Gunmen have reportedly abducted Patrick Aghamba, the Anambra state commissioner for youth development, and his wife while on their way to Abuja, the federal capital territory (FCT).
The incident was said to have happened when the commissioner and his wife were travelling to attend the wedding of the Anambra governor’s daughter.

Reports say Kpajie Offia, an aide to the commissioner who was travelling with them, was killed during the attack.
When contacted, Ikenga Anthony, police spokesperson in Anambra, said he “does not have any information on the incident”.
When contacted, Josephine Adeh, the FCT police spokesperson, said the command was not aware of the incident.
Christian Aburime, chief press secretary to Chukwuma Soludo, the governor of Anambra, said he would confirm the incident and get back.
“We read things like that in the newspaper, but I will get back to you on it as soon as possible,” Aburime said.
Zhongshan Fucheng Industrial Investment Co. Limited, a Chinese firm has released one of the seized Nigeria’s presidential jets.
Recall that Zhongshan, the Chinese firm had secured a court order to confiscate three Nigerian presidential jets pending when Zhongshan receives $74.5 million awarded to it against Nigeria.
The spokesperson of the company who made this known to newsmen on Friday said, the company released the aircraft because President Bola Ahmed Tinubu would need it to travel to a scheduled meeting with President Macron of France early next week.
His words according to News360 Nigeria : “Zhongshan has consistently sought to act reasonably and fairly in the course of a legal dispute with Nigeria which was not of its making,” the official told this newspaper Friday afternoon. “It (Zhongshan) has now been made aware that an Airbus A330, currently detained in France as a result of a French court order obtained by Zhongshan, is needed for the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria to travel to a scheduled meeting with President Macron of France early next week.
“As a gesture of goodwill, Zhongshan has lifted the seizure of that aircraft immediately. This will allow it to be used for the President’s trip.
“Zhongshan remains committed to talks with representatives of the Federal Government of Nigeria, this time serious and substantive on both sides, with a view to reaching a reasonable compromise settlement rapidly.”
News360 Nigeria had reported how the Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga had said that the federal government in collaboration with the Ogun State government are doing everything to quash the frivolous order obtained by Zhongshan in Paris to seize Nigeria’s presidential jets.
His words:
“The Presidency is aware of the various failed attempts by a Chinese company, Zhongshan Fucheng Industrial Investment Co. Limited, to take over offshore assets of the Federal Government of Nigeria through subterfuge.
“The Federal Government is not under any contractual obligation with the company. The case in which Zhongshan is trying to use every unorthodox means to strip our offshore assets is between the company and the Ogun State Government.
“The federal government is fully aware of efforts being made by the Ogun state government to reach an amicable resolution to the matter.
“It must be said without any equivocation that Zhongshan has no solid ground to demand restitution from the Ogun State Government based on the facts regarding the 2007 contract between the company and the State Government to manage a free-trade zone.
“When the contract with Ogun State was revoked in 2015, the company had only erected a perimeter fence on the land earmarked for a free trade zone.
“While the Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice are working with the Ogun State Government on an amicable resolution, Zhongshan obtained two orders from the Judicial Court of Paris dated March 7, 2024, and August 12, 2024, without any notice being duly served on the Federal Government of Nigeria and Ogun State Government.
“This arm-twisting tactic by the Chinese company is the latest in a long list of failed moves to attach Nigerian government-owned assets to foreign jurisdictions.
“Material facts in the transaction between the Ogun State Government and Zhongshan point to another P&ID case in which unscrupulous and questionable individuals falsely present themselves as investors with the sole objective of cheating and scamming Governments in Africa.
“Undoubtedly, Zhongshan withheld vital information and misled the Judicial Court in Paris into attaching the Nigerian government’s presidential jets, which are on routine maintenance in France. The use and nature of the Presidential jets as assets of a Sovereign entity whose assets are protected by diplomatic immunity forbid any foreign Court from issuing an order against them.
“We are convinced the Chinese company misled the Judicial Court of Paris regarding the use and nature of the assets it seeks to attach and did not fully disclose to the court as required by law.
“This same Chinese company had tried to enforce its questionable judgment in the UK and USA but failed.
“Like the P&ID case, foreign companies are trying to defraud Nigeria with the collaboration of some bureaucrats. Zhongshan appeared to have sold the judgment they got to a venture capitalist seeking to make money by embarrassing the Federal Government and President Bola Tinubu.
