. . . the first thing is to remember that there is corruption everywhere even in the  communist countries, in the advanced societies, the democratic societies like the united states. We begin from there and then we ask ourselves, do these countries still manage to be productive despite corruption. In other words, is corruption secondary to projects, to development and then compare that to Nigeria where I must say that very often, corruption seems to be the main business. Confronted with that disparity, you need a very strong anti-corruption force just as we had under the leadership of one young man Ribadu, some years ago, who's contesting the elections and whom im backing by the way.

I think he can represent the youthful wind of change im talking about. So you give it its full powers as happened under ribadu, powers to arrest, to prosecute, to investigate and make it not responsible to the president of a nation. In other words its totally independent commission virtually with its police force, its own investigative force and its thoroughly teethed with forces of discipline. That will be the beginning.

There was a saying when Ribadu was in power that the fear of the EFCC - the organization he headed - was the beginning of wisdom and believe me, it was. He toppled the all powerful inspector general of police,  put a number of governors to flight, had them prosecuted not only in Nigeria but in other countries like london, enabled Nigeria to recover billions of Naira and this man was endangered… assassination attempts. he was that effective. Now if you exhume that kind of autonomous and powerful and dedicated organization, believe me you will cut corruption in Nigeria by half within a couple of years.

Anyways, back to the topic, I think its rather stupid for people to abuse nollywood films as substandard and then carry their big heads to watch it. Why watch it if you're so sure its rubbish. To make matters worse, you now start screaming when you are denied access to watch these so called rubbish films.

Its also interesting to note that most people screaming now are people in diaspora. You dont want to pay for the films, you would rather watch them for free. As if that were not enough, you open your big mouths to rubbish the industry. To crown it all up, you now start screaming at the slightest stoppage of your theft of these poor peoples copyrighted work.

Why don't you come back to Nigeria and see how easy it is to live in and make money. So much stuff to contend with. Poor power, no security, delapitated ammenities, bad/inexistent legislation, lack of marketing networks and to make matters worse thieves like you guys in diaspora.

My Best Yoruba Film ever is Ti Oluwa Ni Ile. Part 1-3. This film got me anticipating the next part till it came out. Since then, no yoruba film has ever got me wating for the next part as much as this has. As a matter of fact most Yoruba films today that have part 1,2,3 etc are usually just a continuation of the previous like you were changing discs!
Nevertheless I also love other classics from Tunde Kelani and Mainframe. I just cannot wait to see Arugba.

I am beginning to think there is a conflict of interest in this conference especially from anyone in Nairaland who has the permission to ban users!

Lagbaja's site - I believe - needs a serious revamp as a matter of fact. I don't think the site does enough justice to the kind of creativity and dynamism this man exhumes. That's not to say that the site is not nice. Its tidy enough especially with the music scores concept in the background but I believe lagbaja deserves something better.

His music gives you so much 'WOW' and leaves you wanting more but not this site. Anyways just my thoughts,

Apparently, it seems the idea of a conference of this sort holding is not only a good idea but that it's long overdue as nearly every poster has shown interest. Only thing is that the way forward needs to be ironed out.

I would like to propose a line of action to get this thing started as soon as possible.



1. We need to create an event on facebook and add admins. Anyone who's interested in volunteering would indicate on the wall and would be added as an admin. Meanwhile anyone can take up the initiative to create this page and post the link here.

2. Buy a domain name and web hosting (anybody wants to sponsor this)

3. We need to set the agenda, detailing - proposed key speakers (all subject to decision on the facebook page), breakout sessions and topics, panelists and topics, proposed guest industry experts (e.g microsoft, interswitch, chams , just my thoughts, ); Proposed venue, proposed date , etc,

4. We need to get the website up and running (someone can volunteer designing)

5. Get the word out!

Do not trivialize what this poster has just done. He might not know it, but the idea he has just put forward can give birth to a successful web industry in Nigeria.

As far as i'm concerned, there is no organised web industry in Nigeria. Everyone just does stuff their own way and do what they think is right.

