CultureRe: Proper Greeting For Black American Meeting Boyfriend's Nigerian Mother by daprince: 9:59am On Mar 14, 2007
First of all, Hausa people (men in particular) don't bow, they kinda squat and make a gesture with their right hand as if they are making a fist. Just to clarify that.

@topic,

just be urself girl, but try do some of the things Wes suggested, especially calling the old lady "Mama," they like that. But to kneelhuh?? ummm, I think u should just genuflect rather than kneeling, they serve the same purpose. Just like others adviced, be around her and show some interest in their culture. Ask her about ur man's early years. But mostly importantly, LEARN HOW TO COOK THEIR TRADITIONAL DISHES IF U CAN!

TravelRe: Ever Been An Embarrassed Nigerian? by daprince(op): 3:27am On Mar 05, 2007
Defending ur nationality/country on a one on one basis is pretty easier than doing so when u are a single voice in a large group where everybody has already made presumptions and forgone conclusions about a certain class of people. I tell u this, when the abc network documentary was aired, I had fun watching it on the internet and also, talking about it and how greedy most Americans were. I remember turning on my laptop in the laboratory at school and showing some Nigerians and even foreigners the documentary. I let 'em know that yeah, it's being done cuz Americans are greedy, but only a minute fraction of the population does it. But I tell u, when the moderator at my training/meeting was talking and giving instances, DANG!!!!! I was so embarrassed that people in my country have caused some punks to stereotype the entire country as being corrupt. You may argue that u are always going to defend ur country, but when u face certain situations, u will look for words but find none. It is so easy for most of us to sit our butts down and type shit about defending our country, but we all know the truth that there are instances that u just can't help it.
TravelRe: Ever Been An Embarrassed Nigerian? by daprince(op): 8:13am On Mar 04, 2007
Hey dude, I understand what u are saying, but that situation was just so awkward. If u ever get into such a situation, then u are going to know how I must have felt. BTW, I'm not mad at ur tone cuz I expected such reactions from some people.
TravelEver Been An Embarrassed Nigerian? by daprince(op): 7:34am On Mar 04, 2007
I was at this meeting/training at my job where we were discussing fraud and Forgery in financial institutions and how to detect and stop them. The discussion led to internet spam mails, and the moderator brought up an instance when her husband got a mail from somebody in Naija telling him that he had won a lottery jackpot. She also went ahead to talk about how Nigerians send spam mails about long lost relatives who died leaving some huge deposits in Nigeria. The talk also went on about how Nigerians are not allowed to sell stuff on ebay, and on and on and on. It kind of sounded funny, but at the same time really embarrassing. Fortunately for me, none of the people there knew I was Nigerian, so I just kept my mouth shut. I must admit, that was the first time in my life that I was ashamed of being identified as a Nigerian because it was just too embarrassing. Those of u who happened to watch the abc documentary on 419 in Nigeria might have a slight feeling of what I faced during the discussion.
I just want to know if any of u has ever felt embarrassed being identified as a Nigerian before? If u have, how did u feel and what was the situation like?

I think the dude is good (even though I'm no fan of hip hop). I got to know that he was Nigerian when I was talking to Tony Tetuila and saw the photos Tony took with his pop. It felt good knowing that some Nigerian kid is doing fine.
Hey Jay, how did u get your stats that 80% of men are impotent? (just wondering here plz).
PoliticsRe: Feminism: What Is Your View About It? by daprince: 7:19am On Mar 03, 2007
I'm surprised that u are still arguing with Wes. She's young and still got a lot to learn before she meets Obama from Venus or Pluto (oh, Pluto is now gone, so are those liberal guys Wes).

Macdoe, na which planet u dey sef? By the way, imagine u are a top exec. and u invite some very important guests to dinner, your "fine" wife serves the meal and then walks to the kitchen. Perhaps she happens to need your attention in the kitchen, and she just blurts out the words, "papa Samuel Doe!" What are u going to do? That's just plain embarrassing. The day my wife calls me "papa Prince" that's the day she's leaving my house! Forget western culture/civilization, it's absurd for a wife in the 21st century to call her husband "papa crap." So u guys are going to be in bed doing the damn sane thing and she's going to yell, "papa Samuel Doe" put it in here, not there? Does that sound romantic to u? C'mon dawg, act like the literate being I'm tempted to think u are and stop trying to bring back some outdated African practice that most people are ashamed of.

Read some interesting stuff here. If I may ask, why do people have more than one cell phone at a time? Not trying to bash anybody here plz. BTW, nice phones lots of people got on here. Sagem and nokia seem to be on top in naija.

Christianity EtcRe: Do Islam And Christianity Permit The Use Of Condoms? by daprince: 12:10am On Feb 20, 2007
@ ngola,
This ain't a personal attack at u or any other Catholic at that: why do I have to count calendar days in order to "cool my heels" with the woman I love and call my wife? C'mon y'all, safe sex as being taught by the Catholic church doesn't really make much sense to me (I dunno about others). THERE'S NOTHING WRONG WITH ONE PLANNING THEIR FAMILY! I know that sex before/outta marriage is wrong (but hey fellas, we still do the damn thing), but a couple choosing to have a particular number of kids isn't a bad idea at all. The brainwashing that goes on in most religions drives me nuts. God wants us to love and adore Him, but most religions are teaching stuff that are inconsistent with what is attainable.
The use of condom by married couples is fine with me since it's a way of caring for the kids they've got. The same bible that most people are quick to refer to as being against the use of raincoat states, "any man who cannot provide for his household is worse than an infidel." (I think that's in 1st or 2nd Timothy). Why would I wanna have kids I couldn't care for? Sex in marriage isn't just for manufacturing kids, but it's part of "enjoyment." (Paul made mention of something like that in Corinthians). I'm gonna have lots of fun with my wife, but we aint gonna have lots of kids. How are we gonna do that? She's gonna go on some birthcontrol!