“We want to assure Nigerians that the Federal Government is working with the Ogun State Government to discharge this frivolous order in Paris immediately.
“Nigerian Government will always work to protect our national assets from predators and shylocks who masquerade as investors”.
Gunmen have kidnapped over 20 medical and dental students and a House Officer in Benue State.
The students were en route to the Federation of Catholic Medical and Dental Students (FECAMDS) annual convention in Enugu.
The students, said to be from the University of Maiduguri and University of Jos, were traveling together when they were ambushed by gunmen around 5:30 p.m. in the Otukpo area of the state, News360 Nigeria gathered

Suspected cybercriminals have compromised the domain address of Nigeria’s banking giant GTBank, rendering the website inaccessible since Wednesday night, according to multiple reports
The breach comes just a day after the domain name was renewed for another five years, from August 13, 2024, to March 21, 2029, according to various online domain analysis platforms seen by News360 Nigeria gathered
As of now, no group of hackers has claimed responsibility for the attack, which appears to have begun on August 14.
GTBank has yet to release an official statement, and a spokesperson for the bank did not immediately respond to requests for comments.
The attackers seem to have created an additional HTTP layer of the website, likely in an attempt to steal customers’ data through phishing.
A cybersecurity expert familiar with the Nigerian banking sector suggested that the bank’s login credentials might have been compromised, rather than the domain being stolen outright for resale.
Frustration is already mounting among GTBank customers, who have taken to social media platform X (formerly Twitter) to express their inability to access the website for transactions. GTBank representatives on X have urged customers to be patient and directed them to alternative channels for assistance.
Fortunately, the bank’s mobile applications on Android and iOS have not been affected by the breach and remain operational.
GTBank, one of Nigeria’s largest financial institutions, serves millions of customers both within the country and across other African nations.
The incident highlights the growing risks of cyberattacks on financial institutions and the need for robust cybersecurity measures.
The House of Representatives Committee on Basic Examination Bodies grilled the West African Examination Council (WAEC) Nigeria’s Head, Josiah Dangut, over a N6 billion deficit in 2023 and a N5 billion loan for customized calculators.
Dangut who appeared before the Committee on Tuesday in Abuja was accompanied by the Registrar; Angus Okeleze, Senior Deputy Registrar; Victor Odu, Acting Director of Finance; Segun Jerumeh, Deputy Director of Finance, WAEC.
Dangut pleaded for more time to present the required documents and explained the 50% payment for the Taraba state office construction to avoid inflationary losses.
The committee chairman assured that their inquiry was not a witch-hunt but a constitutional obligation to ensure transparency and accountability.
The committee questioned how WAEC generated N34 billion in 2023 but spent N40 billion and approved a N5 billion loan without proper authorization.
They demanded explanations for the deficit, expenditures, and correspondence related to the calculator purchase. Additionally, they requested evidence of due process, payment records, and submission of accounts to the Auditor General.
Dangut however provided the cashbook of the Agency to the Committee, but the committee, dissatisfied with WAEC’s responses, ordered the submission of bank statements from 2018 to date within a week. WAEC was accused of being uncooperative and shielding information.
A member of the Committee, Awaji-Inombek Abiante, described WAEC as uncooperative, saying they must be held accountable.
“WAEC Nigeria was an uncooperative witness in this process, shielding and denying Nigerians of having value for whatever investment the country has had in that office should submit to this committee in furtherance of this investigation all the bank account statements of his office,” he said.
The Committee was piqued that out of eight submissions demanded from the examination in a bid to probe their expenditure, it only submitted one, which was the nominal roll.
The Committee Chairman said they had to explain how WAEC generated N34 billion in 2023 but spent N40 billion.
He also wondered how the examination body could approve a loan of up to N5 billion when even a Ministerial Board could not approve such an amount.
He queried the WAEC Head about how many students participated in the 2022 elections that they got the calculators.
The Committee demanded that WAEC must provide the expenditures that have led to the N6 billion deficits and all correspondence related to the purchase of customised calculators.
It said evidence of approval for the 5 billion naira loan to purchase the customized calculators must be provided
The Committee also demanded evidence of due process followed for the award of the contract as well as evidence of payment, including payment vouchers and bank records.
