neni, owners of the bus that had the accident came with the father of the child and asked that he be discharged for them to take him to their own hospital to continue the treatment.

Former President Olusegun Obasanjo yesterday in Benin, the Edo State capital, advocated that education remained the most potent solution to the Boko Haram scourge. He made the recommendation while speaking on the topic: “Effective Educational System : A Panacea for Societal

Development and Transformation”, during the 11th Convocation Lecture of the Benson Idahosa University (BIU) in Benin. He condemned the negative effect of social media on students, pupils and even parents and teachers who he said are fast losing the moral grip of their wards. According to Chief Obasanjo, who carpeted religious leaders who had abandoned preaching tolerance and peace to violence and extremism, said, for the war on Boko Haram to be won irrespective of the military onslaught, there was need for education to be used as a tool
“Education is a moral enterprise, which we need to re-engage. The issue of Boko Haram, President Buhari should also tackle it from the angle of morale education, if we are able to tackle Boko Haram with education in our schools, both in the social media that they use, we will dilute their messages and positively win their hearts and others who have been swayed by the ji­ hadists messages.

“To succeed with counter messages, we need to be more appealing, and truthful and as intense as those of Boko Haram if not more. The capacity of all teachers would be strengthened to deliver such messages; morning and afternoon assemblies of our primary and secondary schools should have a strong dose of such messages, our airwaves and social media should also be saturated with such positive messages. Even if we defeat Boko Haram in the battle front, we need education to sustain the victory. “Let me give you an insight. In 2010 there was a survey of education in Nigeria and among the six geo-political zones. In the Southwest, it was 79 per cent that are educated, in the Southeast, it is about 78 per cent, in the Northeast, where Boko Haram dominates, it is 19 per cent and that is one of the reasons people believe that Boko Haram was a menace waiting to happen and it doesn’t matter what we do,

we have to reverse that trend maybe the situation has even gone worse in the last five years because people have moved out of school some schools have been destroyed.”

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has condemned what it called the invasion of the residence of the former National Security Adviser (NSA) Col. Sambo Dasuki, by security operatives. National Publicity Secretary of the PDP, Olisa Metuh, in a statement, said that he paid a visit to the residence of the former NSA yesterday, but was prevented from gaining entry by men of the Department of State Security, described the action of the security operatives as unconstitutional. Metuh further alerted the nation that the nation is regressing from democracy to full blown dictatorship. Metuh said: “I came into Abuja yesterday because I read the situation about the invasion of the house of the former NSA and his detention and house arrest. So, I drove to his house as a personal friend to see him and to find out what is happening. Then about seven or eight security operatives came out and said that I cannot see him because the house is under security watch. And I asked them, security watch in terms of treason or terrorism? “And they said they are not in a position to say. “The truth is that Nigerians are getting scared. They voted for the President and he was duly elected. And now he’s the father of the nation, he’s the father of everyone. He’s not serving any other interest. But there are certain activities by some of his aides and people around him; it’s like they are taking us back to the military era where we were coming from.
“The last time this happened was under the military. There has never been any situation where people will be held against their will. It is completely against his fundamental human rights. And we should be careful here because this was how it started in Zimbabwe and other countries. Before you know it we have a dictatorship. You cannot scare us.” The PDP national publicity scribe further claimed that stalwarts of the main opposition party and aides of former President, Dr Goodluck Jonathan were targets of persecution by the President Buhari administration. Meanwhile, the party has felicitated with the Muslim community and all Nigerians on this years Eid-el-Fitr celebrations, urging them to use the occasion to mark the beginning of a new era of love, righteousness and brotherliness among them­ selves as commanded by Allah.
In the same vein, Ekiti State governor, Mr. Ayodele Fayose also condemned the invasion and said, “Persecution of Peoples Demo­ cratic Party (PDP) stalwarts and others perceived as opposition to the All Pro­ gressives Congress (APC) Federal government is an ominous sign of imminent return of dictatorship and draconian rule in Nigeria.” The governor, who said he still believes that the invasion of Col. Dasuki homes may not have the backing of President Mo­ hammadu Buhari, said; “If this is being done by some people to please the president, he should check the excesses of those behind it and call them to other because overzealousness by those that are close to the president is inimical to the image of the government.” In a statement issued in Ado-Ekiti yesterday his Special Assistant on Public Communications and New Media, Lere Olayinka, Governor Fayose said he was sad that democracy is already being put on trial, less than two months that President Muhammadu Buhari assumed office, adding that, “Rather than invading homes of Nigerians and putting people under house arrest, the government should invade Boko Haram territories and arrest the in­ surgents.”