Paddy, I agree with u. Babyface, if u got the money to visit yankee (but don't be carried away with the big city names u've heard in naija like Brooklyn, LA, etc), come pay a visit. I don't know how old u are, but I tell u going to have some really good fun if u are the kind that likes fun. I believe there are some fun spots in London too, but u just gotta hang with the right people to take u to the right places. I hope u still catch some fun.

By the way dude (@ topic), why did u spend 250 bucks browsing there if u could get it at a cheaper rate elsewhere? Abi u just wan get a feel of wetin the mall be? LOL.
TravelRe: London Is Not The Paradise I Expected by daprince: 7:46am On Jan 29, 2007
Hot stepper, I believe the essence of buying a house in the US (and I believe the UK or wherever) is to build equity while having a place to call ur own. There are people who just build houses in naija or Africa just to prove to people that they've "arrived." What value does building a house one ain't gonna live in (or perhaps even rent out) add to ones life? If ur parents are old and wanna go settle in naija (u said it), thats understandable. But what are u gonna say of a struggling punk who can't even pay his rent where he lives, going to build a mansion in Africa? C'mon girl, u know that's just darn ludicrous. People travel abroad to make better lives and good investments for 'emselves and not foolish ones. If u choose to rent and help a landlord pay his mortgage while building equity on his property, go ahead and be my guest girl.
One might think oh, the value of the $ to the naira is so big (just as someone pointed out) and that investing 20 million naira building a house in naija as a rental property could be rewarding, but they gotta consider the value of the naira to the $ while converting from naira to $ when they gonna pay the loan(s) they took. If u invest money, u need returns (that's biz). Assuming one builds a block of 6 flats for 15-20 million naira in naija, what is gonna be the rent on it in a year? The next question one needs to ask 'emselves is, are they gonna build the house with their liquid cash or they gonna take (a) loan(s)? If the later is the case, then they are in a big mess cuz the rental fees can't offset the yearly payment on the loan(s). If one gets a loan for $200k, no bank or financial institution is gonna accept anything less than $1200/month from them no matter how good their credit standing is. So girl, u can choose to rent from me and help me pay my mortgage, or u can go get ur own place and pay mortgage on it to build equity for urself.
By the way, in my earlier post, I didn't mean to insult u or anybody else living in a rented place. I was just trying to point out how dumb people can be some times. Plz, don't think I was trying to act kinda stuck up. Peace girl.

Read Ababio in high back in naija, good book (among the top in naija) but I've come across better Chemistry textbooks here in the US. But props still need to be given to the dude. Queen, if u live outside of naija, can't u get better Chemistry textbooks? Are u in college or high school? If u are in college, I can recommend great Chemistry textbooks for u if u don't mind.

O boy na wa oooooo. I was just about to start studying, but I decided to see whatz up on NL, and I came across ur thread. Dang boy! Ur story na real rib-cracker. But seriously though, at least u've learned now that many people who live in so-called "abroad" can't even afford to live comfy. I've seen somebody who's a darn cab driver in Chicago, but got a jeep with a chauffeur in naija. Funny isn't it? Dude, u've seen things for urself, "and may the peace of the Lord be with u" LOL.
I often wonder how people who ain't comfy living abroad can afford to go spend their money building mansions in naija.
I've seen people here who couldn't buy houses in the US, but wanna go build huge houses in Africa. Pathetic! Dude, just like those in London have advised u to do, go find some bars (if u are legal to drink) or some clubs (I learned u guys call it rave in London) to jiggy it down. Or u can go to trafalgar square in Westminster to catch pigeons like Osuofia. At least that might put u in the news.

I acknowledged the receipt of your details with the western union money transfer details as well. I just left the western union money office here and I was told that the control number (10 digits) is not correct.
Kindly get in touch from the western union money office you sent the money from so that they can correct the mistake in the control number.

Here's my reply

Hey sorry, I went golfing this weekend. By the way, I called them at western union and they told me the money is not going to clear until probably tuesday morning because I sent a lot of money to Nigeria and Senegal the same day I sent that money to u (there's some biz venture I'm helping my dad prosecute in Africa). So, I guess u will have to be patient.
By the way, I want u to mail whatever papers u've got to me not later than 9am your time tomorrow via FEDEX so I can get them by tuesday morning. Don't worry about your Chief Justice signing them yet, just send them in LATEST BY 9am TOMORROW. I don't want to waste any time in getting this stuff done. Make sure u send them tomorrow to the address I sent u earlier. I will be checking my mail by tuesday morning. Take care.
Miya.

That was how my email conversation ended, the following is the YIM conversation (mind u, I was on break from school and I had nothing to do, so I really wanted to have some fun with this scavenger). Enjoy:

My email to his "attorney"

Hi, I'm Mr Charles writing on behalf of Maria Haydon, the daughter of Joseph Jolly Haydon who was a contractor with Shell company in Rivers state Nigeria. He died in a plane crash in 2005 and had a huge deposit (about $13.1m) that Maria would like to entrust in my care in order to secure the money for her. She's stranded back in Nigeria and doesn't know what she's gonna do. Anyway, I would like to know what is required of me in order to get this money for Maria. Just to let u know sir, I've no personal interest in this money, I just want to help her out since she trusts me. Have a nice day sir.
Mr Charles.