The Committee also demanded for evidence of submission of accounts to the Auditor General for the Federation from 2018 to 2023
It also demanded the profile of the external auditor for the agency and the engagement letters for the past three years.
The Committee also queried WAEC for breaching the financial, public procurement and financial regulations Acts over the payment of 50 per cent of the contract for the construction of its Taraba state office worth N532 million.
Dangut who pleaded with the lawmakers to give him another date to enable him to present the statement of account and other documents demanded
He also explained that he had to pay 50 per cent of the Taraba office contract sum to avoid the astronomical rise in the inflationary trend in the country.
Oboku said the Committee on Basic Education Examination Bodies is not a witch-hunting committee but is focused on fulfilling its constitutional obligations as outlined in the constitution.
“Both the legislative house and WAEC are bound by the Constitution. As such, the committee expects full cooperation from WAEC, including the timely provision of all necessary documents to expedite our inquiry and report,” he said.
A man identified only as Musa has been detained in the Amuloko area after being found with a fresh human skull in Ibadan, Oyo State capital.
Residents grew suspicious of his odd behavior and confronted him, demanding to inspect the sack he was carrying. Upon opening the sack, they discovered the human skull inside.

The Kano State Police Command has transferred 76 suspects, including a foreign national, to Force Headquarters in Abuja for a discreet investigation on charges of sedition.
These individuals were arrested for flying Russian flags during recent protests, News360 Nigeria reports.
State Police Commissioner Salman Garba provided an update on Monday, revealing that the suspects were apprehended amid ongoing nationwide hunger protests. The arrests were part of efforts to maintain law and order during the demonstrations.
“This press conference today aims to provide a comprehensive update on the recent violent incidents that resulted in the wanton destruction and looting of government and public properties in Kano State. These incidents were instigated by hoodlums under the guise of a nationwide protest, as well as the achievements recorded by the Command in crime prevention, management, and control from August 1 to date,” he said.
According to him, the command has so far arrested no fewer than 873 suspects and recovered a large quantity of exhibits.
Garba stated that a total of 600 suspects have been prosecuted for various offences, including criminal conspiracy, inciting disturbance, riot, theft, mischief, and arson.
Additionally, 150 suspects have been arrested and prosecuted for violating the curfew enforced by the Kano State Government. An additional six suspects linked with masterminding the destruction, arson, and looting of the Kano Printing Press (KPP) are undergoing investigation.
Similarly, 41 suspects were also apprehended within the period under review for other major crimes, including armed robbery, kidnapping, and car theft, among others.
The police chief said items recovered from the suspects included two AK-47 rifles and other substantial properties looted by the hoodlums from the Audu Bako Secretariat, NCC Office, High Court Complexes, Kano Printing Press, and supermarkets.
“Despite the challenges posed by the recent protest, it is important to highlight some of the achievements recorded by the Police Command in crime prevention, management, and control within the period under review.
“The Command has remained resolute and steadfast in its duty to protect the lives and properties of all residents in Kano State. Through proactive policing strategies and community engagement, we have successfully achieved significant successes within the period under review, including the arrest of two suspected kidnappers, five suspected armed robbers, and eight suspected car thieves.
“Others include two human trafficking suspects, 23 suspected ‘Yan Daba’ (local gangs), one notorious drug dealer, and 13 trafficking victims,” he said.
Philip Shaibu, the reinstated Deputy Governor of Edo State, has officially returned to his office and instructed his staff to resume their duties as well.
In a video broadcast on X.com on Monday, Shaibu wrote, “In adherence to the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, as amended, I announce my official resumption to the office. God Bless Edo State, God Bless Nigeria.”

In a tragic incident, seven members of the same family in Runjin Barmo village, Kajiji District of Shagari Local Government Area in Sokoto State, have reportedly died after consuming a contaminated cassava meal, News360 Nigeria gathered
The unfortunate event was confirmed in a statement issued by Nura Bello, the information officer for the state Ministry of Health, on behalf of the State Commissioner for Health, Hajiya Asabe Balarabe, on Sunday evening.
According to the statement, the village head, Malam Muhammadu Modi, recounted the incident to the Commissioner during her visit to the community. He explained that the victims, comprising the father, Malam Abubakar, his wife, A’ishatu Abubakar, and their five children, fell ill after eating the cassava delicacy for dinner.