Coming together physically for a conference like this would do wonders.  You guys should see what the Association of Advertising Agencies in Nigeria is doing. They have a lot of best practices that help them in their profession, like they all deciding to charge pitch fees for clients; deciding whether members should do free samples for clients etc.

A conference like this would not only bring us together to agree on issues, it would also let us rub minds and form healthy collaborations and partnerships. If you were at barcamp Nigeria, you would have an idea of what i'm talking about. I am still benefiting from the networks and partnerships i made.

I also think the conference should accomodate a wide range of topics like development, front end design, web 2.0 and social networking, marketing, search engine optimization, ecommerce( i dont see how interswitch would not support this conference),online advertising etc.

Hey what are you people talking about.
For about two months now, my mtn has been really crappy. I connect using nokia e71 and mtn 10k 3gb.

But i just noticed that every now and again, the connection would break and i reconnect again, then thesame thing happens.

Is this just me? or has anyone else noticed this or has mtn just recently sorted out their 3g thingy

Glo would definitely be better off, contracting the site out to an agency rather than try to recruit a 'know all' webdesigner. I mean the site is so terrible (http://www.gloworld.com and it passes the wrong message to the world. The only indigenous mobile telecommunications company in Nigeria has the worst website of all.

What I know about glo's branding is that they've changed agencies like three times now, then made the unwise decision to do their branding inhouse.

When glo first started, their branding was done by a south african company, who gave them a beautiful glo logo and nice lemon green colours. Anyone remembers those gloworld signboards and their initial sim pack.

They then transferred to a Nigerian company - which I have no problems with - but those guys, in my opinion, did not follow the original brand and messed things up.
What you see now in glo is a very inconsistent brand with ugly shades of green and an adulterated logo. The in house brand team has succeeded in even adulterating it more.

I believe they are trying to transfer the website to their in house branding team as well and I just wish them luck.

I think it would be interesting to note that glo is looking to recruit web designersssssss. I don't see how one person could develop and mangage such a large site.

What is more interesting is that I have not seen anything like php, asp, jsp, perl, python on the requirements and experience list, which makes me think they are only looking for front end guys.

But the thing that really knocks me off is that I see web 2.0 in the requirements. I don't quite understand how that can be a requirement. Also 'Net' doesn't mean anything to me. Can someone please enlighten me?

Finally in my opinion, I believe the requirements are just a formal list, either got from a recruitment agency's check list or googled. I don't see how the interviewer would be able to judge whether a candidate is proficient in all these areas or not.

From my experience, this checklist is just used to sieve cv's and get a shortlist. What they do is to find occurences of those keywords, using a software, in all the cv's they've received. What happens next after that is very far from that checklist.

Was just random surfing when I noticed that ecobank has just launched a new website coupled with a new logo.

I'm wondering what company put this together. It might be an offshore agency though as I know ecobank has its presence in 27 African countries and is not necessarily headquartered in Nigeria.

This is easily the best bank website in Nigeria. I just hope it was produced by a Nigerian agency.

The biggest single problem liable for our underdevelopment is the use of English. Have you ever seen a mechanic learn his trade or relate in English. No. They do their trade in their local languages and so do millions of Nigerians. But because we have allowed technology overtake these languages what they learn is inefficient.

As long as graduate Automobile engineers in English and train Mechanics in Local languages, we can never make cars in Nigeria.

Why is it that all countries that develop technology in their languages are highly developed e.g china, japan, korea, india etc, and those that use other peoples languages are underdeveloped e.g: Nigeria and other african countries?

This is because your language depicts your realities.

From the replies i have read on this thread, its obvious that only a handfull are webmasters. This situation is a unique case. Its not the usual thing where the scammer sets up a fake website which is a clone of the original site and tries to get confidential information through that fake website.

This case is the case of a bank's real website, being hijacked and used to scam people. The consequences of this are absolutely grave, ETB really need to get on top of this. As far as i'm concerned, these scammers have the power to do anything with the ETB website if they wish. The can even shut it down totally if the want.

The only mysterious thing is that how did they manage to gain access onto the webspace?? A question only the webmasters can answer.