Engineer Segun Odegbami, the former Nigeria
international spoke out of the experience garnered
during his football days when he said that it was
too early to say that the Yoruba have lost out
after helping to enthrone the Muhammadu Buhari
administration in Abuja.


“It is too early in the day to say the Yoruba have
lost out. It is not a sprint event, it is a marathon
and when you start a marathon, those who sprint
out the first, usually are the people that get
tired,” the engineer styled as the Mathematical
Odegbami said penultimate Monday.
Odegbami, who scored 23 goals in 46 appearances
for his country was part of a delegation of the
Afenifere Renewal Group, ARG who paid a
courtesy call on Vanguard.


The group led by the ARG secretary general, Mr.
Ayo Afolabi also included the executive director of
The Yoruba Academy, Dr Ade Adeagbo, Professor
Anthony Onipede and the ARG programme officer,
Mr. Segun Balogun all spoke in the same vein.
Members of the delegation gave the impression
that they were not in any way perturbed by
developments in Abuja following the difficulties of
the region’s political ‘leader’, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed
Tinubu in positioning the leadership of the
National Assembly.
But when pressed on whether the Yoruba was
losing out, Odegbami sought to dribble himself out
of the question by taking attention towards the
other activities of the ARG, notably, the promotion
of what he described as the Yoruba Agenda as
encapsulated in the fitly framed Development
Agenda for Western Nigeria, DAWN.



DAWN as the delegation’s leader, Afolabi said,
was simply a catchphrase for regional integration,
a programme aimed at integrating the
development of the Western Region.
Giving vent on the issue, Afolabi said:
“The DAWN Commission is Development Agenda
for Western Nigeria, DAWN. To the ordinary man
on the streets, it is known as Regional
Integration. The idea of regional integration was
brought together by looking back at what our
progenitors, fathers had done right from Awolowo
and it is to see how we can move Western Nigeria
forward. We are looking at it in terms of the
economy, we are looking at in terms of trade,
human development, infrastructure,” Afolabi said.
He was soon brought to task on how that idea
could take hold with the dilution of the APC’s
political hold in the Southwest, given the political
idiosyncrasies of Governor Ayodele Fayose and
lately, Governor Segun Mimiko in Ekiti and Ondo
States. Ekiti and Ondo States are the two states
in the region controlled by the Peoples Democratic
Party, PDP.