“The incident occurred last Wednesday, but the exact cause of death has yet to be confirmed,” said the village head. He further noted that other households in the village also consumed the same batch of cassava without any reported cases of illness, raising concerns about what could have gone wrong.
The Commissioner expressed deep condolences on behalf of the state governor, Dr. Ahmed Aliyu, and assured the community that the government is taking the incident seriously. She announced that the Ministry of Health would take samples from a surviving teenager who also consumed the cassava meal in an effort to determine the cause of the deaths.
Hajiya Asabe Balarabe urged residents of Sokoto State to promptly report any unusual health issues to the authorities for timely intervention. She assured the community that the state government would take all necessary actions following the investigation.
In his remarks, Sani Bello Tambuwal, the Director of Health for Shagari Local Government Area, expressed gratitude to the Commissioner for her swift response and concern. He also hoped that the state government would sustain these efforts to prevent future occurrences.
The Commissioner was accompanied on her visit by the Executive Director of the State Hospital Services Management Board, Dr. Bello Abubakar Attahiru, along with other directors and staff from the ministry.
A dramatic scene unfolded at Lagos Airport on Saturday when a Nigerian woman tore up her husband's international passport shortly after they returned from abroad.
The incident, which has been criticized as the destruction of government property, has sparked public outrage and calls for legal action.
A video circulating online shows the woman, visibly angry, dismissing questions about her actions with, “Is it your passport?” She then left her husband behind, taking their children and telling him, “If you want to sleep there, sleep there. This is Nigeria; this is where you will be.”

The National Youth Service Corps has denied a social media report that corps members’ bank accounts are being upgraded to accommodate the N70,000 new national minimum wage.
The corps said no directive has been given by the relevant authority for it to start the payment of N70, 000 minimum wage to corps members or to upgrade their accountsaccounts, News360 Nigeria gathered
According to a statement issued by the NYSC Director of Information and Public Relations, Eddy Megwa, on Saturday, the report is misleading and absolutely false.
The NYSC, therefore, advised corps members to desist from allowing mischief makers who are set to mislead Nigerians to continue to play on their intelligence.
The statement read, “The attention of National Youth Service Corps management has been drawn to misleading information circulating in the media regarding payment of N70,000 minimum wage to corps members and the directive to upgrade their accounts. This is an absolute falsehood which is far from the truth.
“Corps members, parents and members of the public should note that no directive has been received from the relevant sector of government responsible for wages matters.
“It is, therefore, impossible for the NYSC to issue any information on such. Corps members already know the approved channel and mode of communication in the scheme and should therefore ignore the directive accordingly.
“The NYSC, by this release therefore admonishes corps members to desist from allowing mischief makers who are set to mislead Nigerians from continuing to play on their intelligence.
“Bloggers and social media influencers are warned to stop issuing statements that concern the management of National Youth Service Corps without authorisation.”
The Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) has confirmed the arrest of some top officials of the National Hajj Commission of Nigeria (NAHCON) over alleged mismanagement of the N90 billion intervention for the 2024 hajj.
The ICPC spokesperson, Demola Bakare revealed this to News360 Nigeria gathered during a telephone conversation on Friday morning, saying the arrest was necessitated because the suspects failed to honour the agency’s earlier invitation.
He said ICPC operatives visited the commission’s office in Abuja on Wednesday and arrested all the officials who refused to honour the previous invitation to answer questions regarding the N90 billion hajj subsidy scam, News360 Nigeria gathered
He said, “It is true we arrested the Director of Finance. Initially, we invited them, but they refused to come, that was why we went there to make the arrest. We did not shut down the office as speculated. We arrested the people who did not turn up.
“I would not be able to mention their names, that would amount to a media trial. One of the people that we arrested is the Director of Finance.”
Bakare revealed further that the anti-graft agency had released on bail the suspects arrested in connection with the corruption allegations against the Hajj Commission. However, they are required to regularly report to the agency as the investigation into the corruption allegations continues.
He added, “No, they are not with the ICPC, they have been admitted on bail. But the investigation continues. If they refuse to come (honour subsequent invitation), we will arrest people that stood as their sureties.”
In July, the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission also interrogated the Chairman of the National Hajj Commission of Nigeria, Jalal Arabi, over alleged misappropriation of funds.
More than 20 people have lost their lives following an explosion in the engine of a wooden boat, commonly known as ‘Denghe,’ which sank in the Ezetu I community river in Southern Ijaw Local Government Area of Bayelsa State.
