Kenyan tycoon to build Sh40bn Mozambique gas power plant

Tycoon Humphrey Kariuki’s Great Lakes Africa Energy (GLAE) has entered an agreement with the Mozambique government to generate electricity using natural gas for domestic use at a cost of Sh40 billion ($400 million).

The UK-based pan-African energy solution firm develops and operates power projects in southern Africa.

The agreement signed last Friday in Maputo will see the construction of a 250 megawatt (MW) gas-fired electricity generating power plant.

The agreement follows Rovuma Basin domestic gas tender whose results were announced in January 2017 with the firm clinching a Sh37.5 billion contract.

The gas concession was the second venture into the southern Africa energy sector for GLAE, established in 2013.
Offshore gas

“As part of the Mozambique government’s intended use of natural gas for the development of domestic power projects, GLAE will develop, finance, build, own and operate a 250 MW gas-fired electric generating power plant, planned in northern Mozambique,” said director Michael Kearns.

Mozambique, which has vast offshore gas resources, has decided to use some for domestic power projects to achieve sustainable economic growth.

The businessman has interests in a large number of Kenyan enterprises, which include The Hub Mall in Karen, Africa Spirits Ltd, Dalbit Petroleum, five-star Fairmont Mt Kenya Safari Club and Mt Kenya Wildlife Conservancy and Animal Orphanage.

At 250 MW, GLAE Mozambican gas-fired power plant will be one of the largest conventional sources of electricity in the country.

Zambia copper belt

GLAE also owns and operates a 105 MW power plant in the Zambia’s copper belt town of Ndola, through Ndola Energy Company Ltd (NECL) under a power purchase agreement with the Zambia Electricity Supply Corporation (ZESCO).

Phase one of the project producing 50 MW of power was completed in 2013.

In February 2017, NECL commissioned phase two adding 55 megawatt of power to the national grid.

The firm is in the process of securing additional power purchase agreements in Africa and beyond and is currently examining opportunities in Kenya, Uganda, Malawi, Zimbabwe and Democratic Republic of Congo.

Your ignorance and lack of comprehension is your problem.

The cheapest 3 bedroom flat I could find in Madaraka estate was worth 480,000 shillings (approx 1.7 million naira) per annum,
While the cheapest 3 bedroom flats in Surulere were half and less than 1/3 the price of Madaraka.

Who is the fool here now? And like I told you, only mostly the newer modern houses in Surulere are available for rent online. There are many more cheaper ones as you can see in the lower income areas which dominate Surulere.

So, can you pls show me cheaper 3 bedroom flats in Madaraka to prove yourself? or forever shut your buccal shithole!
If you notice those kibera clowns even need jumia(a Nigerian company) which is the best thing to happen to Kenya to help market their real estate

Ghana Is Not Like Nigeria Where Cattle Roam The Streets – Ghanaian President Mocks Nigerians
9 hours ago Admin 0

The Ghanian President, Nana Akufo-Addo has mocked Nigerians the ways Cattle roaming the street of Abuja, the country capital, the poor state of security in Nigeria and the naira’s weakening status, said he felt ashamed that Nigeria had lost its respect in Africa.

Meanwhile, the former President Goodluck Jonathan has expressed disappointment on how Nigeria is currently being used as a negative example in the international community.

Jonathan citing recent instances when the Ghanaian President, Nana Akufo-Addo, mocked the poor state of security in Nigeria and the naira’s weakening status, said he felt ashamed that Nigeria had lost its respect in Africa.

Jonathan stated this at the inauguration of the first bridge built by Governor Ayodele Fayose of Ekiti State in Ado Ekiti, the state capital, on Friday.

He said, “He (Ghanaian President) said Ghana is not like Nigeria where cattle roam the streets. At another occasion in the United Kingdom, he made scathing remarks about Nigeria’s currency.

“I feel ashamed as a former President that the president of a neighbouring country used Nigeria as negative examples.

“If a neighbouring African president will use Nigeria to make negative examples, then we as leaders must know certain things are wrong in the country. That means we as leaders must change the way we do things.”

The former President further advised President Muhammadu Buhari to resist pressure to rig the July 14 governorship election in Ekiti State and subsequent elections in the country.

“I don’t believe anybody can defeat the PDP in Ekiti if the election is going to be held.

“I use this opportunity to call on Mr. President because I was there before. When you are there, there is so much pressure on you to use your power to subjugate democracy.

“Don’t do that because when you are going; the only thing you leave behind is your good name. If you use it wrongly, posterity will haunt you. I call on Mr. President to use his power to strengthen democracy,” Jonathan added.

Fellow Nairalanders,

Nairaland loves Igbos and Niger Deltans very much. The thought of being separated from them for any reason is unbearable to us, so we have decided that we will reject any attempt by anyone to use Nairaland to promote the idea of removing Igbos and Niger Deltans from Nigeria.

We have updated rule 9 of Nairaland to reflect this decision. It now says:

I'd like to urge all Nairaland members to respect and obey rule 9. Mynd44 is in charge of enforcing it. If you break this rule, you'll be banned.

Thanks,
Seun (Founder Of Nairaland).

It would have been alot better if the govt can list out the name(s) of major contracts payed for and/executed within this period, where and when..I think this would increase transparency..

You're too blame because you cannot accept the truth and start the tough journery of crawling out of the rat hole.
Kenya has no oil - but in my lifetime - I don't remember one single day we had to queue to buy fuel due to shortage.
Kenya has never ran out of fuel - we have had an oil refinery for a long time that functioned - until recently - but still there is and will never be shortage of refined oil.

We have extensive oil pipeline for downstream (refined) products that ensure oil is transported cheaply and never ran out.

Oil arrives mostly from Dubai & Saudi Arabia - with supply contract awarded to one oil company for 3 months - it get piped from Mombasa to all over - and never never never ran short!!

And add to fact that we export a lot of petroleum products to rest of Africa - yeah we produce no oil - but we sell oil products - refined of course. Kenol-kobil are the biggest players in East and South Africa -- selling refined oil all the way to congo and down to I think Zimbwabwe!! Some of Africa biggest downstream oil companies including Kenya's indegenous ones - that dominate east and part of south africa - all the way to Zimbwabwe.

Nigeria you're the curse of the world my friend.

No city is built in a day. The eko Atlantic City (EAC) has over 40% of its land brought up.
There are currently three completed building with the city and the shortest being 15 stories!!
It only the only city in Africa and one of few in the world to have a complex and
yet modern intra-city maritime transport
It has over a 100,000 trees planted in the city
One of Africa's longest promenade under construction
When completed probably a decade or two would have more high rise than any country in Africa

99% of Nigerian Universities have trashy websites.
UI, UNN, Unilorin, ABU, Uniport alongside all Federal universities have trashy websites. UNN tried though, with a quite informative website but awful graphics still.

Babcock, Bells, Crawford, ABUAD have super awful websites and zero 'official' presence on social media-too poor for private universities!

AUN, Elizade, Landmark, Covenant are the only four universities with well updated websites, no broken links and heavy 'official' presence on SM.
You must be sick in the head just checked covenant uni website and it looks like a child's play compared unilag's website