“I take you to when the Yoruba Agenda was
launched in 2012 in Lagos. At that time, Olusegun
Mimiko was the governor in Ondo State and Ondo
State was adequately represented at that time. So,
the developmental agenda is not essentially on
political basis. It is based on the reality that the
Yoruba will have to move forward in the terms of
development in general.”
Asked if Governor Fayose was involved in the
integration plans, Afolabi replied thus “Before he
came into office, Ekiti was very much in it.”
Pressed on whether Ekiti after the coming of
Fayose had shown interest in the project he said:
“None of our states opted out.” He went on to
allude to the inclusion of some other states with
Yoruba cultural leaning.
“We have gone further to bring some other states
that have predominant Yoruba populations come
into it. Kwara is very much interested and the
parameters are being worked out. I am aware
that Governor Uduaghan before he left office was
very much in it. Don’t forget that all these states
were part of Western Nigeria and that is why we
christened it Development Agenda for Western
Nigeria. We didn’t limit it to what you now see as
the new Southwest.”
Dr. Adeagbo in his contribution noted the salutary
role of the Yoruba Academy in laying the
intellectual framework for the Yoruba Agenda that
is at the heart of the reintegration plans for the
people of the Southwest.
“The Yoruba Academy was responsible for the
intellectual work that gave birth to the agenda of
that integration. What we are saying is that for
the Yoruba person wherever you live within the
Southwest, that you will be able to have the same
standards, potentials and also, that the
infrastructure available to you must be the same.
What we have done within that context is to
ensure that our thinking is above politics and not
the party you belong to, but to make sure that
every Yoruba state is developed.”
Professor Onipede on his part sought to expatiate
how the Yoruba Agenda for development has
cascaded to the benefit of the rest of Nigeria.
“Even though DAWN is our brain child, but you
will recognise the fact that there are six
geopolitical zones and that our bold efforts is like
a primer, a template which other regions can look
upon. And they have started looking up to it,” the
professor said.
“Even though we are primarily focused on
Western Nigeria, if Western Nigeria is well
developed, it would be like adding to the
commonwealth and other geopolitical zones would
also bring themselves up irrespective of political
affiliation and push for development. It is a way
of bringing politicians to be accountable to the
people.” Mr. Afolabi was to add to Prof. Onipede’s
point when he referred to development initiatives
from some other geopolitical zones which he
claimed were instigated by what was seen in the
Southwest.
“Beyond that, since we started it, there has been
an initiative from the South-South known as the
BRICS Commission and the North has also set up
its own.
“When Chief Awolowo started up with setting up
the WNTV, WNBS which was the first of its kind
in Africa, no sooner did he set it up that the
Eastern Region set up its own broadcasting house
and the Northern Region also copied it. It is a
way gingering every part of Nigeria to be able to
move forward and aspire for development,”
Afolabi said.
Eventually the discussion returned to the position
of the Yoruba in contemporary Nigeria, and again,
Odegbami was asked whether Asiwaju Tinubu who
led the Yoruba in the formation of the present
government had lost out.
“Asiwaju is a Yoruba man and he is the leader of
the APC, at least in the Southwest. That does not
equate to the agenda of the Yoruba, it is a very
thin line, but you must create that distinction.
For example, some of us are not members of the
APC even though we are fully sympathetic to the
cause of the APC because we have among us those
who belong to other political movements. “As I
told you it is still too early, this is a game. I
have found out that politics is a game where
there are no scruples, where anything goes, it
doesn’t follow rational thinking and calculations
and some people master it more than the others.
But one thing is clear, the Yoruba never set out
to rule Nigeria or to control the Federal
Government. We have always done well when we
are making our contributions to our region first
and that impacts on the rest of the nation.”

The task of re-positioning Nigeria onto path of
greater development and stability requires
sacrifice, patriotism and’self-denial’, President
Muhammadu Buhari said on Friday in his Eid-il-
Fitr message to Nigerians.



“Our dire circumstances and the many missed
opportunities of the past, some commentators and
observers have said that this is Nigeria’s last
chance to get its act together and finally begin to
fulfill its God-given potential for greatness.
“While not going that far, I certainly believe that
now, more than ever before, our country needs
greater self-denial, sacrifice and patriotism from
all of its citizens, if we are to quickly recover
from our numerous problems and start moving in
a positive direction,” he said in the message in
which he urged Nigerians to imbibe the lessons of
Ramadan.

While acknowledging the burden of expectations
that weighed heavily on him, the President urged
Nigerians to be patient, noting that his
commitment to tackling various challenges facing
the nation has not wavered.
He said, “I remain wholly committed to giving the
required leadership towards undoing the wrongs of
the past, ensuring that Nigeria truly begins to
unlock its great potential and that the benefits of
our immense national resources are shared and
enjoyed by all, not just by successive cabals of
corrupt leaders and their cronies.
“I was very aware of your high expectations when
I assumed office and I reassure you, my fellow
citizens, that since my inauguration on the 29th
of May this year, I have been working with
utmost dedication to meticulously plan and tackle
the many national challenges which we identified
and promised to resolve.


“To succeed however, I need your continued
support, understanding and patience.
“I fully understand and share the thirst of my
long-suffering compatriots for corruption-free
government institutions that work efficiently to
deliver visible development for the benefit of all
citizens.
“I also share the feelings of those who think that
we should be moving faster. But I urge them and
all Nigerians to trust that my commitment to real
and positive change in our nation is as firm as
ever.
“There is indeed much work to be done, but we
must do it well and carefully to ensure that the
great opportunity which we now have is not lost
to the “business as usual” group who selfishly or
shortsightedly prefer a status quo that panders to
their personal or group interests.


“The adverse effects of years of rot, corruption,
inept and bad governance on our nation are
immense, but certainly not insurmountable if we
all resolve now to place the well-being of our
nation above all other considerations and work
whole-heartedly with the present administration to
achieve greater peace and security across the
nation, and reposition our country for faster
economic development and progress.”