The tragic incident occurred on Wednesday evening.
The sole survivor, who is in critical condition, is receiving treatment at the Niger Delta University Teaching Hospital (NDUTH) in Okolobiri, Yenagoa Local Government Area. The ill-fated boat was traveling from Ekene, on the Atlantic fringe of the council area, to Yenagoa when the explosion happened.
Governor Douye Diri expressed deep sadness over the accident and extended his condolences to the affected families. The state police command spokesperson, Musa Muhammed, confirmed the incident and stated that rescue operations are ongoing to recover the bodies of the drowned passengers.
He said: “The local boat travelling from Ekeni community in Southern Ijaw to Yenagoa had a mishap and sank, 20 persons were reported to have lost their lives. Efforts are ongoing to recover their corpses.”
Multiple sources told News360 Nigeria that the unfortunate incident occurred about 4:30p.m., Wednesday.
Occupants of the local boat were mainly market women when the vessel went up in flames after the engine allegedly exploded. It was learned that the market boat usually goes from community to community along the coastal areas to do makeshift market before returning to Yenagoa on a weekly basis.
Chairman of Maritime Workers Union, Bayelsa State chapter, Ipgansi Ogoniba, while confirming the accident, said the local boat went up in flame in the middle of the river while the boat was sailing to Ukubie community and burnt some of the passengers onboard.
He said the number of casualties could not be immediately ascertained as search and rescue operation was ongoing late Wednesday.
Chairperson of Association of Coastal and Waterways Communities of Nigeria in the state, Odede Tina, blamed the large number of casualty on the inability of the boat operators in the state to stick to safety protocols, especially wearing life jacket while onboard and pleaded with the state government to intensity effort in linking more coastal communities by road in order to curb incessant loss of lives in the river.
Reacting to the tragic incident, the chairman of Southern Ijaw Local Government Area of the state, Target Segibo, described the mishap as most unfortunate and a great loss to the family members of the victims and the council area.
Diri expresses sadness
Diri, in a statement by his Chief Press Secretary, Daniel Alabrah, expressed the condolences of the state government to families of victims of the mishap.
The governor said: “The news of another tragic boat accident in our state was shocking and sad. On behalf of the state government, I extend my deepest condolences to families of victims.
“Upon hearing the news of the tragedy, I immediately directed the Ministry of Transport, Ministry of Marine and Blue Economy and other relevant government organs to dispatch their teams to the river point to join the rescue efforts.
“This is yet one boat accident too many and the state government will take measures to avert such avoidable tragedy going forward. We will investigate the cause(s) of this mishap.
“I again implore boat operators in the state to ensure they observe proper safety procedures at all times in order to make our waterways safer.”
The Ibadan Zonal office of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has invited several officials from the Ogun State government for questioning related to an ongoing investigation.
Dele Oyewale, Head of Media and Publicity at the EFCC, confirmed the development in a phone interview with newsmen on Wednesday.
Oyewale said, ”I just called our Ibadan Zonal office, and it was confirmed that some officials of the state government were invited for a chat in respect of an ongoing investigation, and they have since gone back to their state. Nobody was detained”.
Asked to confirm the status of those that were invited by the anti-graft agency, Oyewale said, “I can only tell you that they were officials of Ogun State government, and it was in connection of an ongoing investigation, it’s not more than that”.
Meanwhile, it was reliably gathered from a reliable source that those invited were the State Accountant General, Mr Tunde Aregbesola, and four other officials of the government.
The invitation was said to be in connection with a petition written by the former Chairman of Ijebu East Local Government, Wale Adedayo, last August alleging Governor Dapo Abiodun of diverting about N10.8 billion meant for the 20 local governments in the state.
The top government official said, “It is true that the Accountant General and some officials of the state government were invited by the EFCC on Tuesday. I learnt it was about the finances of the state government, but I don’t know which of them”.
Recall that Adedayo had written what was supposed to be a private letter to a former governor of the state, Chief Olusegun Osoba, last August, accusing Governor Abiodun of diverting about N10.8bn meant for the development of the council areas.
Adedayo had also forwarded a petition to the EFCC calling for investigation of the state government for this financial infraction.
The letter, however, found its way into the media, becoming a matter of public discourse.
The state government, however, denied the accusation, explaining that it rather augment the monthly federal government allocations sent to the local governments, or else many of them would have found it impossible to fulfil their financial obligations, like payment of salaries, among others.
Adedayo, after his reported allegations against the state government, was later impeached, and he is currently standing trial before an Abeokuta Magistrate Court for raising false allegations and character defamation against Governor Abiodun.
Speaking with our correspondent on Wednesday, Adedayo said, “Yes, I heard about it on Tuesday. I am sure it is about the petition I sent to the EFCC. Lie can travel a thousand miles, but truth will catch up with it within a few seconds.
“A friend told me that the Accountant General was granted administrative bail so he could return with some documents, which he claimed would exonerate him. But others are still there. That’s all I know”.

In his announcement, President Tinubu expressed his expectation that the newly appointed members will approach their roles with integrity and dedication, working to enhance the quality and standards of their respective institutions.
The National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) has announced that its Akwa-Ibom State Coordinator, Mr. Okun Christopher, and his driver, Mr. Daniel Effiong Asibong, have been abducted on transit to Uyo, the State capital.
The Scheme, in a press statement on Wednesday, signed by Eddy Megwa, the Director, Information and Public Relations, said all efforts to locate their whereabout has yielded no result till date.
It called for public assistance in locating Christopher and Asibong, who have been missing since July 29, 2024.
The statement also urged anyone with useful information regarding their whereabout to contact any of the 37 NYSC State Secretariats nationwide, Area Offices and the National Directorate Headquarters in Abuja or the nearest police station or other security agency.
“The that two officers of National Youth Service Corps got missing between Delta and Akwa-Ibom State on Monday, July 29, 2024 while on official duties.
“The NYSC Akwa-Ibom State Coordinator, Mr. Okun Christopher and his driver, Mr. Daniel Effiong Asibong were on transit to Uyo in a white official Hilux vehicle with registration number 27D31FG when the unfortunate incident happened,” NYSC stated.

The #EndBadGovernanceinNigeria protesters have reportedly stormed the residence of the FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike, in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, to demonstrate against the hike in the cost of living in the country.
The protesters, seen in large numbers in a viral video on Tuesday, were chanting and carrying placards with various inscriptions.
The house was guarded by heavy security personnel wielding rifles.
While the protesters were reciting the old national anthem, one of the demonstrators said, “That’s Wike’s house.”
General Christopher Mustapha, Chief of Defence Staff, says those flying Russian flag in Nigeria have committed a treasonable offence.
Speaking after an emergency security session with President Bola Tinubu at Aso Rock, the General vowed that the law would catch up with such people.
Warning those calling for coup, Musa said the military had accepted democracy and regime change would never be allowed.
“We wanted to brief Mr President on the situation on ground and we know that since the riot has started all the security agencies you can see all of us together. Initially, when the riot started they said it was a peaceful one but we have realised that there are individuals that are willing to take advantage of it to cause mayhem. And we can see clearly what has happened since it has commenced. Criminals have taken over, a lot of looting taking place, stealing and all sorts happening.

That is treasonable offence, and it will be viewed and treated as such. So nobody shall allow himself to be used by any individual.
“For those of them flying flags and if you’ll see a lot of them are kids being pushed to do that. We’re following up with those ones are sponsoring them. Those are pushing them because you know, the flies were also made. We have identified those areas and we are going to take serious action against that.
“”The President is clear on his instructions for us not to accept anyone that wants to disrupt the peace and tranquility of Nigeria. And we are all standing here together to show Nigerians that we’re working closely, we are working together with synergy to ensure that there’s still peace and tranquility in Nigeria that we have assured Mr. President.
“We’ve said that clearly that the military is going to step in when it is out of hand and you can see that for people supervising elements to push individuals to carry Russian flags in Nigeria, Nigeria sovereignty, that is crossing the red line and we will not accept that. And those ones who have done that will go in for the books and they want to be prosecuted.”
On Saturday evening, gunmen attacked the Umucheke Okwe Autonomous Community in Onuimo Local Government Area of Imo State, killing Chief Hyginus Ohazurike, the President General of the community, and six other community leaders.
According to a source in the community who wished to remain anonymous, the attack occurred while the leaders were holding a meeting at the President General’s shop.
The motive behind the attack and the identities of the assailants remain unknown as investigations continue.

Witnesses report that the clash began when a group of youths defied the state's curfew and took to the streets to continue a nationwide protest, which has recently seen increased violence in the region.
Abdulkadir Musa, a local resident, revealed that at least eight individuals, including women and children, were shot in Rijiyar Lemo. An elderly woman and three others have been confirmed dead, with many more injured.
The unrest intensified when protesters, allegedly using the hunger protests as a cover, attempted to loot various businesses, including a yogurt shop. Security forces intervened, leading to further violence.
Reports indicate that a Divisional Police Officer was injured during the clash, though this has not been independently verified.
Victims of the shooting are currently being treated at Salamatu Hospital.

Aiha K Nass shared a post about the death of her brother, while Omar Khalid Saleh criticized the police's handling of the protests, accusing them of exacerbating the situation.
Security forces have set up checkpoints and deployed mobile police units to manage the situation, especially around Kurna Asabe near Bukavu Army Barracks.
Attempts to contact police spokesperson Abudullahi Haruna Kiyawa for comment have been unsuccessful.

Zacchaeus Michael, the caretaker chairman of the Kabba-Bunu Local Government Area in Kogi State, has been kidnapped by gunmen.
The state Police Public Relations Officer, William Aya, confirmed the incident on Saturday.
According to Aya, the kidnapping occurred on Friday night along the Kabba-Okene Road in the Kabba area of the state.
“Yes, I got the information. The state Commissioner of Police, Bethrand Onuoha, has already deployed officers for a search-and-rescue mission. We are on top of the situation,” he said.
Sources who spoke on condition of anonymity due to the sensitivity of the matter said that Michael was abducted alongside some of his aides.
One of the sources said, “Reports indicate that CTC Kabba/Bunu Chairman, Zacchaeus Dare Michael, and some of his aides have been kidnapped by gunmen on the Kabba-Okene Expressway in Kabba.
“Authorities are seeking any credible information that may aid their safe rescue.
“I urge everyone to pray for their immediate and safe release, asking for divine intervention and protection during this critical time.”
Vice President Kashim Shettima has spoken out about the ongoing #EndBadGovernanceInNigeria protests sweeping across the nation.
In his remarks, Shettima acknowledged the frustrations and grievances expressed by the protesters, emphasizing the government's commitment to addressing the root causes of the demonstrations.
He urged for calm and constructive dialogue, assuring citizens that the administration is dedicated to implementing policies aimed at improving governance and alleviating economic hardships. Shettima called on protesters to remain peaceful and engage in discussions that would contribute to positive change.
Amid the nationwide #EndBadGovernance protest which began in selected cities nationwide, President Bola Tinubu on Thursday met with the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike.
Wike, decked in a white suit, drove into the State House, Abuja, in a Prado SUV for the meeting with President Tinubu in his office at about 4pm.
While the exact purpose of Wike’s visit was not made public, it came in the wake of ongoing protests in the nation’s capital.
The FCT witnessed protests in some parts including around the Central Area, particularly the vicinities of the Eagle Square where protesters defied warnings from security agencies to vacate the area.
A court order had restricted protests in the FCT to the Moshood Abiola Stadium in Abuja.
The Legal Practitioners’ Privileges Committee, under the leadership of the Chief Justice of Nigeria, Olukayode Ariwoola, has elevated 87 legal practitioners to the prestigious rank of Senior Advocate of Nigeria.
The announcement was made during the LPPC’s 164th plenary session, held on Thursday.
This elevation is a significant honour in the Nigerian legal profession, awarded to distinguished lawyers who have shown exceptional skill and dedication, both as advocates and academics.
The Chief Registrar of the Supreme Court of Nigeria and Secretary of the LPPC, Hajo Sarki Bello, made the announcement, emphasising the high standards met by the new appointees.
“The rank of SAN is not just a title; it is a mark of excellence, a recognition of outstanding contributions to the legal field,” said Bello.
“These 87 individuals have demonstrated remarkable expertise and dedication, making them worthy of this prestigious honour.”
He added that the LPPC reviewed five petitions against some of the applicants, but found them lacking in merit and subsequently dismissed them.
“The Committee thoroughly investigated these petitions and determined that they did not substantiate any claims that would disqualify the applicants,” Bello explained.
The swearing-in ceremony for the new SANs is scheduled for Monday, 30 September 2024.
